Title: Football Manager 2014 Discussion
Post by: Grim.Reaper on December 26, 2013, 06:22:36 PM
Decided to separate the FM2014 discussion from the holiday tracking thread for those interested and did not want to get off topic on that one....but wanted to open this up for general discussions.

KyzBp and Nefaro - I know you guys seem to have experience so would welcome any advice you or others have.

1)  Are there any all encompassing mods out there (i.e. kits, logos, photos, etc.)?

2)  I always get hung up on league setup options, any recommendations on how to set these?  According to the game, my computer is rated as 5-star on everything.

- Leagues
- Nations
- Database Size
- Match Detail
etc.

I think this site has logo packs and other such things:  http://sortitoutsi.net/#entry1538207

I recall getting a big logo pack to make sure they were all official ones, such as these:  http://sortitoutsi.net/graphics/logos

EDIT:  I ended up grabbing a Logo Pack from this site http://www.fmscout.com/c-files14.html  because they had relatively "clean" logo packs without any excessive angles or glossiness on them.  Not sure what they have for 2014 however.  The old 2013 version I used doesn't list one for 2014.

As for setup, I usually just pick the individual league or country I plan on playing in and let the rest be simmed.  You don't need to select a bunch of other stuff because it'll just bog down your game and make your save larger.  If you want to be able to switch to a different team in a different league or wotnot then add them as a primary, otherwise don't.

I have only ran full seasons in the MLS as it has some extra stuff I'm used to in american sports, namely the rookie player draft.  Unfortunately I don't like the full-on version of FM since it's just way too bloated with all the pre/mid/post game pep talks, individual player talks, and other crap that I don't find very enjoyable.  You can delegate that stuff to your other coaches on the team but when I was doing so, it even seemed to take a long time to get all that delegation junk sorted by what I did or did not want to handle myself.

Classic Mode was just more fun for me and covers the same stuff that other sports manager games do, without the extra primadonna pampering, constantly whining players, and wide assortment of speeches.  But it didn't have one of my favorite things to do in sports sims: the rookie draft.  Admittedly, the american league (MLS) is the only one that has an actual draft every year as far as I know so it's probably not high on their list to add it to their Classic Mode, despite pleas for it.  Instead of being able to draft your rookies, the game just automatically sends each team a set of (random?) rookie picks at the end of the year.  It is present in the full sim version, just not Classic Mode.  I'd still rather play in Classic Mode just to avoid all the extra BS that I don't really care about.

Thanks Nefaro...as for the league/nation selection, if I only plan on coaching within England, does that mean I should just select that nation?  And if I do that, will I still be able to recruit players from around the world and see how the other leagues perform?  Or will I be restricted to just England?  Probably a dumb question, but this part always trips me up:)

There will still be players you can pick up from around the world.  Their leagues just aren't so intricately simmed every day, but they're still simmed by the AI.

It makes your 'turn resolution' and saves go much faster.

Great, thank you!  Might also give classic mode a go as well just to see how things play out first....

I usually start in the lowest English league with the intention of coaching my team up the ladder and eventually into the Premiership.  In 13 years of playing this, I've managed it exactly ONE time.  That being said, I think it depends on what level you want to start.  If you're starting at the bottom then you don't need to activate many leagues, just all the English ones and maybe Wales, Scotland, and the Irish.  That should provide you with plenty of players and places for your scouts to roam.  If you're starting with a Premiership team then consider activating more countries, also use the large data base.

I love that the game will install Mods straight from the Steam Workshop.  I use the Scorpio V3 Skin and the FMSK Button Logos pack.  I found both in the Workshop.

It seems like the hard thing to mod this time is the stadium backgrounds.  I used a file I had from FM12 and it seems to have worked fine but it sounds like other people are having some problems.

Overall I LOVE what I've seen so far.  I use the full mode and do delegate the press conferences but the rest kind of adds to the game.

Simply love the user interface in this game, just easy and awesome for a text simulation...if only front office football could learn from it!

Couple more questions.

1)  Is there a report/screen that shows what the game feels the top teams are in the league based on the players it has (not based on stats, standings, wins, etc.)?

2)  When I do a worldwide player search and I look for goal tenders as an example.....I look at there stats and it tells me how many game appearances they had.  But under the section where it says how many wins/loses/draws they had, they are always blank.  Would be nice to know how successful they are, but seems to be missing.  Is this a bug or on purpose for some reason?

1) I don't think there is.  I think the closest you'll get is in the League Screen it shows each teams promotion odds.

2) I'm no help there.  I don't think it's a bug though.  I seem to remember that from previous editions.  It should populate once the initial season gets underway.

I totally agree with you about the interface.  I have honestly not been this impressed by a game in a long time.

My problem is I couldn't locate the Pre-game Editor.  I couldn't start as a fictional, empty team.  I took over the Concord Rovers of the Skrill South.  I still haven't played a game yet.  I've been spending a lot of time exploring the game.  This was a great $25 investment.  My wife may think otherwise though.

Not sure if you found the editor yet, but you need to go into steam->tools and you'll see the editor listed there for install.

As for the W/L/D, I simmed through half a season an no w/l/d stats...gk in my league are ok, but these are the ones I am scouting where they are blank...not sure.

The more I play, the more I appreciate the interface...just real easy.

Nefaro, do you know of another site that hosts those facepacks and graphics?  You need to login to the one you gave, which I have no problem signing up for.  But I have tried twice now and the validation email to activate never makes it to.  I have checked all spam/junk folders, no luck.

Grim- If you bought this through Steam there are a bunch of mods for the game through Steam Workshop.  Installation is as simple as a mouse click.  If not, here are some other sites to check:

FM-Base: http://www.fm-base.co.uk/forum/graphics-downloads/

FMScout: http://www.fmscout.com/c-files.html

Sortitoutsi: http://sortitoutsi.net/

FM-View: http://forum.fm-view.net/files/

The Dugout: http://www.thedugout.tv/community/forumdisplay.php?f=281

Most of these will include instructions on where to install everything.  It's not complicated but I just fell in love with the one click installation on Steam.

Let us know what you go with.

I went with the Scorpio V3 Skin and the FMSK Button Logos pack.  They work nicely together.  I highly recommend the Scorpio V3 skin at minimum.

Yep, I downloaded the same buttons as you and they look good.  Was now after the full face pack but does not appear to be in the steam workshop...only sortitsu.net site, which I can't register:(

You may also want to add these mods to your game:

Country's Complete Pack Logo and Competitions Complete Pack Logos.

They fill in the holes left by the other logos mod.  Both are on Steam Workshop.  I've only seen one error where it still shows the English 6th level as Blue Square North and South instead of Skrill N/S.  Not a big deal to me.

Hey KyzBP, I appreciate the offer, but with my schedule (once back at work) and the fact that I am still wrapping my head around this beast, probably will hold off on any MP at this time.  Maybe once I am more knowledgeable in it and time is more available, could consider giving it a whirl.  I have really appreciated all your help with this game so far and the tips for the mods. I will be checking them all out.  Thanks!

The pleasure has been mine.  I wish more Americans would give this a try.  Even if you don't like soccer it's still a top notch sports management sim.

Can't argue that at all....very well done and has about everything anyone could imagine (i.e. presentation, stats, easy to use, actual gameplay engine, etc.)...if only this could be applied to other sports....

The only thing that keeps messing me up in this game is setting up your league to start with....I know folks have provided some thoughts, but I get hung up choosing the right leagues, nations, database sizes, etc.  So afraid that I will choose the wrong setup and have to start over again....once I get past this mental block, I will be fine:)

I think it's all just personal preference.  If you want to go for a big club then make sure you make the world big enough to find players.  You can scale down if you want to start at a smaller club.

The beauty of the engine is that you can change which countries and leagues are active even after you've started a game.  I think the only thing you can't change is the database size.  I always start with the largest data base.  If the game tells you the game speed will be slow then just turn off leagues and countries until you need them.

Yep, I will definitely start with a large database, appears my machine can handle.

This is the kind of setup I want.

