Thanks, Jarhead.  I was about to buy my way in until I get to the menu of "games packages" you can buy, with prices of hundreds of dollars for a single ship.  And I looked at the $30 ship and it says that this doesn't get you in to the actual alpha and beta. . . .

But so long as I have the option to grind my way on up to the things that all y'all rich people just pay thousands of dollars for - and so long as I can get there in either a singleplayer environment or a gankless multiplayer environment - I'm good to go.
Things are more like they are now than they have ever been before.

I bought a $30 ship and have access to what I believe is the alpha and beta program...hmmm...I wonder if they changed the plan, or if what I have is something other than the current game build?

Either way, I'm certain thedeveloper has confirmed that you will be able to buy everything with game currency in the retail game.

Neither one of those comes even remotely close to competing with Elite. Yes, they are good games in their own right, but in a totally separate league.

...annnd why?

A comparison would truly be helpful. From what I read of the latest Evochron, it plays very comparably to Elite (or vice versa since the Elite remake came afterward), down to having similar complaints about the content and play styles!

Star Made is admittedly Minecrafty, so some obvious differences there.

Play them, and it will be obvious to you. Graphics, sound, physics, scale of universe, gaming potential, etc. There is just no real comparison. Again, doesn't mean Evochron isn't good. It is, and what it accomplishes at 50mb is quite impressive.

Rogue System is the one I'm looking forward to.  The idea the devs have is to make a space combat simulator with the level of detail and complexity you'd find in a DCS title such as A-10C or Black Shark.  It's pre-alpha right now and I'm not sure how much backing or press it's getting but I hope it all pans out.

Until the "city lights on planets" I thought you were talking about UN proposals for combat ships operating off the coast of Ethiopia, Somali, or the South Arabian coast. ;)

1.1 going out now to all folks

no new client, just upgrade

i didnt beta test, just read on the changes - python is nerfed, pffft ill worry about that in 100 million credits!

smithcorp

I got a message that a new launcher was needed when i tried to update. I installed the new launcher but every attempt to 'upgrade' to 1.1 gets a validation error.

Any tips?

I haven't played in ages...the immersion held my attention much longer than any other game I recall...but as with all "open" gaming...where there's no direction or instruction (X Universe)...I get lost and the game slips into oblivion.

I'm pretty sure this one won't slip into oblivion - but I have to be honest - the longer I leave it, the lower on the "What should I fire up and play" list it will go.

Sad really - and most definitely not the game's fault...I'm just a bit meh with open world gaming. On rails story driven is my preferred modus operandi

Of course it doesn't help that I went through and bound all the controls to keys to try and utilise the Voice Attack software only to find out it doesn't work very well with Jockanese! So I would have to go through the re-map process

I'm sort of in the same boat, JD. I haven't played much over the last month and really don't have a tremendous urge to either. I got a little bored with the sole mission of earning more money just to buy a bigger, better ship. I mean, there is nothing else to spend money on other than goods to earn a profit to buy a better ship. The best ships are just too expensive for my play style and I have no intention of playing until I have 100 million credits.

Maybe I'll try bounty hunting again soon, especially with the new update that permits you to accidentally hit a federal ship without immediately becoming e most wanted criminal in the galaxy.

Me too. All I'm thinking about now is CMBS... Campaign and PBEM. I joined the Blitz ladder so that means I'll play it a lot.

1.1 was pretty borked on release, some bugs were catastrophically game breaking, like a massive error to collision detection that led to some insta deaths in larger ships.

FD was on the ball and patched out the worst of the bugs, and 1.1 is pretty fun right now.  I sold my Lakon Type 6 and kitted Viper for an Asp serving currently as an armed merchantman and things are pretty slick.  Enemy AI is tougher, interdiction are bit more common and the 1000ly Route Planner is AMAZING.

have you armed the Asp with weapons or turrets, i understand the turrets now are pretty hard core and will do as theyre told

I've got four gimbaled pulse lasers and two gimbaled class 2 multicannons.  That setup will shred an NPC Cobra fast enough I don't need to have turrets.

I mostly picked that setup to save money though, I may try a turret system as I level the Asp up.  Right now she's fitted for cargo, running 86 tons with a Class B5 FSD and A class Power supply and distributor.  She's got good range, good capacity and can handle anything in her weight class.

It's really hard to go with an unarmed merchant now, especially along the well traveled spacelanes with rare goods.  Player pirates are stalking those routes like vultures in open play and will jump on Type 6's and below with abandon.
