These are the descriptions I'm referring to...

QuoteThe first-ever open world Star Wars video game, the highly-anticipated Star Wars Outlaws, launches today. The third-person role play game (RPG) focuses on a Han Solo-inspired scoundrel, Kay Vess, and is set between the events of the 1980 hit The Empire Strikes Back and 1983's Return Of The Jedi.

...and when I see "open world", I think that imparts some ability to customize a character. That is on me though. Again, I'm not knocking SW: Outlaws for what it is. I'm more disappointed about what it is not and what I hoped it would be.

I'm hoping that the game breaking bugs are fixed and that MAYBE somehow someway there can be some modding. Then I'll pick it up for $15

J. Michael Straczynski, creator of Babylon 5, has a very entertaining rant somewhere about how the only sci-fi character that most entertainment and marketing executives can identify is Han Solo and that therefore when they start telling you how x character is just like Han Solo and that's why this piece of media is good, you should run.

PS5 version here.

It made me want to play Cyberpunk 2077 for it's openness and variety.

I've only played up to the point where I get some special card to get off the planet...all that was pretty boring really. It was only the first 30 minutes or so...but the opening of a game should grab you, right?

Also, once you get that card - you are forced into a "sneak" mode. No way of just saying "I'm going to blast my way out"...sneak and if you're seen, you get caught...game over. tbf I knew that - I had heard that on a review and I expected it - but I didn't think it would annoy me. NEWSFLASH - it really does!! And there's apparently lots more of that. Shit - even Cyberpunk has sneak missions, but if you get spotted, it all kicks off!

So honestly - I was bored enough to switch it off. I am only 30 minutes in so... :Nerd:

I'll let you know when I get further - if I can be arsed being forced to sneak through this mission. One thing I'm not good at is persistence.

I do like a good story though - so if that keeps going, then it might save it for me. Historically I've finished games (good or bad) with a great story...Mafia, Mafia II, Max Payne, The Last of Us, Far Cry 3, Titanfall 2...(just realised they were all great games too...but I'm sure I've played a bad one through with a great story...Far Cry 5 rings a bell)

Given what I have seen already, some of those negative reviews, whilst very "vinegary", had some truth to them.

For anyone waiting on a sale - given my fist 30 minutes - wise one you are.

BUT - did I mention I'm only 30 minutes in?

I'll come back with more at some point

Yeah the first mission being "fail is spotted" is baffling as I haven't seen any other such missions since. Not sure if I would have pushed through if I wasn't into the setting. There have been a couple "fail if alert is raised" missions but those aren't THAT bad. You are free to shoot up people as long as nobody lives long enough to raise the alarm.

JudgeDredd

Played a bit more of it yesterday and actually enjoyed it more.

Combat is pretty simple, but I don't care about that. As I mentioned, I am terrible with persistence, so when a game challenges me too much, I often put it down and walk away. So I'm happy with easy combat. I can't remember if I changed the difficulty setting, but if I did, I would have put it on easy.

Sneaking around seems to be missing things that I personally would have liked - like dashing between cover and peeking round your cover...unless I've missed how to do that in this, because all I seem to do when peeking round cover is get spotted.

Another weird decision - as has been mentioned - is when you're on the speeder, having to use the "dead eye" targeting system. You have to get off your speeder to engage in normal combat.

Overall, now, had a decent time playing last night. It's still no 2077 or Mafia - but I just don't think it needs to be. It's got Storm Troopers and Star Wars characters and there's a definite Star Wars feel going on.

This game reminds me of of starfield from last year, where everyone thought it was going to be the end all be all space game and it was just meh...fallout in space.  Still was enjoyable and worth a playthrough, which is probably what outlaws is.  Starfield won't reach it's full potential till next year and beyond when the bigtime mods are finished.

Not sure if outlaws will have the mod support that starfield will have as thats not traditionally a Ubisoft thing, Ubi wants to paywall you with content.

From what I've heard there will be little mod support for Outlaws, but who knows.

I haven't finished it - not at all, but in the bit I've played, I kind of feel like this
