I like the look of some of those 4.0 upgrades. The roads are a big improvement. But the way vehicles sink up to their axles on what looks like firm ground and roads is odd.
They are still working on 4.0 so that may change.

D.O.W. Saturday Mission 14/05/16 @ GMT19:00

Enforcing peace by Redwardancer

This scenario is a simulation and does not have any political message.

Mission Summary :

Date:  2012/2/9

In 2012, Somalia was suffering from a civil war that stretched the entire nation. The country was split into eight different regions under control of over twelve different factions struggling to take control of the nation for their own purposes. The Somali government led one side with the help of militarian and humanitarian aid from the UN and the African Union (AU).  On the side were the anti-government rebels called Al-Shabaab, who is the strongest faction supported by Al-Qaeda.  Al-Shabaab recently took control of lesser terrorist groups in the area which boosted their firepower.  With the help of more manpower and vehicles, Al-Shabaab decided to make their big move.  Their ultimate goal is to take over Somalia by means of a massive nationwide invasion before the UN sends more help.  In the Galguduud Province, the capital seat of Galinsoor is one such initial objective in their plans to overthrow Somalia once and for all.  It just so happens that the UK sent small units to Somalia as peacekeepers in disgust over the United States' lack of initiative of providing initial support no thanks to the Senate's budget cuts and the American people who have lost care of the happenings in the world.

Excerpts of the battalion commander's (HAVOC 6) orders for...BLUEFOR (D.O.W.)

1) SITUATION:

a) Enemy:
Al-Shabaab is estimated to have over 8,000 fighters and a good number of them are in the area.  They have guns, vehicles, APC's, and even a few tanks.  Numbers are unknown, but they are definitely here.

b) Own:
We are B company, 1st Royal Welsh Regiment of Dragoons, 12th Armoured Infantry Brigade.
              Our forces consists of:
                                                      CO and XO, (Challengers)
                                                      1st platoon, (Challengers)
                                                      2nd platoon, (Warriors)
                                                       3rd platoon, (Scimitars)

c) Attachments and detachments:
                                                                  1 medic, 1 repair, 1 supply truck, 1 MRV
                                                                  3 air strikes on call

2) MISSION:

B Company must defend the area and destroy and Al-Shabaab forces who attempt to take control of Galinsoor or attempting to make a breakthrough to the east.  We must also protect the civilians in the area.  We have no reinforcements to call upon as we are the only units in the area, while the rest of the regiment is still in Mogadishu.

3) EXECUTION:

Company Attack

Intent: Defend the city of Galinsoor and the inhabitants of the province.  Destroy any and all hostiles directing any aggression against you or the natives.  The enemy may approach from the North, South or West.  Only the East is safe from enemy approach.

  a) Concept of Operation:
Find the enemy as they may approach from different directions.  From there, deal with the enemy as you see fit.  We will be outnumbered, but we have superior equipment, training and air support should things get hairy.

The sinking in of vehciles is determined by the softness of the ground. Problem is that there is no mud and track simulation that will make the softness obvious.
As far as I understood, the softness factor currently gets also used on the roads that are on this ground, so yes, that looks odd...lets see if the final release will have that fixed (?)

Marder with interior and a Luchs...all cool, but...

Check out how you can manage platoons and individual vehicles.  So you can run it like a Combat Mission-level tactical simulator.  You could always kind of do that, but with 3.0 and 4.0, its looking like you can actually play a CM-type game with SB.

You must multi crew for this mission, TC,Gunner and Driver. No Vehicle will roll without a full crew, unless there is 2 members left and not enough to fill the last vehicle.

I'm thinking I may be getting SB 4.0.  There is an awful lot of meat on this update!

I'm not holding my breath for a June release - We are a week away from June, and 4.0 is still being beta tested.

May very well be (hopefully, not, keeping fingers crossed) that the testers found new blocker bugs. There's at least one that absolutely has to be addressed, related to line of sight calculations, which are both functionally a centerpiece of the simulation as such, and performance critical at the same time (so we can't take shortcuts here).

At the same time we have a race against time as we have contractual obligations to meet certain other deadlines. That could mean that we have to concentrate on that new project and that we'd be forced to delay the release of 4.0 substantially. So, there clearly are a number of open issues that could swing one way or the other.

Next week Slitherine is releasing three US Panzer Corps grand campaigns. Those should hold me over for at least two weeks. Apparently in July Eagle Dynamics are selling the F-5 module as well. We've waited three years for a content upgrade for Steel Beasts, a few more weeks won't hurt.
