So most of the time on VATSIM if there is an ATC at the destination, they vector you in?

Seems like a waste to pick STARS and Approach...

Anyone try FlyTampa scenary? I'm going to try the demo today.. but was thinking of getting the KBOS one (home town)...

Also I think I may have found a fix online for the wacky Altitude behavior on the Tristar, if it works I'll post it..

Tuna,
What he is saying is that in real life, not VATSIM, there is always an ATC to give you vectors on your approach.  VATSIM does not always have ATC available.

The point of doing a STAR is to standardize the way by which aircraft travel to an approach to the airport.  Imagine a really busy airport like LAX or ATL.  They can't have thousands of planes flying into an approach any way they feel like it.  So the standardize it through a STAR so that the approach controller has a single way of flowing aircraft into his approach.

As an aircraft flies a STAR, at some point ATC has to step in and sort planes into a proper flow to the runway.  Everyone can't be flying it at whatever altitude and airspeed they feel like it, even when there is some broad guidance on a STAR.  And ATC can always modify the approach if they have to.  So a STAR is a good starting point to getting you to the approach, but ATC will also have a say.  I'm not sure, but I would imagine that if you're flying IFR into somewhere like ATL clearance delivery might not even approve your flight plan and give you clearance unless you file a STAR.  In FSX they always clear you "as filed" but in real life that isn't necessarily the case; clearance can modify your flight plan if it's not correct.

I just picked up the FeelThere ERJ Regional Jets and EMB-175/195 package.  Downloading now.  I probably won't get around to flying it this evening, though, so impressions will have to wait until tomorrow sometime.

Jomni, on VATSIM. If you only have a Controller in the area you are taking off from. Do  you ask him for IFR clearance? Or do you type your intentions in chat and wait till you are in the air to contact him/her?

Yes that single controller covering the whole area will act as Ground / Approach / Tower to all uncontrolled airports.
Safest bet is to send a PM to him first and ask if he covers your airport.
He may not provide ATC to that airport if it is uncontrolled in real life.

How do you PM.. you mean just send a chat to the Comm he/she's on?... Getting close to grabbing UTX tonight.. lol.. feeling weak!

What program do you use for VATSIM.  FSInn or Squawk Box?

Squawk Box instructions: http://squawkbox.ca/doc/features/dotcommands.php
FSINn instructions: http://forums.vatsim.net/viewtopic.php?p=321835

I think I set up FSINN.. I haven't tried to talk/fly yet.. just observe.. to see if I can understand them.. some I can.. some I can't.. some people have really bad sound quality..

UTX seemed to lag me pretty bad.. I got it tonight.. turned off the street lights. .hoping that will help..

You can request for text chat if you're having a hard time understanding.

JustFlight is having a sale through Monday on their CLS 767 200/300.  It's normally $30, marked down 60% (about $12).  I used some points and just picked it up for less than $6.

From what I've read, it's just barely a step above the stock jets in complexity, but looks very nice.  Seems like a good jet to just get in and fly from time to time.

Being a regular flyer, I have some displeasure with FSX so P3D has some potential.
But for those with FSX, I still recommend you guys to stick with it unless you have money to burn.  It's not that different after all.
Best innovation in P3D is the use of DX11 and modern video cards.
FSX is CPU heavy and it does result into instability even if you have a top of the line computer when you max it out and have so many add-ons.

FSX add-ons can be migrated but not all will work.  PMDG is the biggest problem as they have an FSX lock.  But there is news (or rumors) that they will start supporting P3D.
My Aerosoft and Carenado planes can be installed in both platforms without any problems.
Environment add-ons like OPUS, REX and ORBX FTX Global support P3D.

Economic add-ons like FSEconomy and FSPassengers do not work.
Air Hauler works using legacy mode in Estonia Migrator. (but I'm waiting for Air Hauler 2)
But Virtual Airline ACARS work.

I tried to support X-Plane 10 last year but the damn program doesn't want to update anymore (a rare issue which unfortunately affected me).
