wow...that looks good...too bad beta didn't have solo play, unless it has a skirmish you can play against AI.  JH, any chance that exists right now?

Negative.  Unfortunately the beta is MP only.  You can launch a MP game solo, but then there will be no combat. You can basically just order units and move them around.

Bummer...but thanks for letting me know....for $29, still might be worth it.

I'm definitely picking this up at some point.  I am waiting a bit now, though, because of the lack of an AI for SP skirmishes, and the fact that I understand there are more than a few bugs.  In other words, this is a real beta and just a publicity beta.   :)

The original game was worth $29. I suspect this one will be, too.

My main complaint about EE was the single player mode, which appears to be addressed in ALB. The single player campaign looks like it will play out similiar to the later versions of the Close Combat campaign system. Not a bad way to go. A good single player experience should snag them a lot more sales.

I agree.  But I confess to being more than a little concerned about the final state of the SP campaign seeing how there has been no further details about it.  I hope what finally arrives doesn't disappoint.  According to Steam, Wargame ALB releases on May 22 - that gives Eugen four weeks to pull it all together.   :(

... will there be a slider/option for the overall game speed in SP ? ;)

I remember EE like: build a bunch of units, rush it somewhere, units get destroyed, spam another bunch,  again and again ... to much information to compute (for me ... i start to feel old) at the same time rushing down on me, the units move to fast and die to fast on the virtual battlefield for to get real(life) strategy / tactics to the work... i would have liked to play it at 66% game speed, or so

now we get 6 brands (role on the battlefield) of fast movers too.  which look great in the track-my-unit videos... but I didn't even had time to marble at the nice graphics zoomed-in when there was only tanks and choppers in EE...

i have to get me more infos on the changes from EE

well, i am still on the fence (and i like the price reduction on final product  ;))

Just bought this for my 14 year old on Steam.. I'm still wondering where he get's all this money in his bottomless Piggy Bank.. he says Easter, Xmas.. I'm like we got Candy for Easter as kids!!!! From the Easter Bunny, no one else... no grandparents throwing money at ya!!.. lol.. good thing he's so rich my wife is constantly 'borrowing' from his Piggy Bank.. Instead of him giving me 29 bucks.. my wife owes him 30 less... :P

I am a big fan of the series and the new additions in Airland look fantastic.  The new campaign mode looks like a lot more fun and a ton of more deck building options.  If anyone is interested in some easy going matches, let me know.   My Steam moniker is the same as my Grogs account  name.

+1.  This, and the way the game unlocks units rather than giving you access to the historical OOB is why I didn't play more of EE.  Sure does look nice though!

It was fun for a while (NATO campaign) until the AI unit spam in the Russian campaign.
How ironic, Soviets do the unit spamming, not NATO.
I always lose in MP so I stopped playing.

Eugen has published a short guide to the AirLand beta to help new players get oriented:

http://www.focus-files.com/WargameAB/WARGAME-AB_BETA_INT.pdf

I haven't jumped in yet (I'm trying to wait for the skirmish AI to be enabled so I can practice without embarrassing myself  ;D), but this should prove helpful when I do.

Speaking of the skirmish AI, one of the devs said this:

Quote"Is coop skirmish vs AI going to be available at release? "

Yes it will be available. In the lobby, Open/Close slots will turn into Open/Close/Add AI, so that any slot can be turned into an AI, which is available in 4 difficulties. To be perfectly clear, you could play a game like this:

Team 1:
- player 1
- IA medium
- IA easy

Team 2 :
- player 3
- IA hard

Also, the AI has evolved a lot since W:EE.

Sounds good.

+2 -- my experience exactly.  There's a lot I like about Wargame EE in principle -- I think Eugen put together a quality game here.  But it just plays way too fast for me.  On the "Challenging-Fun ---- Challenging-Stressful" spectrum, it tilts too much toward the stressful end.

I guess the ol' reflexes aren't what they used to be...

I agree with the need for a slower game speed and a proper pause function. I'd also really liked to see a bit more realistic infantry combat model implemented in the sequel.

USMC Battlegroup in the OOB...what else could be better?  That's a rhetorical question, do not answer.

I'm still figuring out how to use the fixed wing aircraft.  I managed to get some Tomcats to engage a few Soviet helos.  The skies were lit up by AAA as the F14s began to loiter, and that was pretty flipping cool. Then some Migs showed up and the game was on.  I've also noticed the commies using heavy artillery a lot, including laying down smoke.  it all looks very impressive on the field, and makes the battles very hectic and confusing.  A lot of guys won't like this feeling of panic, but I think it adds to the authenticity.

