Title: Welcome to Snowpocalypse 2015-16, y'all!
Post by: JasonPratt on November 19, 2015, 12:06:08 PM
With all the horrifying and/or sad news in the world right now, let's take some time to remember that you could also be buried in snow and ice, like many of us in North America last year. As Canadian and American Thanksgivings approach, be thankful!

...what's that? The season's first nationwide snow is marching around right now?

So. Let it begin. Again.  >:D

(Out of curiosity, did the Boston piles from last Snowpocalypse finally melt? There were doubts in late summer if they'd get there before, well, here.)

Well, we ended up with a bunch of slush over which two inches of snow accumulated. If this had been a couple of weeks from now there'd be some serious snowfall on the ground.

As it is I believe we've managed to donate the majority of this storm to America's Hat, so they have one more thing to be thankful for next week...on the proper day of the holiday.

The worst weather is ice. I have been seriously injured just trying to walk the frickin' dog on an icy hill. Never mind driving in it. November here in the woods can be really icy. Not this year though.

We have a couple of inches of slushy re-frozen stuff pretending to be snow too. Clearly time to uncrate the emergency liquor and bunker down for the season.

New neighbors are from California and their kids have never seen snow, which was cute. The dad was out diligently shoveling the small amount of slush from the driveway and walks, which of course no one else in the neighborhood was doing. Hell, it'll be 50 on Tuesday.

He looked so pleased with himself. I don't think he got that I was grinning not because of his kids and their first snowfall, but because I was imagining the look on his face the first time he needs to clear a foot of snow off of his driveway.

Great, now we'll have to the whining out of NYC and DC about all of the snow.  Meanwhile, parts of Michigan got 19" yesterday, it closed I-75 for three hours, and probably not a word on the national news about.  But hey, it's all about NYC and they're being inconvenienced and the city/state not working fast enough to resolve it.  .

Well in all fairness, Michigan isn't the northeast.  I mean, you guys get 19" on a routine basis.

DC is paralyzed with even an inch of snow.  So, it's kinda a big deal, relatively speaking.

I would rather be in Indiana or Michigan or South Dakota where I used to live with 19" of snow than Virginia or NYC with 19" of snow. Places where it snows that much regularly know how to handle it, they have some place to put it when they clear it, and they have a sufficient budget for chemicals, salt (and in the case of SD, sand) to treat it.

Where the heck are you going to pile 19" of snow when you try and plow it in NYC or DC or Boston? Particularly if like last winter, it happens more than once? The impact on a large urban area or a place like Virginia where it doesn't snow like that regularly is all out of proportion to how we in the Midwest are impacted. Not to mention that those cities are travel hubs that are far busier than anyplace in the Midwest other than Chicago, so a lot of non-residents get impacted.

As far as I'm concerned though, 19" of snow anywhere is a PITA and I'd just as soon not deal with it.

I used to have to commute from Chesapeake Beach, MD to DC everyday for work.  On a good day it was about 50 minutes.  I remember once we got an inch of snow and I sat in traffic for 3 hours on the Anacostia Parkway trying to get into DC.  After 3 hours I wasn't even halfway and, at that point, I turned around as soon as able and called in to let them know I would be out that day.

Snow sucks.  DC sucks.  And DC with snow is suck2.

My issue isn't with the areas having to deal with the snow, it's the national news outlets acting like they've never gotten snow before.

As for the news outlets, my strategy is simple: I stopped paying attention to all of them a few years ago!  >:D

As for the news outlets, my strategy is simple: I stopped paying attention to all of them a few years ago!  >:D

Here here!  That's how I do it, too.

Working for a TV news channel was once what I 'wanted to do when I grew up.' When I was a teen I'd religiously absorb the news...of course back then (back in MY day), they only had the news on three times a day. My closest brush was when I was 18 and I applied to work at a local news channel, and they actually called me in for an interview. Didn't get the job...they told me I'd have to be in at 4 am and I expressed concern since I was going to school (to learn R-T-F)...that's probably what shot me in the foot. I imagine he had about 100 similar kids to go through and any minor sign would be enough to put me into the 'thanks but no thanks' pile. Oh well.

I'm sure there's idiocy out there that thinks the news is legitimate and honest, but still, it's fascinating to me that so many people I talk to express disdain and even outright hatred for the news. It seems the majority of people despise it, and yet, the news and their puppeteers advertisers keep on truckin', totally oblivious to how most of the public views them. That can't be the case, but it's how I see it.

