That makes sense. The world is clearly huge and there's a lot to do. There seems to be about 10 different types of crafting stations for various items -- I have no idea what does what. And the world is strewn with all sorts of junk -- presumably most things are useful for crafting but I don't even know where to begin.

Hold down 'V' key for the base construction menus.  Then you can target & highlight stuff to salvage for parts.  Even cars, lamp posts, etc.

That may only be usable in certain areas.  I salvaged most of the junk around the old gas station that way, then built a shack on top of the station using floor, walls, ceiling, doors, and stairs leading up to it.  And an automated gun turret.  There was a wide green-circled area in which I was restricted to salvaging there, though.  I'm guessing there are only certain areas you can do that, plus salvaging stuff you put in your inventory.

I don't really enjoy the hordes of survival-construction games which mostly consist of you stacking crap up and doing such stuff.  I much prefer exploring and finding things.  But the storms & rain in Fallout 4 have are very Stalker-like in that they give you radiation poisoning if you're caught out in them.  So building a shelter where I can dump heavier inventory items, and sleep off damage in safety, is needed.

This is the kind of single-player wanderlust RPG I'd prefer to play on my laptop whilst casually lazing about, but it's wimpy 1GB GT640M video card would probably run about the temperature of the sun's surface if I tried that.

So far I have been just messing around by running and gunning all over the place....I'll take my time later when I have more time.  One thing I have noticed is that using a controller is one of the best experiences I have had so far in a PC game where many prefer keyboard/mouse....just feels right and find myself regularly hitting targets.  Usually in shooters with a controller, I struggle to aim and kill the target, not in this game so far.  Other thing I have noticed....pretty wicked dismemberment options exist if you shoot people in the right places, of course if you like things like that:)  Lastly, I tend to get motion sickness in a lot of shooter games, not in this game so far....has been very smooth and that is even with me constantly running around causing mayhem.

All positive signs for me so far.....

Played for about 2 hours on my console version of the game and loving it so far.  All of that goodness with the previous titles are here and then some!   O0

Probably because F4's controls haven't been optimized for PC users, nor mouse & keyboard.

The usual console-to-pc ignored bullshit is present.  Mouse Y-axis moves much slower than X-axis.  Framerate capped to 30fps.  The FOV problem.  No keybinding.

I could probably go on awhile longer, but you get the picture.  Years of complaints about these things not being adjusted or options added, specifically for the PC releases they do, haven't been paid any attention.  You still have to spend extra time looking up & entering numerous INI file tweaks and workarounds, which don't always work or may cause other issues.  It actually requires more editing than in the previous game using this engine, Skyrim.

I had hoped that this would be improved to some extent in this new one, but feel like the developer is just expecting every PC user to manually implement modifications themselves.  With a big "fuck your shit" implied as an afterthought.

I would just trash this thing for such laziness and be done with it, but I can see that it can be as enjoyable as the previous Fallouts or Skyrim, after you deal with that half-assed port BS that they should've dealt with years ago in previous versions.  And hope that they work & don't cause extra issues.

^If you make it too obvious, its not funny.  :uglystupid2:

Pro tip: the best way to make it funny is . . . to actually make it funny!

:coolsmiley:

That's just gratuitously hurtful.  :'(

Well, I LOL'd at least! :)

Well, at least for my style of play with the controller (which certainly may be different than everyone else), so far I really don't have these complaints.  I am probably not looking at this as deep as you are either, I am not a PC hardcore RPG/shooter expert nor do I ever finish many of these games.  I just try and enjoy the amount of time I put into them for what they are versus what they are not.  But I understand others may feel differently.....

I broke down and watched a couple of Let's Play videos by one guy, and got enough of a taste to be intrigued.

By the time I can afford a PC to run this game, it should be on sale for $20 or less. :)

...be carefull what wishes you unintetionally send to  ' 'the universe '    ;)

I saw the systemspecs (of the CPU) and thought:   well, i get that when i have to upgrade my PC
a day later (last Saturday morn) my mainboard had quit. Its to old to find an archaic item replacement, so its a new mainboard, new CPU, new RAM ... It hurts!  ...benefit, now i can reayl  think when to jump on the F4 bandwagon
(Well first comes the system rebuild , and reinstall and patch to actual version  of a ton of already owned ganes   ...and elicense fu...ups)

I still have FOV issues, and there are even more ini edits required to get them fixed in Fallout 4.  Hell.. I can't get the 1st-person FOV changes to work.. only 3rd-person.  Fookeen consolized BS again. :knuppel2:

I was just talking to Judge Dredd about this.......Motion sickness.... :tickedoff:

Played a lil bit on my Son's computer when he was afk, and I definitely sensed the nausea coming on. I don't think I had that problem with Fallout 3.