The problem I have with it is figuring out how to control all my troops at once......the game is so good to look at and intense, I find myself staring at a section of the battle watching it like a movie, but totally neglecting all of my other troops elsewhere:(

So.. does the AI stand up well?  Or does it just zerg you with extra production bonuses?

While I didn't purchase Wargame: EE and I'm not all that big on RTS, this new one is definitely pulling me.  The cold war period and the plethora of hardware represented in the game is a big draw.

I may pick it up soon if it's single-player is in a better situation than the previous one.  My concern is that the game will be released in under two weeks, and they're now only adding in the AI for skirmishes on the beta.  ???  Does that mean there won't be much single-player at release?  Could that entail a later expansion or yet another release next year that has it?

I've only had time to try four or so AI skirmish matches, so these thoughts are preliminary at best.  But having said that, here is what I noticed:

1) The AI doesn't spam aircraft. I was a bit worried about this but I noticed that it only used aircraft to help an attack succeed rather than just keeping aircraft aloft for no apparent reason. However, one person has mentioned that on "very hard" AI did spam aircraft.

2) The AI uses combined armed tactics. I have encountered recon, infantry, armor, light armor and helicopters. It also recons as it only seems to launch a full attack after doing some recee.  What is more, the AI picks its own deck, so what units you encounter will vary greatly, which is nice.  It keeps you on your toes as you don't know whether to prepare for an armored thrust or an airmobile assault.  If we get the ability to design decks for the AI use, so much the better (but there is no word on this)!

3) It didn't spam artillery. Like with aircraft, it only seemed to use arty when it identified one of my defensive positions and needed to press an attack home.

4) It uses smoke! This was a pleasant surprise since a lot of AI won't use non-lethal means in a game. This AI actually seemed aware of the benefits of concealing an advance.  However, at times it seemed to drop smoke on odd locations.  Regardless, it used it!

5) The AI made use of supply trucks to keep its vehicles fueled, albeit, it seems to leave them exposed.

Now, these comments concern the "easy" and "normal (or is it "moderate"?) AI.  I can't speak to "hard" or "very hard" as I haven't tried them yet.

My games have also been restricted to 1 v 1 (me vs the AI), and me and an Easy AI versus one Moderate AI.  I always lose against the Easy AI, but when I am teamed with an AI and compete against a Moderate AI, I have won 1 out of 3 games.  Not much better.   :D  But I find it helps to have a wingman take one flank so you can concentrate on the other.  It is nice to be able to configure a game like this.  BTW: your AI teammate does communicate with you when on the same team.  It places flares to "attack here" or "defend here".  However, I've noticed that it can occasionally go flare crazy and place them all over the map, even on your own starting sector!    ;D  Needs a little work.

As for the SP campaign, it is supposed to ship with a seemingly deep Total War like strategy game with real time battles.  Unfortunately, they haven't released any more info on it since ALB was announced...something that makes me worried.  I don't know if they are just saving the best for the last week of pre-release hype, or if they intend to add it post release (which I would prefer to a half finished SP campaign).  I suppose it is also possible that they game might be delayed by a few weeks to finish it - but if so, they are going to have to announce this real soon.  I guess we'll see, but seeing how attentive Eugen has been in listening to the community, plus the nice AI they have delivered for the SP skirmishes, I suspect that when the campaign arrives it is probably going to be pretty good.  Here's hoping.

Today, they released another vid, this time on deck creation:

The only area of the game that I am a bit disappointed in is the infantry - it is heavily abstracted.  I was hoping for infantry along the lines of what you find in Achtung Panzer or Theater of War, but instead it is little different than the infantry you found in World in Conflict.  We've been talking about this on the forum and the consensus seems to be that the infantry is being handled like just another vehicle; they don't feel different from, say, a tank.  They fight fast and and die quickly.   Hopefully this is just a limitation of the beta.

My experiences with the beta are generally positive, but, again, it bears mentioning that my experience is limited to 5 MP games, and 4 or 5 AI skirmish games.  That's not a lot to go on.  I like what I see, but will I still like it after I played it a bunch more?  I kinda think so since the game's foundation seems solid, but it is really too early to tell.  The SP campaign will be crucial as I imagine just playing MP or skirmishes is going to get stale quickly.

So, stay tuned.  If you haven't pre-ordered yet, I would wait for the full release as it is only another 10 days.  There seems to be a lot to like about ALB, but this wouldn't be the first game killed at the last minute by a rushed release or an inscrutable last minute decision on the part of a dev.   ::)

Thanks for the rundown Rooks!

Sounds like it's shaping up nicely.  I think I'll wait until after release to see what's going on.

The new TW-style singleplayer campaign would definitely sell me on it but I also have reservations about how finished it is.  I'm afraid that could end up being another full-priced sequel next year instead of making it into this one (in which case, I'd probably wait).

