They Live was a colossal turd, but its campy awesomeness is inversely proportional to its turd-ness.

Thus the reason for it's greatness. Can you see Arnold trying to deliver that line? Or Stallone? Bruce Willis maybe. Another great line is when the sidekick see the aliens for the first time, "Where did they come from"? "It sure as hell wasn't Cleveland". It was the 80's man.

Three years after that movie came out I went with a friend of mine on a boozy road trip up to Gloucester, MA (co-incidentally right after the infamous 'Perfect Storm' had passed through) for a visit to some of his anarchist-artist-fishermen friends. When we got to their 2nd floor place overlooking part of the harbor i noticed that there were a whole bunch of goofy little white signs with exhortations to 'consume', 'watch', 'obey', 'conform', etc. taped around their apartment.

Only three years in and it was already a cult film.

I saw Roddy Piper on TV one time talking about the movie. He said John Carpenter was a big Hollywood Lib. and the aliens were supposed to represent Reagan Republicans with Rolex watches. He said Carpenter wanted to make the movie more anti-capatilist but he, a Canadian and a little bit crazy, wouldn't go along with the lines Carpenter wanted him to say. And they had a big fight about it. Don't know if it's true but that's his story.

^^One can only hope that the fight would mirror the one he and fellow ' hero' character Keith David had in the movie. So long, so stupid, so damn funny.

Yeah, Piper said Carpenter wanted that fight scene to be the longest one ever filmed. He said he thought it was pretty dumb.

Man, I ended up catching most of Alien Resurrection on TV the other night...what the Hell was that mess supposed to be?! I remembered it being lame, but it's AWFUL. I understood what they were going for with the third movie : a return to the claustrophobic horror vibe of the original Alien, where one monster is savaging a dwindling group of survivors who are wholly unequipped to deal with it. Resurrection, though...YIKES.

I don't know what they were expecting after asking Jeunet to direct, although to give "credit" where it's due, I'm pretty sure we have Weaver to thank for the idiotic sex scene and its result. Like most hardcore Alien fans, I view Resurrection as an...interesting...film in its own right but pretty much ignore it with regard to canon. Most of the scenes involving the crew of the Betty are entertaining enough in my opinion, I thought they had a good camaraderie going.

While we're on the subject, I absolutely loathe Alien 3. It's a spectacularly dull film that gives way too much air time to people spouting nonsense and looking hungrily at the only girl in the complex. Eurgh. Even the final chase/trap sequence is boring as hell. "But that's because the execs ruined Fincher's vision! You need to watch the assembly cut!" Uh yeah, still dull as dishwater. If I were David Fincher I'd have washed my hands of it too.

I like Alien 3 a lot - I don't see it as boring at all but 'minimalistic.' I like the idea of a new confrontation with minimal weapons. It's in no way as good as Alien or Aliens but as a variation on that Alien theme I enjoy it.

I've never seen Resurrection (thankfully).
