Title: As I approach post #1000
Post by: GJK on December 07, 2013, 10:33:37 AM
As I approach post #1000 here on Grogheads, my mind begins to wander:

• What BS was there that I had so much to talk about?
• Why am I often a "thread killer"?
• Why do these guys tolerate me? I mean, why do I tolerate these guys?
• Is what I post here actually read by more than just Staggerwing and Judge Dread?
• Why do I snicker and roll my eyes when the PC gamers talk about how much fun they had playing silly little space games or games with monsters, orcs, trolls or dragons?
• Perhaps I am the best wargamer on this message board. No, I AM the best wargamer on this message board, I just have played against any of these guys yet to prove that.
• Why do I only have one little Gold Box next to my profile? And what they hell does that gold box mean anyways?  Surely it's not a popularity thing.
• Will this thread reach 36 pages like that damn "Rome2" thread?
• When will the sub-40yr olds here learn that Call of Duty and Battlefield aren't real wargames?
• Back to those silly little space and dragon games, isn't this a place for WARGAMING?  Just saying.
  • Is there really a flight simulator/tank shooter that makes you purchase additional planes and tanks?  Silly twits.
• Do I really want to be spending so much time on a forum that has but not one female member?  Do I really?
• Why is the Tabletop Gaming section below the kids' Computer Gaming section and why isn't the Boardgaming board the most popular one here?

But most of all, I wonder....

Let me get back to that thought, just got IM'd on facebook.

  • Edit: Why does this silly thing have to let the world know that I can't spell or I had a change of mind about what I posted by saying "Last edit....".  I want these geeks here to think that I'm perfect in every post that I make.

Not sure why you only have one gold box. You should have several by now.

That fact that you're only now getting up to 1000 posts demonstrates you're not only a bad wargamer, but also not a real wargamer.

If dragons are so silly, why did the military name the M-47 ATGM after them?

Actually, non of this is real.

You are in a coma after dropping the boxes containing all your ASL stuff over the floor.

We are but figments of your tortured imagination............

But you have no gold boxes sir and I don't care if you "administer" this place.

Perhaps I've only reached 1000 (almost) because I actually am off PLAYING WARGAMES and not just flapping my lips about them, or er, poking at my keyboard about them.

The military also named their new Willy Jeep a "Humvee".  Doesn't convince me that they know how to name things properly. Yes, it's their "New" Jeep.  Damn thing came out after I left the service so it's new to me.

For the record- The community consensus on what to call the 'gold boxes' is 'cheeses (http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=4987.msg117313#msg117313)'. Not sure what we should call any other colors yet.

I used to have more cheese but I guess we're both just one-cheese wonders now...

Welcome to that time sink called, Grogheads.  Here you will be able to realize your full potential for getting along with people with similar likes and tastes in many areas of your life.  Soon, you will find yourself thinking of Grogheads even when you are doing normal, every day activities offline.  If left untreated, you will become unable to function unless connected to Grogheads through one of the various devices you can use to access this site.  You may go now, but, be assured that you WILL be back.

Blue Cheese.

We did have several more cheese boxes until we took up arms in the TS affair. Now we are reduced to but one, and I assume
the other bunch of reprobates our Soviet opponents are also suffering from cheese depletion.

Truly, the thought of your massed boxes of ASL counters, maps and rule books send shivers down my spine.

The single-cheesians with several thousand posts got screwed up when I created the Twilight Struggle - specific groups.  That was my screwup but not sure how to undo it without dissolving the groups for the TS game.  Longblade promised to look into it...

Been a good few years since I played ASL, and SL before that, but I do remember investing a lot of time playing some pretty big scenario's, especially Eastern Front ones. Happy days.

He was whining one day about losing all the post count he had at an old forum, so I added about 12,000 to his count to make him feel more manly. I don't remember the exact number I added but if you subtract around 12k you'll have a ballpark number.

As for the cheese count, if you were really paying attention you'd know that it resets after a certain threshold.

And dragons still rock.

Red Barricades and Kampfgruppe Pieper I-II were my favorite ASL games.
I still have them and a bunch of other ASL stuff sitting in the bottom of my closet that hasn't seen the light of day in over 10 years.

My wish now is that Graviteam tactics will some day take on the battles inside Stalingrad and hopefully branch off and do some western front bulge battles too.

there are always the Stalingrad mods for various Close Combat games you could play.  ya know, Close Combat, the pc version of ASL.  ;)

Actually, based on my limited knowledge of ASL, I'd consider the HPS Squad Battles games closer. IIRC there was at least 1 Stalingrad scenario in SB: Advance of the Reich.

NO!
Only Graviteam tactics is the true heir to the 3D gaming experience of ASL.
Cartoon Mission and Close Combat to me are only pretenders to that effect. ::)

I perish the thought of simulating WW2 tactical combat any other way now.

I had a cousin during my HS years come over and want to shoot some hoops in my backyard and got upset that I wouldn't put my counter clipping  aside to shoot some baskets with him.

I remember telling him to go and clean his weed till I'm finished.
Which to me at the time amounted to the same thing.

Ugh, don't remind me of how many that I have left to clip!

Actually, if you're the least bit OCD, it is so soothing yet so frustrating at the same time.  Soothing to nicely round off the four corners on a counter but frustrating when you look down at the pile that you have left to do (and for just that one game).

But with my 2mm and 3mm Oregon Laminations Corner Rounding tool, my counter corners come out perfectly rounded each time!

I love having hanging chads on all my counters. It makes them look so...liberated. Even, free-range. Like they were born in a natural state and can roam around the board as intended by their creators.

When bits flake off, it's just like a snake shedding its skin. A natural, beautiful process.

Get down and give me a thousand, then march your ass into the wargame room and clean those counters up and square that shit away NOW!

Free range chits, that looks like a pizza chit!

Where's the TLC.That is wargaming blasphemy.
Turn in your wargame grog card immediately and maybe you will be allowed to reclaim it again next year once you're  able to show some proper respect to this fine hobby.  :)

Chit man is actually pretty entertaining today, he woke me with that one :)  I have to admit, I didn't really grow up with counter-heavy games back in the day.  My initial wargaming came on the old NES & then the PC (inner city kid, we didn't have the space for anything bigger than Axies & Allies).  Man I lost I invested a lot of time on Steel Panthers & Close Combat back then, I hope it wasn't in vain!
