Anyone got it?
I watched a video and it kind of looked like Civ V in space. Not necessarily a bad thing, I enjoy Civ V occasionally, but for £35?? Seems a bit much for what I see as a "reskin"
Because it hasn't been released.
what you see in Steam is pre-purchase option.
Oh - apologies.
When it showed on the main page I didn't see it saying early access :-X

Not even early access... but pre-order.

That was my impression. That it's more like a Civ5 sci-fi mod.
Which is just fine, but for the price? We probably shouldn't be surprised. That X-Com remake's expansion was $30 and I think it's from the same publisher. I'll probably wait until this is on sale in the future, especially since I've never been able to dig into any of the Civ series very long.
Nevertheless, I'd still like to hear how it may differ.
I caved and preordered it. :P
It releases on Friday so this weekend I'll give it a good spin.
I'd love to have it...some day. I'm in no hurry so if it takes months to get to a super-sale price under ten bucks...so be it.
I'm just waiting for Friday 8)

Yep... preloaded it this morning..... 8)
I dunno. Even if I could justify full price for a game, these days that just doesn't appeal to me.
My son recently sold a bunch of kid games he doesn't play anymore and got a huge Steam credit; he went and bought the Borderlands Pre-Sequel for $60 and finished it in two days this past weekend. He seems to have enjoyed it so more power to him, but me, I want something that's going to last me months for that much money.
Not that Civ VI: In Spaaaace isn't going to provide that kind of gaming enjoyment. This just looks like a Civ V expansion, and the 200-turn video doesn't do much to show me how 'awesome' it is. Like I said: I want it and I'll get it eventually.
You guys that get it Friday, I hope to read how much you like it or hate it by late Sunday evening. :coolsmiley:
I've always been a huge Civ fan, so even if it is Civ in Space, I'm cool with that. Your tastes/mileage may vary 8)
Ha, well, I have 532 hours in Civ V right now...I know that's not as much as some of you but that's a hunk of lifespan.
Wish I could put my finger on it. Usually anything Civ-related gets me geeking out.
Yeah about time on CiV... I'm approaching 1500 hrs..... ::)
I almost didn't get this because "it looks like a CiV mod" as well.... but after seeing some more and reading again about how the game starts up, my curiosity got the better of my wallet....
so is it not Alpha Centauri redux?
Yeah, it seems like you will have a lot of options in how your society evolves and in victory conditions. It seems less cookie-cutter in many ways....although I've always enjoyed the Civ cookies anyway :coolsmiley:

Don't know for sure.... I hope not as I hated Alpha Centauri... another reason I almost skipped this.
What I want to see is a Civ game that lets you colonize multiple worlds. Now THAT would be Civ in space. This is just Civ on the same planet with different color terrain.

i blasted through it on release and finished it with a shrug - i was very surprised to find out its held aloft by quite a few as Civs greatest moment and its the pinnacle of TBS games
There's no colonizing multiple worlds here? That is kinda crappy. They could have put in an additional strategic overlay like from Star Wars - Empire at War to make it possible, that would work.

I would love to see some combination of CIV and Emperor of the Fading Suns. Loved that game (the promise of it), but it was beyond buggy.
I might pick up BE after a price drop but I'm just not a fan of the CIV style of combat. I would rather sink my money into Pandora DLCs or whatever they are working on, just as I prefer Xenonauts to the remade X-Coms. I wish those projects had the equivalent Firaxis budgets.

That's ONE HECK of a reference right there. Based on one of my favourite pen & paper RPGs ever, to top it off.

No worries - to be honest, I am not comfortable writing down fully your forum handle - DR :)
There's some hope on that. But I do see EFS and Fading Suns to be a rather obscure footnote in the history of both strategy and P&P role-playing games. Even less obscure stuff like Traveller (and the MegaTraveller RPGs, do you remember those?) haven't received much attention or a decent treatment - there's some elements of Traveller (and Starflight) in the Post-Virus setting in StarSector (formerly Starfarer), and there's also some dashes of the MegaTraveller gameplay in upcoming indie titles like The Mandate.

Don't recall Traveller, but how I loved Starflight! Good times finding a shield for my away rover and capturing a Brass Harpooner! I will keep my eyes on StarSector and The Mandate. Interesting times we live in: on one hand you have Oculus Rift and the transformations it promises, on the other, indie sandboxes. If only I had as much free time now as when I was a youngster!

Funny thing is that there are a few indie sandbox projects that are betting a lot on Oculus. We might - at some point in the future - be able to eat the proverbial cake and have it :)
That's one of the big ironies of adulthood, DR. Sometimes, you eventually get the $$$ to afford most of the entertainment your heart desires, but earning that $$$ leaves you with no time to enjoy those possibilities of entertainment. I'm looking forward to a comfortable retirement, fingers crossed that then when I have both the $$$ and the time, I will
also have the physical capability! Argh!

