China is growing incredibly fast. they will be able to produce western standart weapons in a few decades. no denying that. they are producing an extreme amount of engineers and from what i see in our university, they have very ambitious young students with incredible perspectives. but they also struggle with stability and the economical changes will not unlikely awake the wish for more changes.

my guess is that china's main concern will be it's domestic policies for the decades to come.

Their economy has some similarity to a giant ponzi scheme. When all the internal building and development contracts run out of money... there's gonna be a whole lot of unemployed professionals and skilled labor not happy with choosing between hustling menial labor in the city or indentured farm work. Maybe then comes a Chinese Spring... or, more likely a Chinese Winter.

And remember the huge gender gap. That won't be pretty.

We had a stretch of highway build here in Denmark by chinese.
They did it under budget  and build about 30% faster then budgeted.

Ofcourse next stretch were going to use danish workers again at over budget and slower then budgeted as per usual

We, collectively, have no idea of the scope and magnitude of the things
and changes that are happening in China.  My friends who have been there
recently have described it alternately as awe inspiring or terrifying depending
on what it was.  One day this ingrained attitude of superiority is going to get
a sharp kick in the nuts.  Just look at some of the threads on here.  Some of
you guys should be really careful of who you hold in contempt.

Why? Does the Ministry of State Security have wetworks teams running down our IP addresses because it's feelings have been hurt? Are you a Chinese operative?  ???

No.  Not at all.  Although that is hardly a surprising response ^^
but then again maybe it is coming from you who I would expect to
see the point.  Big things, really BIG things, for good or ill, are happening
in China and you wouldn't want to look silly by arbitrarily making
fun about ancient Made in China stereotypes.  Plus they bought all
your rapidly increasing debt and theoretically own your collective butts.
That is all.  Nothing else.  Stuff is happening there on a scale you will
not see in Paducah until They decide to go There.

My point about the potentially severe risks of China's internal overexpansion is valid. Other than that I haven't said much of anything to denigrate the the Chinese other than question their leaders' motives on occasion. My comment above just pokes fun at your supposition that Chinese soldiers are likely to appear down the street from me setting up checkpoints. While the long term future is unknowable the biggest threat that China poses to me and my family (assuming we are not harmed by a defective Chinese product, a statistically unlikely but not impossible occurance) is that a major Chinese economic collapse will damage the global economy and that possible subsequent civil unrest could lead to a major war with or between large nations such as Russia, India, one or both of the Koreas, Japan, the USA, etc.

I did not mean a military or political threat at all.
Not directly.  There are a humungous number of them
over there and they aren't all running Chinese restaurants
and laundries or sitting around in rice paddies playing "Go".
They largely stay home and we never see this stuff like
buying up as many used B747's as they can, rebuilding them
to hold 500 peeps and using them to fly low level moving
around millions of people in between cities bigger than
Chicago which we never heard of.  It is said the mass movement
of people from rural China to the cities during the last decade or so
is the biggest mass movement of human animals ever.  Stuff like that.
And if they do get stupid and crash their economy like they are trashing
their/our environment the implications for us are grave.
What they do matters.

I'm not sure what your point is since I just said the same thing above. Twice.

my best friends brother lives there. he is actually a catholic monk, a Salesian. he is leading a school in china.
he sometimes tells amazing things. like having to talk with chinese governmental dudes about catholicism.
they were quite interested in the religion as their analysis makes them believe that this religion will actually
support the government rather than trying to install a religious reign.

they are now allowed to teach there but not to conduct any religious acts. i was quite surprised to hear this.
he also gets frequent phone calls from strangers that urge him into discussions or stranger approaching him
to have a chat: it's the local security branch keeping an eye on him and giving him a feel, that his actions are
being watched.

Meh.

I suspect like most places in the world the average Joe over in China doesn't give much of a rip what happens, but there are some leaders at the top who are interested in less than noble motives.

Then again, look at Tiananmen Square: the Chinese have far more to fear from their own people than they do from the US.

Being a Canadian I always knew if USA farts my house stinks for a decade.
I was saying that now it matters when PRC farts.  Others were making fun
of Chinese stereotypes and suggesting the topic was meaningless and yourself
was making it into some kind of a threat which could be ignored like military or security.
But what happens there is becoming more relevant to us daily as they get bigger
and the world shrinks.  I think the days of being able to sit in Fargo and not give
a rat's ass about what happens in Beijing are passing although some will cling
to that attitude.

And I'm saying Beijing has far more to worry with what happens in its own rice fields than it does in Fargo or DC.