- I only want to coach/manage in the English league
- I want to be able to scout/loan/buy/transfer players from all over the world
- I would like to see game stats of the players from across the world...don't want to control them, just see them to help determine how good they are

So "I think" if I only select England I would get this setup.....at least I hope:)  If not, would love to hear how my setup should be.

For what you want I'd set the countries to England
Make it playable down to the Skrill N/S level.
Set the database to Large.
When selecting a team, pick one from either Barclays Premier or Blue Square Championship.
From here it's up to you.  If you want a big transfer budget and no debt then take a team like Chelsea in the Premiership or Nottingham Forest in the Championship.  Neither team has any debt.  If the finances don't scare you then just chose whoever catches your eye.

Once in the game, subscribe to the top leagues in some of the bigger countries Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Italy, and Germany for example.  That should give you news reports from those leagues allowing you to follow international players.

Hire as many scouts as your board will allow.  Make sure they have high marks in judging potential and current ability.  Then send them out to do your dirty work.

That should give you a pretty good start.  Let me know if that works like you want.

It worked on me  ;D.

This is the time of year when the NFL is winding down (especially if you're a Lions fan  >:( ) and there really isn't much going on until April.  I'll follow the rest of the Premiership season and then get ready for NHL playoffs.  Before this game I couldn't have cared less about soccer.  Now I pay a few $ extra every month to watch the games.

1st friendly, I go up 1-0 and then my vice-captain own goals and we settle for a draw.

I went with the Concord Rangers in the Skrill South.  I think I'm screwed because they only have a 1600 seat stadium.  It's only October and I'm 25k over budget and 35k in debt.  I may not last a full season without the board axing me.  :(

I added the Lower League pyramid mod.  If I get canned I may look even lower to start my career.  Love this game.

....very well done and has about everything anyone could imagine (i.e. presentation, stats, easy to use, actual gameplay engine, etc.)...if only this could be applied to other sports....

The old Eastside Hockey Manager from around 2007 obviously used a much more primitive version of this same engine, except for hockey.  The developers have made massive improvements over the years because that old game's interface was a goddamn nightmare.  Would be nice if they did another with the latest and greatest.

It's funny you mention EHM.  I was just playing that before I bought FM14.  There's a small but enthusiastic community still supporting EHM.  OOTP is trying their hand at a Hockey Manager sim, Franchise Hockey Manager ( http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/franchise-hockey-manager/ ) but they released it way too soon.  It may eventually catch up but they have some work to do.

One of the worst releases of all time was the OOTP hockey game....I joined at first but ended up getting a refund....hopefully a few versions down the road they'll get it, but far from playable in my mind.

Grim- Would you be interested in an MP game?  I've never played one but, with a few more people, it may be interesting.

Ok, played around with settings a bit and still trying to figure out the right way too go......

I just selected England with large database option and it roughly got me 14,000 players to start with.....

I went to the extreme and selected every nation and it roughly got me 155,000 players to start with....

I hit the recommended option (button at bottom of setup screen) and it selected the nations of England, mexico, brazil, argentina, Germany, Italy, usa, mexico, and spain with 45,000 players....with this option I went down to 3.5 stars of system game speed...computer performance stayed at 5 stars.

So here comes the questions....

1)  What is the recommended option basing their recommendations on?  These are the main nations involved with football?  They think my computer can handle this setup? etc.

2)  If I just go with the England only option, is 14,000 player pool enough to have a good game that has all levels of players for many years of a career?

3)  If I just go with England, will I still have enough international players to choose from?

4)  Should I go with the recommended setup?  I don't plan on coaching outside of England, but I guess one never knows.

My biggest concern is starting with the wrong options that either is going to limit my flexibility later in my career and system performance/speed.  Don't want to get into something and find out 20 years later it takes hours to sim a day.

Now I remember why I never fully got into the game since I can never get out of the starting blocks.  I know I am likely over thinking this stuff, but I take my sports sim seriously, especially a career sim.

You will still have players from other countries available if you only select England.  I believe they are randomly generated and progress via a more simplified advancement scheme than the ones in England who would be actively tracked in all ways.  They're just different levels of detail IIRC.

In my last FM2013 game, I only had the US selected as the focus but I ended up getting some extra talent from Mexico and a few other countries.  In fact, that was where most of my non-draft players came from.

Thanks Nefaro....so dumb question....when they say the database has 14,000 players, what does that really mean?  Does it mean at any given time (players on teams and available players from around the world) equal roughly 14,000 and won't exceed that?  Just trying to understand the difference between selecting one nation and getting 45,000 and selecting them all getting you 155,000.  obviously seems like you have more variety with the larger database, but in reality does that really matter much in this game?  Don't know:(

I'm not really sure about this whole subject, but I think that's just the amount of players that it habitually tracks stats and such for.  Others may be randomly generated as you play, but they're not actually playing in simmed games and doing all the detailed stuff that your team's players are doing (unless you hire 'em).   IIRC?..

I dunno.. maybe others know better.

I had really thought about picking up FM2014 on sale (is it still on sale?) but decided that I'd be fine just using FM2013 for another year, since I only play it on occasional stretches and I don't watch the game itself to be concerned about updated rosters & such.  Anyway, my point here is that I'm also not sure if they changed anything in this regard.  Sounds like the way it's always been, but I'm still not sure exactly what happens with the initial setup selections and what the player amounts listed actually entails.

Yep, I hesitated when I purchased too...but after purchasing, does seem to look and play very nice compared the last version I tried.  I picked it up for $19, so not a big investment.  To be honest, it really is all these options/setup stuff and not a great explanation in the manuals to really know what your getting always makes me go crazy with this game.  I think once I can figure this out, I can actually start enjoying it for once.

You'll be just fine picking only one or two countries.  You'll still be able to recruit players from elsewhere.  No worries!

One thing I certainly didn't want to happen is having too much being simmed every day, the database getting overly bloated to no extra immediate effect I will ever see, and the daily simming taking a long time.  I'd rather the game just vaguely track the bajillion leagues I don't bother paying attention to in the most basic way, along with the players in them.  They're still there but when you only advance the game by a day at a time, it certainly pays to have it run as smoothly as possible.

Agreed...I don't need the same detail from all the leagues, but I do want where it tracks the player stats so I know how well they are doing as I recruit them.  I don't want to rely solely on ratings.

Back when I first started playing with CM 00/01 I would throw in everything and it would take forever to sim a day. Now, especially since I normally play lower league sides, I will probably only put a couple of countries in.

And to be clear, is the only reason to put multiple countries in is if you ever want to coach in them?  if you never want to coach in them, is there any other benefits if having the additional countries?

I need to look at the manual to see how the country selection works these days. At one point they had different levels of selection, where if it was a country you planned on managing in it would be set to one level, and if it was just a country you wanted more detailed simming in, then it would be the other level. I was thinking that with countries not selected it would still quick sim the domestic competitions, but I'm not sure it is doing that.

For some fun reading about Football Manager I ran across this earlier this year on the kindle Football Manager Stole my Life (http://www.amazon.com/Football-Manager-Stole-My-Life-ebook/dp/B008VHYUY6/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1388272114&sr=1-1&keywords=football+manager+stole+my+life).

A wonderful start to the new season. My starting goalkeeper is nothing to write home about, but he pulled a hamstring right before the start of the season, so the campaign began with his backup in the box. Not pretty. We did manage to win our 3rd game though, so we are sitting mid table with 3 points at 1-0-2.

That's pretty cool about the book:)  Just curious, is there any "strategy" guide books out there for the game?  Maybe that is the type of book I need that someone might explain all this stuff to me.

I checked the manual for setup options and sadly not very detailed.  There are multiple options such as playable versus viewable, just doesn't go into a lot of detail of all the pros and cons.  Wish there was a detailed guide somewhere that really explained that stuff in detail.

Fmscout website has a free strategy guide when you make an account there. Its based on one of the earlier releases and promises to get a new one out havent been kept for two years now, BUT that guide is still pretty thorough and indepth!
If you dont fancy registrering I think I would be able to send it to you. PM me in that case with your email address.

The other guide site I posted too also said the same thing.  It said using a smaller database gives you a more of a challenge since all the teams will have a smaller pool to get talented players so seems to backup his statement.  That other site really does a great job in explaining all the setup options and their impacts such as choosing your favorite team, nationality, etc.

