So far it's a fantastic game. I'd even go so far (barring any major game breaking bugs) as to suggest it may very well be the RPG of the year. The turn based tactical combat is fantastic. I find that as I get older, and my gaming time more limited, I hate twitchy games. I hate having to react quickly with a mess of button mashing. I just like to sit and ponder my moves. It's been a good while since we've seen a truly turn based RPG with decent graphics.
I'm really just getting into it, so the crafting and character building is a big, gigantic cloudy of mystery, enigma, and what not. But there is oodles of depth to be explored.
Anyone else playing this game? I've started off my initial party with a fighter and a witch. I might regret the no healer, but I suspect I'll be able to get a healer to round out my party as a hireling. My understanding is you get the two characters you create and up to another two hirelings. I what I need is a thief type character too to pick locks. I love me looting locked chests without the need to bash them to smithereens first.
Anywho the game is good. Damned good.
Ok, even though I should know better I went and looked at this game on STEAM. It looks cool and it promises alot and Bison seems to like it but before I pull the trigger I would love to hear some other thoughts.

Is this something you've read or know from time in the game. If it is from time spent in game, how is the rest of the game?
Just saw that it was released today. Looks pretty good and I am looking for a RPG to play. As it's co-op and turn based, they may just get my money.
I picked up Divinity 2 during the steam sale and still playing that, it's a completely different game. I saw Divinity Original Sin on sale the last day of the Steam sale but, haven't seen enough info on it. It sure looks like the type of RPG I'd like, hope it's good but, just too leery of games that go on sale the day of release.
I quit work early to spend some time with it and it's great. I haven't gotten very far, just the tutorial dungeon and the first big battle on the beach, but combat is very intuitive. The only thing I wish is that once one character exhausts his or her movement points, the game would automatically switch to the next.
I'm playing with a fighter and a cleric, but may restart with something a bit more exotic.

I know because I bought the damned thing during the Steam sale and it hasn't been fixed in the 3 patches since. I haven't got any further than that because I turn it off as soon as I find that it doesn't work.

The $40 price tag is a little steep for me right now, and I want to see some more impressions from people I trust (looking at you, Bison), but, if it comes up aces, I can splurge. You'll have to be my co-op buddy though.

Well, if you guys buy the collector's edition, you could split the cost and get all the goodies...pretty good deal:) You can then spend $35, et the DLC (worth $9.99) and the two other old games.
"Includes two copies of Divinity: Original Sin, the Source Hunter DLC pack, plus Beyond Divinity and Divine Divinity. Send the second copy to a friend! (DLC will only be made available on release.)"

You can remap the keys, but you cannot remap 1-0. Those keys are the hot bar keys and I suspect the game cannot recognize the difference between 1-0 on the key board and 1-0 on the key pad that is on the same key board. I'm not sure I'd call it broken but WAD. It could be annoying if one is a southpaw, but there are work arounds. Remap to use arrow keys for camera movement, ect....anyway to each their own. I enjoy the game, but remapping keys isn't something I regularly do so it's neither here nor there for me.
Yes the game can be played coop. One character per player. I'm not sure how the dialog part will work. The dialog so far is generally focused on whomever is the "leader" at the time the conversation starts.

This is what I was going to recommend too. I didn't get the DLC, because I didn't really see a need for it. I'll let you know what I think of it Metaldog after I get a few more hours into the game. I'm only about 2 hours played so far, but I really like what I've seen so far. Ultimately I'm really excited to see how the fan base uses the developer tools to make modules for it. It really could have longevity like NWN if they released the tools correctly.
I will be watching for details....seems people throwing around it is the best ever...although every new game gets that title:)
Be interested to know what specifically makes this good....then I will have to buy myself:)
Sweet! Thanks, Bison.
And I have to go back and re-read that part about splitting the cost and getting two copies. Did I read that right?

Correct...plus you get the dlc and the two old games. Not bad for 35.
Bought it quite some time ago and like everything Bison has described, but for some reason I keep bouncing off of it. I'm just not getting really engaged with it in the time I'm giving it.
No question that it is a great looking tactical RPG - something I've been wanting to see more of. I fire it up, and don't go "ooooh, pretty!" like I did with Skyrim, play for ten minutes, and shut it down.

Possible clarification...according to some folks in another forum....the DLC and extra games might only go to the person who buys the game and only a game key is made available to the friend. Might want to check deeper before considering, if that is something your worried about.

