I was dragged into a game of Castles of Mad King Ludwig at the gaming cafe over the weekend.  It's generally not my kind of game but it ended up being pretty fun.

Thanks. This is a waterline model. After I bought it and had it home I thought about creating a diorama for it showing it angling down with fire billowing out in bubbles. Unfortunately I'd need a full hull ship to show that properly...unless I angle the sail toward the front...hmmm. Hmmm.

I've got my meager collection of blue/white cards out and stacked on my table right now.  I have my blue/white deck sorted by cost and should have sorted it by type of spell, as I'm brewing up a hot mess for this evening.  Nerds beware I'm coming in with a deck meant to lose with glory and honor!

I did dust off my game shelves today.  So I did touch my ASL and Combat Commander collection, if only too briefly.

Very late to party, I am finally playing Paths of Glory.  Here, the Central Powers, start turn 4, already facing solid trenches from Switzerland to the sea. Turn 3 saw massive battles in Sedan...but no movement.

Start pulling some Austrian corps out of reserve and get them on the map or you could get steamrolled by the Russians.  That's what happened to me.

I thought tonight was some standard play, but it was a draft night.  I went all in on black/red (and a couple of nice rare/uncommon I needed :)  )  Unfortunately there were at least 2 other people drafting red, which really spread out that color too thin.  I should have just gone mono black, but live and learn.  Ended up 1-2 and some tough, close games in my loss and a couple of blow losses.  My win was not close.  My opponent had drafted a rainbow deck and was hurting for mana both games.  Next week they will get the wraith of my white/blue deck, plus I picked up a new dragon for it tonight in the draft.  So all in all a good night of gaming.

A rainbow deck in a draft match?  Sounds insane to me.   

The draft rules are quite likely different from the days when I played regularly, long ago in the far away.  Even going dual-color in a draft was risky back then.

There is a small store nearby that hosts some small MTG nights.  I thought about joining in sometime, and even picked up some new cards about three years ago, but I really don't want to get into collecting them again.  Got enough game collecting as it is.  Sold off my collection of 90s MTG cards long ago, which would just make me second guess that too, if I dived back in.  Think I'll just stick with the PC game for an occasional taste and leave it at that.

Yeah rainbow is bad.  Drafting dual-color isn't too much of a risk and in fact it's how the majority of people draft.  There are so many dual color tap lands and spells that cost multi-color mana that it's not too bad.  Some color mixes go together much better than others in standard, but in draft it's a level playing field.  I didn't play when if first came out, so I don't have the 90's cards to regret not having anymore.  However, I will say it's a fun and inexpensive way to spend an evening especially since I accept the fact I will never really be hyper competitive in standard and will never be so in modern or the legacy/vintage formats.  Mostly I'm a kitchen table player and anything goes on that battlefield.  No blocks/bans/restrictions lists.  I did pick up a few of the intro and duals decks and kept them intact to use as decks to help the wife and kids learn the game.  They are pretty balanced if from the same set and are fun to play too.

Yeah, casual playing is the way to go.  Used to have an occasional Beer & MtG night with a few old buddies years ago, which was some nice enjoyable trash-talking fun.  I moved and hadn't played since around 2001.
