Well, like Jon Snow said it was really just a probe or test of their defenses and not a full attack. Now the wildlings probably know that the Night's Watch has basically used up their defensive supplies and lost a lot of men.

Fair enough...but with a 1000 to 1 odds and the ability to overwhelm, just thinking they could have skipped the probe and smash the night watch:)

Yep. The Night's Watch is still up against it. No wonder Jon Snow came up with his idea on how to deal with it.

One more episode to go. Season four passed by so quickly.

Is it just me or does the wildling army have worst leadership ever in coming up with battle plans.  They have over 100,000 people which I believe is an advantage of 1000 to 1 compared to the night watch.  But their attack plans consist of sending a handful of wildlings on a covert mission to attack from one side (this not a horrible plan since can loosen up defenses) and then have 2 giants and one mammoth attack the tunnel gate and roughly have five people try to climb the wall?  Seems like a recipe for disaster from the start.

Why not send a ton more to the gate...you have huge numbers so you can withstand big loses?   The night watch on the wall would have limited supplies to throw things down on them for long.  Why didn't they setup some kind of field artillery to suppress the people on the wall?  The one giant shot a single arrow which it did do some big damage.  Maybe they should have shot a few more?

Another thing I always wondered is why not focus on building ships and go around the wall?  Seems like a better plan then trying to go over a huge fortified mountain.  Better yet, why not divide the army and attack from the sea and multiple points across the wall, where defense castles don't exist?

I know I am over thinking it but after the last episode I couldn't help wondering if the wildlings had competent leadership ( wasn't mance supposed to be good) they might have done better:)

Haven't watched the show, but have read the books. It makes a lot more sense in the books. The wildlings aren't an army, more a collection of nomads under the loose leadership of Mance with a vague common goal of trying to get south of the wall to escape the white walkers.

Finally caught up in time for the finale. I'm with JH, the last episode with the Night's Watch battle was a bit underwhelming, but we can't compare GoT with something like LoTR even if we come to expect those kind of cinematic battles.

Definitely it's the smaller TV budget which prevents huge battles like LoTR had. Same thing happens with Vikings and the Spartacus series. Vikings has a budget of $40 million for ten episodes as compared to over $100 million for a LoTR movie. Still I really liked the battle at The Wall even though it wasn't at LoTR's huge budget level.

Tonight's finale was once again terrific. As someone who hasn't read the books, the characters goings had me glued to the end.

As a reader of the books, most of what happened tonight was 'meh.'  The best bit was Arya and the Hound.  The worst was Daenerys.  I don't rant against the showrunners going off script to come up with their own situations and storylines, but, it gets a tad annoying when you can see that things are done for expediency or to make something fit that shouldn't have happened anyways.

Although a decent episode, nothing really stood out as that great or too unexpected.  Might be just me, but every scene that deals with Bran's storyline I think is a waste of time.  I am sure something important comes out of it at some point, but would prefer watching all the other plots.  I also wish they could consider a 2 hour finale where it gives them more time to tidy things up.

Still my favorite show and can't wait to next year....

I agree the best scenes in last night's finale were with The Hound. The rest was ok and I couldn't help but enjoy the insanity of the last scene with Bran's party...that was uber cool :)

Yeah, kind of underwhelming.  I was looking forward to the scene with Tyrion and dad all season but it was all so subdued.

Okay, that's a little freaky.  Why?  Because just earlier this morning when I first got out of bed, I was randomly wondering to myself exactly who Jon Snow's mother is. 

While I don't care for the series, I'm still a sucker for a good mystery, and the identity of his mother is a puzzle that has long percolated in the back of my mind.

Now take it to its logical conclusion.  Targaryen's marry brother to sister.  Jon (who represents ice) and Dany (who represents fire) will unite to save the world and then marry and rule together.  Thus, A Song of Ice and Fire.