Yes the game can be played coop. One character per player. I'm not sure how the dialog part will work. The dialog so far is generally focused on whomever is the "leader" at the time the conversation starts.
The dialog options when playing Co-Op is a mini-game in itself. When a multi-player party speaks to an NPC, and you get multiple options of replies of the stereotypical Good/Greedy type, then your own characters can do a little multi-choice conversation between themselves if you've selected different choices initially.
You can still see this in action when playing solo, between your two characters, but in this case you're choosing the arguing points for both. In multi-player, you can have a short debate over what to do via multiple choice convos. I'm pretty sure you can also turn this little mini-game facet off, although someone will probably have to be the designated NPC conversationalist.
I don't recall seeing a storyline RPG with Co-op play quite like this. Sure there was stuff like the NWN series, but this one has more integrated support for it. We may have to do some Co-op sometime, although you have one player create a pair characters, as the other can only join and take over one of those. In other words, you can't create your own character locally and join games at will. One host starts it up and the other joins. That game is saved on the creator's computer, so he just loads it up and you join every time you resume.
I've not played the official release version yet as I've been busy all day & evening. Judging from the five hours I played last week, it's a superb game. They've since added gigabytes of updates, so I'm looking forward to getting started in the next day or two.. I may wait a day to see if there is a quick patch of any sort even though the developers have stated that all future patches after release will be Save compatible.
So far I'm really enjoying it. Unlike most modern RPGs it doesn't hold your hand. I've been wondering around trying to find the damn tavern in the first town for about an hour now....I love it.

LOL. It's sometimes baffling, which qualities some people enjoy.
I think the non-combat wandering is one of the few Cons I've seen. I like to explore and find stuff, but walking back & forth down city streets trying to discover the local watering hole in a town doesn't fit my idea of exploration. Especially when you should just be able to ask someone nearby. ;D
But all the other stuff in the game is a lot of fun. O0

I found it. When I ran into the guild recruiter at the door I thought the tavern was some sort of guild hall. Exploration is one of my favorite parts in an open world RPG. I think I've spent at least 100 hours in Skyrim just wondering around.
What I've read is that if you join the game at character creation, both players get to make their characters individually. Additionally one cool feature that I was reading about is that the two players are not tied to each other, so one can mill around experimenting with crafting while the other is out exploring. Pretty cool. You definitely are going to have to like the person you coop with because you'll be spending a good amount of time wandering around and figuring things out. This isn't fast paced action like Diablo 3 or Torchlight 2.
I've spent a good 2 hours just wandering around the city talking to folks and searching barrels/crates/bags...my bags are starting to get the pack rat clutter I love so much in RPGs. I have no idea what to do with 99.9% of it.
There is a significantly steep learning curve with certain aspects of the game. Crafting comes to mind. All you get is hints in the books you find. That's the same with the quests. Hints and suggestions. Nothing more. So there is a good deal of thinking and problem solving that goes along with the game. It definitely harkens back to the old school isometric games of the 90's and early 2000s.
I will give one piece of advice. Save your game...a lot. Death comes quickly and unexpectedly. Not to spoil the game but let's just say I used my shovel on a pile of dirt and hit a massive mine. Both of my characters died immediately. I had to go back to my last save, which was a good 15 minutes prior to that point. NO!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyway it's not a game for everyone. The pace is slow. Lot's of reading and wandering around. The story is fairly typical fantasy. Marauding orcs and an undead problem at the start of the game. It's right up my alley. Also the camera can be a little wonky, by using the overhead view gives you 360 turning view other wise the "over the shoulder" view is about 90 degree turning limit. I don't get the design choice but there it is. It can be annoying, but isn't game breaking.
There is an option to turn off the camera rotation limits, IIRC.
If Kushan likes it I might have to take a closer look at this... >:D
I locked it up for a friend and myself. I have about 2 hours into it now andI am really liking it. It looks very nice; a great mix between realistic Shadows and lighting and cartoony objects and textures. Not something everyone will like, but I do.
And humour! The game shows a witty sense of humour throughout! From animations to dialog. Its sometimes even Monty Python - esque in its dry, brilliant humour.
For example I had let a conversation run out of hand between my heroes and two drunks which resulted in the death of those two.
While the conversation at first was firm and got darker, after the fight it suddenly became very pragmatic: "well, there you have it. Two dead.". Where my other character responded in an "oh well" fashion. Funny !
Sound is very well done too. Positional audio works well and the ambient sounds work well to set the mood of a scène.
I havent seen much of character development yet, but when gaining a level you get to spend a point on attributes and a skill.
The skills seem to funnel you a bit as I couldn't assign aa point to a skill with already one point in it.
Combat is truely fun and nicely animated! The environment is Dynamic as well; you van bash oil barrels to make an oil pool and light that on Fire by throwing in a candle or a Fire spell, etc.
Fire can be removed with water.
Poison with fire. Puzzles involve moving objects. It's fun.
And the First ability of the Battlemage never gets old! Literally there appears a Giant fist above the head of the target and stomps it into the ground, leaving it knocked down for a few rounds, haha!
Tpek wished the system would continue after having done a move in combat? It does switch to the next character but only if you spent ALL your action points.
Often 1 or 2 remain (check the bar with the dots above the hotbar) where you have insufficiënt AP for a move and therefore need to end turn yourself.
The unspent AP is added to your next move which is nice.
I started my first game with a Fighter and a Cleric and played a little past the tutorial dungeon just to get the lay of the land. Now I want to restart with a more interesting character combination. Suggestions?

Sounds interesting.....looks like you have to look and search through everything so you don't miss anything....just curious about the pile of dirt and mine. Was there any clue that you missed there was a mine under there or is it just random bad luck and nothing you can do about it? That would frustrate me if I just died for that reason without possibly having the ability to notice it or defuse it first.
Also, is the game fairly scripted on dialogs and location of items? Or is it random during each play through? Just trying to understand replayability. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I joined the club.....ended up buying today but I happened to stumble across someone that bought the collector's edition and was trying to offload the second copy cheap....ended up getting for $23 (also includes the games Divine Divinity and Beyond Divinity) so I figure worth the risk at that cost:) I don't think you end up getting the DLC since I don't see that anywhere, but not a huge deal for me...if I like the game, can pick that up later.