I owned two different versions of MegaTraveller, IIRC. A boxed one and a later softback.
The boxed version was awesome. Loved the starmap in that thing, it was nerdtastic.
Twilight:2000 was also a lesser known favorite. I picked up a later big revision in softback form, and I thought they had streamlined some stuff that was needed (1-to-1 bullet ratio, yay!) but it also changed some things that I liked since the original boxed version (tank penetration damage with a list of equipment/crew that are possibly hit depending on angle). The few gaming sessions I had running the original were quite enjoyable all around and most everyone got into the post-WW3-apoc setting very easily. I think someone still publishes a version but I don't really P&P RPG anymore (never did a whole lot anyway).
A Civ mod in the Firefly 'verse would be awesome. Say, pre-Firefly, leaving the "earth that was" and colonizing the star system they eventually settled in. Multiple planets and moons, lots of possibilities.
Reavers could be Barbarians!
EDIT:
Apparently, someone else already thought of this. :)

Yes, I played it a bit last night hence it was fresh in my memory :)
That's the thing with one-man projects, they don't really have deadlines :) And there's a huge single point of failure there: if the only person doing the development has a very demanding day job that only allows for "short bursts" of activity, or his or her life gets complicated for whatever reason, it can't be very fast.

Ah, that boxed version of MegaTraveller was awesome. I saw it in a local bookshop in Barcelona last June while visiting the family, and they were asking for it a King's ransom. I haven't been playing P&P for like 14 or 13 years... so that wouldn't have been a rational purchase, would it? I got a lot of the TLI reboot on e-book format back in the day, when I dreamt of one day doing a crossover with Star Control 2 mechanics in the Traveller universe. Didn't happen :)
Never got into Twilight 2000 - it is indeed a very suggesting setting. What I got into was its Space Opera follow-up, 2300AD and the later conversion into T20, 2320AD. Great setting, by the way. I have never seen any of the fresh themes and ideas there picked up on a computer game.
Back on track, I just read this over at CivFanatics:
QuoteIt was revealed on today's Reddit AMA with Beyond Earth co-lead designers Will Miller & Dave McDonough that there will be a turn-locked demo available to play on release day (October 24). Thus far there are no details as to how many turns you will be able to play, but one indicator might be the Civ5 demo, which allows users to play for 100 turns.
So it looks like you fence sitter can give the game a try before you buy. O0
It's also available for pre-loading as of now.

I would love to see Starflight revived. There are many awesome things about it, but probably my favorite is the fact that they programmed it in Forth. Hi, my name is Jerry and I'm a geek.
On the fence at the moment, but I imagine I will break down Friday and buy BE, because I have no willpower.

Right, because humanity so clearly learns from it's mistakes?
In a fictionalized account of human life and civilization-running that assumes we can make a trip to the nearest habitable world en masse...yes, one can assume a stretch such as humanity learning from mistakes. ;D
Though I doubt that very much as I'm sure each space-Civ can war with each other. A Civ game without war is an even less believable prospect, actually.

That's one of the things that always got me about the Civ games - the number of turns to gain tech. Bearing in mind quite a lot of the time there was nothing really to do (especially early game) except click the next turn button.

It will take shorter and shorter amounts of time as you build more research type buildings (whatever they are in this game).

Seismic Induction - 3rd level of Planetary Engineering which itself takes 827 turns.
Of course that is further down the "web" of the tech web and so won't be that long when you get to it (I don't think)...but still.
Civ V was similar - though I don't recall tech taking anything like that long. I was fedup when a tech took 80 turns!
Well like everyone says above a big part of ths series is waiting for cool stuff. It all hinges on how cool the end tech is.
Well Epic was EPIC enough in Civ V - this is taking it to a new level! ;D
UberEpic?
Seemingly

Agreed.
On the face of it, and given that 5 minute video I still stand behind the "Civ V" reskin. There are changes - but it just looks and seems to play like Civ V in space to me.
Though I should add it's kind of difficult to make a Civ game look like anything other than, well...a Civ game!

