Got a text yesterday from Fandango saying tix are on sale for Rogue One.
I guess I get the pre-buying tickets thing, but no way I'm going to buy a ticket for a movie unless it's the same day or the day before the showing...thas' just crazy.

I'm okay with the HP movies, but I much more enjoyed the books. Gus, you and the other heathens should crack open that first one and give it a read; it's well worth it. ;)

I get it. I'm not obsessed with it. Some friends of ours were REALLY REALLY REALLY freaking into HP and they let me borrow the first book. I still remember how uncomfortable I was accepting it (lol) because it seemed like I'm reading a kids' book. But, it's actually quite enjoyable, to me anyway. The series took a decidedly dark turn pretty quickly, which I'm not all that interested in, so I guess I'd say the first couple were good. The rest of it, well...
I thought the best part of the movies was the school/growing-up parts not the Save-the-World Battle of Good vs. Evil thing. First film was great, thereafter they went down hill.
Bart: as someone who hasn't read the books but likes the movies well enough (enough to own the Blu set though not a superfan), I shall as always recommend trying Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality -- an epic 7-book sized fanfic that has been completed for about a year now, and available completely for free. Essentially upgrades the story to make everyone (except Ron) more competent with flaws that make more sense within their competencies. The plot continuity is tighter, too, partly because the whole plot resolves during Harry's first year (though with reasonable plot ports from subsequent years, especially "Goblet of Fire" and "Deathly Hallows", as necessary.)
I inhaled it up to about the 2/3 or 3/4 mark the first time; then having caught up to where the author was writing I stayed away a couple of years until he finished and read the whole thing again from the beginning. I'm actually considering going through it again soon, although I've got so many other things on my plate to work on.
...if no one can figure out what this has to do with Rogue One, I'm, uh, not going to tell you.... :-X :D :nerd:

I've tried reading the Harry Potter books. Not my thing. I know many adults love them, but they definitely seemed like kids books to me.
My daughters are mildly interested in HP. We may pick up the first book to read together and see what happens. They both are interested in seeing the Fantastic Beasts movie.
Like I said - shit gets dark pretty fast, though the first couple of books are pretty enjoyable fare. By the third book (I think that's Prisoner of something-or-other, I'm too tired to look that up), it starts to lose its 'childish' charm and takes a pretty demented and at times depressing turn. I'd read 'em again, if I had time.

People are writing books and publishing stories about it, even. Obviously it's much easier to please the newer, less jaded, moviegoers in China than those of us who've seen it all in the past four decades.

One of my co-workers saw it last night and said it was very good.
Just got back from an 08:15 screening (my employer rented the entire theater....free popcorn to boot) and am already looking to my next viewing with the wife (spouses weren't invited).
I wasn't very optimistic going in after being disappointed by The Force Awakens. I'm happy to report that Rogue One was a blast. I'd even go as far as to call it the best StarWars flic to date.

Saw it with Bro and the nieces this afternoon. Thoroughly enjoyed it; will probably enjoy it better at home on Blu though. Not enough riffs from John Williams, but I understand the point to make the side stories a bit more distinctive. Bro was amazed that Peter Cushing was still alive -- and more amazed that he was not. Girls were sad that rocks fell, but still liked the movie a lot. Segues directly, and I mean directly, into original SW. Archaic computer graphics and shot retakes were a hoot. Death Star blasts quite epic, even if not making some sense (a starship should really out fly what was almost not outflown; and the miss of the second shot really doesn't make sense, and could have been explained with a quick couple of lines.)

It's noticeably not John Williams. I though the score was one of the weaker parts of the film.
I know it's nitpicking, but I also found the text descriptions for various worlds to be a distraction. It seemed very un-Star Wars.
Anyway, still a very good film with some nice nods to previous entries and other parts of the SW universe. The cast was excellent overall, the battles were some of the best of any of the films.
I'd rate it third in the entire series, behind Empire and the original film.

He's an heir apparent to Williams, who can but usually doesn't mimic Williams very well -- and the best score I've heard from him, so far, follows that suit, namely the Medal of Honor game series, which sounds like absolutely classic John Williams.
When he's riffing the Mission Impossible themes he has done a good job, too. Less so in those films (the past three) when doing his own things. Nothing else he has ever done that I've listened to has impressed me at all.

Saw the movie yesterday and enjoyed it just like the rest of the Star Wars movies. Certainly had a different "feel" to it which was perfectly fine for me and enjoyed seeing a different story line play out. Think part of the different feel was certain things you have come to expect weren't in there (i.e. typical opening, a lot about Jedi/force, etc.) but I think it shows these subplots are still very interesting to watch. Don't want to discuss too much yet so things aren't spoiled but was great to see the various cameo appearances by characters we do know (especially one in particular) and the ending was fairly predictable but doesn't take away from the movie at all. Maybe my one critique is the first part of the movie was "jumpy" and tried to cram a lot of history in a short period of time, would have been nice to see that fleshed out a bit more, but then we would have had a 3 hour movie.
In the end, not sure where I rate it amongst the other Star War movies (to be honest I like them all for different reasons) and maybe its not even fair to compare it to the original story line.....last year I saw the Force Awakens (3) times in the movie theatre and then a couple of more times when released to DVD....although I may see this one again, I don't feel as compelled, maybe because we were waiting much longer for FA and the anticipation was much greater.
Either way, good movie and look forward to additional storylines (I believe young Han Solo is next)....seems like franchise is in good hands with Disney.
I for one would welcome a three hour Star Wars film.

