Yeah I thought of using the frogmouth or some medium but I value visibility more than protection. I'll probably experiment on some other variations to see if it helps me survive a bit more.

So you're using the Destrier then?  That's the heavy warhorse.

Toonces

Yes, the destrier.

I had another one of those Chivalry vs. WotR moments tonight.  Somehow I feel like I'm continually trying to justify why I think WotR is the better game, but it IS really all about opinion.

Anyway, I couldn't find a conquest server to join that had a reasonable ping, so I joined a big battle or whatever it's called in WotR...not the Team Deathmatch, the other.  Pitched Battle, that's what it is.  It was fairly lighltly populated, maybe 22 people or so.

We were fighting on one of the winter maps and I go up this set of steps with two other guys and we have essentially a meeting engagement with the other team at the top of the steps.  Everyone is in heavy/medium armor, and the opposite team at the top of the steps had polearms and spears.  We spent probably a good two minutes fighting back and forth, trying to find a break in each other's defenses to get a killing blow in, but the way friendly fire works as best I can tell is that you deal partial damage to the friendly, but you also do damage to yourself, so only two or three people could fight on each side without suiciding yourself with friendly fire.

The fight was very tactical, with a lot of back and forth before somebody finally killed an enemy knight opening a gap that allowed us to overwhelm the other guy.  I'll bet that took a good 1.5 to 2 minutes before somebody finally died.  He retreated a bit to his buddies and now we're having a pitched fight in a corridor spilling into a room, fighting at close quarters and struggling to get in a good shot with out TK'ing yourself in the process.  Eventually we overcame them, revived our fallen teammates on the floor, and moved into the fields where it turned into a jousting contest between mounted knights between the two bases.

It was very intense, but it was also a very paced fight with a lot of back and forth and tactical movement on both sides.

Unfortunately I'm one of the folks that has the terrible graphics corruption after a few matches that requires me to restart the game.  The winter maps seem to exacerbate the problem.  But anyway, it happened twice after one match each with pissed me off completely, so I booted up Chivalry.

Got onto a capture map with around 25 guys.  Total swing spam fest.  I'm sorry but I just can't seem to find what is so appealing to you guys after the couple of battles I fought in WotR.  After the capture match, which wasn't too bad but I joined late, we went to a team deathmatch.  I ended up 3 and 3, so I was doing ok, but really it was just so chaotic.  The map was small, and confined, and with folks throwing things in addition to the archers, it was just very, very chaotic and I had little time to actually think much.

When that match ended we went to a free-for-all which I still can't quite understand where the fun is.  Basically you run around like a chicken with your head cut off swinging at anyone and anything that comes near you before you get stabbed in the back by some guy doing what you're doing.  I didn't even finish that map.  I can't quite figure out how that is possibly fun.

I'm just not finding my sweet spot with Chivalry.  Everytime I boot it up, I come away disappointed in it.  I want to like it, I really do.  I wish they could slow the pace down by about 30% or something.

Gameplay aside, your post pointed out WotR biggest handicap = server population.  Both are multiplayer games and a thriving community is important.  Chivalry seems to have more players, better servers and no serious stability/graphics bugs. I have no choice but to play WotR with 200 to 400 ping.  And I hear high pings are actually an advantage in WotR.  Hehe.

As a result of our recent Facebook survey we have temporarily changed the squad spawn settings on all official servers.

Official conquest servers now have squad spawn entirely turned off.

Official TDM servers have squad spawn turned on along with "can't spawn in combat" and "spawn stunned". This means that when the squad leader is close to enemies you have to wait to spawn at their location, and when you do spawn there's a small stun-delay before you can move.

This change is made to get feedback from all you players about squad spawn settings on official servers. We will adjust these settings if needed after an initial short period of trying them out and gathering information.

The War of the Roses team would like to thank you all for assisting us in creating a fun and optimal user experience for all of our players.

Please post any feedback you may have about the subject in this thread!

I've not had a problem finding a populated server in WotR yet.  *shrug*  And my ping to many of the US official servers is <100.  Are they all on the opposite coast to you, or something?