7.9 overall, but review seems kind of "meh" to me.
I read that review and I found a bit shallow - it actually says very little about the game systems and the game play. I found the Eurogamer review
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-10-23-sid-meiers-civilization-beyond-earth-review
with a similar score, being far more interesting to read. This bit in particular
Quote
These guys, along with scatterings of poisonous miasma, initially forced an immediate rethink of my entirely lazy Civ fallback strategy. No more setting expensive units to explore, as they merely autopilot their way into the mouth of something nasty. No more mindless city-spamming as a hedge against attack. Beyond Earth can be downright oppressive for your first few games, and that's to its credit. I found myself playing in a way I'd never played before, because the game was forcing me to be less stupid. Suddenly, I was staying small, building up defences, and seeing each new colony, each unmolested trade convoy, as a significant victory. I suspect that even if you're actually good at Civ you'll have to question your approach somewhat. Sit up. Lean in.
Retrain, in other words. Once you do, Beyond Earth makes more sense. You don't actually have to ceaselessly battle the environment, for starters. You can fall into step with it, investing in things that allow you to protect units from attack, remove miasma from tiles or use it to regain health.
kind of points out where the IGN reviewer "misses the point". The IGN review read as if the authors was expecting to find some blue-skin lookalikes of the Na'vi you can try to "civilize", while the design seems to be more that of pitting the player again the forces of nature in an alien setting. The Eurogamer review also makes the following remark
QuoteWeb and affinities drive the game's new victory conditions. Previous Civ science and culture victories have long been meatier than their names suggested, but Beyond Earth really reinforces a shift away from bland concepts towards immediately tangible goals: contacting alien intelligence, re-establishing a link with earth, or nurturing the lifeforce of the planet itself. Alongside domination and the timed victory, there are four of these end-games to aim for, generally requiring an interdisciplinary blend of culture and science, a cherry-picking of tech and specific wonders and a gimmick of some sort, like a planetary wonder that you have to protect. They add a lot in terms of drama and basic story structure.
which also seems to be at odds with the dismissive way the IGN reviewer wrote about victory conditions.
It also looks like that Firaxis this time gave altogether on trying to deliver yet another diplomatic AI and conserved what they had achieved by the last expansion of Civ V. That might be a bit of a game breaker for some, not so much for me, as I have always considered diplomatic AI in Civilization to be quite "mad".
I must say I am quite intrigued.
Just downloaded it. Let you guys know.

What tech takes 1072 turns?
Seismic Induction - 3rd level of Planetary Engineering which itself takes 827 turns.
Of course that is further down the "web" of the tech web and so won't be that long when you get to it (I don't think)...but still.
Civ V was similar - though I don't recall tech taking anything like that long. I was fedup when a tech took 80 turns!
Keep in mind, at the beginning of the game, turns cover 20+ years. By the end of the game is turn is what, 1 day. I know it seems long for a turn based game, but it makes some sense.
I've played a few hours already. Game's quite slow moving or maybe because I'm fiddling around aimlessly.
I find myself fighting against the Planet rather than other human factions. The miasma is annoying and those Siege Worms are crazy strong.
This is an interesting experience nonetheless.
I even got environmentalist factions criticizing my treatment of native lifeforms. Hope we don't go to war because of this.
By the way the tech research speeds up as your Civ develops.

Bring back the Nerve Staples!
:))
You can actually speed up research by killing aliens. Yeah, I'm driving those tree huggers nuts.
The aliens aren't so bad. The basic guys won't attack you unless you attack them or threaten their home.
The giant squids and siege worms attack anything on it's path.
But wait... the so-called aliens are the natives. It is the humans who are aliens. Right?
Aliens are harmless if you don't disturb their nests (at least the early ones are). You can start pushing back miasma almost immediately. One of the tech tree branches available from the first turn (Ecology, I think) allows you to build things like sonic fences and satellites that eliminate it.
I'm more concerned about the fact that I had 3 CTD's in my first 2 hours of play :(
What's a CTD?
All I gotta say is, when I get this game, if some faction mentions 'carbon footprint' or 'global warming,' they're gonna get nuked into the Stone Age.

I got 10 hours with no CTD. Finished a standard length campaign and I lost. Never really thought about the victory conditions and never really had the courage to wage war.
I don't think I ever got to the stage of using nukes in any Civ game...that's how hardcore I am :(
I used nukes in all my Civ games.
Though in Civ V, I met an AI that didn't hesitate to use them back on me. In Civ I-IV I could advance so far past the other Civs that I'd be in the nuclear age while they're still discovering railroads. That never ended well for them. >:D
Civ V, though, is much better in balancing that. I've not been able to blow away other Civs in V like I could in the other titles.
Nuking is all fun and games, kids, until someone does it back to you. :-\
Whether it turns out to be a classic game remains to be seen, but so far, it definitely has that typical Sid Meier "just one more turn" addictive quality. The thing I like about it is you really feel like you are guiding explorers in a completely foreign and alien world. You see resources and alien life and have no idea how they may be taken advantage of or how they may harm you. This must be sort of what the original explorers who found the New World felt like upon arriving on the shores. A very cool feeling.
That one reviewer saying how 'alien' the world felt and being unable to, at a glance, discern what is what, was a pretty cool revelation. Not in the way the reviewer stated it, because I think the dummy missed the point. It's a brand new world to figure out and will take time to sink in.
The gameplay vids are growing on me but I still gotta wait for a sale.
Why wait for a sale man? :P
Very, very cash poor right now. I'm waiting on a check from this current acting gig of mine so I can cash it and have enough money to have meals while out of town next week. Lots of crap all happening at once right now. :-\

Jarhead said it best. BE
feels like an alien world, far more so than Pandora achieved. I really feel like I'm exploring the unknown, not sure of what will bite or what won't. For example, in my first few turns I sent a soldier unit to a herd of...something...that was near my starting city. Turns out soldiers weren't needed as I was able to throw up a pen and domesticate them. "Goodie huts" require you to send in a team of explorers and dig for a few turns. I've only played up to around a hundred turns so far, but no issues, no problems....just fun. O0
Argh! Stuck at work, can't play until done. >:(

This sounds great for the first few games you play..... but will it still have that "exploring and alien world" feeling once you know what all the new fauna can do? Or do the make the fauna different every game....that would be cool!