Since I am not a Football expert in understanding the real life team and leagues, is there a site that lists all the leagues around the world and also defines which of the leagues are considered the top/premiere league within that nation?  Trying to see what level of sub league I want to play down to and not sure which league in each country is considered the "top" league, unless the top league is always listed first in the selection options.  Thanks.

I might look around a bit today and see if I can find a different facepack.  I know there are a lot of smaller ones that cover specific teams, countries, or leagues so I may give some of those a go.

As far as leagues and team go, check out the Champions League: http://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/season=2014/clubs/index.html
That's a list of the top clubs in Europe.  Every year teams qualify based on their position in their respective leagues.  The more respected a league is the more teams it sends to the Champions League.  This link will take you to a list of member countries.  Clicking on each country will show you that country's top league and the current standings. http://www.uefa.com/memberassociations/index.htm

Thanks for the links, that should help.....I am probably going to hold out for the big mega pack of pictures, hoping they can correct whatever server issues they are having.  I am only trying to download it the FREE way, while other people paid for the Premiere membership and they can't even download...feel bad for those folks who bought that membership just to get it.

Looks like their support team is now looking into the download issue, hopefully will be resolved today.  Here is the message.

Hey guys I am looking into this, just made a change and am testing it now, anyone reading this who has had a SUCCESSFUL download please post, as far as i'm concerned it's not working for anyone right now and it would be useful to know if it is infact working for some people.

If you are still having problems, please don't continue to post in here, I am aware of the problem and will post an announcement in the next few hours when I believe the problem has been fixed

As always apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Thanks for the update.  I was just looking at that thread.  They must have just posted that.  Since I play at the lowest level most of my players don't have pictures associated with them so the Facepack really helps with immersion.

For domestic competitions, I believe they are always listed in order from top leagues down to lower.

Just an in-game update:

I created a blank, fictional team using the pre-game editor.  After filling the empty staff positions (my board doesn't believe I need a Keeper Coach or a Physio  ???), I picked up 18 of the best players you can get for free...or so I thought.  We started our climb out of the Skrill South (England) by going 5-0 in our first 5 games.  I also managed to pick up the Manager of the Month award.  Ahhh, life was good, I was a genius.  Unfortunately the month of September seems to have other plans for my team.  We've just dropped the last 2 games, picked up two crucial injuries, and I'm about to call up two 16 year olds to cover the for the wounded.

The download is crawling along but it is still moving.  ;D

It's a little more forgiving than the upper levels but it has it's own set of challenges.  I just seem to have a lot more fun trying to take an obscure team up the ranks than I do starting with one that's already filled with good players or is financially secure.

If you want a really challenging and lengthy career, load this into your game: Adding England Lower Leagues.  It's available in the Steam Workshop.  It adds 3 more lower levels to the English leagues.  You'll literally be signing guys who work in your office or bag your groceries.

To try and cover the flaws of my backup gk while the starter was recovering from his hamstring pull I switched to a 3-5-2, and proceeded to win all my league games in September going 4-0 and won the manager of the month award in skrill north. Now in mid-October we are sitting mid-table with 16 pts from 10 games, but only 3 points out of a playoff spot. We have made it to the 4th qualifying round of the FA Cup, meeting the 1st boardroom goal for the team. The holiday season is coming up, which always is a brutal schedule, but hopefully we will come out of that mid-table or better.

The Skrill regional leagues are bad enough. Going even lower must be really painful. :)

Because I still have problems understanding which formations work best for which situations, why is a 3-5-2 better at covering for your GK then, say, 5-4-1 or even 5-1DM-3-1?

I haven't tried 5 in the back. My thought would be they run into your wall of players further up the pitch if you are running a 3-5-2 than a 5-4-1. That and I have more midfielders than defenders :)

I've been tempted to try it but my favorite part of the game is trying to uncover the hidden gems myself.  I tend to overload my U18 or U21 with prospects in hopes that one or two may end up either contributing to the Senior Squad or, better yet, have one of my free signings attract the attention of a larger, wealthier club. $$$  :).

Yes it's the one from Sortitoutsi.  I think all you have to do is sign up.  I don't think it costs anything.  I've had access to that site for a long time.  I don't remember if I paid anything.

Because my staff is so full of unknowns, I've had to do a search and add their pictures in myself.  Ahh, the joys of the lower leagues.

I appreciate that, but yep it would be a tough thing to do trying to get that much data moved....before the file stopped and became corrupted, it did include about 100k photos I can use as a start.  I'll try again sometime down the road and hopefully I will have better luck then.

The money from the FA cup has been the difference between a profit and loss so far. I've made it to the 1st round, where we will be facing a league 2 side. Luckily we are playing at home so we should get some money out of the ticket sales. We are sitting in 4th place at the moment, but the busy holiday schedule is about to begin.

Oxford always seems to make it into the Conference Premiership and then haunt me until I get out of there.

So my team healed, regained form, and have been cruising along atop the Skrill South.  Then we get our first FA match against a completely unknown team, Jim's Crisps Shack I think  :-\, and then we dropped off the radar completely.  The board's angry, the fans are disappointed, even the mom of one of our U18's (who's also our temporary Physio), walked away in disgust.  Well, time to focus on promotion.

Too funny:)  Maybe it isn't so much fun coaching in the lower leagues after all:)

When all is said and done the Lower Leagues are where it's at.

Yeah, I likely will start in a lower league, just not sure how low at this point....

I downloaded the FM Genie Scout to see what it was all about.  I need to throw that thing into Mt. Doom as fast as possible.  The temptation to use it is way too strong.  It looks like it would be super helpful for digging up great buys at the lower level.  I plugged in a 16 year old who is in my starting 11, thinking this kid is a real gem, only to find out he's not going to get much better.  :(

I hate to say it, when I start I'll likely use it:)  Think it will help me understand things and I will just consider it my advanced scouting department since I don't have a clue:)

Did you just get the FREE version or the one that costs a few dollars, which is supposed to have a few more features with it?

I just grabbed the free one.  It seems pretty powerful buy itself.  I have to go back to work tomorrow but when I get home I may peek under the hood of the enhanced version.

Good luck!  This game seems well worth the time you put into it.

A crazy night of foot-to-ball. Started off by drawing with Bury in the FA Cup 1st round at home. Followed 3 days later by a league win at home. Then 4 days later we lost to a no name team in the FA Trophy qualifying round. 4 days after that was the replay at Bury. We go up 1-0 at 14', and then 2-0 at 81', though they were unlucky and denied 2 goals due to offsides. They responded though, and equalized with goals at 83' and in injury time. Then in extra time we jump ahead 3-2, but they pull back again ending extra time at 3-3. They then proceeded to win the shootout 5-3. 3 days later we had another league game and we lost that I think just due to being exhausted. Still sitting in 4th place in Skrill North as we head into December.

What a heart breaker with Bury.  Do you watch the games or sim them?  I watch everything except the friendlies.  If I was watching that Bury game I would've had to walk away for a little while to avoid doing something dumb.

I watch all of them. I have had it set at comprehensive highlights most of the season. I'm impressed with how far they have come with the 3d engine. I'll probably always have a soft spot for the dots, but I have been enjoying the 3d engine.

Bury were definitely the better team, but we gave them a good fight. You can just see the way they move about the pitch and handle the ball that the players are better.

Extended highlights are the way to go.  The plays the game out in 10 minutes or less.

It still kills me when people complain about the graphics or the game engine.  The graphics get better every year and the engine provides fairly accurate scores and stats.  I dare anyone to find a better sports management sim.

I have to agree...can't imagine how anyone can complain about the 3D match engine graphics engine....looks simply amazing to me and no other career sim/text sim comes close to it in my opinion.  Whether it is statistically realistic, no idea since I am not a Football expert, but I have really never seen anything crazy yet.

If an American Football (FOF exists, but nowhere near the same) or Hockey (I know FHM/EHM exists, but not really close) game could be put together just like Football Manager, I would be extremely ecstatic!

I hate Sierra for what they did to that franchise. They either should have let it continue as 2d, or let dynamix have the time to make 3d work properly before releasing. Instead they forced it out, then recalled it, and closed dynamix.