I'm afraid it's not because that's exactly the same way how the infantry worked in Wargame: European Escalation. But I think that's a minor problem, the overall impression about the great is really great in my opinion. I've played a few 10v10 matches so far and I was skeptic at first that it would be a huge cluster**** but in fact it's not. The  frontlines are clearly distinguishable and the immersion of a huge battlefield is there.  The game isn't micro intensive, which I like, and I think you got just enough time to keep an eye of and control your units because they're usually concentrated on a relatively narrow part of the large front. I highly recommend at least the multiplayer experience. :)

I agree on the 10v10!  They were a lot of fun, and it was nice to play with such a big crowd as a newb since victory or defeat doesn't weigh so heavily on your shoulders.  However, they really need to do something about the unbalanced matches where you have 15 NATO and 5 WP!     :D

I still get my a$$ handed to me by the AI in skirmish mode...on easy.  I just can't keep up with it. In one particular battle I found the AI to be spamming helos, they just kept coming, and my force was pretty armor heavy so I got torn apart.

I'm glad to read rook's impression about fuel trucks, because in European Escalation, the AI did not seem to play by the same rules of supply and this made the SP campaign extremely difficult. Hopefully, this too has been addressed his time around.

Anyway, losing is still fun, but so far I have been unable to match the AI even on the easiest level of difficulty.

Yeah ... I liked the game a lot - great looks and a great idea - but its just way too fast for me ... I wish there was a way to slow it down ... the AI aint great but its just impossible to keep up with it. They have all these little details you see popping up in relation to the units and damage etc  -  but things happen so fast its meaningless.

Such is my experience with EE.  I don't think I have it in me to play the game.  It's a shame, because on paper it's a great game, with probably the best game engine I've ever seen in an RTS.

It's not that bad really, at least in the larger MP matches. I can imagine 1v1 could be a bit stressful though. You just basicly move your troops into position and they do their job or then they don't, no need for tedious microing and kiting like for example in Company of Heroes. I'd say you need to do much more clicking if you bring that girl home...

...didn't had time to look deeper into it yet.
of course i got W:AlB the day after my first cautious posting :-[  ...when even the skirmish AI was not unlocked.
Knowing me, i wouldn't had resist in the longrun anyway, sober or wasted  ...so at least i wanted to cash in the sale benefit  ;)

IIRC from W:EE the stats would be edible? , so a simple overall parameter mod of the dadabase entries:
a) the ground speed value of all units is reduced to, lets say 80%     (well not to much, it should not look like slow-mo so)
b) the 'accuracy' of all weapons is slightly decreased                         (forces degrade slower)
c) the resources regain per minute is reduced                                  (a unit is more 'precious', so tactics should win over spam)

should turn it into more a wargame if it doenst already work out of the box

Hey, Mike. Your English is normally superb, so I offer this merely as something to improve your already outstanding mastery.

"Edible" means "able to be eaten." For example, "Are these mushrooms edible or poisonous?"

I believe the word you were looking for is "editable." Slight difference in meaning ;)

I've been there, done that.

I have a somewhat foggy memory of my first holiday in Germany as a student. As Christmas approached, of course we were all excited to get back home. One evening we were in a bar, and as Germans often do, I found some of my buddies at a table with some other locals. In this case a couple of old ladies. I joined the conversation and beer. I was still learning the language so some of the conversation was beyond me. The ladies were delighted to have a (questionably) handsome young man join them for part of the evening. One kept going on about how pleased she was to have an early Christmas ham.

I just figured the odd language use was a local dialect or something. Only later did I realize the error was wholly mine. "Shenken" means "gift." "Schinken" means "ham."   ;D

And a dev confirmed that there will be 30 maps in the campaign, one for each province.

The release date has slipped to May 30:

QuoteWargame AirLand Battle, the spectacular real-time strategy game for which the official and definitive release date is May 30th, will surprise players with its brand new Dynamic Campaign system, that we are pleased to unveil for the first time with a series of 4 screenshots!

Willing to make something very different from the solo campaigns of Wargame European Escalation, Eugen Systems made great efforts to offer Wargame AirLand Battle an exciting campaign, both innovating and fascinating. As you can see on today's screenshots, you will first handle in this campaign your army and your battle groups, on a huge strategic map representing Europe: ordering movements, asking for reinforcements, but also launching support strikes such as intelligence missions, special forces strikes, satellite spying, bombardment, tactical nuclear attacks, etc...

When a zone is under attack and you need to defend it, or when you send your own battle groups to assault, you are thrown at the heart of the spectacular battles happening in real-time. Your army is persistent all along the campaign: your units and battle groups will earn experience, making them perform better with every battle they survive.... but keep in mind losses are definitive as well!