Are the resource properties randomized in each playthrough so that you're not sure what stuff does at first, in order to get this gameplay?
Is there an echo in here...? ;)
Is this Alpha Centauri 2.0?

Are worlds randomized?
You can "rescan" and get new world choices. Could be randomized or could be a lot of different preset worlds, I'm not sure yet. Each choice falls into the familiar category of earth-like, pangea or island. There are also several preset worlds described as being more challenging, such as Kepler, a world with heavy geothermic activity and so on.
Nefaro, I haven't played enough to answer your question.
And Endfire, it certainly doesn't feel like Alpha Centauri to me, and I put in many, many hours there. Doesn't feel like Civ V either, which is what I was afraid of. Still too early for my own impressions to be much more than superficial, however, I'm definitely not disappointed so far.

Well I was really excited about this game when I first heard of it. Moments earlier however I watched a one hour let's play video and I'm thinking that when this game goes on sale for 1 dollah then I'll get it.
Too many games to play at the moment and unless I'm wowed to the point where I get my rocks off I'm not wasting time or money on boredom.
Anyone who has the game care to change my mind? (I'm not trying to sound belligerent, I'm just saying that I want to like this game enough to buy it but so far I'm just not feeling awesome about Civ in space.)

Yup because it's the same set of aliens and same set of ecosystem each and every game. The novelty will be lost after a few rounds.
^I hope a mod or DLC like that can be done.
I'm enjoying the game through my first few hours playing it. I almost watched some let's play videos, read some reviews and forum threads today, but then I realized that I'll I wanted to was to let the game stand on it's own merits with the only critic that matters to me - me. I think it's an approach I'll take for future purchases too. Selfish I know, but I'm really enjoying just playing the game.
I don't get the concern about a lack of replayability for a game that's been out of the box less than 24 hours. I know not everyone is a Civ fan, but in terms of history, sales and reputation, Civ is a consistent best seller....replayability being one of the primary reasons. This game is different enough from Civ to not be Civ in Space, but retains enough of the strong points of the franchise to make for a very replayable game, imho....especially when you know we can count on future DLC's introducing new and shiny toys, in typical Sid Meier fashion.
After all, in Civ, the ecosystem remains the same each game, but there are enough different approaches you can take to make Civ immensely replayable. Why would it be an issue here? I understand the viewpoint of keeping things "mysterious", and yeah, that will wear off with familiarity. But based on Civ history, I would assume that player-created mods and maps will start showing up sooner rather than later. That's one of my favorite parts of Civ V, and yet another reason why each new game is fresh.
I'm not taking potshots at anyone for their opinion, there are plenty of games others love that I don't care for. I just don't see lack of replayability as a valid criticism this early in the game.

Of course it's repayable. My point is that the feeling of
exploring a new world like the first run through will get stale because it's the same world over and over with just a different setup. Soon it will just be like the familiar Earth.
What if the game were to actually go beyond the normal procedurally generated factors of geography and resource distribution? I'm talking about seeing different creatures for different planets with different behaviours, different atmosphere and climate requiring different technologies and poses different challenges.
A counter-argument would be Humans would always choose a planet like this to colonize.
Well I think that can be said for most all games in terms of replayability if we are all objectively honest. I'm hard pressed to think of a game that offers factors beyond random geography, resource distribution, or faction (yours and others) starting location. I'm not disagreeing with your assertion that more features to randomize the alien world would increase variety in exploration and gameplay.
Right now we have a very good base game and don't know what DLC or expansion goodies they are developing for Beyond Earth if any.

It kills me to see everyone that always seems to enjoy these civ games......without fail, I end up buying them when they are cheap, give them a try, and really never get far with them. Wish I knew how to get maximum enjoyment out of them like everyone else seems to. I must not grasp it as well as others. I'll still likely end up buying this one when on sale again and repeat the same darn cycle:(