Yep, was a sad day when the game disappeared.  I still remember getting the first version, hunting down a copy near me....had to drive an hour or two in order to pick it up, but was well worth it....played the game to death!

Now we have nothing like it on the PC and likely never will.....

I still have 2 1997 versions (1 unopened), and 2 1998 versions of FPS Football.  That was the best game for American Football.  It's amazing that nothing since has really come close.

They did an okay job with Blood Bowl, but it was extremely unpolished and I imagine they would have never got that license if it wasnt for the lawsuit between them and Games Workshop. They are on the 3rd or 4th iteration and still dont have a proper windowed mode. I imagine if they had developed a real Front Page Sports Football game it would have been a disappointment. It appears that either the web game came and went without any notice or it was never released.

I actually like their Blood Bowl.  The UI could have been a bit better but it's certainly playable.

At the half way mark of my FM game, despite a four game win less streak, we are tied for first.  I don't think it will last though as we seem to be fading.

*Make that 5 games.  I'm benching all my starters.  >:(*

I could never bring myself to play the blood bowl games...I just simply want a good American football game without creatures playing it:(

Another football game that had "potential" was Head Coach Football....it actually had the premise I wanted (coach/manage and then see things unfold with decent graphics), but really did not click with me when released, never liked how it was implemented.  Maybe if they would have stuck with it, in a few versions it could have gotten there.  With the NFL as popular as it is, really is truly amazing that nobody has tried to corner the market on the PC (maybe Madden is just too big to over come even though only on a console).

I have enjoyed Blood Bowl but all versions of BB have two big issues:

1)  Bad AI

2)  Regular multi-player desync.

Considering that multiplayer matches are timed and if you want to win you'll have to sit there playing unimpeded for a good twenty or thirty minutes.   Mix in the occasional desync, which tends to get worse until you disconn from each other, and even it's cool persistent online team management side can be frustrating at times.  This wouldn't be such an issue with me if the single-player AI was passable but it's bad.  Once you have a vague idea how to play, you can beat it like the chicken you're having for dinner.

Players have been begging for this stuff to be fixed ever since the original version and now, on the third release, they still haven't really fixed them.

I never played multi-player but the AI is kind of suspect and that gives me a chance to win once in awhile.  ;D

So I finished my season tonight. The 2nd half was agonizing. We started with a run of 13 out of 15 points in January, then I lost 1 of my 2 strikers for 6 weeks that had been on a tear and the team just lost steam at that point. We were sitting in 3rd place then. We wrapped up the season winning only 1 of 10 games, fell out of the playoffs to 8th place, and got to watch a team we just beat 7-1 go into the playoffs instead of us. I picked up my 2nd manager of the month award for the January run, but the rest of the season ensured I wouldn't be a serious contender for manager of the year.

Managed to pick up the Thumping achievement for my 7-1 win, and the Team Performance achievement the same week for 5 players making the team of the week.

Now to rebuild and try again next year.

Thanks for mentioning this. I really wanted to like this game and gave it several tries, but it was never engaging enough for me.

As for Blood Bowl, that was another big disappointment. Love the board game, but the PC game cheats horribly with its die rolls, making the game a huge frustration for me.

That's a rough season.  Nothing worse than getting your hopes up at the beginning of the season only to see them come crashing down.  I usually manage to get out of the Conference N/S in the first year and then linger awhile in the Conference Premier.  I have a feeling I'll be doing the same as you at the end of this season. :(

I was reading a guide at work today (http://www.fmscout.com/a-player-attributes-roles-and-duties-explained.html) and am tempted to restart my game with some of these things in mind.

Thanks for mentioning this. I really wanted to like this game and gave it several tries, but it was never engaging enough for me.

As for Blood Bowl, that was another big disappointment. Love the board game, but the PC game cheats horribly with its die rolls, making the game a huge frustration for me.

Head Coach was a Day One purchase for me.  I had such high hopes for it.  I knew it was going to suck the minute I was able to sign any Free Agent without any competition from other teams.  Then having to play 6 minute quarters just to keep the stats realistic.  Such a disappointment.

Brant might give me he'll for this, but after reading through this thread this looks like it might be an enjoyable game from e management perspective.

I rank soccer up there with tennis, baseball, and golf as some of the most boring spots in the world to watch. But playing tennis and golf is actually enjoyable. Soccer...well, if it's me in control and the management aspects are immersive, and you can go off on 7-1 tears on occasion...I think I might check this out eventually.

If you like sports management sims Banzai, you'll love this.  I never played, watched, or even gave any thought to soccer until about 13 years ago when I accidentally bought this game thinking it was for American Football.  I've bought nearly every iteration since.  I'm especially impressed with this version of the game.

Let us know if you pull the trigger.

Yeah it wasn't a very serious campaign. I just picked a team and dove in to see what was new and how classic played. I should have spent time working on the staff and squad at the beginning of the season. I wasn't too disappointed with the season. We were predicted to finish 17th, and the board expected us to be mid-table.

Was taking a look at the EPL in my game. Man City was leading Man U by 5 points with 2 games to go, lost both games while Man U won and took the title. They secured a double winning the Champions League as well over Juventus.

Wow. I've just done some reading on the structure of English football clubs.

I admit total ignorance to this. I knew it was obviously a big sport over there, but had no idea that it had so many levels and so many clubs. And I admit the entire structure of promotion and advancement is pretty cool, actually. It's almost overwhelming to even contemplate.

The promotion/relegation system is such a great way of making each game and season important.  Can you imagine if College football (NCAA) was set up like English football?  Heck, even MLB would be more exciting.

I admit, sadly, that my most cherished computer game accomplishment was taking Forest Green to the Premiership and  I've been gaming since the 80's.

I don't watch soccer, nor did I ever actually play it when I was a young kid (as some do).  But I have enjoyed last year's Football Manager a great deal.  If you like sports management text sims, this is by far the highest quality one out there.  I learned the strategies and details of the game as I played - it's easier to learn than most sports and is very similar to hockey, of course.  Probably easier actually.

The agony in pictorial form. :) Barcelos was injured on 1/25 and his next game was 3/15 (sat out the 3/18 game to recover).

His one big moment after the injury was the game against hednesford when he scored a hat trick. Not sure why it won't show the video in 720p.

picked this up a couple of days ago. currently coaching a team in league 2 of England. relying on my assistant coach for most things. I think the most daunting thing is that you can choose what and how your team trains and that gets broken down to individual players as well. you can then also tell each player or position how to play during a game. I would like to think that the game emulates those decisions but think its mostly fluff over substance. anyway it is very deep and can be overwhelming if you don't have a rudimentary understanding of the game. im off to scout free transfers since I have no budget!

been checking out sortitoutsi for facepacks. they have 3 download mirrors but going to them gives no options to download unless I register or download something extra like videoplayers? am I missing something here or do I need to mess with the torrent to get these facepacks? hate having to jump through hoops for something so simple.

got the rapidshare to download but 16 parts will be way to slow at those speeds they offer. guess I have to mess with that torrent crap

tried fmfaces.net and the Panini facepack. simple enough with 8 parts but was downloading at a speed of 50kb/s. not going to download stuff for 40-48 hours.

For some reason it never bothered me to have faces on this game and yet it did for my OOTP 14 game.

I think that may be down to familiarity. I know what some football players look like - so to have "stand in" faces for them would ruin the immersion for me whereas I have no idea what a single baseball player looks like - so the faces you get in that game not being accurate doesn't bother me in the slightest.

From the screenshots, the interface in '14 looks pretty much like '13.  So they must've done the UI upgrade last year and only tweaked it this year.

I was tempted to pick up '14 on the sale yesterday, but since I picked up FOF7 recently (amongst others) I'll probably just wait until a bigger sale before the '15 version comes out later this year and use '13 if I get the itch.

I think every other year is a good buying strategy for this franchise.  I got a solid 2 years of enjoyment out of FM12 and I don't see me getting any less out of FM14.

What kind of makes me laugh about this game is that it's almost totally devoid of any character. The series always has been. NO background music or noise, like clicking cameras, or real voice overs for questions or chattering in press conferences and the like - and yet it's so damned addictive!