Last but not least, the campaign is also playable in multiplayer against another player!

War is about to begin... pick your side and lead your army to victory!

Wargame will be available on PC on May 30th.

>> See the screenshots << (http://www.wargame-ab.com/?rub=images)

Not surprised seeing the bugs still being squashing in the beta.  Still...darn.  :(

That vid did make it seem like an out of control riot, but I have found that the gameplay is not that frenetic.  I mean, this is a RTS, so don't expect a Combat Mission-like pacing, but it isn't a Starcraft or C&C click-fest.  Based on my experiences with the AI in skirmish mode, the game closely resembles a Total War-like pacing.  A bit quicker, because of the mobility and engagement ranges of modern weaponry, but pretty close all things considered.

Been playing skirmishes against the AI for most of the afternoon. Get my ass kicked 1v1 against it. I just don't have the RTS reflexes like I used to. But I do pretty good when I have the help of an AI teammate. I like how you can level up by playing skirmishes, its one of the things I didn't like from Wargame: EE. Haven't played an MP match yet. Want to get a few more skirmishes in before I jump in and get harassed as a noob.

I have to say the the USMC in this game is awesome. I had a group of rifleman that were the only survivors out of 2 tank platoons, some AAA guns, and a platoon of LAV's with Infantry. After dismounting the infantry, I had the hole up in a some building at a objective right in the middle of the enemies resupply route. After all the vehicles had been destroyed, the marines were able to hold up the entire enemy advance for a good portion of my last game, and neither artillery or some helos were able to dislodge them. They were eventually overwhelmed because I couldn't reinforce after having the fall back on the closest flank. but it was still pretty cool watching them hold up tanks/BMPs unsupported.

Typical RTS skirmish mode. You can set number of AI opponents and teammates, map, and your battle deck. You can set the number of points needed to win, if your playing in the points mode. There is also a destruction game mode where you have to eliminate all enemy units.

The game's release has been moved up to tomorrow!

QuoteThe time is near for all you to finally get your hand on the final, released version of the game.

Official date and hour are ... Image ...
tomorrow, Wednesday 29th, at 6 PM (Paris time, GMT+1).

Have a look here to know when in your favorite city :
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/f ... T18&p1=195

At that very moment, the ranked games will be reseted. This only affect ranked stats, not overall player stats.

Also, you may have noticed that the "command stars" have ceased to be displayed. Some of you have rightly guessed what it meant: since the game is now more about building decks through layers of self-limitations and bonuses, all units will be unlocked at release so that everyone can create his deck from start.

Only one and a half day to go ... but for us, we're playing the solo campaign right now. 8-)

Too many games between this and Old Gods!

I don't know man...I bought it and fired up a skirmish. Moved some tanks forward and all hell broke loose. A crap load of Hinds started firing everywhere...explosions everywhere.  Clicking one fighter to attack the hinds and another A6 to attack the tanks. Just started dragging boxes around units and racing them into the battle. In about 20 seconds all of my units were gone. I never got a chance to even figure out what the hell happened. I had anti air guys firing missiles, tanks shooting, things exploding and then silence

Once the fight starts, everything goes way too quick for me...way to click festy. I will mess around more with it but damn. It's definitely more like C&C then Combat mission. Knew it would be but figured I would try. Graphics are beautiful though and seems pretty fun if you like Starcraft, C&C, etc
YMMV

Maybe I have to give it more time? Maybe file it in the "dude...you're doing it wrong" category

In the vid I posted the guy only had 1 or 2 territories to sort then he helped out his team-mates - I wonder if MP is where its at - his battles seemed fairly hands off - put tanks here in forest and leave them to look after themselves - put helis here to fire at long range - check map - it all seemed surprisingly relaxed
Title: Re: Wargame: AirLand Battle

I think it is until the fight starts. Once units begin shooting, it's "fast and the furious 6". Nothing but stuff flying around and explosions. Maybe once I know what I'm doing it will clear up.  Not saying its a bad game or anything, just giving fair warning. Some have said that its not a click fest but I think their definition and mine must be different.

Well, I have learned a few things as far as RTS gamers. Its not that they click faster, they process information and make decisions faster (usually through lots of practice, but not always). My brother and I play games all the time and I consider myself a better pure strategist than he, but he beats me at RTS games all the time. He simply has a better feeling for those types of games.

Pretty much how I'm seeing it too.  I think it's a fun game, but I doubt I'll ever give it the time to make it worth trying MP.  Conversely, I suspect the only way to make it less of a clickfest is to play MP, and assign different sectors/roles to your team so you can focus more.

Definitely an improvement over WG:EE, though.