The starting town is very similarly populated to games like Neverwinter Nights or Baldur's Gate (and I'm sure it's also like Skyrim). There are not hundreds of towns folk running around, so in that regard it may seem empty. This isn't something that ever really bothered me, but it's always been a feature of this style game. On the positive side you can have a dialogue with (so far) any of the towns folk. Some of the dialogues are repetitive but that too is par for the course. There is a nice set of ambient sounds and voices, so it helps create the feel of a more populated town. I wonder if developers don't eliminate the idea of needless (in terms of quest advancement) NPCs in order to improve game performance.

The only thing I'd caution you on about buying the game is the video card. IIRC you have an integrated graphics card and that might cause some performance issues. It should run but will take some tweeking to get playable frame rates if you turn down some of the graphics features like shadows, etc..
So question to this game type experts.....there is a ton to explore and that is the fun part. However, how do you keep track of what you already explored? What objects you already looked at? Ensure that you look at EVERYTHING in your surroundings? What people you talked with? What buildings you searched? Should be a way to mark what you have done:) Seems very easy to miss things if you don't have a strategy to determine what you have and have not explored?
You can create custom map markers to mark locations/people/things. For example just prior to getting slaughtered by some skeletons, I marked a chest location. My hope is to come back later with a thief type and pick the lock. Mostly because I want to auto save and test whither there is a decrease in loot type/amount when one bashes a chest open or picks the lock. In NWN2, I remember that if you bashed the chest open the gear inside would turn into trash. Not getting stuff from chests makes me a sad bison.

The game lets you make notes on the map, or you can go old school and get a notepad and paper, or a iPad, and take notes that way. I'm only 3 hours in, and I've already started a Google doc to keep track of things like quest objectives, and even the direction to go to a point of interest or objective. even with that I've still found myself back tracking a lot.

lmao - if only for the hidden boob reference
do you create just the one character? or better phrased are you just in charge of your character or do you control a party?
the last game i played like this was the first dungeon siege
You custom create two characters and can have up to two additional NPCs join your group. You get full control over them all however.

The only thing I'd caution you on about buying the game is the video card. IIRC you have an integrated graphics card and that might cause some performance issues. It should run but will take some tweeking to get playable frame rates if you turn down some of the graphics features like shadows, etc..
Is someone gaming without a real video card?! :P
It runs okay on my GT640M notebook. Not a good video card but it gets by smoothly with most games, given some gfx adjusting where needed. It actually runs
Divinity okay on so-so settings but it runs hot.
So I tried out the new Steam In-Home Streaming and ran it remotely from my Desktop to my Notebook. I could then run it at Maximum settings without my little fan going full blast on this thing. Worked just fine although there was a slight degradation in the overall clarity of the graphics. It wasn't bad IIRC. Anyway.. this option worked last I checked, if that is an option.
The patch notes from today's patch....

Not getting stuff from chests makes me a sad bison.
excellent....did not know about the map marking....good stuff
Ok, dumb question...how the heck do you place a map marker and make notes on the map?

Figure it out...looks like you have to click on specific places on the map before it opens the note screen...got it now.
Found my first little dungeon using my shovel and digging up dirt. Instead of being blown to smithereens, I found an entrance to a cave/or is mine complex with just the right level of skeleton for me to fight and gain experience. I also found my first NPC party member. He's a mage of some sort specializing in water and electricity. A deadly combination that I really like.

I find it much easier to resist buying games nowadays, thanks to my considerable backlog. If this had been released a year ago my attitude would have been "I
need this game!" and I would've found an excuse to buy it fairly soon afterwards. But now I can just shrug it off. I'm not missing out, really, because if I did buy it today the chances are I wouldn't touch it for months anyway.
I'll wait for the next sale at the very least.
2 questions: does it use AD&D rules for combat?
Also, can you find/buy better and better armor and weapons? I would assume there are tons of variety of weapons but wanted to axe someone
I see that.

No it's not an AD&D system, but uses an action point system to move, cast spells, drink potions, switch weapons, etc...
Yes is the short answer to the question. What I cannot tell you is are bought items better than found or crafted. I just haven't gotten far enough into the game to answer it. Perhaps someone else can give a better answer.
I keep seeing people mention playing "lone wolf " in the game forums what does it mean to play "lone wolf"?
Edit: never mind. Apparently it is a trait that can be selected
What does it mean? Playing without a group?
They are on fire with patches today:) Someone mentioned this is the 4th issued today alone....
Update 1.0.41.
Hello everybody,
Thank you for all your feedback. It's helped us fix a number of issues which were hard to track.
- Fixed: Crashes on saving
- Fixed: Dialogs locking up when talking to certain npcs with two players
- Fixed: Extremely big pool of blood
- Fixed: Cloud artefacts
- Fixed: Crash during unlearning active skills
- Fixed: Steam cloud saving (the Steam from Valve that is, the Steam cloud in game was already working :) )
- Fixed: German and French translation artefacts. You still need to manually activate the subtitles in the options screen. We'll make it automatic on the next update.
- Fixed: Corruption caused by video playback on Mac
For our Kickstarter backers - we've located the reason why you're not getting the DLC and are working on a solution.
Have fun!