OK. My take. Very good movie but not great. The movie moves very fast and covers a lot of ground quickly so you don't get enough time to really care about the characters the way you would in a Marvel film or even "The Force Awakens". So there's no real since of loss when anyone gets wacked. But there's lots of action, great scenes with lots of familiar old faces, and the end manages to hit you with some unexpected turns and lifts the movie to a very good ending. I'd put it in the top 3 but not the best of the bunch. But a damned fine first attempt at a new look at an old story and well worth seeing. I'd go a solid 7.5 out of 10. \m/

40Jr was unimpressed with it, while I squeed because it was basically a Star Wars war movie. He didn't like it because SPOILER ON every main character in the movie dies SPOILER OFF unless they happened to appear in an other Star Wars movie. And there was no appearance from Admiral "It's a trap" Akbar.
But the raid sequence when the fleet arrived, I shot a metaphorical load. :dreamer:

I was very happy with the final product here.
I saw it last night and as the above post alluded to - there are flaws in the story - but it was still a superb movie.
For me (again as mentioned before in the thread) still A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back were in front - but not really by far at all.
Is aw a review that said they liked how the film wasn't trying to be Star Wars - but I thought it was. There were literally dozens of hints to the Star Wars world...the little "mail" robot, some of the characters (the one with the horrible nose that says "He doesn't like you - I don't like you"), the probe that lands on Hoth, the dancing girl from Jabba the Huts lair in TROTJ...just lots and lots

I saw it today with my son. We both thought it was good and the segue to Episode IV was fun. Seemed a bit grittier than most of the other movies. Saw a great trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy II. Good way to spend Boxing Day.

If it's not now my favorite Star Wars film, it's at least a damn close second (after Empire). A pity Gareth Edwards couldn't have directed The Force Awakens as well; I suspect he'd have done a much better job with it than Jar-Jar Abrams did.

Bes, you are on to something. Almost all decent scifi movies can be likened to one or a combination of these Alistair MacLean books/movie scripts: Guns of Navaronne, Where Eagles Dare, or Ice Station Zebra.
Good point to think on, Stagger. Maclean seems to be almost forgotten today, but he was a really good, maybe great writer.
Don't think I could take a movie based on HMS Ulysses, though.
Has to be some hope in it for me to see a movie.

Maclean was a staple of my teenage years.
IIRC, HMS Ulysses was based on his personal experience as a crewman on one of the arctic convoy escorts. Compared to that, writing about blowing up giant gun emplacements or infiltrating Nazi castles would be a breath of fictitious fresh air.

Well I finally saw Rogue One today with the kids and it was pretty epic. Although the youngest is pissed off at Star Wars right now for killing off all of the good guys and gals.
^ I give the movie props for doing that. With Disney at the helm you would think they would be less likely to, but it was a pretty good surprise.
Well to be fair we did watch Force Awakens two days ago and she and her sister are still pissed about Han.

Rogue One is probably the best Star Wars movie ever made and that ever will be made.
- The tone is all serious no silliness, very close to WH40K in dystopian feeling
- The good guys are shown not to be that good after all. I knew there was a reason why I love the Empire and the order it brings to the galaxy.
P.S. Forgot to mention that there is not a trace of heresy or blasphemy in the movie
I thought the dialogue was very mediocre. Nearly moaned aloud at some of the speeches.
And the character development almost non-existent for everyone but the main character, but that's to be expected when crammed into 2 hours so that is understandable.
But, yes, it's good for other reasons. O0
I thought they could have squeezed another movie or two out of the storyline. I'd loved to have seen more back story to the characters too, but man some of the actors are getting up in age and its time for the series to move on I guess or even make clean breaks and recast some of the characters.

I saw this in the cinema a couple of nights back , and I definately come down on the side of being a huge fan of this movie . I think it's now my favourite :smitten:
I was gutted that the good guys bought it in the end , but I get why that had to happen . So all in all I'm well impressed :)

Just saw it last night with my daughter and a couple of her friends. I thought the buildup up was kind of slow until they got to the climactic battle. I liked it, but not enough to rave about it. I'd put it third behind New Hope and Empire.

I appreciated that they subtly lampshaded in the film how silly it was to have such a simple weakness: turns out of course the exhaust port wouldn't normally be a weakness, the engineer had carefully designed that particular one to be.

If you watch the whole thing, they spliced in bits of footage from Empire and Jedi to create scenes that bridge the gap between Rogue One and ANH. It's kinda neat, but not really necessary.
There was a mission in - I think it was X-Wing Alliance - where you run interference for the Tantive IV as it has a rendezvous with Bothan spies to pick up the plans to the Death Star. You have to cover it while the transfer takes place, and then Tantive IV hypers out...to the Tatooine system, where it gets jumped by an Imp SD, and the rest is celluloid history.
Totally bogus mission. The Bothan's stole the plans to the second Death Star.