It's simple- profit-based News is the New Entertainment. If the producers hokey it up and lots of people watch it then there's nothing broken in the business model.

Sad, but there it is.

Panzer, I used to live in SD also.  I live in a rural area of NW Ohio now.  They know how to deal with the snow, but they don't have the budgets to lay salt everywhere.

My issue isn't with the areas having to deal with the snow, it's the national news outlets acting like they've never gotten snow before.

I'm at about 20 miles SW of Fostoria.  I lived at Ellsworth AFB, SD for 3 years.

So far, the prediction is for the storm to stay far enough south that we'll only see snow showers. I'm not buying it though.

In north middle West TN picked up about half an inch of bumpy clear ice. (Or maybe a quarter inch with bumps, makes it seem thicker.)

Theoretically, tomorrow will be rain most of the day, shifting to a snow dump on Friday, but if the various pressure systems move a little higher or lower that could change to all rain (although no one expects Friday to be anything but snow so far) or to frozen slush all Thursday and then snow.

Weather Underground is saying about 3-5 inches over here. Just enough to look nice and still be easy to shovel.

Hopefully it doesn't turn to sleet before sundown or there will be a hard ice crust below all that fluffy overnight snow.

I thought our Swissy was retarded for the first 8 months.  He was afraid of grass.  After two years he is just like the breed description, loving, great with kids, excellent guard dog and prodigious passer of the smelliest gas on the planet.  I kid you not he dropped a major deuce in the house (another trait of Swissys is their amazingly large poo) and it actually set off the fire alarm.  I mean how is that even possible.

He will eventually love the cold.  Our guy breaks the ice in ponds in the winter to lay down in the frigid water.  They have a double fur coat that sheds water and keeps them super warm.  He will share that fur coat with you later on when he blows it out during spring.  Then you will have the enjoyable experience of giant drifting billows of downy Swissy fur tumbleweeding their way through the house and landing mostly in your food.

But he is the best dog ever!

Good to see that none of the snow is allowed to cross the border.....  :P

The really scary snow up there won't let our weak snow in.

I'm pretty sure we got about the minimum realistic expectation possible down here in upper middle West TN. It's all over but the microsleeting. Two inches (average, my guess) on some ice.

Y'all can have the rest of it, right?

There has been a dusting in Atlanta.   Maybe a quarter of an inch.

It's chaos out there right now.  The acrid smell of smoke fills my nostrils from the few dwellings that were unwise and did not fortify themselves.

I can catch the tinge of burning flesh in that smoke.  Clearly a meal for the ravagers that have come up from the city.

Tonight I stand silent vigil.  I have my trusty rifle at my side, and the barbed wire and traps I set will likely be tested again and again.

If I make it until morning I will try to armor my car and venture forth into the wastes to see what remains of civilization.  If there's enough, I might try to make a fresh start from the ashes.

Wish us luck, but I fear all is lost.

we had about an inch of ice on everything yesterday.  We've got some very crusty, crunchy now over top of it now, so it's going to suck for snowball fights and show angels, but it might work out for sleeping OK.

I'm just hoping that the temp here stays below 31F so the snow doesn't partially melt to form an ice shell below what falls after sundown.

Just before the snow started getting heavier I went out and filled the bird feeders so I wouldn't have to do it later or tomorrow morning. Well, I just checked out back and a huge flock of Grackles had come from gods-know-where and pounced on the full feeders. They were just about empty by the time I shooed away the marauders. Now the flock is sitting in the trees watching as the cardinals and finches and whatnot I was trying to feed are sadly pecking away at empty feeders.

5 min later- A huge explosion of black feathers as a hawk perches on a tree near my house. Those pesky Grackles were outta the neighborhood faster than a bunch of juvies scattering from a broken store window when a cop car roles by!

We only have about 4-5 inches but boy are the roads slippery. Had to drive down to the in laws about a mile away and was sliding all over the place in the one remaining Subaru. Once I got there (in laws are wintering in Hawaii) I decided I was not in the mood for the noise of the snow thrower and used the shovel to clear their driveway instead. I am a dummy.

Retire or expire. Both will have the same effect on my attitude about snow. All I know now is I am enjoying my location in the Great Plains. I do know a lot of folks back east, though.

I used the shovel because the blower is really noisy and after being in the house with the family the whole day, I just wanted some peace.

Steve, what in the world is that snow to the right in the second pic drifted on? That's a bizarre looking snowdrift.

