Finished up Ag Center in Wasteland 2 tonight. Not sure why they couldn't defend themselves. By the time I finished looting the place, I found 3-4 sniper rifles, 2 M2 machine guns, a bren machine gun, and a couple of sub-machine guns, pistols, melee weapons, and a copious amount of ammo.

WHAT?  :o

Even if I did find that, I had used it all by the time I got to the sniper nutter with the 17 shots per turn!

Oh boy.  Apparently I know little about the Frankish Empire.   I have just skimmed Wikipedia.  I am enlightened. Not only was Kingship elective, but Charles Martel was never even King.  So the game is just being true to the period with all this turmoil.  I though I was going to fight Almoravids and Saxons and Lombards, but the average fighting seems to be Frank vs. Frank.

Charles never was, but Charlemagne was. What Wikipedia article did you read? I was able to find this:

From reading that I get the impression it wasn't a elective monarchy until much later. I'll alt-f4 before I accept elective monarchy in the 700's.

  Well, not elective in the HRE sense (Thanks, Pope!).  But in the Merovingian tribal sense in that the Big Men were expected to have some say in who was King.  At least that's what Wikipedia says.  sort of.  In the game, I run the Elective Kingship faction (as Dux Burgundiourum) and as long as Charlemagne keeps dumping lots of choice vassals my way, he can stay King.  If he hits Emperor, then I'm declaring Burgundy as a Kingdom and hope the Pope likes the Big Picture then.

You talking about the doctor in the valve control room?

Make sure you have 2-3 points into lockpicking, safecracking, and the computer science skills. Also don't spend skills points until you really think you need too. I saved most of my skills points until I would come across a lock or terminal I couldn't open, then I would put a point into the necessary skill. i turned several medium/hard obstacles into easy/medium difficulty. Unless you really need the points, wait until your team has low condition to level. When you call in, the team members who are leveling up will get restored to full health.

Conserving ammo by using melee helps as well. I would weaken a target with firearms, then move in and finish it off with melee. Don;t use the expensive 5.56 or 30-06 to kill the exploding pods, use the cheaper and more numerous 38.

I felt no guilt by exploiting the leveling system. First few times I tried I got mauled. So after I cleared the fields, I went back and did the two side air locks in the central complex that I had originally skipped. That was enough to level most of my team, I then went back and cleared the boss room of the bugs. I then used foreknowledge and pre-positioned my team. Melee right next to him, and the rest spread out so they all had a shot at him with limited chance of a friendly fire incident.

So far surviving (mostly because no one cares to come get me, and no one nearby seems to have the ships anyway) as the Last Nestorian King in CK Charlemagne this weekend.

I expect I'm going to spend the next few game years saving up enough money to put in a shipyard and its galleys, so I can pack up troops and send them to fight the Muslim invaders who pushed our kind Nestorians out of Arabia and Syria and Persia etc.

has anyone tried either the Civil War or Great War mods for Napoleon Total War?

I tried the Great War mod for NTW and the Civil War mod for ETW.  Both of them are good although the Great War mod tends to crash for some unexplained reason after a certain number of turns have gone by.  How many turns seems to vary with each case reported over at twcenter.  For me it crashed in early 1917 but I tried resuming on an autosave and got around the crash.

Civil War is more stable.  Never really finished my campaign though so I don't know what happens as you play on.

Both of these mods are well polished but definitely not completely finished products.  Most of what's missing though are minor things like the unit description screens, naval unit models, and some place holder graphics on some of the unit cards.

Been a while since I played CK2 and I have none of the DLC.  Having said that, it's definitely worth giving it a go.  You get really invested in your king and the story that unfolds.  All the talk of the new Charlemagne DLC has got me thinking I should fire it up, but I never seem to have enough time.

  As others have pointed out, the game is more of a story-generator than a sandbox survival game.  There is a tutorial in 2.2.  Spain in the 1400s I think.  I would start there.

  The Charlemagne period might have some nastier surprises than other eras.  The Pagan German tribes can suddenly unleash very big forces.  Big Chuck the Wise and I, Theodoric of Burgundy, barely got back to Christendom alive after a huge Saxon uprising in, well, Saxony (which is sort of everywhere from Frisia to Bavaria).  Thanks to some late-arriving Swabians, Lombards and Bavarians the Saxons were beaten for the 3rd time.  I went back to Burgundy to make some choices about gardening since my vassals were complaining about having been in the field for too long.  Ya gotta hand it to Chuck, he can deal out some rough early medieval justice -- though even I am surprised how many people I have in my dungeons these days.  My half-brother, of course, and a selection of Lombards and Amienians (from Amiens).

  Anyway.  I would start with the tutorial in version 2.2.
