And outraged with this game he is! The biggest gripe seems to be that it is not really "open world" and, like me, he absolutely hates how they force you into playing as a character that is just not interesting or cool to play as at all. That alone really turns me off of the game.

I think his outrage is way overblown but on the other hand I won't try to convince you to try the game, it certainly is far from perfect. I just think it is good enough for some Star Wars escapism.

For me, its not so much that I think there is anything wrong with the game, per se. It is just not the Star Wars RPG type game I was hoping for based upon what I know of it. I think this is why a lot of people like it and a lot of people don't. Just different expectations.

Going to assume that it is a very different game from the Knights of the Old Republic series...

Essentially it is an advanced version of the formula used in the open world-ish Assassin Creed games. A step above what Ubisoft normally does for games but definitely not a KOTOR level RPG.

And there I was just about to pull the trigger - thanks for the save

Guys - I have a question for you...

For the guys who don't want to play because you're being forced to play a specific character (so forget the reviews for now)...how many of you played The Last of Us and presented that same argument? I may have missed those arguments - but I think it's worth asking the question.

For me it's a question of theme and setting. Anything remotely Wild West outlaw-ish has me wanting to play a pretty specific Eastwood-esque gunslinger type. Think John and Arthur from RDR.

I enjoyed playing as Joel as TLOU and even Ellie and Abby in TLOU2, since I don't really have similar hang ups about post apocalypse stuff. Although I would have liked if that game was set in Britain with a Clive Owen type protagonist with some classic British wit, like Children of Men.
I was waiting for a mission, and for my sins, they gave me one.

I want choices. Don't give me choices then it's my choice not to buy. Anyways, it's looking like this game is a steaming pile of crap.

I never played the TLOU. The closest thing I can compare it to is the Witcher. I tried and tried and tried...and tried to get into it. Time after time I would go back to it to see what I must be missing based on all the rave reviews, but I just couldn't get into it and after awhile, I began to realize that a large part of my rejection of the game was due to the fact that I couldn't connect with the player character and there was not enough of an ability to customize. In Outlaws, its the same problem, but compounded by the fact that there are so many cool directions they could have gone in with the player character, even if they wanted to limit or restrict customization. In my view, it was a tremendous mistake and a missed opportunity.

JH put it so much more eloquently than I could (I just use poop emojis and call stuff shit)

JudgeDredd

Fair enough.

As a person that doesn't give a poop about something like that, and bearing in mind we've not always had the ability for such a thing, it seemed an odd thing to me for people to use as a reason not to get a game (though it transpires there are now other reasons - though i will be getting it soon).

I would grant you, given its been around for a few years, it is an odd thing to leave out a game.

Having said that, there are plenty of games that do not allow you character creation.

I dunno dude...it's called a role playing game. The whole point is to let players have a say in the "role" that they play. If it is more of a narrowly focused action-adventure game, think something along the lines of Tomb Raider, it shouldn't be marketed as an open world RPG.

I didn't see anything that said it's an RPG

I made a mistake about IGN. I doubled down because I watched it again and still thought I saw a 4. It doesn't change the fact that there are a lot of negative reviews. Try to just come to grips with that and relax.

Still don't know why going on about negative reviews, that was never questioned so nothing to come to grips on. Thanks.
Did you pick it up? I'd be interested in your thoughts.