I usually have The Who, Pink Floyd, The Stones, or some other British Invasion music going in the background.  I'm kind of glad they don't use any.  You do get crowd noise during games at least.

I must've played about 8 hours today. After taking the dog for a walk at 6 this morning and making the wife breakfast in bed, I shut myself in my hole and played it straight.

I took a break to help my daughter tidy her room (that took two hours!)...but pretty much solidly played FM.

I also watched Serpico, Carlitos Way and The Eagle Has Landed whilst playing

Cool day :-)

My plan for tomorrow is very similar.  I plan on playing while watching the NFL playoffs.  We're supposed to get a blizzard tomorrow as well so shoveling should force some breaks on me.

Oh well. Hope this version is decent.

Good luck with it Banzai.  I hope it doesn't differ too much from the PC version.  This forum may help.  I believe it includes IPad:
http://community.sigames.com/forumdisplay.php/30-Handheld-General-Discussion?s=9deb82751ac11fb8d1be14dfc7355242

Thanks, KyzBP. Didn't you post some links in your AAR also? I'll go check. I'll look at this forum too. I'll try to find the manual online and give it a read-through as well because I'm only vaguely familiar with positions from my own one year of playing soccer - back in 5th grade. I remember five forwards, two halfbacks, and three fullbacks - I was a fullback and played forward once. I'm making the connections but some of the basics elude me and I don't want to miss anything.

Did not buy this years rendition of Football Manager. Usually its a bi-yearly buy for me. Takes two years to usually see an improvement in the series.

Just won all 5 trophies for Sheffield United in last years rendition.( League Cup, FA Cup, Champions League, Premier League, Charity Shield).          Buying a midfield wonderkid from Brazil was what put my team over the top. All my investment in buying young talent finally payed off. Should be interesting to see if I can hold on to all my young talent. They constantly want pay raises and my board has no intention of increasing stadium size to increase revenue. Even with the Champions league money I am barely making ends meet. Im pretty sure if I sold my Brazilian midfield superstar, I could get around $80,000,000.

I have a striker from Ghana on my lowly Skrill team that scored all three goals in our first game (that was a draw, 3-3). I imagine he's going to want to get paid if he keeps that up.

1-1-3-5

1 Striker  Total poacher with good finishing

1 Central Attacking midfielder with good finishing and pace

3 central midfielders with the middle player being a defensive style midfielder. Two others are creative/playmakers.

3 central defenders   Big strong dudes with high strength/ jumping/ positioning

2 fullbacks with good stamina/ crossing / and pace. Brazilians make the best  They are your wingers on the attack and outside defenders on defense.

This is pretty close to what I am taking about except Doubai would be more online with the other two central midfielders.

Damn.

This makes me wanna fire up FM2013 again, after seeing bboyer's strategies.

I can handle setting the general formations and assigning players, for someone who doesn't live & breath the game.  But it's some of the special team stuff that I'm a bit iffy on when it comes to player placement.

Some of the in-game calls' specific intended results, and when (or for which team strengths/situations) to use them, is also my weak spot.

General rule of thumb is stay calm and positive in most of your team talks. Only break out the hairdryer treatment when you are getting beat by a lesser side, and dont do it too often.

I stay away from most touchline commands. Pretty much play with the same strategy all the way through the game.

I really don't understand why, but my Cheesefaire FC tied the first game 3-3, then won the next two, putting them at second in the Skrill South.

The last game we slaughtered Farnborough 7-2.

I don't hardly understand the positions and had accidentally screwed up my First Team by clearing them all out and tried to fit them all back together like a broken eggshell. I think I created a weird scheme in the Tactics section just before that third game pounding we gave.

I'd say I'm a genius that created some mystifying super-tactic, but I can't. Also, Farnborough was probably just a terrible excuse for a team.

I did learn that trying to sign players is a pain in the ass. I went into a bidding war for a player my assistant said was a huge star and we couldn't do without him, so I kept upping my bid and kept having it rejected until finally the club accepted it. Then I had to make a contract offer. I did, and he snubbed me, the ass. Lo and behold there's no way to make another contract offer so I guess he went away for good. Is that the way it works? Strange, but I am learning as I go.

That's why I prefer to sign Free Transfer players.  Nothing sucks more than haggling with a team only to have the player reject you...except losing 7-2 to some guy who just cobbled together a lineup while you've spent countless hours trying to perfect a tactic  >:(.

Elgin City are giving me a freakin headache!

I've got no money to buy a half decent player. The ones I have are crap with a couple of shining stars. I was 2-0 up against an opponent in a game last night and lost 3-2. If I'm not losing from the outset, I'm losing after I've taken the lead. I've played 18, won 4, drew 4 and lost 10!

In the league alone I have played 15 won 3 drew 3 and lost 9 :-(

This years version definitely seems more difficult.  I'm kind of happy about that.  Guys like me, who know next to nothing about soccer, shouldn't be able to easily move a team up the ranks.  I think this will be the version that forces me to better learn the inner workings of soccer.

I'm in complete agreement, which is why I'm wondering what the hell I'm doing that's winning these games.

I THINK I created a 4-3-3 formation (goalie at the bottom, then four guys, then two ranks of three each - that's how you describe a 4-3-3, right?). Not that this is all that unusual but it was different from what I had been doing. And I just knew Farnsborough was going to have us for lunch, but exactly the opposite occurred.

And to be completely honest - winning is not all that much fun. I'd much rather have my team getting pummeled and me figuring out why than being way ahead of the curve...and not knowing why! I'm actually afraid to fire it up again because if I start losing, I'll get mad, and even though I recognize that's ridiculous and I should be losing...well, I don't know.

There's a ton of fan support sites as you guys have been posting - and I greatly appreciate that - but what I need is a site that is basically "Football for Dummies." I need each position explained to me and whom you can put in them (my Tactics and First Squad screens look like a hopeless mess of alphabet soup chunks to my untrained eyes). I know the manual describes the positions and the skills most important to each, but I need to know what those positions do, what they're responsible for, what the expectations are, that kind of thing. I need to know what constitutes a yellow card (I've seen several get pulled in my last couple of games, but only against my opponents), or a red card (haven't seen this one yet), things like that. I'm the kind of person who would much rather bury myself in a manual and devour all the info before I hit the first screen when it comes to this game.

There is an "unofficial" guide to Football Manager 2014 on Amazon, which is available for the Kindle, and I've thought about buying it, but frankly if it's like the manual and just assumes you know how to play in the first place, I don't want to waste the money on it.

Post Disclaimer:
KyzBP, you're going to hate me.

My next game was to be against Concord Rangers. So I guess they're a decent team - Wiki says "they won the Isthmian League Premier Division play-offs, thus winning promotion to the Conference South." Sounds important. :)

I went ahead and let my tactics/epic brilliant F-up ride for this game ride. You can see it here:

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1175.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr624%2FMichaelE6%2F579c7e1f57f9bf39cf420d63449034d7.jpg&hash=2491e53ab45cc9c07bf09875a9906c3183f83f70)

Note: This screen was taken post-game, which is why they look all tuckered out. Actually, all of these images were taken post-game, FYI.

Anyway. On to scene 26, which is a lovely scene with some smashing acting, in which Arthur discovers a vital clue. That clue being, Hey, Cheesefaire FC! Your goalkeeper is hurt! Funny thing! Just the DAY before my match with Concord Rangers, my F$%(#G goalkeeper decided to go and get injured and be out for ten days. Great timing, because he's been rather good on the field. Here he is:

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1175.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr624%2FMichaelE6%2F16f3315de9f88e1e665c64073aef7446.jpg&hash=a62aed05c8e162416b8fa95f1d8fe6f3e950adfa)

His technique, aggression, teamwork, pace, and stamina are all crap, but he communicates well, leads, kicks, has good reflexes, and...uh...he flies average?

The only other guy I have on my squad that can play goalkeeper is this lovely sample of humanity:

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1175.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr624%2FMichaelE6%2F209e70a378ff7ed6f644688b8a896569.jpg&hash=0e40044a7b9f2ce17afa93c2686c52dca73417a4)

So I've had to replace an asshole of a 20-year-old with a fat, middle-aged man that looks like he'd be better catching scones and biscuits than actual soccer balls. Footballs, excuse my Yankishness.