Previous owners planted Holly bushes of some kind in front of our house.  The snapshot was taken from our dining room window.  I gave them a nice trim in mid/late November so the snow had a "smooth" rounded surface to accumulate on.  Never saw snow lay on them quite like that before.  My wife kept comparing them to the Dracula butt hair :))

With all the blowing snow, not really sure how much snow we ended up with, but I'm guessing it was well over 24".

Just got in from clearing our driveway and some neighbors.  We live on a cul-de-sac and have great neighbors.  We all get out and help each other get driveways passable, especially making sure our older neighbors can get out.   Heres hoping the county/state doesn't come back and screw up our hard work  >:(

Surf was thumping out here today.  No surprise, and the word was out so it was actually pretty crowded if you can believe that.  I found a little peak down the beach a way and worked it by myself; not the best spot on the beach but I don't like being around other people.

The first 30 minutes were kind of chilly, but once I got the blood moving it wasn't too bad.  It was 28 when I paddled out but once the wind backed off it wasn't bad at all.  About 36 when I came in, so it warmed up quite a bit.

We had snow in Norfolk once that was actually pretty heavy, but I think my daughter was only about 2-3.  My son spent his first 3 years in Iceland, so he's seen a bit of snow, plus Norfolk.  But neither of my kids has spent a lot of time in a snowy place since either was very little.

I didn't see snow until I was in 8th grade, so I can kind of relate.   ::)

In accordance with the prophecy, it microsleeted most of Friday on top of maybe 2ish inches. Put a nice glaze on things, took down a fluffy conifer in our back yard, but otherwise the streets were passable by Saturday before noon. (I can drive on ice and snow without much trouble anyway, but I don't intentionally drive far if I can help it. No need to dare chance to do its worst if I don't have to.)

Down 45 minutes south to visit the nieces for the weekend, where they had started building a 6 story tall snow fort and then got bored and went to go play something else. But they had a nice set of five small bricks in a genuine curve! "It must take five weeks to build an igloo!" one judged.

So we played cards and computer games and caught them mostly up on Star Wars movies. Which they have managed to watch rather out of order. (4, 7, 1, 2, 5. Bro and I both agree they should skip Ep 3 until they're a bit older, but they enjoyed my five minute summary re-enactment.) Ate dinner at IHOP last night. Felt weird to get back to snow this afternoon. A lot still on the ground at sundown -- and we didn't get a lot to start with (but, as noted, with ice reinforcement.)

Now I'm about to sleep like the dead at 8:30pm, because little nieces drink life-energy like chocolate milk, and I'm still not recovered yet.

Toonces I thought you grew up in NJ...

My dad was in the Marines, so we did a rotation between Beaufort, SC, Pensacola, and Yuma, AZ a couple of times.  When my dad got out, we moved from Yuma to NJ when I was just starting 8th grade, and that's where I did high school and college.  So, altogether I had about 10 years in NJ before I joined the Navy and went back to Pensacola, and I so I got exposed to the northeast a bit.

In about 1992, when I was in college, I helped a couple of my friends get a job at the place where I worked.  They decided to bail for spring break, and because I felt loyalty to the company, I stayed so the company wouldn't be completely boned when those guys left (I think they just up and quit the job, assholes).  So while they were gone, I decided to take the money I would have spent, went down to Sea Isle City over the weekend, bought a wetsuit and surfboard, and started my path to surfing- something I always wanted to learn how to do.  This was February in NJ.  So, from the first I've been dealing with shitty waves and cold water.

This whole thing didn't start in Hawaii, although it might seem like that sometimes.

Staggerwing, how's the back & leg doing?  Did you take any break(s) at all while you were shoveling?

Brant's and Toonces' daughters are adorable when they're playing in the snow.  (Actually, I suspect they're adorable when they're *not* playing in the snow too, but that's neither here nor there.)

QuoteHow much snow fell on Washington D.C. during this past weekend's massive snowstorm? Officially, 17.8 inches. But the actual answer may never be known.

The Washington Post reports that the snow-measuring device used by a team of weather observers at Washington's Reagan National Airport was buried in the blizzard, leaving them with no way to record the true amount of snow for hours on end.

The error promped the National Weather Service (NWS) to announce that it will be looking into the procedures used at Reagan National, where the official snow totals for the nation's capital are recorded.

