QuoteKnown Issues

General
Windows can incorrectly report that the game is not responding during longer loading times – for large scale multiplayer or on machines with relatively low specifications
Windowed mode is larger than the monitor area when resolution is set to the maximum resolution of the monitor
Framerate can drop noticeably in large scale multiplayer battles with machines with relatively low specifications
After using Alt+Tab to minimize the game, attempting to resize the window can distort the image
The game can crash if Automatch fails to find a result after approximately 20 minutes of failed searching
The screen can briefly flicker white when receiving a notification from GOG Galaxy
Using Windows shortcuts to move the game to a secondary monitor can cause it to render across both monitors
Multiplayer lobbies may become frozen when transferring badges.
Multiplayer lobby and In-game chat can appear not to work if you have not opted-in for Multiplayer Chat in the options menu
Using vertically oriented aspect ratios renders the game in interesting ways
The game can run at a lower framerate when left minimized for extended periods of time on Windows 11
The game may occasionally crash on the loading screen when spamming mouse clicks
Quick Automatch may immediately cancel after selecting it. Please try going into the Automatch menu
Ranked Automatch is not yet active – this will be enabled during the post-launch window. Timing is to be determined.
Language selection for Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese do not work when set from the GOG Galaxy launcher
CPUs without AVX support will experience crashes on startup. Until we can issue a fix, please run the game with -nomovies to avoid the issue.
Gameplay
Missions – the Space Marine army is not using Blood Ravens colors in the tutorial
Missions – rarely individual lines of dialogue can fail to play during conversations in missions
Missions – loading a saved game for the Skirmish tutorial can cause the mission tutorial objectives to not be completable
Missions – The Imperial Guard Weapon Specialization upgrade does not apply correctly in Winter Assault Order Mission 2
Controls – when using the Modern Hotkey controls a small number of units use the same hotkey for abilities & reinforce action
Controls – some mission-specific actions & abilities do not have hotkeys
Cover – the tooltip explaining Cover does not clearly explain all units that receive modifiers for being in cover
Combat – visual effects do not clearly trigger and units cannot rotate when a unit's movement is disabled by a melee attack that puts the unit in a rooted state (ex. Canoness)
Combat – The Imperial Guard Psyker ability Curse of the Machine Spirits visuals can be permanently applied to Eldar vehicles – the gameplay effect does not permanently apply
Combat – units in Hold Ground stance use their default range to engage in combat rather than the expanded range granted by friendly abilities
Movement – infantry units can briefly move in a loop when losing line of sight on an enemy in an elevated position
Movement – flying vehicles can animate at extreme angles when flying over steeply sloped terrain (ex. The edge of bridges)
Movement – units disengaging from combat can occasionally animate sliding sideways
Pathfinding – moving infantry units pathing near larger vehicles can be temporarily delayed until vehicles have moved
Pathfinding – large ground vehicles (tanks, dreadnoughts) moving close to each other can become stuck if moving & stopping close to a cliff
Pathfinding – units with a melee leap / charge attack may circle in place if attempting attack a target on a cliff that is outside the jump range
Pathfinding – vehicles can become stuck out of bounds if buildings are placed on the edge of the map and surrounded by other buildings
Pathfinding – infantry units can overlap when large squads are capturing a Strategic Point
Pathfinding – units on opposing teams can occasionally overlap with each other when moving to perform melee attacks
Audio – Engine sound effects on the Tau Barracuda are played too frequently
Save/Load - saving a game when certain abilities are activated then loading can lead to the ability being permanently active
User Interface
Text Entry – the vertical text cursor indicating that you can enter text (ex. Save game name) is occasionally missing in some text boxes at certain resolutions
Army Painter - some unit models are aligned slightly too high on the screen
Invitations – accepting an invitation while currently Automatching will fail on first connection and require a second invite
Missions – The arrows on objectives may stop appearing when playing several missions in a row
Multiplayer – the profile when double clicking on another player's name shows a blank card with "PlayerName" as their name
Multiplayer – an incorrect error message is displayed when backing out of a multiplayer lobby
Multiplayer – the screen may briefly show as black when loading into a multiplayer game
Scrolling – mouse scrolling is faster than expected on shorter lists (ex. Army Painter badges screen)
HUD – the HUD components can overlap when playing at a 4:3 aspect ratio resolution
HUD – hotkey callouts temporarily disappear when going into the Options Menu
HUD – the Faith resource for the Sisters of Battle is slightly misaligned with the background
HUD – unit statistics (ex. Melee damage) do not update when a Commander unlocks Wargear in the Dark Crusade & Soulstorm campaigns
HUD – the Imperial Guard HUD can show a skull icon when minimizing the HUD during Winter Assault missions
Loading Screen – the Stronghold mission briefing text for Dark Crusade & Soulstorm does not have the background gradient and can be difficult to read
Mission Failure – when losing a mission in Dark Crusade an incorrect text string is displayed
Honor Guard – The Chaos Commander icon can be hidden when selecting an Honor Guard after certain Wargear is equipped
Localization – the font size for Simplified Chinese is smaller than expected in a small number of locations
Menus – drop-down menu selections can occasionally require being clicked twice to register
Lock Cursor – the cursor no longer will lock to the screen after using Alt+Tab to switch focus
Unit Portraits – Davian Thule's portrait in the command card is Gabriel Angelos when Thule is on the battlefield
Unit Portraits – the unit portraits across all armies have a variety of defects and artifacts - New unit portraits have been authored but did not meet our expectations for presentation & legibility and were therefore removed from the game in favor of upscaled versions of the original source. These will be revisited in the coming weeks – see our blog for more information
Art & Animation
Faction Selection – Commanders can appear overly bright in the Dark Crusade & Soulstorm faction selection menu with certain hardware configurations
Wargear – The Tau faction leader can appear too transparent after equipping the Stealth Field wargear
Maps – Capture points (ex. Strategic Points) are not visible in the shroud – beyond the fog-of-war.
Mods
Installation – mods with legacy installation instructions can incorrectly instruct players to install the mods in legacy folders - see our updated modding instructions post
Launch Arguments – using launch arguments to directly load into a mod can lead to viewing legacy art assets in the menu screens
HUD – mods that created unique HUD art do not stretch to fill the entire screen and can have black bars on either side of the screen
Note: Mods that were built when the Dawn of War only supported 4:3 aspect ratio resolutions or stretched widescreen will only display in 4:3 until manually updated by the mod author(s)
HUD – not all components of the HUD can be overwritten by mods (ex. Unit portraits) without updating them using the BurnerTools - see our updated modding instructions post
Campaign Conversions – mods for Dark Crusade & Soulstorm that replaced the Campaign Map with a screen that mimics the linear flow of the Original Game can fail to load
Custom Screens – mods with full replacements of screens (ex. Army Painter) can have misaligned text and buttons
Environments – modders cannot disable water reflections, making non-reflective liquid materials (ex. Lava) overly bright

