Fantastic 4 redux

I'm on board for Doctor Strange as well, and for Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Perhaps also Captain America: Civil War. I'm going to hold at that point and see what the latest crop does to bring up Infinity Wars before I dive into it.

God help me I want to see Ant-Man tomorrow. I started decidedly "MEH" on this one, but then saw who the villain was and thought he was brilliant in House of Cards. I'm admittedly somewhat curious to see how Paul "Role Models" Rudd does as a superhero, too.

40Jr is totally psyched to see it, so I'll have to go.  I'm very 'meh' about it and Jr. is all 'wtf' about my malaise.

Another hot leading lady wasted in this mess. I'd give up ever making a FF movie at this rate.

A truly, unwaveringly abysmal film. 

The worst thing that can be said for a Super Hero film is that it's boring, and this one is oh so boring.  A 90 minute film where the heroes don't get their powers until minute 60 and have one Mcguffin filled fight with their primary villain who has perhaps, generously, 15 minutes of screen time.  That is, honestly, about as full a synopsis as the film needs. 

It's essentially a bad science fiction film about teleporting with some David Cronenberg style body horror overtones and a tacked on vaguely super heroish final act that's very inconsistent with the previous 2/3 of the film.

You're welcome.  It's my public service for the day. 

People got caught up in the casting and the supposed lack of faithfulness pre-release.  I can say that even with a cast people thought was perfect, it's still be horrible.  I can't answer to whether or not making it more faithful would improve it, because making it faithful to Fantastic Four would be a completely different film altogether.

I only saw it because my wife does freelance reviews.  I sort of saw the writing on the wall with all the production issues, and I had very low expectations.  My expectations were not anywhere nearly low enough. 

My wife's not even going to end up reviewing it.  She's got a backlog of books and movies she needs to get to, and right now is getting free ARC's of the Star Wars canon material, so that's her priority.  She just can't come up with anything to say about this.

I told her "Sometimes its fun to write something when you're beating it down.  But this time, you'd pretty much just be kicking a mentally disabled dog that just lost a leg and has cancer.  There comes a time to just put the poor pooch down and forget you ever saw anything."

My 11 year-old gets excited for any super hero movie, and he was not excited for this one.  We saw it Friday night, at the end he asked me what I thought, and all I could say was "well, at least we don't have to worry about there being a sequel."

In RPG lingo, Dr. Doom was stacked.  No way that he should have been defeated with those stats and abilities.

I haven't seen the movie yet but I've been reading a lot of comments. I feel like the tonal choice, though valid enough as an experiment (sci-fi with horror overtones a la Challengers of the Unknown, a real influence on the original FF), was a mistake -- Fox wanted Christopher Nolan's Incredibles Fantastic Four. And I've worried from the earliest leaked info about Doom that they were going to drastically mishandle the character (again), which was my main concern about the attempt (since I was okay in theory with the tonal shift). Doom doesn't fit cleanly into the story, and that janks the story structure particularly hard in the final third.

Arguably they should have kept Doom as a side player (who does not get FF powers, and techs up in the traditional Doom way as basically Iron Man + Doctor Strange), and if they're going to seriously do the science/horror Challengers riff then bring in Annihilus and let him or one of the other alien Negative Zone entities be the threat. With maybe Doom teching up to help defend against an invasion into our world by Annihilus (or whoever) at the end and being facially scarred for his trouble (since the canon origin wouldn't probably work).

Instead they shafted Doom into the Annihilus role: the world-ending threat from the Negative Zone.

If Hollywood read the works they steal from, they'd find excellent plots and fan bases ready made to see their favorite stories on the big screen.  Instead, as every good liberal must, they think they know better than you what you want and then set out to give you the lowest common denominator trash and call it by a name you know.  Until they take the source material verbatim and make it into a movie, there are just varying levels of suck they can achieve.  And if you need an example of how it's done properly, 'The Godfather,' is almost THE EXACT SAME AS THE BOOK!  Scenes, dialog, characters, etc.  [/rantoff]

An even better example than The Godfather is The Maltese Falcon.  You can actually read along with the movie.  The original Day of the Jackal (w/ Edward Fox) is the same way.