I'm the same Gus with some games.
I think like mikeck says - you just got to understand they aren't your bag.
But I do the same - buy them to see what the appeal is and then go "Oh...there is none"!
Personally I love the look and feel of the Civ games and the relative simplicity of them. From the intro's to the music score and right through the game.
So far I like it. It's different enough from CiV to be interesting to play. They need to do some work to tighten some aspects up though.
I played at Mercury (Normal) level which is the same I play my CiV games at.
I had a Quest that just sat in my quest log with no way on how to resolve it, just a broad statement and no check boxes or clues as to what it meant. Never did find out how to do it.
AI seems a bit less trigger happy. The diplomacy needs work as I was denounced by my neighbor but of relationship stayed Friendly.
Water aliens are a real bitch until you get quite far into the tech tree... err... web.
I like the tech web. I'll need a lot of play time to get to know where everything is.
The victory conditions are very different. I though I had won several times but there was always another thing to complete to get the victory. I won with only 5 cities.... might have to try harder levels.
I really like the Civ games because I get to play in history. I love history. I play most all my civ games on Earth maps, with true start location if I can, to see if I can re-create history, at least with my civ. I really don't care if I win, it's about the journey through history for me.
I think this is why Alpha Centauri never held me... there is no history to play with... we'll see if this one can hold my interest beyond a few games.
Barth: what 'true start location' are you using in Civ V? Every mod I've tried that touts that doesn't work right.
As for Beyond Earth...
I can't put my finger on exactly what makes it good.
As Barth said, the sea monster aliens are tough bastards, but NOTHING is like the Alien Kraken. It took me about 10 turns to bring one down and that's only because it hung out near my coastal city. I half expected it to attack it but it did not, which admittedly is mildly disappointing. I don't see an option for building naval ships though it's got to come sooner or later.
Aliens on land are relatively benign though the manual says they can go hostile if you get too close to their nests, or if they're getting slaughtered. Even if you treat them peacefully, the other players can wipe them out, so they'll treat you like the enemy too if that happens. Sometimes, you don't have much of a choice but to kill them. On this last game I tried yesterday there was a nest near my capital and it spawned endless buggers, so I couldn't send out colonists in that direction (pretty much everything west of my capital was swimming with cricket aliens). I built a bunch of military units and pretty much took the Supremacy tack by going all Colonial Marines on them. Then of course, their big brother flying insects appeared, which are tough hombres...but eventually I brought the swarms under control and eliminated the nest. Of course, my hippy neighbors took umbrage to that; two of them told me repeatedly they did not like the way I was treating the indigenous species. Eventually three of them denounced me, then one declared war (the African Union or whatever they are - I can't recall whom I'm playing offhand).
That war didn't go well for either of us...I wiped out his invading forces but then he wiped mine out...our closest two cities only had a one-hex-wide access path, with mountains to one side and a canyon to the other, and he had tons of rough terrain around his town. I ended up stopping the game at that point.

...
This is my favourite - Yet (not) Another Earth Maps Pack. Makes HUGE earth map with 22 civ's in starting locations and city states in start locals as well. Defaults to marathon speed... which you need if you're ever gonna see the whole map
Thanks...might give one a try later.

I don't much like that I've not had one opportunity to build Wonders. I see my AI opponents knocking them off left and right but these structures never appear in my city build windows.

