I lost my second ship in three days due to dodgy server issues.  I think I'm going to put this one down for a while and come back in a month or so.
How did that happen?

How did that happen?

I was fighting a pirate and losing so I fired up the frameshift drive, the countdown started, then the connection crapped out and dumped me to the start screen.  I wasn't able to log in again for about 30 minutes and when I did, I was dead, 21K credits poorer, and back at the station will all my accumulated bounties and mined ore gone.

I would've promptly rage-quit too.   :-[

Maybe the server load issues (and crashing?) will taper off before long.

As much as I love this game, that was the very reason why I was pissed when they announced that elite would not have an offline mode as promised. I have had this happen several times. If you're going to force me to play on your server, make the f-ing thing work

Plus, out here on the West Coast, the damn thing shuts off every night at 11 p.m.  Even weekends.  That's pretty close to the worst possible time for routine maintenance.  I know they're worrying about a buncha furriners, but still, I've never seen a big game do routine maintenance at 11 Pacific.

They do daily shutdown maintenance?!  :o

Definitely still some work left to do.  Memory leaks server side or something?  The only MMO I know which still does this is Eve and I think it's only down about fifteen minutes.  Still, that game is what... a decade old or more?  Used to get daily restarts in UO... in the 90s!  :P

I have had several connection issues - documented here.

Mostly, connecting in but occasionally in game I have been dumped too.

Details of the first content patch have been released:

http://www.pcgamer.com/elite-dangerous-patch-11-preview-community-goals-revealed/

QuotePC Gamer can reveal the new feature at the centre of Elite: Dangerous's first major content update. Called 'Community Goals,' these collaborative missions will be introduced in the 1.1 patch—due for release in early February. I talked to Elite's executive producer Michael Brookes about what this new addition entails.

"Community Goals are a new type of story-driven collaborative event," Brookes says. "Already players are working together to influence the power struggles in our galaxy, but Community Goals are a shared objective we can generate to allow vast numbers of players to collaborate towards the same goal."

...

Brookes also teases some of patch 1.1's other features. "Alongside a number of tweaks and bug fixes we're adding a shiny new gas giant shader," he says. "Gas giants now use a parallax shader which improves the feeling of depth within the layers of gas. You can see giant canyons in the gases of Jupiter and high level white clouds floating over Neptune.

"We also have city lights on the dark side of planets, which is something the community and the development team has been looking forward to for some time!"

Glad to hear it.  I was getting a bit worried by the silence coming from Frontier.
"As I understand from your communication, Mr. Engle, you're on the brink of self-destruction. May I shake your hand? A brilliant idea! I speak as one who has destroyed himself a score of times.  I am, Mr. Engle, a veteran corpse. We are all corpses here! This rendezvous is one of the musical graveyards of the town. Caters to zombies hopping around with dead hearts and price tags for souls." - Angels Over Broadway

Massive Effect

It's a big galaxy out there. Players have been out exploring Elite: Dangerous' full-scale recreation of the Milky Way since launch, and together you've discovered 615,475 previously uncharted systems of the 400 billion in our galaxy.
On a simple average, that's 17,585 systems per day, 732 per hour or 12 per minute. Good going, everyone.

But let's put that in context, because with 400 billion star systems to explore the community have charted just 0.00015 percent of our galaxy. Let's put it another way: if everyone keeps going at the current rate, it will take 150,895 years to map the entire Milky Way.

But with new players joining every day, we might just get the galaxy mapped before the turn of the hundred and seventieth century.

I've only been to about a dozen systems.   ;D

My idea from the start was to pick out a well-populated system and just run routes back and forth between that system and nearby systems.  The point was to stay in "civilized" areas and avoid early combat when I didn't have a craft that could take care of itself.  That worked, but even when I got a pimped-out Viper I didn't really see any reason to explore.  I make satisfactory coin running freight and import missions and I can find bounties when I looked for 'em.

Yeah - providing a reason to explore would be cool...if there's not a lot but stars, then it's gonna get tired quick