I really liked the G.I. Joe toy line and eventually the comic book. But when I saw Torpedo in full SCUBA gear, including flippers, helping the Joes repel a COBRA attack on Washington, D.C. (y'know, running around on concrete and such, nowhere near a bathroom sink let alone a significant body of water), I was pretty much done with it.

Don't get me started on the retarded cartoons. They make the Squidbillies look like citified Mainers.

EDIT: Yeah, here it is.  ::)

I mean, WTF. I thought they taught Navy SEALs better than this.

The death toll in the comic was actually quite significant, including some named characters, even from early issues. This eventually included the original Cobra Commander himself.

Temps actually made it to the big 50 here today, snow is retreating, at least in the grassy areas.  Plows seem to be very active east of us, not so much in my area.  Neighbors and I were lucky yesterday to catch the attention of an enterprising tractor owner/driver coming through the neighborhood.  Got him to clear some driveways and some of the cul-de-sac/road for some "donations"....$$ well spent.

One possible tornado the next county southwest of us, but otherwise just a rainy night. The tornados stuck to Mississippi and Alabama. At one point I saw seven in MS at the same time on radar.  :buck2:

The same low pressure churned out snow all day and night on North, West, and NW Kansas. I heard Iowa got a lot dumped on it just after the Caucus ended, too.

Monday and Tuesday will be our turn, according to the weatherbunnies this morning.

We're getting a helluva little snowstorm right now. Yesterday it was forecast as 'snow showers'. It's been snowing like a bastard for a few hours now and we must have 5-6 inches on the ground already.

Heh.

I'm always amused by when I have no idea significant weather is moving in despite being a weatherman.  I suppose I'm more of a "surf weatherman" LOL.

My wife took some nice pictures in and around our house today (Rhode Island area)...

Mansion de Toonces:  (https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi263.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fii123%2Ftoonces3%2F12631522_10208605802601979_4147701337339108773_n_zps0nogzlsy.jpg&hash=ce67a72fc2622a03cda080edbda7ad7772b2732c)

Jamestown Bridge.  So this is about 200 yards down from my house, but it cool because we saw the weather shift from total shit to sunset and my wife pulled on all her snow gear and whatnot to go get the picture.  Awesome shot not easily arrived at.

Well... it's not often that we up here in the Frozen North give into winter but we we're told to leave work today. My normal 15 minute drive took about 40 minutes and my residential street already has a foot of snow on it. Weather dudes say it's falling at a rate of about 2 inches per hour.... sure seems more than that.... and it supposed to continue until after 5 pm today.

Looking at the radar images over Ottawa shows that the system has not really moved in the last several hours.... just sorta parked over us.....  :P

Oh and it might change to freezing rain later on.....  :D

80 Degrees here in Fla. all week and two feet of sunshine. And we're about to be over run by hordes of horny college girls in string bikinis. Wish I was young again. 8)

If they leave any extras please help them escape before Star notices.

Yeah but it's the 2 ft of snow followed by inches of rain 2 days later followed by more snow and then warm weather then frickin cold then ore snow rinse and repeat...
It's better if it just snows until spring.... our roads look like WWI no mans land the freeze thaw cycles have done so much damage to them.

Weren't you the one that got upset that I would pick Australia over Canada to escape to from the Marxist States of America?  Looks like my case is made :)

Woke up yesterday with about an 1" on the ground.  It just about all melted, but it has snowed off and on all day yesterday.  There were areas up around Toledo that have over 10".  Mother Nature just doesn't want winter to end this year.

That's me.  We have about 6"-7" on the ground East of Toledo.  Kid's soccer games are supposed to start this week.  I predict a delay.

I'm at work and it's been snowing-all-night-long. Not a huge amount on the roads, but they are snow covered. Starting to get sweaty palms just thinking about the 24 Km drive home as I've already put the summer wheels on the car...and they are not all seasons by any stretch of the imagination. RWD sports car to boot. Wish me luck.

Mother nature's being a real bag this year  :crazy2:

Be careful Rekim, I just took a cab to the airport and the roads are not great. Snow covered and slick. Good thing it's supposed to rain all day...  :crazy2:

Well, I made it home in one piece Barthheart. I couldn't get up the driveway, but no biggie there. Glad to see it had mostly melted by time I got up this afternoon. That had better be the end of the white stuff for a while....

Don't you get banned from Canada sent back to the old country for statements like that.

You guys up north better get this cleared-up pretty quick. The birds here in Fla. are getting tired of waiting to fly north for the summer. And the Snowbirds, are starting to come back. :o