I had the frustration of my internet going out three times while downloading from Steam.  Aarghhhhhh!

I played the game for maybe an hour and a half last night.  The start of the game is true to the origins of your character.  You think you are going to be underground and safe from a nuclear attack.  You end up being part of another evil Vault-Tech experiment on.  200 years pass and you emerge into a post-apocalypse America.

You are clueless at the start of the game.  This can be frustrating to some.  You have some general goals, some of which may be impossible to achieve.

This is spoiler free if you make it 10 minutes into the game.  I did not find the tutorial parts at the beginning of the game as helpful as those for Fallout 2; Fallout 3 or Fallout New Vegas.  But I read entire manuals before playing games as part of my general OCD nature.

I'm enjoying it so far.  I need to remap some of the controls on my PC.  The visuals are much improved over Fallout New Vegas.  My 4.5 year old Falcon Northwest gaming rig is running the game on "medium quality visuals."

Noticed a little bit of nausea in the first hour of the game. Set the FOV to 90 instead of the default 80 and it seemed to help. You have to actually change/add this in 3 different locations, 2 in your documents folder and 1 in the actual Steam/Fo4 folder.
Here is a nice tutorial copy/pasted from Steam.....

Unlike how you may have changed the fov in Skyrim, Fallout 4 requires a little more work. Note it requies changes to three files, there are two files called Fallout4Prefs.ini in two different locations and one called Fallout4.ini, all three need to be changed as below. Please not whilst the fov changes don't have to be a multiple of 10 if you have issues with the low working try making it a multiple of 10 as some have reported this helping.

Firstly go to your Fallout4.ini (loacted at C:\Users\[name]\Documents\My Games\Fallout4\) and under [Display] put the below:
fDefaultWorldFOV=XX
fDefault1stPersonFOV=YY

* where XX is you desired fov in third person.
* where YY is the desired fov in first person.
I feel 90 is what will probably be best for most, but tweak away. :)

Next go to the Fallout4Prefs.ini and do the same directory as above (C:\Users\[name]\Documents\My Games\Fallout4\), under [Display] put:
fDefaultWorldFOV=XX
fDefault1stPersonFOV=YY

* where XX is you desired fov in third person.
* where YY is the desired fov in first person.
I feel 90 is what will probably be best for most, but tweak away. :)

Next go to where you installed steam then open steamapps\common\Fallout 4\Fallout4 (a folder called Fallout 4 is in another folder called Fallout4, how many levels deep does this go ;) ). Next open the Fallout4Prefs.ini here and once again under [Display] add the below:
fDefaultWorldFOV=XX
fDefault1stPersonFOV=YY

* where XX is you desired fov in third person.
* where YY is the desired fov in first person.
I feel 90 is what will probably be best for most, but tweak away. :)

Note, the fov options under [Interface] in Fallout4.ini do not need to be changed for this to work.

Your FOV should now be changed for both first and third person. :)

Also tried setting the FOV to 100 but noticed I lost about 10FPS in doing so, 90 seems to be a good spot.

Nefaro

Yeah.. you have to make the changes in multiple INI files now.

My first-person one still won't work.  So I end up running around in 3rd-person all the time since that one will actually stay at 90deg FOV.  I'd much rather play in first-person though.  :-\

I saw some recommendations to set those INI files to Read-Only, for those who can't get the FOV changes to stick.  Not tried that yet, but my INI files weren't being changed.  Have doubts that will help. May need to restart with a new character perhaps?   :-[  Frustrating.

Is it possible to skip all the base building stuff or get an NPC to take care of it for you?  I've always found that kind of stuff/crafting to be a chore.

I'd be curious about this too.

Gonna try to just keep it at a shack with a bed, chair, and some defenses.  Maybe a container.

From vids I've seen, it looks like you can start getting followers moving in at some point.  Don't know what benefits that provides.

Grim.Reaper

After playing for awhile today, encountered my first issue.....went to exit the game/save and had a lockup, therefore lost some time that I played.  Not a huge deal for me right now since this is just a "playing" around time before I try and get more serious, but hopefully was just a one time thing or gets fixed in a future patch before I get serious.
