I'd hope that they there was a chart or graphic that identified the counter symbols.  I think it's a cool idea to use era organizational symbols, but it'd be interesting to read some history of graphical organizational symbols.  I'd be very surprised if there were codified symbols prior to last century.

  Oh there are plenty of charts with this game, including one that covers what the symbology means.  I'm trying not to make the sort of mistakes I made with Grand Tactical games like No Question of Surrender where the German engineers had this double arrow thing on top of their motorized box thing and I thought "Wow, motorized heavy Machine Guns!"  They had begun supporting a heroic assault (in a practice scenario against the Italians) when some real machine guns opened up on them and the truth came out.

   Certainly during WWII, the French, Russians, Italians and Germans all had their own symbologies and they don't often resemble NATO symbologies.  To make matters even more -- well neato -- from my point of view, in the Grand Tactical Series units have vehicular modes and you have to read the vehicle type off the vehicle image -- but the counters are 3/4-inch so its more of a treat than a chore.

    I have had some puzzling moments with the tiny Russian symbologies in the Wintergewitter game -- the light AA symbol is exactly the same as the NATO-ish mortar symbol and the AT symbol is a T (I guess that's a light fieldgun kind of symbol?), but the proficiency factors were so bad I thought maybe the T was for "training " or "Railroad repair workers"...ie the letter T not the tiny fieldgun-cum-AT-gun T.

There is an option in the PC game Graviteam tactics to use German symbols.

Not sure but didn't Streets of Stalingrad also use German symbols?

Indeed it did. Also used round counters for (AAA?) if I recall correctly. Boy, what a huge game that was, although easier to play than SPI's Atlantic Wall.