QFT!   I used to be able to just stomp all over people, no less the AI, in a game like Homeworld or RTW.  now when I go back and play them its a sad sad time.  another analogy is Counter Strike vs WoT.  WoT just doesnt play as fast.

I've tried to play a little bit online, but mostly met raging teenagers...  I'm hoping  I can convince some friends to play so we can learn together.  The community doesn't seem nearly as friendly as the Men of War community, which is the only other RTS I've tried to play online with the unwashed masses.

Game speed isn't adjustable unfortunately. The new dynamic sp campaign looks promising and AI gives you a challange, mainly because it cheats though. But do hearten yourself and enter the multiplayer, that's where the fun is, I can assure you. :)

The video I was talking about specifically was him playing British and was 50+ minutes long...and I watched it all.

Ok - so not quite "select all and charge" - but there's definitely dragging a loop around units and moving them. I did see him move a couple of Lynx around the flank with some recon units

He does seem to be playing tactically admittedly...but there is a lot of "drag round these and move/target there"

I couldn't keep up with what he was doing half the time and before I knew what was happening, he had bought more units.

I'm out anyway. I've read this thread from start to finish and there's a lot of people saying it's fast and furious - and I haven't seen anything different in the 2 videos I watched. Hell I get overwhelmed in Combat Mission when the shit hits the fan!

JudgeD,
It's fun, it has good graphics, it is a clickfest...that simple. You can slowly maneuver around the map all you want but when the shooting starts, you better be real quick or just draw a box and right click attack

If you play with about 2000 starting points, you will only manage a handful of platoons at about company strength.  This is easily manageable in real time.  If you play the games with 5000 or more, then it takes some serious real time management skills.

Ok...I'm getting slightly put off by the single player.  The past 5 games I've played the AI has rolled BMP's directly to all of my command units.  I'd read that possibly the AI doesn't have the fog of war limitation?  I suppose I need to give multiplayer another shot.

Sounds like the series is a typical clickfest in that they're the usual time-sensitive RTS.

But there isn't any base building, as in the old-style ones, right?  So perhaps that makes it a bit easier since you're just 'purchasing' reinforcements as you play??

I've been wanting to pick it up but I have a sheeit-ton of new stuff to play, and I'm not sure if I'll enjoy it if the pace is still too quick.  Fortunately, it looks like most orders just consist of select & move.

You just have to have a command vehicle in a zone to capture it, then yeah, you just buy reinforcements which arrive at fixed points on the map.

Don't get me wrong, it's a good game as RTS games go, and the engine is phenomenal.  It's just too fast for me.

It seems the bad multiplayer experience I had initially was the exception and not the rule.  I had a great multiplayer game last night playing as the Russians and my teammate was an actual Russian.  :)

I prefer the Soviet armor due to the cheap deployment cost and barrel launched missiles.  Much better than the Shillelagh.  I'm able to stand off and snipe the critical targets and then move in for the kill.  I do wish they gave you the Ka-50 with 10 Vikhrs.  I also wish you could deploy more aircraft and cheaper.  It seems that it should be much cheaper to deploy PACT aircraft than it currently is, due to the historical numbers.

Playing NATO seems too easy with the cheap air power and the phenomenal USMC infantry units.

As long as my internet connection holds up...I can see many hours of multiplayer AirLand in my future.  :)

I saw this great idea on the Wargame forum.  Picking historical 'decks' to reinact historical conflicts.  I can see that being a lot of fun especially multiplayer.

Here's the link to his post:  http://www.wargame-ee.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=201232#p201232 (http://www.wargame-ee.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=201232#p201232)

Picked this up last night.

WOW!  There's a large amount of units to pick & choose.  I'd say that's the game's biggest strength.  I spent a few hours just nosing through all the available units & their stats.  8)

Not sure how well I'll do at it, but at least it's fun building "decks".

For some reason AirLand is very sensitive to my internet connection.  :(  I keep getting 'waiting for players' and eventually I get booted.  Very strange because I can play Planetside 2, World of Tanks, and other games quite well.

Probably my ISP knows I would play hours and hours of Airland if they let me on...so they are singling me out and blocking my favorite game.  I'm sure of it.  :)

I've seen reports of connection funkiness in games with lots of players.

Looks like they put out another small patch to help address such things.  Hopefully they get it fingered out before long.

I've only been messing around with making various decks & trying out the equipment in single-player, along with edging into the smaller dynamic campaigns.  There is actually some single-player to be had here.  Despite always beating the AI in skirmish, I'm finding the dynamic campaigns a bit more difficult due to the various time constraints.

I just got my ass handed to me in my first solo engagement. I've got to seriously figure out what the heck is happening here and what kind of units I'm supposed to be deploying because right now I'm afraid I'm getting hammered.

The good news? If you want a robust AI, I think this may have one.