I don't know that I've ever played Dawn of War.

Does it look/play like Company of Heroes? I see there's building/fighting/collecting and protecting points on a map etc

Yes. It is very much built on the same formula as COH. It is one of the greatest RTS games of all times in my view.

Technically the other way around: CoH is built on and improves from the DoW engine!

Some really nice formal campaigns for DoW, but the mod scene is really where it's at now. (Some of the mods now help upgrade the original game campaigns, though the new DE may make those campaign mods obsolete, unsure.)

You're correct. DoW predated CoH by 2 years!

I would say that the DoW1 series, even the last one Soulstorm, is simpler to play than even CoH1. I don't mean there are fewer toys -- thanks to the mods there's an insane number of toys to play with (which the DE is theoretically supposed to help with by providing better overhead for the mods to run.) But the mechanics of DoW1 aren't as busy.

Just to pull an important comparative example that occurred to me, you can't go around in DoW1 picking up stray unused or unmanned weapons and using them. Nor are mannable buildings even a thing.

Now, you can do those two things in DoW2 (especially mannable buildings), which is why I thought to compare them. But not to the same extent. And the RTS side of DoW2 has been rather lacking: it's really designed as a hero squad tactical real-time shooter. (You can pause and give orders like in CoH though.) The DoW2 story campaigns are very well done, but it's a significantly different kind of game than DoW1 or the CoH series. (I have zero experience with DoW3 so I can't comment there.)