I think the problem is that the 36 player limit servers get filled up rather quickly and people tend to sit it out, waiting on a spot.  I have jumped into a game, waiting on a <100 ping full server, with a handful of other people on a conquest map.  At least it's good for ringing up some flag cap points and some 1v1 or 1v2 stuff.  All too often get hacked down by multiple people around me so it's a bit less stressful for a change.

I jumped into a few of those chaotic Chivalry free for alls too and hated them.

I tend to get pretty noticeable fps slowdown on the winter maps.  I'm wondering if their particle effects for weather are causing issues.  The fps also tends to start dropping after a couple hours so there's probably some memory leakage in there too, although it takes awhile.

I just can't get into Chivalry's combat that much either.  While you spam some swings in both, the extremely basic system in Chivalry just doesn't do it for me.  There's pretty much no armor modelling - heaviest armor being a slight 'hit point' bonus - so all swings do pretty nasty damage (and make your body parts fall off no matter where they land, at times  :-\).

Chivalry's combat is just too arcade for me.  While the long fights in WotR need to be adjusted still (as in the upcoming patch), I'm quite happy with how detailed it is.  Swinging away, only making minor hits on some heavily armored guy and finally connecting with a sword slash through his helmet visor or swinging an axe up into his loins for heavy damage feels a lot more rewarding when you pull it off.  It's also more difficult for the same reasons, so it's also not for everyone, however.

I still fire Chiv up every once in awhile, but just find it too shallow for my tastes.  I dunno how long I would sing the praises of WotR, however, if the devs weren't listening to customer feedback and adjusting their game mechanics appropriately, in what I believe to be the right direction.

Nefaro,  I am from Asia. I usually play with Australians but there's just not enough players.  We join US servers with no ping caps. Last time they implemented max ping a lot of people protested as it made the game unplayable. The game is no fun with few people.  And there are only a few nicely populated servers during my play time and it gets filled pretty quickly.

Once I can't find servers, I go play Chivalry. Lol!

Ahhh!  That explains it!

I've seen reports about blocks/parries not working against people with over 200ms ping but I dunno if that's an oldie that's since been fixed.  Mine has generally been pretty solid but that may be on servers with ping limits.  I actually feel that way when play Chiv because sometimes it seems like someone's swing starts off already halfway done, in an instant, and that can be pretty frustrating.  It seems to happen most when I've already started swinging an attack and their own attack animation just pops up and hits almost immediately, in between the start and finish of my own swing.  Could just be the pace of the game, but I think even somewhat high ping makes a big difference in that one, too.

I'm logging on from Honolulu, so the west coast and, in a pinch, central US servers are the only viable options.  I jumped on a DC server the other day and got dropped pretty quick due to ping.  I tried going on that 64 player server out of Great Britain and that just wasn't playable.  I jousted a dude, we passed each other, and then about 1.5 seconds later I was instakilled when it finally registered.  I checked my ping and it was something ridiculous like 400 or something like that.

I think Chivalry has about 8000 people playing compared to 1500 for WotR, or some huge disparity like that.  I can't really understand it, unless it's because Chivalry was practically free during the Steam sale.

Yeah  looks like US central is where the action is.

WotR community almost died the day they implemented the ping caps. I think Chivalry is relatively thriving because more people are into mindless brawling.

It has been a good deal cheaper, for a LOT longer sale period too.

But part of it is how difficult WotR can be.  With Chiv, you just click or push the scroll wheel up/down, while WotR has that Mount & Blade style combat where you gotta 'flick' the mouse in one direction, after clicking, and hold it for a more powerful blow before letting off to swing.  There's a lot more to it, and it's more difficult to do in the heat of the moment.  Hell, I still have problems getting my up & down blocks to work very well because I naturally hold my mouse at an angle so the directly forward & back motions are a bit odd getting used to.  Toss in the extra difficulty of penetrating your target's armor, and hitting them at the weak spots in it, I can see how some people could get discouraged at first.
