Alright so I just lost my first game of AoWIII...all of my cities started to rebel and as they did other factions came along and snatched them up. My city unhappiness seemed to come from nowhere. Anyone got any tips on how to keep your cities and thus your empire happy? I thought I was doing alright...I had 7 cities IIRC. But then the sudden collapse. What's the best way to keep AoW III cities happy?

Did someone hit you with a spell that caused the unhappiness? I think there are a few like that

That's what I thought too but I didn't get any notification...can that happen without some kind of notice?

If you click on the city a second time, so that you're looking at production,  you'll also see any spells onthe city. Dissolution is one that will make troops revolt.

Thanks Tuna...it must have been a spell because formerly happy cities all dropped to near -500 in happiness in only one turn.

I had almost won the scenario too! Was producing a good amount of gold, had multiple armies with respectable units and then suddenly WHAM - everyone revolts. While I think it had to be some kind of spell I am hoping it wasn't something I did.

-500 is a pretty big hit. 

I'm not sure if there's any one thing you could do for such a large penalty in one go.  It would have to be something like losing a few cities at once, I'd imagine.

In my Dorf game, I have approximately eight or nine cities, have steamrolled one opponent into oblivion, and only lost a couple battles out of very very many.  Yet most of my cities' happiness is still at or a bit below 500 Happiness (my capital may be around 799 IIRC).  A -500 hit would be a big deal even when steamrolling.   :o  Must've been a spell (temporary one?).

I had 7 cities total and then 4 plummeted in happiness simultaneously. There was very little I could do. I even tried to raze cities and then rebuild but hat just led to empire wide chaos and more unhappiness. Within 10 turns I was dead. Another oddity is that I was not at war with anyone. I had made peace with my one enemy several turns before. So...can spells like that be set without a declaration of war?

I want to say they can, since it's not technically considered a "destructive" spell  ::)  Unfortunately, I don't remember offhand how to counter it (although I know there has to be one).
