I always found he face sucker to be quite icky. And it folds nicely into the oral rape theme noted by Pratt.

I would thank/blame Geiger for that theme, but the writer(s) seem to have been going on themes like that from the beginning -- he was apparently hired to help fit the theme.

Alien: nothing if not a super-deluxe upgrade to 50s horror sci-fi, except without any of the fun of those movies.  ::) Certainly a valid artistic goal, but one reason why I'll always like Aliens much better.

The Turner Classic Movies channel had a night of 50's classic Sif-Fy movies on about 2 weeks ago. Earth vs the Flying Saucers, It Came From Outer pace, and a couple of others.  Took me back to some good times. Was that really what America looked like back then?

Black & white? Parts of it. America didn't become fully colorized until 1971.

Because Alien owes a lot to that film.

Actually it owes more to Dark Star than anything else, Alien being the film that (writer) Dan O'Bannon wanted to make in the first place.  But none of this should detract from the fact that Alien is, in my not at all humble opinion, one of the finest horror films ever made.  Scott even considers the theatrical cut to be more or less the director's cut and doesn't think, even after all these years, he'd change anything.

True, but Dark Star wouldn't have been shown in a 50s sf marathon. ;)

Oh, certainly, no doubt. Taken altogether it arguably ranks among the finest films ever made, period.

But if I feel like watching something Alien-y, I'll watch Aliens almost every time. It's just more fun than any of the other films, without sacrificing quality.

And yet, there's a "director's cut". ;) With six minutes less running time than theatrical, so that still kind of fits the observation. (I just checked my Blu Anthology set.)

Me too.  Its format lends itself better to repeated viewings in my opinion.  I'll watch Alien if I'm in the mood for a sci-fi horror film, but I'm more frequently in the mood for something more gung-ho.

The great thing about Alien is it gets both the sci-fi and the horror right.