You can see Wonders in the tech menu, Banzai. I just built my first. Once you have the tech, the option to build the wonder appears on your build menu.
Thanks...finally saw 'em but the icons didn't make them stand out. I eased off on the difficulty so I could grab a few to see what it's like. Now I know and knowing is...yadda yadda.
I put in about 12 hours so far. First game was...meh. Nothing really happened. AI left me alone to just build. I contribute that to having 6 players on an 8 player map. Will give it a another shot
^ Play on a 'Small' map with six players and you won't have that kind of luxury.
A 'Standard' 8-player map is much larger with a lot more breathing room.
My game so far as the Slavic...
Cornered the PAC from the start so they can't develop.
Friends with Africans, Brazilians, Indians, Polystralia constantly maintain alliance.
Friends go to war against Europeans and I help wipe them out.
I also wipe out the Asians.
Africa and India became guarded after my conquest of last European city.
Africa is one objective away from victory so I eliminate them. That's nasty but it has to be done.
I am one objective away from victory but find out I have the wrong affinity. So have to do the others from scratch.
ARC, never been friends and they are huge. They are also working towards victory so I need to slow them down. They have better combat units in some aspects so it will be tough. Planning to attack their capital head-on and burn it to the ground since they have the capability to recapture it.
My health is -80! I have a lot of client cities. Don't think I can effectively bring that down with my expansionist policy. Maybe it's a balancing factor to prevent large empires developing too fast. That means smaller factions can still win if they are in good health with efficient research an production of wonders.
I didn't like Civ III or IV much, but I really liked Civ II and Civ V. Diff'rent strokes.
I think I've got a plan to handle health issues, so I've started a new game to test out my theory. Right now I'm 109 turns into the game and I've got my health at +12. I am 3 turns out from producing my 1st settler, which I'm looking to plant right in the middle of several late game required resources. This game punishes rapid expansion due to the increasing penalties for your civ's out of control health penalties. I think the factors that cause health penalties might need to be looked at to be toned down a hair or two.
It's hard to control. The growth of population outpaces the health giving buildings and tech. You need to expand to be able to build more health buildings because a city can have just a few. But I have learned to face it and my -80 health is not really doing much to stop me from dominating the world. It's just slowing me down.
So something fell out of the sky and destroyed several hexes in my territory. Doesn't seem to be a weapon. Is this a meteor? Fallen satellite?
Well the prosperity cultural line gives some good health bonuses to the point that it's almost a necessary line of development. I've also found that the harmony line also has health benefits.
I have not seen anything like that yet. I have had the artifact sites turn into resources, which in my game is going to lead to the first war. The Corporation and I started out right on top of each other so I can see a border dispute ramping up in the near future. Also the French-Spain culture is spamming a bunch of little city around my mega city eating up a bunch of nearby resources. I'll be going to war with them too!
Annexing and creating puppets give big health penalties.
In first run through I was able to keep them green and it was a lot of research without focus and I lost. Now I am more goal driven with focused research, I have forgone health research especially in the beginning. I am now capturing my way to victory but that no good for health. What I like is that you can't have it all in this game. Need to think things through.
I've cannot remember playing a game of CIV where I wasn't hell bent on spamming settlers to claim resources in the early game. That is not the case here. Mostly because I'm trying to keep my health positive. I know that the last game I was getting iirc 10% negative bonuses to everything science, production, food, etc...at the -20 health marker. Maybe that just isn't as big of an issue it you have many cities producing for your civ. That'll be the experiment in the next game. This one I'm fight off a freaking alien horde surrounding the hex I want to settle. I'm HARMONY you little bug bastards!
100 turns into my first 'real" game and I'm digging it a lot.
I think where the game really shines is in the "interesting decisions", whether is practicality vs. Affinity progress in the research bush and quest decisions, or whether to go wide vs. deep in the Virtue tree. It seems as though I have to agonize over them more than in any 4X game I can recall. I don't have the issue some do with having to reset trade routes, since needs change and the number of routes per city is pretty limited.
Oh, and I found that turning off AA fixed the black screen/crashing issue I was having.
People are having an issue with resetting trade routes? I actually like that I have the opportunity to reconsider every 20 turns or so.
I do feel that the UI is one of the least intuitive of all of the CIV series of games. I know that the information screens aren't hidden, but it did take me awhile to find some of the information I wanted too. Perhaps I could have read the manual, but who the hell reads a CIV manual? The one traditional CIV screen that I cannot find is the Advisor screen. Is it gone?
I really enjoy that there are quest lines and that they have far-reaching consequences.
I was told in my last game that a group of slaves escaped from an outpost (one of those one-hex indy cities) and begged me to free their brothers and sisters, so I attacked and destroyed the outpost. Later I got an update and another quest choice (can't recall what it was offhand).
Health was a big issue in my first game but I expanded to four cities and just balanced it by building health structures whenever possible. Also chose that option in game setup and whenever a benefit appears that gives you a choice between two options and one is health related, I grab it. So far I've managed to keep my health in the 9-12 range.
I've got my CIV's health under control and am getting ready to create another settler for my 3erd city. I'm finding the exploration, expansion and exploitation of this game to be significantly slower, which I like. I haven't even fought a battle against another civ yet. Frankly I'm hesitant to initiate a war, because I feel so underpowered militarily. Good stuffs.
The Africans declared war on me, which surprised the hell out of me. But I did get denounced by three powers just before that happened (including by them). They were pissed that I was killing aliens, but I didn't have a choice as their damn nest was right next to my territory and I wanted to drop a city in the area. Aliens might not attack your military or explorer units, but they DO attack Settler units if left undefended.
Those little alien bastards are always attacking my explorers.
I think there's an Affinity (Purity, I think) that, at Level 1, makes your Explorers immune to attacks.
Though honestly I haven't had an issue with them attacking. I had an Explorer next to three Aliens in this current game of mine and they ignored him.

Resetting trade routes is good because I can adjust to a more profitable destination. Trade between factions also helps in relations.
My first game ended with out any war. Going by the back story, it seems that humans are hesitant to go to war and ravage the environment. Thats why most diplomatic reactions would be just forgiving transgressions. But I found the need to go to war to be competitive especially if I want to prevent other factions from achieving victory.
But war has costs, it makes you the bad boy, you produce units instead of researching your victory conditions, cities you conquer have really heavy health penalties.
I'm "harmony" and I still kick alien ass when they are in my territory. I'm sure I'll regret it at some point though. I hate bugs.

Makes sense to me.
I'm harmony too. I kill those aliens that doesn't want to harmonize with me. I like the harmony army. In the late techs, I have knights riding those bugs. They go really fast. I am also now immune to miasma.

It's funny you say that, because I was thinking the EXACT same thing, that other factions would be hesitant to start shit. But they sure did in that one game. They also like to make veiled threats like they do in the other Civ games, like telling you that you're settling too close to them or are claiming resources in "their territory," which is apparently very loosely interpreted just like in other iterations.
I'm not much intrigued by Harmony - too hippy and tree-hugging for me. Though some of the techs are appealing.

Those threats are somehow tracked by the game. After some time, it will know whether you kept your promise or not. A message will pop out if you keep your promise and relations will improve.

Almost won my game (as harmony) but found out the last objective needs 12 or 14 purity!!!! Oh well back to square 1.

I had an issue with them eating my caravans. Then I got a quest option to use some of the same material I was using to make anti-bug fences on the caravan, and it was no longer a problem.
I never even think about another outpost unless health is at least +4. Hasn't been a problem so far.
I'm pretty sure the Corporation and I are going to war within the next 10 turns or so. We are both massing armies on our shared border. I'm not sure, but if we do go to war I have a feeling the Australian or whatever they are are going to up into the mix against me too.

