After watching the Gametrailers video, I broke down and pre-ordered. Anyone know if I can gift Civ V that comes with pre-ordering? I already own it.

Yep, you can gift it. Bring up the Steam client, then press that button in the upper right area that looks like an open envelope (it will be just to the left of the text reading '(your account name)'s account') and select the line reading something about new items in your inventory. Your giftable copy of Civ V will be there. You can either send a link to it to an email address, or choose someone from among your Steam friends list.

I don't know why I'm holding out - I'm having an op on my leg next Tuesday and will be off work the rest of the week...

oh yeah - I remember why - because it's not released in the UK until Thursday so I wouldn't be getting access to it whilst I was off.

Oh well - still holding out

Have you registered the code on Steam?  If so, you can gift it directly through Steam, and if not just pass the code along.

One thing that concerns me after watching some more videos last night is that it appears base improvements have to be unlocked, as opposed to all the rooms being available from the beginning with money and space being the only constraints, as in the previous games.

I obviously don't know if that's in the game or not...but I'm not a huge fan of that kind of mechanic. I guess it's used for balance - but I just get the impressions it's on rails when things are locked "artificially".

I'll still hold out - I'm in no rush - having rediscovered DCS simulations....and for once I'm actually getting into an AGEoD game!

What works for me is this:  I found out awhile back that if I take a new game like this completely on its own merits, without comparing it to fond old memories of a game from 15 years ago......it turns out being a much more enjoyable experience.  So often I see posted things like, 'this is going to be the next Master of Orion' or 'the next Diablo' or 'the next Xcom', or 'the next Master of Magic'.....for me, just let the old games go and have fun with the new game.

Rayfer, quite right, to me that is about the only fair thing to do. With so many years between the old and new renditions they can't possible be the "SAME" game as before and might not provide the same attraction/attachment. Concepts, stories, & gameplay mechanics may be similar but certainly the graphics, sound, voicing, environments are often quite different.

When I was younger there were way fewer titles and the stand-out ones really tugged at our hearts and remained on our hard drives like forever. The years have sort of dulled my "attachment" meter and I just don't get that weepy eyed over pc games, as I used to. Games are games and should be placed in perspective and among priorities. That's not to say we shouldn't have as much fun and entertainment during our recreational/hobby period (this should be for a healthy balanced life).

Just...don't be disappointed if the new X-Com isn't as "good" for you as the old one. However, I still think it's DANG exciting to have a new X-Com coming.

Being reported if you bought from steam, preload is now available....12.3GB

Greenman gaming has it for the preorder price of $44.95.  You not only get the same goodies  everyone else is offering, (Civ V, etc.) but a $10 credit as well, effectively making the price of the game $35.  I got a Steam code immediately after placing my order, and am pre-loading now.  The catch is the offer is good in North America only.

Still....holding...out....must...resist!

I don't know why I don't pre-order the damn thing - chances are I'll be buying it on release anyway!