I need a bigger deck.  I'm having trouble getting a good deck layout.  I setup and then get squashed by something I'm unprepared for.  Since the patch I can play online, and the last game I play I was utterly obliterated.  I had too many air assets and my opponent had monumental surface to air protection.  I had too many tanks and not enough recon.  At the end of the match I had lost something like 7000 points worth of units...

So I massaged my deck and swapped in and out a few items and tried a few runs against the computer.  Each time I'm coming up light somewhere.  I prefer to play PACT mainly so that I can learn the units better.  I know a lot of the US assets and their variants but some of the Soviet stuff I'd never even heard of.   One I cant recall the name of right now is a tracked BTR looking unit with as much frontal armor as a main battle tank.

Anyone care to share their decks?

:)

My first 2v2 multiplayer match ended in defeat, but it wasn't a resounding one thankfully.  I used a Soviet Armored 'deck' and we were on the offensive, making decent gains.  But the other side had turtled up and unleashed a massive amount of aircraft strikes in waves when I started pushing into one of their high-value areas.  Even the large amount of SAMs and AAA we had up on the front couldn't get them all.

I know that soviet unit you're talking about.  It's like a T-72 chassis but with a short-barrelled gun.  Obviously meant for infantry fire support since it's got high HE values and crappy AP ones.  Thing is.. I'd probably rather bring a Mortar Carrier for that role so that it can just sit back further off (and has more ammo).

It's definitely difficult to balance your options with what you may encounter.  If someone floods you with a capable asset, you may be overwhelmed if you can't counter it.

played my first MP last night (i think ive lost Huw to planet MMO) - and took the advice of a few posters elsewhere - 10 x 10 game

you get your own little force to look after, youre covered on the left and right and you can just nurse your small band to get used to the force disposition and who does what - i got creamed but it was fun learning why and how - long distance arty kicks ass, my challenger tanks didnt, air is so fragile but loved my recon gazelles popping up and down and launching at the delicate arty over the horizon - fun game, and relaxed

I've not had a lot of luck with arty.  It's usually so unconcentrated that I have to fire multiple missions before scoring any decent hits.  Then they've sucked all the supply out of my FOB.

lol, i think if memory serves im older than you - im at 41 - but i hate fast RTS where you dont actually enjoy the game, never see your units, never get time to breathe in the game and watch it, its just all muscle memory click action til it says 'Winner' or 'Loser' - this is Starcraft for me, or Supreme Commander and even on some levels Company of Heroes.

I literally had 4 Centurions, 3 recon, 2 anti air units and a Gazelle and a Lynx at the most - spent a lot on air that never showed up - i dont know why but i havent even finished the tutorials yet so im sure i did something wrong, i just wanted to get out there and try it

i moved the recon forward with the Lynx, popped the lynx up to scan the horizon, when there were no enemy units we dashed for reverse slopes and forests - next step forward the lynx exploded, so the recon took up the reins until we came across some enemy armour, unleashed the centurions who also spotted a line of arty vehicles, called in an airstrike on that line and actually sat back and watched Tornados destroy the enemy - big smile, oh and then i got obliterated.

but i found no reason to click anything more than say once every 30 seconds or a minute - but again it was 10 x 10, i was on the extreme left, if the guy to my right had died - maybe a different story

Once you purchase fixed-wing air support, you have to open the air support comms dialogue.  To order a sortie, you must select the desired asset in the dialogue menu list and then click on the target.

I've been enjoying it quite a bit.  Despite feeling rushed for clicky at times, they've done a fairly decent job of modelling a bunch of weapon systems from the era, in relation to each other.  I dig the late cold war setting, so that's part of the reason I'm getting my money's worth, but the actual game calculations look to be a bit more sophisticated than typical RTS games.

Hell, I've been having fun with just single-player stuff mostly.  I'd like to drop in on some 10v10 as that sounds to have less workload than small match-ups.

My pleasure...be warned.  There will be a lot of lead and missiles chasing after your aircraft.  Survivability in the air over these battlefields is typically a few seconds.  Its rare I get any actual loiter time.

That being said, when a CAS aircraft drops its payload, it can be tide turning and devastating.  Fighter aircraft are also great for taking out rotary assets.

Wargame is like Rock Paper Scissors...and I'm coming into the game with a leafblower and a potato peeler...

I really REALLY enjoy the game, and I like that it is hard.  I'm learning to use smoke for cover, the value of ground troops, and inexpensive anti-take missile vehicles, etc.  I am, however, still losing a lot  :)

I finally got this one and the campaign is disappointing. I think it has all the tools it needs to be fun, but a couple of core mechanics are really messed up. I think the issues are patchable, I am looking forward to seeing how they fix it. A couple of minor changes probably won't cut it, but I will hold out hope that they fix it.

