Brand new song from my home town band:

I think i'll play some Civilization 5 and Horizon.

Have a nice weekend!

My usual: BoC work, Fight Club work.  Rule the Waves3 AAR (I really am going to post an update on this sometime soon) .  A little Flashpoint Campaign playtesting. And some CMO description file work.

Starting my first Shadow Empire game since April.  There's been a lot of Beta changes since then including the AI using nukes now.  Can't wait for Armageddon!

Why do helos fly so differently in DCS and MSFS? They can't both be right.

I have heard that dcs helicopters are harder to fly than other flight sims. Would you agree with that. My chopper flight time in a simulation game is literally dcs and that's it.

The flight model for rotary aircraft is much more authentic is DCS. Helo flight models have been one of the weakest aspects of MSFS 2020. Some of the newer modules have improved upon this.

Whether a particular airframe is difficult to fly in DCS varies greatly on the aircraft being modeled. Some are more difficult than others and this depends largely on the design and avionics of the aircraft. I think all of the DCS modules have been developed closely with the feedback of SMEs and with the benefit of having near complete real world data. Therefore, I believe there is a high-degree of authenticity there. That being said, I've never flown a helicopter in the real world so I have no frame of reference for comparison.

If you're looking to get into helos in DCS though, I would highly recommend the Kiowa. It has been one of the easiest helos in DCS for me to get comfortable with.

I can barely fly in a straight line in e.g. the Hind in DCS. It is hard to imagine that modern helos lack stability systems that make it easier to just not fall out of the air.

MSFS on the other hand is obviously too stabilized. You can even land directly from a hover without any turbulence or other shakeups near the ground.

What peripherals are you using? Have you tweaked your saturation and curves properly?

I have CH products. The F-16 Fighterstick using thrust for collective and their pedals.

I need to restart messing with the curves, true. When I did it improved but I lost my settings on a Windows reinstall.

CH devices are a big part of your problem. when I went from CH pedals to MFG and Winwing, it was a world of difference. Pedals aren't a big factor when flying fixed wing, especially 4th generation and on, but with helos, high quality pedals become infinitely more important. Additionally, although I don't think a good collective is an absolute necessity, they definitely help a lot. I use the Virpil collective and it has really enhanced control and immersion. At a bare minimum though, that CH F-16 Fighter stick is not doing you any favors. Precise control is critical to flying helicopters across all axis and not having precision controllers makes this infinitely more difficult than it should be.

While I always try to avoid saying spending money is the first solution to a problem, my DCS helicopter flying ability became infinitely better when I invested in a VKB Gunfighter and a Virpil collective. The precision of my ability to command what I wanted went up considerably.

I've got to say, I didn't have a ton of interest in it when it came out but that developer is doing the Lord's work continually expanding and improving this game. I do have it now, I really need to make time to dive in.

Hm. I still have a racing sim setup that is works $2000. Given that I don't play racing games anymore it might make sense to convert that to flightsim gear. On the other hand Assetto Corsa 2 might be released in our lifetime. Decisions, decisions...

Dammit Carl!

Broken record time: WoT/WoWs & 7D2D.  Seem to have hit my current "sweet spot," with these three games as of late.

Saying that means I've just jinxed things (I know), so who knows for later?

Getting cooler around here, which means I'll be huffing my pumpkin spice gas soon with glee.