So when we hit the pitch, I fully expected to get my ass kicked.

KICKED, I mean.

Hard.

So...

yeah.

We won.

4-0.

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1175.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr624%2FMichaelE6%2Fdc2935d9d2bb4ac8d385eaf56c86b690.jpg&hash=a70976255d3e2ba10e1b51fd8b845ab89e8751b6)

Shaw, my middle-aged goalkeeper, actually made two rather amazing saves.

I even managed to see a red card get pulled on a guy. Sweet! ;D

So...hey, yeah, guess what?

Cheesefaire FC is on top!

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1175.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr624%2FMichaelE6%2F3a10da0c1b8206ab3b93e95fe1b1cf55.jpg&hash=9f3cea07a2e504dc3448096c2c08376f08bf7c89)

But...hey, KyzBP...I'm over budget on my weekly salaries. I'm not sure if the Board are going to care if I'm in first place of Skrill South...

But that can't last, right?

WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING RIGHT??!!?!?!!?!!11one

All I can say is congrats.  Maybe the handheld version is a little different but you're certainly making the most of it.  Shaw is a beauty by the way.

If I know this game like I think I know this game, you're going to hit a wall in the upcoming months.  The worst feeling is cruising along when suddenly the wheels come off and you have no idea how to get them back on.  :o

Btw, the FM14 handheld looks nicer than the FM13 version.  I bought the 13 version last year for my Kindle but I have a hard time getting into it after playing the PC version.

Keep up the good work and please tell me when you hit that wall so I can feel better about myself.

Thank you, sir. I really am not intending to rub it in...more accurately, to display my utter befuddlement as to how I'm pulling this off.

I'm guessing the pieces just happened to fall perfectly in this one instance and everything's running fine without any interference from me. It seems everything I actually attempt to do, I screw up, such as

(1) clearing out my lineup and figuring out how to put it all back together again
(2) learning that football players are a bunch of whiny little bastards that won't accept my signing offers
(3) trying to understand what I'm doing.

I did just sign Shaw to a 2-year contract and upped his wage to 120. I figure if he made 50 pounds a week and played that well he deserved a raise. As did the guy who did the hat trick for me in the Concord game; I signed him to a contract and gave him a raise also.

And yes...I completely understand where you're coming from when it comes to the whole wheels-falling-off thing. I'm bracing for it. Since I'm having such a hard time signing players, I'm really thinking I might find myself injured out of a game when I have to put a striker or a poacher (WTF is a poacher on the pitch?) in to protect the goal if they both get hurt.

I see Dover is in second place and they're the game after next. I'm eying that game for a loss, but as you say, it will come sometime soon.

As for the game - I almost didn't buy it because I read some people complaining about how the interface is "too simplistic" and not worth of the detail-laden PC version. Thus far, though, I think it's crazy detailed and actually fun. I might be having more fun if I knew what I were doing.

As long as you're having fun that's all that counts.

The 4-3-3 you're using is the tactic that took me up to the Premiership my one and only time.  If you have 2 forwards with good crossing skills out on the sides feeding a striker in the middle with good finishing skills you can go pretty far.  Unfortunately, I've never been able to replicate it in any of the versions that followed.  In my new game, because of you, I have my guys training to use the 4-4-3 soon.  They need a little more time with it though.

Keep it up, it's fun to watch.

Judge-  This years version is certainly more difficult.  Don't be surprised to find yourself near the bottom of the table.

It seems to me that you really have to understand the tactics and attributes and how they work together.  In my newest save, I'm in yet another horrible run.  I won my first game, tied the next, and now seem to be in a free fall.   This may be the game that occupies me most this year.  There seems to be a lot more going on under the hood and it's going to take some time to learn it.

I believe it definitely requires you checking players attributes, training, assigning correct training and positions and regular play for players - consistency.

These are all things I haven't done. What I wanted to do is go through the first season letting the players get some stats so I could see what's what. Unfortunately, what eluded me is a) how bad we could be and b) if I'm going to play like that then I would have to do the same for other players I brought in when I let some go!

So not the best start and if I keep my job, I'll be looking at getting rid of some old wood, bringing in new talent and hopefully establishing some consistency. I'll also be going into the player stats quite deep.

Maybe start with a higher level team Grim, and let the Assistant Coach take over most the duties until it starts to make sense.  It's how I learned to play Distant Worlds and I may have to do it a bit with this version.

I went into my game with Boreham Wood at 2-0-1 (I think that's supposed to be 2-1-0 for W-D-L, right?). They were a crap team so we easily handled them and added another win. It was really the game against Dover, which was rated 2nd overall in Skrill South, that I wanted to get to.

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1175.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr624%2FMichaelE6%2F4efd91222ddb8b7379eed38fb2d166d6.jpg&hash=eb620f0b204c12d9d42c0c8ad74479530a9a60ef)

I figured the other teams weren't much of a challenge and my luck carried me through those games. And of course it's early in the season too, and I have no idea how many games there are, so who knows how long that will last.

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1175.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr624%2FMichaelE6%2Ff834df60b64bd7f98e081cf223ea2a46.jpg&hash=0d41fc330ce935b5f8b0099e2ae7cd111c75a61d)

My team had some scratches here and there but I left them be. I especially left Shaw, my 42-year-old goalkeeper, in place, even though Lovelock, the original 20-year-old starter, was now healthy. I figured I should keep the faith and see how things go.

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1175.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr624%2FMichaelE6%2Fa68c41f279cf5a478a14d062fa0f09ec.jpg&hash=ff1b68c37560b498a32851974e567fb212687d39)

By halftime we were up 2-0 and Dover had a red card.

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1175.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr624%2FMichaelE6%2Fd3e9184885e5fd2c187de696c63b0801.jpg&hash=3e1c8f68138393eded8b69c7e653d28cd71f3941)

And by final whistle, that's the way it stayed. We beat Dover. I watched as Shaw deflected one shot and caught two others, preventing the game from being 2-3.

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1175.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr624%2FMichaelE6%2F3caade203cbc765dc06ffa7ccd729687.jpg&hash=1255a08eafefba8ea74490b3744e33297b2d9368)

One thing I've been noticing is how each game report states how we have "limited width" in the midfield. I don't know what this means, although I recognize it to mean things could be better.

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1175.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr624%2FMichaelE6%2F58c69d9bb0c8cf73715c3eac05a7042d.jpg&hash=30af284be5531a44f1e246d73d6c68d95e5bb707)

Still on top of Skrill South after six games (I'm losing track). Dover dropped a place and Eastborne Boro moved up from 3rd to 2nd.

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1175.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr624%2FMichaelE6%2Fff7cc41d3ab02a773ae7e3ba7b061d7c.jpg&hash=967934365b843d17534efb7596b509f0ed262c8b)

Next we're taking on Hayes & Yeading, which is just outside the playoff envelope at 6th.

Believe me, this version won't let you get 20 years in without knowing what you're doing.

I just started yet another new game.  I think I'll change things up a little.  I added the German Leagues Extension and am starting in the bottom of Germany.  The challenge is already on as I have almost no wage budget (I have to sign players on a per appearance basis) and the only players available to sign are mostly under 17.  This game just keeps on giving...

The real challenge will come in the off season when you have to start signing players.  Success or failure is then on your shoulders.

I chose to play the mode where you create your own club and therefore have to replace another club. Maybe it's a crutch for a new club, getting that much cash?

I knew my weekly was out of this world, but looking through my players, only a handful of them make 300 or so pounds a week with the majority around 100-150 pounds.

It's funny but being an American I can't get used to weekly wages.  In my games everything is set to annual.

The weekly wage thing seems to make sense, at least at this low level. I imagine most players here as being part-timers with 'real' jobs and families so they might not stick around long.

After seeing Banzai's screenshots, I'm thinking that I liked FM2013's interface style better.

