Three portraits of former Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin are on display in the centre of Donetsk, the rebel capital of eastern Ukraine, as the separatist authorities fuel a mood of Soviet nostalgia.

The portraits, adorning a main square, seem to go down well with one young woman walking past.

"I think the portraits of Stalin are a good thing. It's our history and a lot of people have forgotten he even existed," said Yekaterina, a 22-year-old student.

We are living in interesting times.  I can kind of understand this yearning for the past no matter who the character is.  Back then at least there were real men who would not take feldercarb from anyone and there was no such thing as PC sensitivities. 

Today I see nothing but Quislings and Nevilles at a moment in human history where someone with a backbone is sorely needed to preserve our freedoms.

I don't see that happening anytime soon since recent generations have generally been increasingly taught all the PC and Neville-like trappings throughout their childhood.  The social engineering proceeds.

Well history has shown time and again that empires in generel gets to a point where the inhabitants forget how and why they where once a great nation, and soon after you see others take over. My guess is that its Europes turn, followed by the US later, since we now see people that actually believe human rights and democracy are universal human rights shared by everyone, rather then something you need to fight hard to keep.

As to how immediately destructive the war would really be or as to how easily the veneer of civilization among friends and neighbors, municipalities, and countries will later shatter after the infrastructures of rule-of-law, power sources, food production/distribution, and medical care have broken down?

To be fair, they didn't have a good choice either way (and quickly realized the misconception).
