A sad state of affairs that muslims turn a blind eye to this (and a host of other dubious issues) for a "Holy man". The problem in large part is "submission" rather than thought and rationality, which only flourishes where there is criticism. By silencing criticism, and indoctrinating young people (a Libyan acquaintance of mine used to play religious tapes to her son when he went to bed.... :-\) you create a very one dimensional, and shallow understanding of the religion. Of course that makes people very easy to manipulate...

It's not wholly a muslim thing either - the Catholic Church, and some of the Protestant ones too used their influence to kill "heretics" back in the day. It begs the question of what it is all about - if you have an Almighty God, I can't see how He needs man to intercede on His behalf - the very act of man acting as God's agent endorses the view that God is powerless without man to do His dirty work, so undermining the view of an omnipotent God. For many religions the suggestion that God is not all powerful is blasphemy in itself, yet we see fanatics act "in the name of God", which in turn is a blasphemous act! Of course, if you are agnostic/atheist that argument is academic, but it does raise the issue of religious terrorism to cow independent thought against the Orthodoxy. Either way it amounts to oppression. :(

The authorities should check out who is bankrolling/organising these guys, and go after them. BTW, this is just the tip of the iceberg - Sauron who lives in France has told me about many rapes and murders of French nationals by "Maghrebians", and other Islamic immigrants. Apparently the same state of affairs is common to Sweden, which has around 10% of its population as Middle Eastern immigrants. Sweden apparently is now the rape capital of Europe, with France not far behind. Where these countries have gone wrong is in adopting a multi-cultural society rather than integrating immigrants into the community, which is a less divisive way to go.

Gus made a good point about the necessity of doing something, but with the caveat that in doing so we may become animals ourselves. Clearly he is a student of Nietzsche ;) ...

^That said it does warm my heart that France has deployed ~80,000 police and gendarmes to find these animals and do what they must. I've noticed too that the French Army is not involved...or at least it appears like they are not involved. Only civil forces. If that's correct is that because the French Army cannot deploy within France? Or did I just miss it and they are involved in the search too?

Boggit, for what it's worth, the cop who got shot in the head was a frenchman of north african descent.  you have good ones, you have bad ones, the bad ones always make the media.    He took a bullet to the head doing his duty.  The scum who perpetrated all this will be caught dead or alive, hopefully very soon.