I could try out multiplayer, but that is not the reason I bought the game. In multiplayer it just becomes another RTS game where you never have time to zoom in and look at the action. I think that is a huge shame. Why take the time to make beautiful graphics when the game is so fast paced that you will rarely see them?

I really think the SP campaign can be something, but I am putting the game down until I can try out the patch (whenever it comes).

I'm curious too.  The game is challenging in a way I haven't seen an RTS be in a very long time.  The AI still goes after my command units a little too much, I do hope that gets corrected.

^^ This is exactly what happens whenever I play Dom3 multiplayer, and that game goes on for weeks at a time with days between moves.

So I feel reasonably confident I won't have any particular problem playing W:ALB. The speed at which I lose might even be refreshing.  :D

The initiative and morale system doesn't work very well as currently designed. You have to take the same zones over and over again with fewer and fewer forces. Its a strange dynamic and it really bogs things down to the point of extreme boredom.

it never seems to be an issue in 10 v 10, youve got the guys on your left and right to pick up any slack you cant cope with - as some have said already its a bit rock, paper, scissors - but thats the fun of the game - getting smashed by arty then bring in the air assets, if he has AAA theyre very fragile, arty them then bring in the air power, if he has air bring the AAA yourself

Decks are crucial in MP.  In multiplayer it is often better to specialize, especially if you do the 10v10 matches.  In those, each guy/gal sortof has their own thing they do.  Some focus on an airforce, others tanks, some just logistics.

I've been playing quite a few of 10v10 matches and really enjoying it.  I've tried going anti-air and artillery support.

I'm really starting to learn the right tools for the right situation.  BMPT's and Afghanistani's are amazing for getting troops out of buildings...I prefer to play as the Soviets.  There's something about using inferior weaponry and finding a way to win.  :)

What do you guys play?  What's your favorite units?

I always had a problem with the name of this game...I thought it was pretty stupid.  But now I get it...

There is an article in the latest issue of Modern War (one of the spin-off publications from Strategy & Tactics) about the US European theater Cold War Doctrine called "AirLand Battle."  Duh...I had no idea.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AirLand_Battle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AirLand_Battle)

I know...I should have known this.  To be honest, I probably did and forgot it.  Seems like I've forgotten more knowledge about war and guns than most average non-grogs ever have in a lifetime.

I always tend to stock  up on cheap anti-tank missile vehicles that have decent ATs on them.  Great for rushing a small group to a treeline to set up a quick defense if need be.  Although they tend not to last terribly long against a large attacking force, they often take out more points than they're worth.  :D

Quoted for truth.

I don't really use infantry all that much offensively. I normally order up some LAV+Infantry and when the get close to the front I dismount the infantry and stick them into the nearest tree line/town and leave them there. I've had a groups of infantry hole up in a village and stall and entire soviet advance allowing me time to bring up reinforcements. In a game the other night I lost all of my armor around a town and was left with just my infantry, they held out through tank, helicopters, and artillery strikes until my reinforcing LAV's and M1's arrived.

I've only played as the Americans so I don't know if other countries infantry are as effective.
Title: Re: Wargame: AirLand Battle
Post by: republic on July 12, 2013, 04:15:39 PM
Infantry is not nerfed at all.  TOW equipped units can easily decimate a soviet advance, and likewise with PACT missiles.

Wargame:Airland probably has the best 'rock paper scissors' element of any game I've ever played.  Infantry in a building or in cover are deadly.  Infantry out in the open are easily taken out, but all of that is as it should be.

I have a terrible time keeping my aircraft alive, even when I micromanage them while on-map to go loiter behind my lines in between attacks.  If they even survive the first attack..

So I tend to look for a/c that have higher ECM ratings as they seem to survive a tad better.  However, the only real solution looks like sending lots of them in all at once and hoping most of them come back out, in an attempt to over-saturate his defenses.  Every time I destroy some AAA & SAM units in the vicinity, the other side just pumps more in so that's a losing battle of point costs.

One extremely effective use that another player used on me was to lure me over near their map edge spawn and then launch a massive air armada on my ground forces.  I was so close to their edge that I had no time to react to the swarms of bombers that were instantly over my forces.  Hell.. my AA units didn't even have time to start firing before all his ordnance was dropped.  >:(

I'm having the same problems Nefaro, that's why for now I've decided to use them only in case of emergencies and no to do offensive aircraft ops almost at all.
Title: Re: Wargame: AirLand Battle
Post by: republic on July 13, 2013, 08:18:06 AM
I've found that aircraft have to be chosen very carefully and used even more carefully.  You have to give care to the ECM and speed of the aircraft.  Also make sure you have a SEAD aircraft to standoff and take out those pesky radar long range SAMS.  Start off with long range air to ground missile aircraft, then as the battle wages on you can switch to vulnerable dumb bomb droppers.