I mean - does it still have a Tactics/Formation screen like this:

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.rtsguru.com%2Farticles%2Fimages%2F5000%2F4582%2F2012-11-19_00007.jpg&hash=5e254f7162bbc90b7577af2db89c15b0ca1b88db)

.. or did it all get dropped for the larger Lego block looking stuff?  >:(   Really.. there was much info and a lot you could adjust on just this one screen.  They didn't chop it down to multiple screens/tabs in order to make the (useless) background stuff larger did they?!  ???  I would be very disappoint.

Compared to this one:

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1175.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr624%2FMichaelE6%2F579c7e1f57f9bf39cf420d63449034d7.jpg&hash=2491e53ab45cc9c07bf09875a9906c3183f83f70)

I'm a bit worried.  Lego Football Manager?!

So I've never played any of these games but I have a question about some of those screenies:  the names and pictures of the players, are they real people?  It just seems weird you guys "managing" non-league teams and talking about your players and their performances.  Is there some brickie in Dover who's dissatisfied with the game's value of his tackling ability? And is the mugshot really of him?

Not taking the piss - I'm genuinely curious about this.

At the beginning of the game you're given the option of using real players of fictitious ones.  There are over 1000 real scouts who meticulously rate each and every player.  It's amazing how accurate these guys are.  The guys you see in the Skrill South are actual players just as the ones in the Premier League.  The mugshots are of the players as well.  There are "facepacks" available that contain 10s of thousands of player's smiling faces.

It's a great game.  This years version has been exceptionally challenging. >:(

What the heck is an "English FA Cup?" Apparently my Cheesefaire FC is to play Gloucester in it.

It's a competition

It's a rather prestigious cup and one that ANYONE can win....from the lowest divisions to the highest. It allows smaller clubs play against bigger clubs with the chance of kicking them out the cup and therefore getting a big scalp...PLUS - a major bonus - is the amount of money the smaller clubs make from playing some of the bigger clubs in their share of the gate receipts and TV rights. For example - a wee club with normally a few hundred supporters and their ticket prices...get to play Manchester United with 70k+ fans and the TV rights of playing such a prestigious team.

You must have some photos of the chairman in compromising positions.   I've been sacked in far better positions.  The question is can you improve during the next season and keep your job?

Keep us posted.

I don't want to know what positions your sack was in thank you kindly!

I'm definitely going to be looking deep into the squad...looking at weak points and building a better squad. The squad have a year under their belts now. I can see how their training has gone and their attitude. I can see match stats and go from there.

I think the key thing is to not let all the bad players go before I look and get better players (something I did in OOTP!)

The news reports two games previous to the end game reported my job as being in jeopardy. Now the board has come back to me with a mid table target...so I had better get my shit together.

Scrutiny will be the name of the game in the off season.

Sure, Wiki is, but so too are you guys.

I'd rather get my info straight from people whom know what they're talking about. Not that Wiki is incorrect here, but you guys save me from a lot of reading. :)

I did look up Gloucester...not the greatest of teams.

And I went and played that game (took screens but I won't bore you with them). We won 4-3. My goalkeeper got a frigging red card halfway through the game and got put to pasture. I did not have the goalkeeper I replaced as a backup (oops). I'm rather shocked we won, actually.

Got an e-mail after the game that said Shaw (my very successful to date 42-year-old GK) was banned for one match.

I gotta wonder what the hell he did. In the scoring animation, I saw his dot literally CHARGE the hell out of the box and into the middle of a mass of players.

I don't think you thought I was - but just to be clear I wasn't trying to come across condescending by my post - I of course you know about Wiki.

The "Wiki is your friend" is just something I put in front of a wiki link as lots of people have done so with me when I ask questions about baseball for OOTP. Something I picked up on the interwebs.

Like you though, I'd rather ask experienced players and people with knowledge of the game than read a big boring page.

The Wiki page has lots of interesting links about aspects of the cup (winners for example) and various tidbits about "Giant Killers" and the like

ALWAYS take a spare keeper. Players are totally rubbish in goal. If a keeper gets sent off, it's normally bad news for that team unless they have a sub keeper. I've seen many games over the years "in the bag" go south quick because all allowed subs were used and the keeper couldn't be brought on.

I'm not a huge fan of football, which is why this game has caught me off guard. I prefer rugby myself and would love a rugby sim.

I probably should have started there anyway.

I'm still playing this rather religiously, with breaks for Distant Worlds.

I just completed my most successful season on FM14 so far.  I added the English Lower Leagues (http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=192403796) and, for no reason other than I liked their crest and colors, selected a club called Bashley FC.  The club is fantastic, a true lower league gem.  Maybe the club was the mod designer's favorite or something but it's almost perfect with which to get a career started.  The club averages 4000 fans a game and the Board is very understanding.  I went 85k over my wage budget and they were very understanding.  I was able to win the Southern Premier League title, get a stadium expansion and, training and youth facilities improvement approved.

You'll have to pick up a few players but this team is a lot of fun so far.

yeah sounds to good to be true. the largest attendance they ever had was 3500 back in 87/88 and they are currently averaging 168 fans per game so 4k a game is way out of whack!  what is your wage budget per week? my skrill south team has a wage budget per week of 4.8k and the team is bleeding money.

I knew it was too good to be true.  Now I feel kind of dirty playing these guys.

The Board authorized me a wage budget of 675 per week but I ignored their limit and eventually had a budget of about 2300 Pounds a week.
Since my promotion, they've authorized a budget of about 6000 Pounds a week.  We've been moved to a temporary stadium this season while they increase our capacity.
I should have all the tools to blast through the Skrill South in one season.  It almost feels unfair now.

If it gets too easy I'll try to get hired by my fake team, which get relegated from the Skrill South last season.

I think I'm playing the "little brother" version of this game and will refrain from posting here again unless it's pertaining to the *real* PC version.

I just probably didn't pay that close attention when I started up (or actually more likely, had no idea what I was doing) and just got lucky to start a team that had halfway-athletic players instead of couch-and-pint jockeys.

I'm so demoralized right now.  I was 10 points clear at the top of the Skrill South with 4 games to go.  My team then takes a huge $#&@ and picks up 1 of a possible 12 points.  I then fall to second and lose the automatic promotion bid.  Next, I have to suffer through the agony of the playoffs.  Now, by agony I don't mean that it's boring or monotonous, just the opposite.  It's incredibly tense and nerve wracking, especially when your team just dropped 11 of 12 points.

So the first leg is away and we lose 2-0.  Now I'm angry beyond words.  It took me nearly a month of real time to get to this point.  The second leg is home and we manage to win 3-0 but lose our leading striker, left wing, and veteran DC but at least we get to the final playoff game.

The game is at home where we've been pretty solid all season.  We go down 1-0 before half.  Then we begin trading goals until the score is tied at 2 each.  In the process we lose another striker and a midfielder.  Because of substitutions I'm now entering extra time (overtime) with only 10 men on the field.  With about 5 minutes left in extra time their keeper (goalie) gives me an own goal.  Things are looking good and I have a smile on my face...temporarily.  Not a minute later we commit a foul near our net and they score on a penalty shot.  My keeper didn't even budge and now it's 3-3.  Extra time ends and we go into a shootout.

The first thing I notice is the players who were subbed out are my best penalty shooters.  Things were looking good though because after 5 attempts we had put all 5 past their keeper.  Unfortunately, they put all theirs past mine as well. :(   We ended up going 9 players in before one of my players finally missed.  Their players, on the other hand, would remain perfect as the last one lobbed a shot past my directionally dyslexic keeper and just like that I'll be enjoying the sights, sounds, and smells of the Skrill South...again.

I may need a Combat Mission break or something less stressful.

Tears the ass right out of your heart, doesn't it?

Never fails.. I nearly always lose early in the playoffs.  In any sports manager sims.  I can sim all season long with a decent team and game plan, get a nice winning record, and Murphy inevitably strikes in the form of losing my first playoff game.  Doesn't matter if I had been brutalizing everyone during the regular season or not.

I managed to win a couple Super Bowls with some, but those are few and very far between.  Probably with teams that I never expected to even reach the playoffs.

just got promoted from the skrill south. I am playing redditch which had just been promoted to the skrill leagues. took me 3 seasons to get em promoted. hopefully I can stay up in the skrill premier. first playoff game I got a guy sent off early and held on to a 2-2 draw. second game I won 2-0. final playoff game I got a guy sent off again(first 20 minutes) but managed to hang on for a 1-0 win and got the promotion. found a great tactic  from this page. I picked the first one on the list!