What does it mean? Playing without a group?
If you take the lone wolf trait for one of your main characters (you get two main characters that you create at the start of the game), that character no longer gets the ability to recruit and use a hireling. Each of you main characters gets one hireling, so potentially you could have a party of four characters. The trade of for taking lone wolf is gaining an increase in hit points and other ability scores. Also I suspect it opens up a harder mode of play using only two characters as opposed to four in a party. Bragging rights or something.
Love it so far. My kind of RPG game compared to SKyrim and the likes.

Well that doesn't help. It also probably doesn't help that I am reading through the manual.
Its great you have a number of options to customize your character visually...however, dumb question....why does the portrait of your character (one that shows on game screen) not actually match your true character's appearance? The portrait will show a face that does not even closely resemble your characters face you created...not a huge deal, but thought they would match.
I found a portrait that fit my character fairly well.

Still not an exact match...just would have thought the portrait being based on your actual appearance versus some pre-defined image.

Welcome to the club! I don't think you'll regret it from what I have seen so far and I am not even usually a fantasy RPG type of player:) Been a little busy today to dive in deep myself, but hope to after the next few days...
The specter of a long weekend and an out of town girlfriend have me up against it! And the fact that it's co-op is REALLY tempting me!!!!!!!
I got it on one of the 20% sales, but I would've happily paid full price. O0
I spent a couple of hours with it tonight. It really is good fun. The Larian games always have been good old school RPGs.
I'm hoping for some lore and backstory, but even if it never gets there, the magic system alone is nicely engaging.
Spent more time with the game and even a friend gifted me the dlc......if you do get the dlc beware it comes with the quest design documents which is cool, but of course provides spoilers. I guess can be useful if you get stuck.
Judgedredd, where are you at? This is a new game thread and haven't seen you post yet....leading to your purchase:)
Somebody remind me about this game during the next Steam sale. :P
Just a post from the developer clarifying what you get when you buy the digital collection edition for those considering splitting the cost with others....
From developer:
When you buy the Digital Collectors Edition you get :
- 2 steam copies of all three games (1 copy for you, 1 copy as a gift), being Original Sin, Beyond Divinity, Divine Divinity
- 1 copy of the DLC
Note to be clear about the DLC ingame:
You do not need this DLC to play the game. It is also not story-related DLC. These are just unique items the host gets one set of when he creates a new game. He can pass this item along to the player in his co-op session if he wants to, but there will always be only one set per co-op session.
So if you and a friend both have the DLC, there will still only be one set of these items in the game session. Only the host controls the creation of the DLC, not the joining player, because this player is joining his story line session.
This would also not make sense lore-wise to have 2 times this unique item in the game world.
Again, if you own the DLC, this will allow you to create games with one set of the items. You can then choose to share these items with anyone joining your session.
downloading tonight
a pox on you all

Inventory management is a little clumsy. Plus, with a lot of stuff to be found (the game could have been named Divinity:Crate And Barrel Searching Simulator), no encumbrance model, and no idea early in the game what is and isn't useful, you find yourself carrying a lot of stuff around with no real way to organize it.

Actually there is a weight carried mechanic. On your character screen there is a carried wt/max weight allowed stat. I haven't hit the max weight yet, but I suspect it at a minimum slows down your characters movement speed.

There is? I'll have to look for that.
Look in the lower right hand corner. There is also a trait called packmule or something along those lines which increases carrying capacity.
Can you store merch in random locations on the map to get later, like in Skyrim?
^You can store them in your Homstead and even magically send loot there (it's unlocked during the main story).
I've got a little bit of time into the game and I am really enjoying it so far. I looks and sounds great and I am looking forward to recruiting some followers. I am still trying to figure out the crafting thing and as others have said what is really important to hang on to in my inventory.

i picked an assassin and a warrior as close combat specialists and in the first little bit of drama the assassins option had a little bit of magic in and i didnt think shed use any - i expected a knife to the face but theres little combat spells all over the place and i dont even have a wizard
although i did spend 30 mins making sure i picked up all the shells in the opening scenario(!)
Yeah I have the same builds...a warrior and an assassin (or a shadow warrior) whatever it's called. I dunno.. the female orc librarian keeps reading some part of a book and exclaims, ".. and then the Princess' red bottom blushed, and the knight [something or other vaguely filthy]. Hoe-ry Crap! It cost them 4 Million Euros to create D:OS? That's a lotta cram.
But this makes me curious...
QuoteVincke then said he plans to try to obtain the license for a mystery role-playing franchise - but stopped short of saying what it was.
"There was a certain license we tried to get, but they haven't replied to us," he said. "Maybe now they will reply to us! I'm not going to tell you, because that will ruin the chances of me getting it.
Hrmmmm.....
Trying to acquire a specific RPG license? I wonder if it was originally a tabletop or digital one?
Someone needs to do an Isometric PC version of Chaosium's old
Call of Cthulhu RPG. Or a properly detailed

