Title: Door-Kickers
Post by: Arctic Blast on March 22, 2013, 03:10:51 PM
New game with a buy-able Alpha ($7.99) that looks like a revisit of old Rainbow Six games. It's a top view real time tactical game with the player controlling a SWAT team.

More info here : http://inthekillhouse.com/doorkickers/

I think I might be grabbing this. They're running almost their own little Kickstarter type pre-order Alpha set up from their web site here : http://inthekillhouse.com/buy/

Rock Paper Shotgun has done a couple of write ups on it in some of their The Flare Path articles, here (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/02/15/the-flare-path-broach-and-clear/) and here (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/03/22/the-flare-path-killhouse-rules/).

I bought this morning using the Paypal option and it did not require any activation email.  After I paid, I was redirected to a web page to download the game.  I installed it and was able to play right away without any kind of key.

Haven't played much yet...but I do like the way you drag your movement orders....for $8 I hardly can go wrong:)  Love these type of games, hopefully it sees it's full potential.

Gotta say after playing a little more, really interesting.  There are a bunch of missions available that allow you to breech many different dwelling types.  The order system is pretty simplistic and a combination modes of planning and real time which is really nice.  You can enter planning mode at anytime which pauses the action and allows you to issue orders so you coordinate actions amongst your team.  Then you resume and they carry out the orders.  You can also do the same real time, but a little tougher to issue coordinate movements.

You can use spy cameras to look into areas and throw flash grenades to stun the hostiles...pretty cool.  One thing that I am not sure exists (maybe it does and I haven't figured it out) is being able to chain commands together in planning mode.  For example, issue a movement order to a spot, then turn, then throw grenade, and then scan the room during planning mode.  Not sure if you can do that yet.

I am sure the AI and such will still need some tweaking, but does seem like it will have some potential, especially for a lower budget game.

Great....I am really enjoying its potential so far.  Sure, its still an alpha so can't complain much.  Few things that need to be added, which it sounds like the developer will be.  Right now no multi floor maps, all ground level right now.  Also in planning mode, doesn't appear you can chain your commands yet.  But again, alpha version so a long ways to go, but from just playing it this morning, I think I have already gotten my $7 value out of it:)  Simple to use and fun, at least to me.

Just played a mission where you need to defuse a bomb and take out the hostiles.  I methodically went through the building to try and kill the hostiles first, which I thought I did.  So I then discovered the bomb and started to defuse......guess what, I missed a hostile:(  As my back was turned defusing the bomb, the hostile came up behind me and put a few bullets into my back.....now my swat guy is just a bloody chalk outline....

Important lesson....you don't want to lose your other swat team members so at least somebody is watching over you as you defuse the bomb:)  Fun stuff.

It's alpha, so a lot of stuff to go....but it does have a good base playable game right now, getting my money out of it.  They are thinking of adding things such as multi story buildings, campaigns, mission editors, team customization, snipers, improved ai, improved movement etc.

So i bought into the alpha, first time i've been an early adopter. I don't think i'll have any trouble getting my $8 worth out of the product as is. For the product to have legs features will need to be added and since i am an early bird adopter i get to vote. My top 3 features not in any order are: Multi-story buildings, order chaining, and an editor, the editor is probably a must and gives the game endless tactical possibilities. The only freezes i have had is when alt tabbing, otherwise no crashes, game is stable for me as is. The difficulty i have had is of my own doing, i forget the game isn't paused unless in planning mode. Nothing like an enemy coming out of door and capping you. Not having order chaining probably makes the game harder than it should be hopefully that feature makes it in. The enemy AI has some randomness, behaves differently play to play. I asked but have not been answered yet on their forum as to whether the AI reponds to audio clues...you know, hear gunfire and go check it out. I'm having fun with this game, but without added features [as mentioned above] the fun will be short lived...but i still wouldn't feel dissatisfied with jumping on board. I would give the game a thumbs up for sure, might be different if it was $40 or higher, but it's not.

Here's some screens for you, too bad my guys got smoked..failure.

Here's the situation. One entry point, lights out, alot of angles on the entry door.

Panning around with the spy cam, you can see its a nightmare. Two enemies with a bead on the entry door and other possible locations for enemies to come from.

I played it again after this and failed again. The enemies were in vastly different postitions. You can see and hear doors open so there are clues sometime when enemies are appraoching. Changing the viewpoint of your guys is critical and you need to be fast at times when the game isn't paused.

The top feature I would ask for is being able to control which direction my men are facing as they move.  If I know there's an enemy around the corner I can't just ask my man to focus fire there; he has to walk through first, giving the enemy a precious half-second headstart to get his shot in before my man can react.

Frozen Synapse this isn't, but it certainly has a hell of a lot of potential.  A solid block of feature development could make Door Kickers a minor classic.

