The figs and table belong to some buddies of mine. We did an all day session on Saturday as a birthday bash for one of the guys (the one who hosted the whole thing).

Very impressive Mirth.  I played some ACW mini's a couple of weekends ago and had a great time.  In fact, it sucked me in to the rabbit hole and I wound up blowing more money than I really should have on mini's that now need to be based and painted.  It never ends....

One of the guys I play against regularly wanted to give his copy of Paths of Glory a try.  I'd never played it before and he'd only tried twice so it was a bit of a learning experience.  (Note to self, when playing as the Central Powers, don't leave the border to Italy guarded by just a few corps of dodgy Austro-Hungarians.  Also, drive the war track up as early as possible to get the better cards out.)

It seems decent although I think the cards dictate play too much.  I did well in France and was able to take Verdun, Nancy, Sedan, and Liege by the Winter of 1914.  That ground down the German army pretty badly though and the dirty French were able to reinforce Paris.

I got slapped silly by the Russians though and they punched through the Austro-Hungarians like they weren't even there.  The Middle East was a stalemate as was the Balkans.  We weren't able to finish before the gamestore closed up shop for the day and booted us out but it looked like it was going to be a race to see if the Germans could take out France before the Russians threatened Berlin.

It reminds me of Twilight Struggle but with a lot more granularity.  I'd like to have another crack at it now that I'm more familiar with the rules.

I saw someone's video AAR of Paths Of Glory recently.  Looked like fun without large stacks of counter doom.

You're limited to a maximum of 3 units per stack.  It can still get a little cluttered once you throw in trenches, besieged markers, and captured VP markers though.

The game does a good job of providing a lot of historical flavour but the card system causes issues in that you're prevented from acting how you'd like simply because you don't have a certain card in your hand.   I got steam rolled by the Russians simply because I never got a good card that would allow me to replenish Austro-Hungary's depleted units.  This is one of the reasons I'm not a fan of card driven systems.  Too gamey for my tastes.

Yep, it the old one from West End Games.  I really dig the board layout.  I have not purchased the new version, I went and purchased the older one for a relatively cheap price and the game is in great shape.  I sleeved the cards even though they are odd sized, but I used a heavy sleeve.

Yep, it the old one from West End Games.

I was digging around a few days ago and happened upon my old West End Soldiers game.  And Bloody 110 (not WE) although that one had seen far better days. 

Don't think I'd seen either of those for almost two decades.  Probably longer in the case of Soldiers.  Always thought it was a rather weird game back in the day, but I suppose that was due to it's heavy focus on morale & willpower which I had never seen to such an extent in other rules.  ???

I have recently started playing this as well.  Overall, great as game, but agree that the cards make it somewhat "gamey."  Still, I highly recommend it...I am having a great time playing it.

I'd probably still think it an odd system, but I recall revisiting it back in the mid 90s and getting some enjoyment out of it in a head-to-head game against a buddy.

PanzerEast's mention of a WEG wargame reminded me of it.  I owned very few of those back in the day (the other probably being Panzer Leader) so they were a bit of a rarity for me.

I had a fair number of WEG board games.  My problem was convincing anyone from my gaming group to give them a try.  I was into Squad Leader.  They wanted to play Talisman or Cosmic Encounters or other such games.

I had:

Soldiers
Pax Britannica
Air Cav
Fire Team
Star Wars: Star Warriors

And a U.S. Civil War game but I can't recall the title.