Quicksave = F5
Quickload = F8
Use liberally.
I find myself having to reload mainly because I accidentally click on something I shouldn't or accidentally speak with an NPC while my weapons are drawn and THEN further screw up by hitting the #1 conversation reply (normally the default) that starts a fight with them when they challenge you. ;D
Must be careful.
I got killed by the city guards when I attacked a campfire. I put my cooking pot on it to see if I could craft some food. I couldn't get my cooking pot back and it pissed me off. So I did what any rational man would do. I drew my sword and attacked the campfire. The guards clearly didn't approve and attacked me resulting in a complete party wipe.

for pure spread of strategy - iw ould have thought one close combat and one long range stood at the back

I just drop that Oil pool spell around some enemies and then hit that with the Flare fire spell. It blows up good. The baddies are immolated and burning a few turns afterward. And the cooldown on those elemental attack spells are only 1 turn! Murderization.

"The difficulty level gives a HP modifier (+60/+15/-25% for easy/normal/hard) and the hard difficulty modifies chance to hit (you get -10%, opponents +20%)."
I'm having fun and picked up two NPC's for my party. does anyone know if there's a guy that tells me what the hell I'm supposed to be doing I feel like I'm just walking around aimlessly
Honestly you just need to look at your journal and try and keep track of the quest lines.
I am finding there is alot of freedom to go about quests and figure out the next steps. Some of the dialogue with important characters gives you hints but some of it I am having to figure out what to do on my own. Case in point, I needed to investigate a character and I found her house but it was locked. I tried to pickpocket her but my skill level was to low and I didn't want to just kill her. In the end I resorted to burning down the door to the house and busting inside. I am sure there was another way to go about it but the game let me do it my own way which I thought was very cool.
I'm digging this game. Haven't liked a RPG like this since Bg-2. It's good.

Another stupid question....
If you complete the tutorial quest at start of the game in the dungeon....once you are done with it, do you keep all the goodies you found and experience gained when you transition to the main game ? Or does everything get reset? I am still messing around in the tutorial so wasn't sure what happens after.

Or does everything get reset? I am still messing around in the tutorial so wasn't sure what happens after.
You keep everything. In fact, one of the items is vital to finishing one of the first quests (although another can be found in town).

There's a tutorial quest?
Maybe I used the word "quest" too strongly, but when you first start out, you have the opportunity to continue in tutorial mode by entering a dungeon...I won't spoil it for you, but happens at the start of the game in the early stages....the game warns you if you try and skip it to make sure you have a chance to do it.

I'm pretty sure you can go back to it any time.
I think I interviewed dungeon and walked around killed a few undead and mummies came out the other end don't remember anything spectacular about it
That's kind of my only problem with the game I'm walking around and I have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing. I keep asking everybody about who killed this guy and no one knows. then all of a sudden I'm supposed to be asking about some kind of staff but nobody knows about that either so I'm just a little bit confused as to exactly what I'm supposed to be doing

Yep, I don't think there is supposed to be anything spectacular about it, just a stepping stone in learning the game mechanics and the ability to pick up some items and such....
Hoping to get much more time with this game over the weekend so I can get much further than that:)

You've got to read the dialogue very closely as they give yous subtle hints but there is alot of exploring and figuring it out on your own that you have to do. If you get stuck read through your active quest in your journal and see what direction they push you in. They won't tell you exactly what to do but give you a push in the right direction.
Without doing the tutorial dungeon I didn't know about being able to split the party, move crates, burn poison clouds it was quite handy
Now restarted with Bob as a cleric... I figured the lore was talking about the adventurers cleansing the undead and unholy so Bob smites forth with a double handed axe and morganna has his back with fireballs
Yeah, read the guide and I have to start over. I'm all jacked up. There are people I was supposed to talk to that I never did. I don't like games on rails but I could use a little more help

Save yourself some time by not querying more than one of the 'generic' NPCs. If they don't show an individual name when you mouse over them, then they will just keep telling you similar useless stuff regarding your quests that the others of the same generic name do.

There is some kind of repeated pop-up text that tells you to go to the tutorial dungeon door, after killing the skeletons there and also if you stand around for awhile in that same location.
Did you ignore that text? :P
I'm slowly progressing along. So far of the NPCs I've picked up only the mage is really worth while IMO. The female knight is ok, but I already had a fighter so I'd prefer a thief or healer type.

weirdly enough i walked right up to the entrance but never clicked on it to open the door despite the warning - i was more concerned with throwing the big shell back in the sea

It still worth seeing what they have to trade, but you can do that without going through any of the dialogue options.

Somehow on this playthrough I managed to get both companions, which makes the early going a lot easier. Last game I couldn't manage to get either.