I enjoyed frozen synapse it had alot of order chaining possibilities. This game defiantly needs order chaining, the facing is probably the number one reason i die. With an editor and multiplayer there are alot of possibilities.

Two no three things before I jump on a plane - great game with so much potential, I'm sure multi storeys will be in - one of the more pricey buy ins gets your house designed as a level, and I've seen the ai respond to audio so I think that's in

I played this game all day yesterday.......even more so then I have played any recent full blown major game releases lately.  Already got my $8 worth and it still has a ton of potential.  We just have to remember still in early alpha and is not expected to be fully released until at least late 2013 (think I read that somewhere).  This means a ton of time for additional improvements and added features.

I really think they got something here as long as they keep improving it and receive enough support.

We are on the same page with some of the needs, I also posted them at the official forum and seems like most of them (i.e. multi story, editor) will be there at some point.  In fact, there is a thread over there that shows you how to open up a version of the editor now.  Seems like it will be powerful because it will allow you to create your own floorplans with all the special objects.  I think the toughest thing for them will be the introduction of multiple stories since they will have to deal with action going on across multiple levels somehow.  However, to me it is a must especially for other missions to be added where you start by coming in from the roof, repelling through windows, etc.

Other requests that I saw which should be included are windows, non-lethal take downs, etc.....

just played this level and it coincided with my discovery that you dont have to be in front of a door to open it - so scan the room like you did with the door cam, but stay next to the wall as opposed to the door, one guy opens the door - nobody is in line of sight, the other guy throws the flashbang, i let the clock run down until the flashbang hits and you get the startled signs on the bad guys - i hit pause as soon as this happens then give both guys the order to come through the door, one goes straight one for a few steps and takes out the guy at 11 oclock, the other guy is ordered to walk in and turn to 12oclock where he gets the other guy. The first guy is now facing the bathroom where a mac10 toting baffoon usually comes through - hes toast and now he can turn and throw a flash bang into the first bedroom and the other swat guy who came in at 12 oclock goes in there and mops up - love working out the puzzle and so much better now ive sussed the doors!

that will help for sure. I suppose you guys read about holding the rmb down while moving to keep your guy looking the way you want.

in fact you can swivel your viewing while moving just keep the rmb down and move it to where you want your guys to look as he moves. You can only do one guy though. here's an example.

Yep, saw that, but hard to execute that in the heat of battle with multiple people moving.  I am thinking the people should auto look around as appropriate since they should react to their surroundings without micromanagement.

The auto look thing would get some complaints, hey my guy looked left when i wanted him to look right kind of thing. I'd like something along the lines of what frozen synapse did, ability to put look waypoints in your movement line, frozen synapse also has a check feature where your guy will snap his head to check a direction for threats , if none head snaps back on line.

I guess some might, just think sometimes the troopers could make some tactical decisions on their own, as long as good....but I do u deist and some wouldn't like.  I'll have to fire up frozen synapse, got it but never played:)

frozen synapse is turn based, you plot 5 seconds worth of orders and both sides play out the orders together.....repeat next turn until done. All the possibilities in the order chaining is what i liked, you could take along time to get it exactly the way you wanted it, you could also preview your orders. I played it for months, the campaign and online. Bought the red DLC but never played it, it had a coop campaign.

I used my original download link from my email to download.

It said it updated my version, but in the end i had to uninstall my previous version and reinstall with the new file and seems to work fine. From my brief glimpse we have go codes and way points and im not sure but door breaches might be in this one.

I just started playing the Mac Alpha 3 build and am loving the game so far. It is definitely $8 well spent.

One tech tip: if it gets stuck in a particular video mode (for example, if you start it once with an external monitor attached to a MacBook Pro and then start it again without the external monitor), you can edit the file /Users/<your-user-name>/Library/Application Support/DoorKickers/options.xml to set a new resolution. Or just delete the file and it will reset to reasonable default options.

Latest beta version released...now includes a mission generator, although not all features implemented yet.  This has been a gem in my opinion and can't wait to the entire product is completed.  One of the early adopter games I have no regrets in participating......completely got my money worth so far and then some.

Yea i got the email, haven't downloaded the new one yet as i'm busy playing other things. It's the only early access for me so far and i'm  not the least bit disappointed the dev's have been receptive and have really added some good stuff to the game.

yep, they have been open and honest along the way in what you were getting....if I am not mistaken, I bought for something like $9 and even then I thought it was a steal.  And a lot more stuff has got added along the way.  They did bump up the price to $14 or something with the latest build, but that is still a great price in my opinion.

if people are remotely interested, with the mission generator its a no brainer if anyone has any interest in the game style.

