...thats one thing the article didn't really explain.  How did they find out the sub had been there?

Interesting article and a bit disturbing.  Besides the weapons they could fire at the US think of all the damage they could cause to the oil drilling rigs in the Gulf and really put a hurt on the economy.

Interesting, but I'd like to see other confirmation of this. It's quite possible that Akula had a US sub shadowing it the whole time.

Reminds me of a story that I heard from some RCN officers.  They were visiting a Russian naval base around Murmansk, a few years after the collapse of the Soviet Union.  They were in an Officer's Mess about to have lunch, exchanging pleasantries and information about where they were from.  One of the RCN officers stated that he worked at Stadacona.  One of the Russians said "Ah yes, Stadacona!  Wait, you will enjoy this."  He got up, went to a bookshelf and took out a VCR tape, then walked over to a TV, turned it on and fired-up the VCR.  The tape was some video shot out of a periscope, entering Halifax harbour and then zooming-in on buildings inside the Stadacona base, all in broad daylight.  The Russians just looked at them, all smiles, no doubt relishing the expressions on the RCN officers faces.

Yikes! That anti-submarine boom should never have been removed after WW2.

Reminds me a lot of the yarn Wolfowitz and his cronies pulled back in the 1970s when they headed the Committee on the Present Danger B Team and basically lied to the Senate Intelligence guys about a Soviet submarine that was soooo sneaky that the CIA couldn't find it (Clancy based his Red October book off this idea).  They were pretty much just frontmen for the defense industry trying to gin up business.