Nice find.  I've been using 2 tactics that I picked up off of steam.  Both have been working well.  My problem was injuries.  I tend to pick up a lot of Free Transfers.  The best ones are usually released due to being injury prone.  You'd think I'd learn by now.

Congrats on your promotion.  I'm hoping to exit the Skrill South this season.  With all the support the Board has given me there's no reason I shouldn't.

well my board supports me but I cant even get the field relayed. its condition is terrible! strangely enough they had to take a loan to add more seating to the stadium which is some kind of skrill premier rule. my payroll did go up a couple of thousand but I don't see them getting out of debt in the near future! if I do well this season I am going to try and get a job with a league 1 or 2 team. ive seen coaches with lower rep than I have getting those jobs so maybe I have a chance!

Nothing personal but I always find it weird listening to American descriptions of the "beautiful game".  Mind you,  I'm all in favour of multi-culturism, so it's great to see our trans-Atlantic cousins embracing the game.  In return, maybe I should have a go at OOTP 14 - I'm sure my AARs would raise an eyebrow or two Stateside.

got about 10-15 games in to my season and was being hammered by injuries. results were poor to say the least. applied for a couple of jobs in league 2 that had opened up and got a job with crewe. professional club with a transfer budget and 10x the weekly budget! sacked most of the staff and brought in new people. roster was in shambles and am rebuilding it for the tactics I want to be able to run. lots of spots filled by players on loan that end up leaving and wont renew their deals.  will be able to turn it around once I get em trained up but hoping I can keep em up for the rest of this season.

Been thinking of doing some Football Manager again since I've been in a sports manager sim mood lately.

I've been doing some FOF7 but I want something less focused on number matrices, better in-game action & with a far better UI.  However, I still have FM2013 and haven't picked up FM2014 yet.  So you guys will let me know if it goes on sale somewhere, yes?  :D

I may just run 2013 for a bit or do some OOTP14 in the meantime.  I can't bring myself to pay the full premium price for FM2014 when I don't watch the sport (rosters don't matter to me) and I've only played occasional stretches, so I can be patient.  However, it sounds like there are some small interface additions that would be nice in the newer version.

Looks like it hit it at the right time.

I just found Steam keys on sale for FM2014 at Amazon for $14.99 .. 70% off.  That beats the hell out of the $49.99 it's going for everywhere else!

I think it's a US only sale.  It ends tomorrow!

Also.. for my own and others' future reference, I'm gonna try the "Default Logos Megapack" from this link:

http://www.fmscout.com/c-files14.html?d=2

It seems to have 1) The most logos by far, and 2) No extra special logo graphical effects such as glossy, beveled, or rounded button shaped logos.

I had been using another in FM2013 but most of them aren't near as complete.  I may also get a skin but many of them are out because I don't like the lowered opacity background behind text.  I may grab the "Carbon" one if it's been redone for 2014 as that seemed to have a very dark background without too much clutter showing through.

I was just about to tell you about the Steam code.  You can't beat that price.  FM Scout is a good place for logos and such.  Also check out the Steam Workshop for extra stuff.  It's super easy to add content to the game through Steam.

I still want to d/l and install the official Dark UI.  But after a long period of jacking with logo mod issues last night, I just wanted to play for awhile.

For some dumb reason, FM2014's user/mod folder which is supposed to be created in your UserName\MyDocs folder wasn't working properly.  Because the game also created another one inside the Public\MyDocs folder and was trying to load the game files from both damn folders!

After digging around on the 'net, I found the answer.  Many other had the same problem and a few had figured it out.  I couldn't just delete the extra one because the program would just make another pair.  So I ended up having to put a copy of the 1.55 GB Logo mod into each folder before it would load all of the logos (there had been some that weren't loading due to the bug).

I've never seen such a thing before.  That's screwed up, man!   Anyway.. I'm all up and running with the hordes of Logos so hopefully I don't run into anymore modding issues.

I only mentioned the details in case anyone else ran into the same issue, here.  Having fun getting settled in with my sim team.  ;)

I've still to get back to this. After a dismal first season in charge of "can't remember", I am at the summer break stage where I need to sort my squad out. This is where I lose a bit of concentration with some games...mostly because I don't know what I'm doing.

But I will get back to it and have a better season. I just need to investigate options and choose hard core players and maybe get a half decent signing to put some goals in.

I would suggest starting with the team you have. So choose a team and let them play for a bit. Try some of your subs. I made very few changes and played with what I had because I wanted to get some stats under their belt.

Once you have a season done, you'll be able to assess your team better.

I always choose a lowly team Scottish First or Second Division. You don't have much money, but you can get free transfers and trials

Ok... can anyone recommend somewhere I can get facepacks and logos without feeling like I'm going to get my machine hacked?   FM Scout and SortItOutSI both ended up sending me to sites where I felt less than comfortable clicking on anything....  One tried to get me to install a download manager that was going to install all sorts of crap....   I get that these files are huge, but jeez....   I couldn't find what I thought I wanted on the Steam Workshop...

If you felt uncomfortable with those sites you can try this: http://www.fm-base.co.uk/forum/forum.php

I've downloaded stuff from all of those sites and never had a problem.  From now on though I'm sticking with Steam Workshop stuff.  It's just so much easier.

Thanks!   Speaking of steam workshop, did you find any comprehensive facegen packs on steam?

I looked at Steam and didn't see any comprehensive face packs.  There are face packs but nothing covering all leagues.  Steam Workshop seems to have just about everything else though.

That's because they want you to become a paid member.
For something like 10 quid a year you get access to their own Fast download server instead of having to use the free mirror crappy sites.

Its an interesting pre-order strategy for Football Manager 2015 this year......they have made the pre orders available for now, with delivery of the game in November some time.  That wasn't the odd part to me.....the odd part was that they don't plan to announce what the new features are until October.  Maybe that is typical for this game series, but I thought in the past they at least provided some high level information as what might be included.  I know the diehards will immediately pre order since they buy every version, but not knowing what is actually improved, not something I would look to do myself, especially since you don't get nothing very special with the pre order except access to the beta version 2 weeks before release.

To be honest, I have learned my own lesson to not pick this game up during the original release anyway, you can typically pick it up much cheaper a couple months later and by then hopefully the bigger issues would already be patched.

I've found that buying this game every other year seems to be the best strategy.  I can easily spend 2 years on each game and it seems like once something new gets introduced into the game it gets perfected (or greatly improved) the follow year.  I'll continue enjoying 2014 and plan on purchasing 2016.

Anyone in with Football Manager 15 yet?

Just curious. Surprised there isn't a discussion here, at least not that I've seen yet.

For the last few years, I get into a cycle that goes something like this....

1)  I get all excited about the game as they do the pre-sale hype...not a big Football fan, but the game looks so good that I over look that.

2)  I start to read beta/initial impressions and always seems like people find a lot of issues....therefore, I hold off on purchasing.

3)  Sometime around Xmas, usually goes on sale for what I believe is a reasonable price, so I jump in.

4)  I then realize people are still talking about the game needing a patch or two for the game to be complete...so I wait in playing

5)  I begin to dabble with the game, but quickly get overwhelmed with the options....what size should the DB be?  How many players? What countries?

6)  After getting frustrated (largely because I don't understand Football as well as I do American sports), I put it on the shelf, largely unplayed.

Rinse and repeat every year.....

I have it, like it, but it does need some work.

I've got 2014 and it's fine for my footballing needs. I haven't played it in a while anyway

This is a bit like OOTP though...a few changes justify a release. Sometimes they do - often, they don't - for me at least. This is one of those games I buy (sometimes) every 2nd or 3rd iteration...I don't need updated rosters

Not sure if I like all of them.

I generally don't buy FM until it's on a nice big sale, after having been out for awhile and patched a lot.  I may even skip this year since the changes didn't seem all that amazing.

Never ordered from this place before, but appears to be the best deal on FM2015 if you are interested in it....about 50% off, $24.