I am really hoping they implement multiple story buildings soon....that is one area that I think it could get better since most dwellings have multiple stories....would love to enter from the roof and repel down:)

that would be good, i'd also like maybe cutting the power and breaching under dark conditions or posting snipers when multi story buildings get in or how about high rise breaches  or compounds.

I picked it up a couple weeks ago but haven't fired it up yet (among others).  The upcoming mission generator feature definitely convinced me.

I've not been in too much of a hurry to play many of these Alpha or Beta early release games.  Don't wanna get burned on them too much in one go, before all the features are in.  Some are more playable than others, of course.

This one is very playable in my opinion, even without all the features built in yet...but I hear what your saying about sometimes getting burnt out.

think i picked it up for $8 and it was playable from the get go and fun. Haven't played since alpha 3, it's one of those games you'll play in spurts not for days on end. I keep it installed and jump in when i want to play something for a change of pace. I'd do the early access thing again, but only if the game at least has enough features and gameplay so playing in alpha is fun and interesting, and this one did and unless they broke something its seems to keep getting better.

Yep, I haven't touched it since adding it to Steam whenever that occurred. There see to have been enough features added in that time that it might be worth a new look.

How is this game progressing?  CSGO has put me in the mood for something more tactical.  I like Frozen Synapse, but I could go for something less sci-fi.

I see it officially entered Beta back in April.  Is now a good time to get in on it, or should I wait for the official launch?

Edit: I was mistaken.  Not in beta yet.  From the dev:

Quote1. It's in Alpha. Next update will be Beta.
2. After Beta, we may or may not release a Beta2 update before the final release.
3. Until now, updates have been released ~1 month apart. Since Beta is a more important update it will take longer, but we hope to make it in under 2 months, so perhaps expect a release mid/end of June, if everything goes according to plan.

We don't know how long it will take us to get the game from Beta to Final, it could be 2 months, it could be 3...no way of telling right now, but it's definitely coming out in Q4 this year.

I think when it does goes into beta I might jump on this one.

Well, I have to say that vids like this certainly make it seem like fun:

Two questions:

1) It seems like the AI opposition doesn't stand a chance against your team.  Is it because people are only uploading perfect games?  Can the AI ever hope to win?

2) What are the mission and campaign generators like?

This is a foshur purchase for me, only question is whether my will or steam's breaks first. Which means, yeah -- I'm prolly not gonna make it to a sale.

I wouldn't know enough about the game, let alone even known it existed, if weren't for grogposters. It almost makes up for the puns.

Almost.

I bought in when it was first made available and even thought at that time it was well worth the money....has only gotten better with more features.  If you like this type of game, a no brainer in my opinion,

Yes. There is no reason to wait for beta. The game is superb as is in its present state.

Couldn't agree more. It just gets better and better aswell. Could easily been released ages ago yet they keep on adding more and more to it.

Door Kickers was just officially released today.

I didn't realize it had progressed to feature completion already.  :o

Great game....from the notes it sounds like multi-story buildings are in. This game is the poster child for how early access should go, they've added so much since i bought in. If you have any interest in the game type....BUY IT.

I just bought this for 4.99 on GOG. Been wanting it but had been waiting for a super-sale.

I'm somewhat confused and hope someone who's played it more extensively can shed some light for me. For one, you cannot play any of the Campaigns until you are level 6? I don't get that; seems there should be some kind of initial training Campaign where you go through police academy or SWAT training or something like that, but it pretty much just gives you single missions or create-your-own things to do first, with only rudimentary instructions from the main menu.

For another, once I wrapped my head around the fact that you have to advance in levels to get to the Campaigns, I cannot for the life of me figure out how the heck I'm supposed to tell what level my guys are. The only feedback I see on level are XP that are granted at the end of a mission (if they live of course). Sometimes it says "PROMOTED" as an icon over their name, but there's no indication WHAT they were promoted to. Or mention of level.

What's even worse is I cannot see a roster anywhere of SWAT guys so I can check to see what their progress is. What's the point of granting XP and then having some nebulous leveling requirement that has no explanation nor benchmark from which to measure it?

I LIKE what I've played thus far...I just don't get why it's presented in such a pain in the ass way. Is it just me? What the hell am I missing?

you play the single missions to level your guys up, they start off really simple. Top right main screen, click on roster. you can organize your troops, see their level and assign specific rolls to them as you level up. if you need some screens to help out just holla :)

If you like the style of game play, door kickers is the shit and the poster child for early access done right.

Gus: I've gone back to it each night except for tonight. No games tonight, I'm packing for the trip and getting stuff ready. But I'll definitely come back to Doorkickers. It's a lot of fun.

Finally leveled up past 6th to do the campaign...very cool to see how casualties don't continue with the squad, so early screwups that gut your roster will hurt a lot later on.

Cool. I like the idea of "qualifying" by leveling up to play the campaign.