For some reason, workers in auto-develop do not build roads. And I've never seen the AI do roads as well.
Anybody know how to complete the Culture Burden Quest? When I get the quest there are no associated tasks to complete....?
I have come to the conclusion that Sid Meyer's Beyond Earth is nothing more than a big mod for Civilization V.
I had a chance to interview Sid Meier last year (very nice guy). I thought his most interesting comment was about nukes in Civ, and the difference between players and AI. http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2014/04/11/you_must_first_invent_the_universe_sid_meier_interview_civilization

Well I initially thought it was a new skin for Civ V and after playing the demo there is no doubt it's still Civilisation - and very close to V. However, I think there are plenty of changes in there to call it Civ V Redux. Worth full price? From the demo, I had enough of a
sense of change to warrant a yes.
I'm just not sure what else they could've done to change it though...Civ is Civ is Civ. They've all had their "upgrades" and all charged full price on release for "the new iteration". There's no doubt you're playing a Civ game here and you could indeed as I did argue it's a reskin - but there are a lot of changes to make it Civ Space.
I expect modders could've given something very close (hence the reskin thought)
imo

It's like Civ4 Colonization was. Not just a mod but a new game based on a slightly modified existing game engine. Nothing wrong with that except the price shouldn't have been for a new game. $29.99 would have been a fair price.
Man I thought I was having a solid play through until I looked at the diplomacy screen. Points wise I'm in last freaking place and more than 150 points behind the leader. Igore the rankings. It won't count when a civ achieves a one of those thematic victories.
It is just a gauge on their power. Of course those higher up can actually do research and build the victory wonders faster. But a mid tier faction can still pull off a sneaky win.
This is what makes the game quite different from Civ V.
Speaking of sneaky, I'm just now learning the ropes of the espionage system, and I'm hoping I can use that to pull out a victory.
No sneaking around for me.

Nowadays I don't remember a damn thing about it other than they were looking for... water.
As you can see in my screenshot, my health was a big negative but no worries I can earn almost 500 power (money) each turn.
I generally go for non-military victory conditions, which is why I'm trying to follow the tree-hugger Affinity
I'm seriously considering just quitting my current game and restarting due to the fact that I've been overly concerned about health, and my growth is very slow (200 turns in and I have all of 3 cities).
I may even wait for the first patch.

I was going for the Transcendence victory. Almost done with the Flower Dome but when I captured a faction's capital, it was apparently the last one and I was awarded the victory. You apparently don't need to eliminate them, just capture their original capitals, not even their new capitals when they lose the original.

Ha, that's great!
OK. In one turn this just went from "good but flawed" to shelved. At normally difficulty I was neck-and-neck with the Pan-Asian faction heading into the end game, although neither of us was approaching completing any of the victory conditions. We probably had 8 or 9 trade routes going between our cities, an alliance, a cooperation agreement, and open borders (I was more than happy to let their military do their bug-killing from my cities).
Then - without warning and for no reason - they declared war. There wasn't even a downgrade in relations first.
That sort of stuff is enough to get me to uninstall.

Civ's pulled that kind of sh!t in every iteration. I think they at least would degrade relations and you'd be able to see it coming.
In Beyond Earth, I've been backstabbed several times by the AI, but I've been appropriately programmed by the AI's shenanigans that I expected it and prepared accordingly.
Perhaps we should schedule an MP game? Anyone up for that?
MP would be fun! I'm out this weekend though....

But if a human player did that to you it would be good tactics (sneaky but good)
Not really. I'm nowhere close to completing a victory condition, and the AI loses all the benefits of trade, the ability to hunt bugs without putting any if it's cities in danger, and an ally should one of the other factions attack.
There is no reason for this, other than my having the higher score. I get just as pissed when something like this happens with the Total War AI.
Surely it's removing it' closest competitor....... if he wins the war he wins the game
That's the way I read it to. I just try to be prepared for this shit.... doesn't always work out though.... :knuppel2:
I'm pretty sure in all my Civ games (as far as I've taken them) I declare war for no reason...and sometimes on allies.
Just sayin' - I'm not sure it's a flaw. Sid's a gamer too...he probably knows all of us pull that shit from time to time O:-)
So for you guys that own and play both which one do you find to be better, beyond earth or Pandora? I feel like "on paper" I should like Pandora better seems to be a little deeper but I just don't and I'm not sure why. I wish there was more to beyond off you add a little more complexity like Pandora has but I just can't wrap my head around why I don't like Pandora
Ah, the classic Civilization divide. Those who want the AI to try to beat the human any it can vs those who want a more diplomatically realistic AI. ::)
I prefer the diplomatically realist approach. Sounds like BE is working just like Civ5 though.
Try the demo mike. It's 100 turns long and should give you a good feel for the game.
I've already bought and am currently playing. It does have issues but I'm having fun so far. :)

I had a very positive experience from the demo. I think it could've/should've been longer...but there was enough there to tell me it was different enough to warrant the cash.
I haven't yet...but I still might

I own and have played them both. Just trying to get a feel for whether people on this forum find one clearly better
I don't know if it's possible in BE, but, every iteration I have played previously, you can bribe another nation to go to war with anyone else on the board. And just like everyone else on here, I, too, suspect that the AI declares, and usually at the WORST possible moment, just to piss you off.
30% off on Steam
^I saw that today. Angry Joe's take on the game convinced me to pass on this though. I'm thinking of getting GalCiv III since it too is on sale in Steam. :)

You just missed galciv on sale for $22, ended yesterday at stardock:(
Oh no. At $22 I would have pulled the trigger. Steams price at $39.99 while definitely tempting is not enough to push me over the edge, especially since turn based combat doesn't seem to be a feature of the game.

