Oldies but Goodies and replayability

Im getting ready to sit down and do some proper raven-shielding this week, and have lost days to sim city 4 and Civ 4 recently. Whilst at no point do i claim any of these to be classics, is anyone out there still booting up older games and enjoying playing 2008s releases in all their graphical splendour as opposed to rocking back and forth on the sofa waiting for the next big release to come out?

I have a boatload of old games and I love to play/replay them. I can live with the graphics on most games done in the last 10-12 years.

I rarely revisit a game. Precious few titles get a second life once I'm done with them. No idea why, but it's how I'm built.

Sometimes I get tired of a new game and boot up a PC game that I've had for nearly twenty years. I have plenty to choose from stashed in my former game room in a small building behind my home, along with vintage PCs capable of running DOS and older versions of Windows.

So if Steam went belly up, SOE's Station disappeared, Uplay and Games for Windows Live went out of existence, or even should the internet cease to exist, I would still have hundreds--perhaps thousands (I quit keeping track in 1994)--of PC games to play.

Just in the last year, I re-played Baldur's Gate, I never finished it the first time, and completed for the first time Planscape Torment. Both excellent games even today and I'm occasionally re-visiting Icewind Dale 2. I've thought long and hard about buying the whole Might & Magic series from GOG but I don't think I'll live that long. I also confess to missing greatly the original Combat Mission series especially CMBB.

I'm a frequent revisitor too and not just to PC gaming but also console and arcade. IMHO Replay is value is everything in a game. Nowadays I don't get dragged too easy by eyecandy. I can also live with the graphics of the last 12-14 years with no problem.

Every few years reinstall Master of Magic, Master of Orion 2, Jagged Alliance 2, and X-Com.

I've actually played Railroad Tycoon 2 Platinum a good amount in the past couple weeks.  It's even older than 2008.  :)  I never realized how much of a victorian-era business 'sim' and builder it was, rather than my old impression of it as just piddling with trains.  :-[   The screen resolution is max'd at 1024x, IIRC, so pulling my monitor up to Retina-Burn Range is the only drawback.

Still.. it's not very click-fest or stressful IMO so it's easy to fire up, which is always nice.

Also done some John Tiller's Battleground Civil War in between, too.  Since JTBG Napoleonic also has the original Age Of Sail included, it's also ready to go.

I've thought long and hard about buying the whole Might & Magic series from GOG but I don't think I'll live that long.

I've enjoyed the Might & Magic 4-5 "World of Xeen" series.  It's definitely old 90s but quite possibly the best first-person party based RPG of the DOS era.  The later ones in the series that have a 3D world (with 2D "billboard" entities in it) lost some of the old-style charm IMO.   I'm gonna eventually jack around with putting one of the Android DOSbox versions on my Kindle Fire and pop M&M4-5 on it since you can use the whole interface via mouse cursor (which is the DOS games that supposedly work best in that environment).

I still play a number of games that are 10-15 years old.  Classics rarely get old for me.  :)

The only "old" game I revisit from time to time is Morrowind. The only other games I wish I could get running on Win7 64-bit are Star Wars Dark Forces, Dark Forces 2, and Aces of the Pacific. Other then those I tend not to play games older then 2005 or so. I usually don't care what a game looks like as long as the gameplay is good, but I find older games just don't scale right with modern monitor resolutions.

Geek, you forgot Shadow Magic!

Yeah, there are some classics I still play, one notable example being Disciples 2 and, indeed, Shadow Magic.  As long as the graphics aren't too terrible (or super-low-res) I'm fine with oldies.
