Agree with Mirth. Very good film but not great. Typical super hero story, very predictable and the language included one, "Whore" and one "Bitch" but nothing worse than that. The movie shines in the usual Marvel presentation being very well done, funny, sad at times and the characters are immediately likable. Lots of action and great rock & roll, and no super hero crossovers from the other movies. I'd give it a solid 7 out of 10. O0

Saw GotG with Dad this afternoon; language is a bit on the hard side for PG-13, but not as bad as, say, E.T. or Back to the Future or many Spielberg films  :D (Those were different times. Come to think of it, the film often aims for a late 80s vibe.)

Issue #2 included Rocky Balboa as a member of the GI Joe team

Going back to this for a minute: there's a current XBoxOne advertisement (running over at the Escapist this past week for example, so I got to hear it A LOT) which sounds exactly like a Sly impersonator acting as Rocky training someone with dialogue which sounds like it comes from that Joe Handbook card! I've never seen Rocky 5 or 6, but I kind of doubt it comes from either of those movies because the speaker seems to be addressing multiple people and I'm pretty sure Rocky is training only one person in each film...  ???

Just came back from watching this.  I hate sounding like a blurb, but "rollicking good fun" is the phrase that most immediately comes to mind.  The 70's soundtrack did get a bit wearing on me now & then, but that's about the worst critique I can come up with off the top of my head. 

Definitely a solid film.  I wouldn't say it was great, but it was certainly good.  Worth watching. 

safe for an 11-year-old?  Bayonet Jr has expressed and interest, and I'd rather see that one than another butchering of TMNT

He should be just fine, especially if you're with.  As others have said, there's a bit of language, and some violence beyond what you normally see in a superhero flick, but nothing too over-the-top.

I just saw it today and quite enjoyed it. A genuinely funny superhero movie.

Marvel can pull in almost $100 million for the opening weekend of a movie featuring characters most people have never heard of. DC claims that they can't conceive of a way to make a profitable Wonder Woman movie.

Rather than doing something useful like working on Game 2 of my AAR that I won't shut up talking about, I decided to spend tonight working up a post analyzing the mystery of Peter Quill's new-for-the-movie-series father, based on an interview comment from James Gunn that seemed super-strange.

But it turned out such a long post, I set up its own thread -- thus giving Grogheads the benefit of webcrawling spider food searches if I happen to be right (since I haven't seen this theory yet anywhere on Google searches)!  ;D

Back on-topic (of not talking about that particular theory  :D ) : soooooo, if the Sakarans were hired by Ronan to go after the stone, that's probably a key explanation for the rumors that Marvel is planning a Planet Hulkish storyline crossing over with Guardians 2 after Age of Ultron (thus bringing Thanos to Earth for Avengers 3).

Not direct confirmation, of course; maybe not even strong inductive weight. But interesting -- there are a ton of minor Marvel races they could have pulled from (and did apparently pull from originally before running into rights issues, I expect from the Fantastic Four package if not the X-Men -- both have long-running connections to relatively minor alien races, and the FF rights were the reason we couldn't have nice Skrulls in the first Avengers movie.)


But is there a little more confirmation? Maybe! -- one of the totally random-looking Easter Eggs in the film is the hot chick on Star Lord's ship at the beginning of the movie! Who is that?

That's Bereet, a quite "spacey" intergalactic artist whose main claim to fame is appearing in random issues of The Incredible Hulk in the 70s and 80s! (And a few times since then.) She has something of a crush on the Hulk and likes to make films of her fictional adventures with him, though also a legitimate documentary eventually; she became his lover at one point after Bruce's wife left him.

Very interestingly, while in the released film she only wears the shirt Peter was abducted in years ago as a boy (which is itself rather creepy!), there are production photos showing her wearing, not the Flash Gordony space bikini drapes she wears in the comics, but an outfit much more like a Grecian warrior.

I strongly suspect there was a dropped subplot where she was going to play a much more important role, as she can be seen in the released film keeping a suspiciously close eye on Peter's conversation with Yondu while trying to look vapid whenever Peter turns around. But this behavior isn't followed up on.

I kind of got the feeling Thanos would turn out to be Quill's father because of the several references made that he "Fathered " children all over the galaxy including the green good girl and the metal-faced bad one. That made sense to me about his father being a jerk. If I had seen anybody listening to Rock & Roll, I would've jumped on that. Great piece Jason.

It could be connected to Drax's true heritage (should they follow the comics). Thanos has been to Earth, and killed Drax's family.  He could have knocked- up Quill's mom, or maybe it was Ronan. Or maybe it really will be Jason/J'son, and all the chatter is a diversion.

If Thanos is Quill's father, does this turn into a Star Wars re-tread? That smile he gave at the end of Avengers when Earth was mentioned looked like a "Great Lay Memory" smile to me.

Wife & I saw GG last night.  Very entertaining. Movie does not require understanding the characters or the fictional universe to enjoy the movie.
One of the funnier superhero movies ever made.

I found that the Starlord character carried the movie with help from the racoon and the tree.

I've liked several other superhero group movies better than GG (Avengers, several of the X-Men movies, and the latest Captain America which had Black Widow and the Falcon as well as Cap).  But I enjoyed GG and I'm not a big movie goer.

If you want a fun, diverting, comedy-super hero movie that does not require being a comic book geek - then go see it.