I got both my companions from one of visits to the imp in that "beyond time" place. I now have a ranger and battlemage as my main characters and a wizard and knight as my companions. I just need to level up my companions before facing some of the harder enemies.
I like the Mage because she can electrify water. My favorite spell is my shadow assassin who can teleport a person. Basically picked them up and slams the down

You will get a chance to "hire" a companion of any class, while still questing in the city. So you're not only limited to the Mage and Knight. They're not too expensive to hire, either. Just enough to make you not wanna switch often. I don't want to give away any spoilers as you'll get it unlocked whilst doing the main quest.
So don't let the two available freebie NPC companions restrict your character class selection (or customization if you spend your points manually).
I got the Mage at the Library, and then I hired a Rogue in my game (have a Knight and a ..Wizard as my mains IIRC).
Spent a fair few hours playing today still trying to solve the murder:)
This is definitely going up there in my fav RPG list.
Interesting tutorial videos, especially character creation...no idea if he is right or not, but at least talks through the selection process:)

Yeah. You really have to work to solve the cases. It's not easy
Just found a good tip:
QuoteI just realized not everyone knows this:
In combat, on the right side of the screen you have an icon that allows your character to WAIT. When he waits, he'll move at the end of the turn. So if enemies are out of range and generally there's very little to do, you click that button and let them move a little, maybe closer to the end of the turn there will be a better opportunity to spend the points productively.
I never noticed this button either, but it sure would've came in handy at times. I only noticed the "Retreat" button there. ???

You're totally free to leave Cyseal and go yonder, but that's a bit too hardcore for me on the default difficulty settings (I got totally raped by the undead roaming the countryside - the enemies will have higher level than your characters, so beware!). I'd advise to do as undercovergeek suggests, if you need more guidance. There's also
at least a couple NPC's you'd love to bring on your boat before even venturing out of the town, by the way.
Restarted with a ranger and a wizard. So far its going better then my ranger/knight game.
I think an all range party is the way to go. Melee either takes too long to get into the fight or spends to much time healing to be very effective.

You're right - being able to deal damage at any range seems to be the way to go. The recruitable NPC's I have found so far have been good to complement my initial fighter/battlemage build.

How big is the world?
The world currently consists of four big zones. There is a short loading screen in between zones, but you can play around in one zone for hours without ever seeing a loading screen, so one zone is actually pretty large. It's possible that more zones are added as a result of the Kickstarter campaign.

I'm really disappointed at how melee seems to be "under powered" compared to range. There are times when I just want to beat things with a 2-handed sword or axe.
How is the battlemage working out for you? I've seen several guides now that recommend not doing hybrid classes.
I dunno...my 2 handed warrior is pretty bad ass. Has 3 points in 2-handed weapons and 2 points I. Armor. Has 9 strength. I love putting him is the middle of three enemies and hitting that "whirly" thing where he swings around and busts everyone. I use another fighter, a shadow warrior and a Mage

I've actually delivered some really nasty blows with a 2-handed sword, even at level 3. I think it was with one I had found, and it had extra Crit Chance and some other bonus stuff on it. One-shotting undead bitches. ;) Reportedly melee starts doing more after you've levelled-up and equipped later on, too.
The major drawbacks to melee is that you have to either spend APs going after your target, or waiting for them to come to you. They also tend to get in the way of my ranged characters, blocking their shots, so positioning can be troublesome. Last is the fact that being the one(s) drawing the mobs' ire often results in my melee character getting surrounding (which gives his opponents bonuses).
I wish they would get the damn Cloud Saves fixed and re-enabled. It's one feature of Steam I actually use.
Can't switch between computers and play the same game right now. My current party is only saved on the laptop. :knuppel2:

Could be I just suck at the game. Hoping this new game goes better then the first one. First time through it seemed my party was dead 3-4 rounds into every combat. I don't mind challenging fights, but when they start feeling like I'm banging my head against a brick wall I quickly lose interest.

Yes, indeed. I have numerous flash drives for just such needs.
I'm a bit concerned it will screw up my Achievements, and since the saves are under a 'User' they may also have other conflicting stuff regarding game settngs & such (I have the same User name on both computers but they were created separately with different settings). No way to know until I bother trying, though.
Thing is.. the Cloud saves were working in beta and Larian said they were gonna re-activate them once they figure out what they borked with the official release. Not a high priority, I suppose. :-\ I do tend to switch between computers fairly often, so it would be nice to have it fixed.

whats this issue again?
The game doesn't differentiate between the numpad keys and the regular number keys running horizontally along the main portion of the keyboard. As a lefty, I remap controls to the numpad for every game I play. Can't do it with this title because, even though it correctly lists the reassigned keys in the menu, it doesn't correctly recognize the inputs. If I push the "2" key on the numpad, the game sees it as the "2" key above the Q and W keys and instead of responding as I want it to, it fires the item in the number two slot on the quick bar. Can't remap to the arrow keys either as it ends up assigning the key strokes to two items at once. It also won't respond to remaping the LSHIFT, LCTRL, and LALT keys to RSHIFT, RCTRL, or RALT. It simply doesn't recognize them.
Using AutoHotKey to create a macro that remaps the keys sort of works, but not cleanly. Might seem like a minor issue to some but not being able to remap the keys is a game killer for me.