And probably never will be, sadly.
I'm hoping a mod will come along and make this game a lot more fun. Like Age of Discovery or TAC did for Colonization IV.
A big patch was released today.

100 turns sounds like a lot, but it actually wasn't. Was it enough to see the game mechanics? Barely. But - it did leave me with the impression that I would want this one.
So I'm just waiting on a sale.

I did like Civ 5 and from the 100 turn demo I get the impression that this game is Civ 5 in space. I'm waiting for a sale as well before picking this one up. I'm thinking under $10 and we have a sale. The game just appears to be too much like Civ 5 only with different skins and names in the civilopedia. I could be wrong but that's what I perceive the game to be.
Beyond Earth is to Civ V what Colonization was to Civ IV. Same look but different play style required to win.

Exactly. They are squeezing a little more life out of the Civ5 engine. Hopefully now they will start on a brand new Civilization VI. :)

Probably accurate. I like Civ 5 in space though so I dig it. Certainly nothing revolutionary and it is everything you would think it would be...nothing more or less.
Just saw this article (http://www.polygon.com/2015/3/12/8198201/civilization-beyond-earth-patch-creators-fixing-mistakes-gdc-2015) link posted at Civfanatics. I hope to see "2.0" soon!
They should have designed Beyond Earth to be SMAC 2 in the first place, not a continuation of CiV but set in space. From the article:
QuoteA Miller explained, they knew it would be compared directly to its predecessor, a reality both understandable and somewhat unfair. They were making a Civ game, but it was an oddball. Their approach during development tried to walk the line between the familiar and the new. So when creating new systems and designing others around well-established Civilization concepts, they relied heavily on their quality assurance team and some dedicated fans who got early code. They tested it. The developers made changes. It seemed like a good idea at the time.
Then why did you just make a recycled CiV when we really wanted a recycled SMAC?
The article doesn't really go into much detail on just what exactly they have planned for 2.0. Guess we just wait and see...
Bring back stacking and I might start buying Civ games again. Until then, Civ 4 is still the cream of the crop for me. And a fine game it is, with some of the great mods.

Ha! Stacking is one of the main reasons I can't go back to Civ IV after playing CiV. I love the single unit per hex and the fact that it is hexes not squares.
The mods for CiV are just amazing.
Good thing there lots of games so everyone can find their fun.
I'm with solops on stacking. The fact that V doesn't do it is the main reason I don't play V. However, Warlock is single unit hexes and I have over 500 hours on that. Go figure.
Going from IV's massive stacks to V's single units took a lot to wrap my mind around. But now that I'm in 500+ hours with Civ V, I can't imagine having stackable units, now.
I'm not trying to be a smart -arse but what is the big deal with unit stacking? Why would eliminating the ability to put more than one unit in a hex prevent you from playing the game?

Agreed. The mega-stack in the old Civ games became unbeatable. While Civ IV was awesome, I find I enjoy V even more.
Any good deals out for Beyond Earth? I've lost track of the link to that game price comparison website which shows real time prices.
^Not seeing any good deals at the moment. Your best bet is probably Greenmangaming with a 20% off voucher (20OFFM-ATTHEW-HATTON) to knock it down to ~$40.

No, you're not being a smartarse. Legitimate question.
I meant I like the one-unit-per-space rule so much in Civ V, that I couldn't go back to IV. Just a personal preference, now.

No stack of doom.
I prefer the one hex/one unit. I guess my question was directed to those who WONT play Civ 5 or beyond earth simply because there ISNT unit stacking. What is so great about stacking that a prohibition would ruin the game?
The only stacking rule I could live with in V would be, being able to stack multiple workers in a hex to build an improvement more quickly. That's something from IV that I do miss.

One unit per hex allows the unit to be destroyed and leave an empty space. Any attacks need to be made on a broad front rather than a single hex. One unit per hex means ten v. ten battles take up twenty hexes, stack v. stack takes up two. One unit per hex means planning your approach with less ability to adjust frontage.
I've played Warlock over 500 hours. That is a single unit per hex game. So, the prohibition against stacking is not something that I have a problem with as a rule. It's the problem I have with Civ V. The previous four iterations allowed stacks. That's how I am used to playing Civ. It's how I like to play Civ. Stacks of doom and all. So, no V for me.
Ok, makes sense.
