So, what I'm getting for all this is that Wargame: AirLand Battle is good and I should get it?

I wasn't gripped by Wargame: Escalation, does this one change and improve a lot to make it different? One thing I heard was notable was the removal of that god-awful unlock system for unit selection.

If you did not care for Escalation, I'm inclined to think that you wouldn't care for AirLand Battle either.

You are probably right. Escalation was just too freaking hard. I wish W:ALB had a demo.

I am struggling to like this game. I'm sure there will be a Zen moment when I figure it out and get good at it, but right now I pick some units and get my ass kicked. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

Bloody hell...I couldn't help myself!

I was convinced I wouldn't like it because it looks frenetic - but I convinced myself I'd like it because of the era (I do love the era)... >:(

What's the score with this game? Does it "need" to connect to a server after login? Because I've been waiting for about 15 minutes now and it just says "Loading..."

JudgeDredd

Thanks LB, that is enough to dissuade me from getting it. I'm no slouch at RTS, but Wargame: Escalation kicked my butt every time. So I gave up, because I could never unlock any new units.

Wargame is like Rock Paper Scissors...and I'm coming into the game with a leafblower and a potato peeler...

I really REALLY enjoy the game, and I like that it is hard.  I'm learning to use smoke for cover, the value of ground troops, and inexpensive anti-take missile vehicles, etc.  I am, however, still losing a lot  :)

I finally got this one and the campaign is disappointing. I think it has all the tools it needs to be fun, but a couple of core mechanics are really messed up. I think the issues are patchable, I am looking forward to seeing how they fix it. A couple of minor changes probably won't cut it, but I will hold out hope that they fix it.

I could try out multiplayer, but that is not the reason I bought the game. In multiplayer it just becomes another RTS game where you never have time to zoom in and look at the action. I think that is a huge shame. Why take the time to make beautiful graphics when the game is so fast paced that you will rarely see them?

I really think the SP campaign can be something, but I am putting the game down until I can try out the patch (whenever it comes).

what issues have you come across?

I'm curious too.  The game is challenging in a way I haven't seen an RTS be in a very long time.  The AI still goes after my command units a little too much, I do hope that gets corrected.

The 10v10 multiplayer has been a phenomenal experience.  It really feels like I'm acting out something in Red Storm Rising.

Do you guys get used to the speed? That doesn't bother you? I can't follow what's going on...as soon as I move to contact, it's just a series of explosions for a few seconds and I lose.

^^ This is exactly what happens whenever I play Dom3 multiplayer, and that game goes on for weeks at a time with days between moves.

So I feel reasonably confident I won't have any particular problem playing W:ALB. The speed at which I lose might even be refreshing.  :D

The initiative and morale system doesn't work very well as currently designed. You have to take the same zones over and over again with fewer and fewer forces. Its a strange dynamic and it really bogs things down to the point of extreme boredom.

Yeah, that is problematic. If you don't win the first encounter you're probably stuck for good. Have you tried multiplayer?

it never seems to be an issue in 10 v 10, youve got the guys on your left and right to pick up any slack you cant cope with - as some have said already its a bit rock, paper, scissors - but thats the fun of the game - getting smashed by arty then bring in the air assets, if he has AAA theyre very fragile, arty them then bring in the air power, if he has air bring the AAA yourself