That's the mirror complaint I have to games that don't use WASD to control the camera/movement, being right-handed, but the cursor (arrow) keys. It's usually not an issue anymore, other than some strategy games (like stuff from Matrix or an occasional indie).
So I can see how frustrating that can be. Although that doesn't stop me from playing them.
As for the skills.. I've just been clicking on the ability bar at the bottom to activate most of them anyway. Is this not an option for you?

Without giving to much away find out who all the chief suspects are and then find them, talk to them, snoop around where they may live or work and make sure when your journal indicates you have found new evidence that you follow the clues it gives you or go talk to the Legionnaire leader about it.

Yup, I can click on the taskbar but that doesn't fix the problems that the game has recognizing keystrokes from the numpad or seeing the arrow keys as double inputs and refusing to recognize the right shift, control, or alt keys. I found that if I use autohotkey and map the numpad controls to the WASD and other stuff in the default control config, I can play reasonably well but there are still quirks that cause problems.
One of the devs said it was on their "to do" list when I emailed him but hasn't responded since with a timeline. I've got a big ol' pile of games to get through as it is, so I can wait for a patch.

To be honest, it is harder to use than a pure magic user. But "harder to use" doesn't mean "useless" - I like the combo between contact/short range spells like "Burning Touch" and a couple melee attacks with a low-AP weapon. As the character levels up, and I expand the diversity of damage types she can deal, she's probably going to be great (there's hoping). This is - from my point of view - a very nice balance between "high powered class at lowest levels" vs "high powered class at higher levels", which I found distinctly lacking in most cRPGs post Baldur's Gate 2. It also makes for a very tense early game :-)
Yes, melee seems to be "under powered" because of the AP expenditure it requires in order to close to the target. But that assessment is forgetting the tactical role of skills in this game (and there's a shit-ton of them, with probably huge numbers of synergies). The one I think is a must-have for any melee fighter is the one with the ram icon - I can't remember its name. It allows you to, for 6 APs to: close onto any target within 15m, deals some damage (not much) and has a good chance of dealing a "Knocked Down" effect on the target. The first significantly reduces the impact of AP expenditures, the second one is window dressing and the third one - when it happens - helps a lot in moving the odds to your favour (I tend to use it regularly against NPC magic users: if you knock down the magic user, there's no magic for the opposing side).
This perhaps the RPG with the most deep tactical combat ever that hasn't given up on other role-playing features: even if I am still dazed and confused by the myriad of options and combos, I can appreciate the thought put into each weapon, skill or spell.
These Larian guys have indeed made one for the ages, the Ultima VII comparison I see on the press is spot on.
PS: By the way, another detail which I love is the conflict resolution system, where one plays a series of rock-paper-scissors games, each game awarding points according to the level of the relevant skill to the contest.

Just took on a bunch of orcs all of which were a level above my guys. I lured them into a choke point with two barrels of oil and then my ranger destroy the barrels with a fire arrow burning three of the orcs to a crisp. I then fell back to minefiield I had discovered lured the remaining orcs into that and trigger it with my ranger killing another two orcs. Then my group consisting of a ranger, battlemage, fighter and wizard went to town on the biggest of the orcs that had survived. It it was a crazy fun battle and just another glimpse at how awesome this game is.

Do quests in town until you are at least level three. Then head out the north west gate to leave town
Yeah stay in the town and try and get to level 3 upwards before venturing out. Maybe risk just around the wall but don't go much further than that.
If you get in over your head don't forget about the flee button on the right side of the screen.
Also, always always quick save!
Really stuck on the murder mission. I have spoken to everyone many times have only found one smelly item which was useless.

Smelly panties = bonus Charisma. ;D
This is a really superb game. Properly challenging but also fair.
Like Tactical above I thought I had reached a dead end in the Town but started sneaking and breaking into locked buildings to reveal clues...There may well be other ways to get there but I am making progress again and the cheif suspect has (hopefully) now been identified !
Up to level 5/6 with my party , all of whom play very differently and I am getting very attached to them :smitten:
I am not an old school RPG fan having missed out of the golden era of BG, Planescape and Neverwinter but am a definite convert.
Recommended.
You definitely have to sneak around and get into people's stuff.
The game doesn't really tell you that, but there it is. ^-^

You can do more than wear them if you have the Pet Pals ability. They're "smelly" for a reason.
Oh God, I figured there was an alternative use for the smelly panties besides wearing them....
I have to get this game if only for the smelly panties = bonus charisma attributes.

Forget about Bioware's "dialogue-driven" paradigm of questing, that will take you nowhere. Think like a detective. You need to collect 'evidence' and confront the obvious suspect with it. That might mean doing confronting stuff. And take in mind that people will only get annoyed if you steal their stuff in their faces :)
I won't tell you more than that, I don't want to steal the feeling of satisfaction when you figure it out. And don't despair: the little detective story in the town is just the EASIEST bit of it :)
EDIT: Just a hint for the road: make sure you have someone capable of using a bow and some 'special effect' arrows (just collect as many Charm arrows as you can, don't sell them!). Besides that, if you combine their effects with what your magic users can do, they are a massive equalizer when you're outnumbered.

Or very excessive skid-marks.
I haven't figured it out either....although I killed the main suspect anyway. I tried to go into the suspects bedroom and was told not to. I responded "I go where I want" to which a huge fight resulted with the suspect and their guards. So without a confession, I may have "broken" the quest. Of so, screw it. I will find a new quest or start over

My character has a high "Offence" rating.
It's the way he rolls. ;)

There's a back door, Mike. Maybe the only complaint I have at the moment with Divinity is the camera - which is very constricted and sometimes one can miss out important details like that door. I can only wonder about that, maybe it's because of the shaders/rendering they're using (they restrict the camera to make sure the 'tricks' work and the scene looks good).
There is an option to turn of the camera restriction and give it a full 360 turning capability.
"High offense rating..." classic

All snickering aside. Seeing as how I went in the front door and not the back door, did I ruin the quest by wiping out everyone before a confession simply because I barged in her room?
I've not had any problems with the limited horizontal camera arcs. They obviously didn't place anything on the nearest walls and the default covers the rest.
It may sound odd, but I kinda like it since you don't have to worry about over-steering the camera around your character or losing your sense of direction in the process. The game content was obviously created with it in mind so I'm gtg.
New patch is out:
QuoteWe just released the first official patch for Divinity:Original Sin which introduces the concept of AI personalities.
During character creation, you can now select a specific personality for your characters. When a personality is active the AI will automatically make dialogue choices (based on its personality) for the avatar that isn't selected.
In addition to this, we've made a lot of improvements as well as bug fixes and balancing changes.
You'll also notice that you can now publish to Steam Workshop using the Divinity Engine Toolkit.
Here's the full list of changes:
- Save games are packed and compressed now
- Fixed issues when saving to a network drive
- Fixed unique drops over multiple sessions
- Fixed several tooltips
- Optimized syncing of action states
- Fixed leadership critical chance (didn't work)
- Changed leadership icon
- Better savegame error handling + a lot of sanity checks
- Levelswap error handling for levelcache
- 5% instead of 10%/warriorlore for Weather The Storm talent
- Raged lowers your chance to hit by 25%, but you don't lose dexterity anymore.
- Fixed issue where characters could sometimes stay in a closed dialog
- Dialog banter filter in the combat log
- Fixed trade autobalancer
- Unlearning a skill will cancel it if you were casting it at the same time
- Fixed issue with inventory tabs, sometimes resulting in missing icons in the UI
- Fixed issue where certain henchman were free
- Cannot hire same henchman twice
- Henchman will start with the Staff of Magus skill now
- Added more AI personalities
- Fixed a lot of issues where players were crashing after a level swap or after loading of a savegame
- Added 5.1 Audio on cutscenes
- Added video volume slider
- Reduced cloud artefacts
- Play movies before loading
- Small fix for getting quality preset from settings
- Sort display modes correctly
- Use dropdown for V-sync options + vsync tripple buffered is on in default settings
- Fixed memory leak in character creation.
- Fixed combat and chat log settings not being saved when quiting the game through Alt+F4 or closing the game window
- Added close buttons to the combat and chat log windows
- You can now rotate your characters during character creation using the left and right arrow keys
- Fixed stuttering in the texture streamer
- Seriously limitted amount of traffic sent during player movement and when executing certain actions.
- Fixed crash when texture detail is set too low (only possible through editing config file)
- No skill casting while a skillstate is busy (causing double skill casting)
- Fixed wrong trait names in combat log
- Changed default value of stored dialog amount from 10 to 50
- Fixed loading of formations
- Check talent requirements in character creation
- No combine in trade UI
- Fixed issues with crafting
- Fixed double Quick-Save issue when spamming Quick-Save button
- Less jitter in following
- Fixed telekinesis beam showing when moving items from inventory to inventory
- Use, repair, identify and equip items in context menu in picked-up containers and backpacks
- Repair and identify in context menu in containers
- Fixed crash when level swapping when overhead text is showing
- Sort on item type in inventory
- Reenabled hints for German and French
- Fixed crash when sitting on an invalid item
Divinity Engine Toolkit
- Fixed stability issues in certain preview panels
- Fixed uploading to the Steam workshop
- Fixed issues when trying to mod the story files

I am not sure if Larian put a fallback for that. One of the pieces at RPS on Divinity claimed that Larian quest design allowed for major characters to be killed. But probably is better to reload a saved game :)
Original Sin 2 has been released.
It reminded me that I still need to play 1!
The sequel looks great though and has some interesting features. Dungeon Master mode anyone?! Indeed, a DM can guide a party of 4 players on custom adventures in Rivellon! :bd:
I'm stuck on 1 and have given up. I really should go back to it and maybe start off again.
That's unfortunate. Was this in the Enhanced Ed.?
If not perhaps your issue has been fixed?
I played the game for a short while but it released just pior to a game I was really looking forward to (can't remember which anymore) at it pretty much slipped into oblivion unnoticed.
Its a shame because the game received various awards and I have always liked Larian's humourand style. I will make a point of starting 1 again soon.
It is the Enhanced Edition. I brought it in a sale (and a copy for the wife). I think the fault is partly mine as I tried to explore rather than concentrate on finishing quests, so I came to area's that really need my characters to be at higher levels.
Why have I not played this?
you have, but you were really drunk.
Hmm that checks out. Ok. 😎