I play PACT, so one thing I do is try and keep track of how many missiles the Hawk units have remaining, and keep scouts out for any logistics units that might resupply them.  A living empty Hawk launcher is better than a dead one, because the player will not likely notice.

Recon is king in Wargame, both European Escalation and Airland.

I'm always finding the units that provide the most value, are the units I never really read about.  Which really feels accurate to me.  If your NATO and you see my BMPT's and ZSU-23 Afghanskii's rolling near your troops or unarmored units....be terrified.  I'd never heard of the BMPT or the Afghanskii variant of the ZSU-23 but they provide incredible suppression of light units and infantry.

TOW equipped units in buildings can take out my T-80's easily...but a BMPT with an Afghanskii for suppression can empty nearly any urban area.

Artillery is important, and many players do not use it.  Inaccurate but plentiful arty is better than accurate single shot artillery.  I play with 9 well trained Goździks.  I group them on hotkeys of 3 units each and fire at a point on the ground where the enemy will be once the shells arrive.  They aren't very accurate or powerful...but 9 of them firing at a broad area can instantly stop an enemy advance by having a large area of suppression.  They don't kill a lot, but they buy time and reduce effectiveness.

I've had some decent uses from helo-delivered special forces/spetsnaz used as recon in wooded areas.  They tend to stay hidden and survive longer than most recon units.  Sometimes they even manage to put up a decent fighting delay against superior numbers moving through.  Kinda pricey, perhaps.

I've never tried a full-on airmobile attack, though.  That seems pretty risky, putting such a point investment into that.  I'm sure fortune sometimes favors the bold but I'd be real wary of flying them anywhere near the front line.
Title: Re: Wargame: AirLand Battle

I've primarily been playing with a focus on armor.  My raven seems to do ok against radar guided launchers but I normally lose it to gatling cannon fire. I'm even worse if I'm using a/c for air defense. Only way I can keep them alive is to have them patrol behind the front and hope the intercept a MIG as it approaches.

I have better luck with attack helicopters. They still require a little bit of babysitting to make sure they don't stray into enemy AAA fire but keeping them alive seems much easier.

Same here.. far better loiter times too.  They're nice against Normal AI but the Hard skirmish one will send fighters to shoot down your helos, along with regularly bounding their ground forces forward with AA units mixed in.  I've had my hovering attack helos get nailed by the AI that way before I could react.  It gets pretty aggressive.  8)

I noticed this afternoon one of the cobra variants, one of the two sea cobras I think, has 2 AIM-9 AA missiles. I may try swapping them into my deck. I try to keep my helos within range of my own AAA missiles/guns. Doesn't always save them if a few MIG's are launched at them but it seems to help make them more survivable vs one or two.

The hard AI is pretty brutal. I can usually hold my own with my AI team mates assisting me. I find most of the reasons I lose are because I got too aggressive or did something stupid. Depends a lot on the map to. It can be pretty brutal on the big opens maps with only a few trees and buildings for cover. In one of my last games, I forget the map, I tried hold a tree/hedge line. Problem was it didn't offer enough protection and the fire lines sucked. Instead of pulling my units back to a more defensible position I held out and ended up losing most of my initial force. Then I threw good money after bad when I just kept pumping more and more replacements into the fire.

I'm playing nowadays almost exclusively with US Marine deck. LAV 25 autocannons shred everything (although everything also shreds them).. and Seacobras and Avengers provide excellent support. The selection of tanks is of course limited but M60A1 are decent if you give them enough veterancy.

I believe at this point I can safely say that Wargame: Airland battle is one of my favorite games of all time.  The deck building mechanic is what really put it over the top for me.  Throughout the day I'll think "hmm maybe if I swap out X and put in Y I can prevent what happened last time I lost..."

I think my deck is too missile heavy.  After watching a Challenger take 4 anti-tank missiles to the face and still survive, I think it is time to take that unit out of the game.

I also need to stop putting it off and get a good NATO deck going.  PACT is easy as the Soviets generally have the best of everything.

Well.. the Challenger does have the heaviest frontal armor.  All but the best penetration-rated missiles fail against it's front.  They're beasts against guns too.

And, yes, the Soviet equipment has more value in nearly every category, along with a wider variety of choices.   Maybe there's a few notable exceptions but not very many.

Title: Re: Wargame: AirLand Battle

The missile was a Kokon with AP Power value of 20.

Wow, I didn't realize the Leopard and Challenger had a higher armor rating than the M1A1.  I admit I know more of WW2 tanks than modern.

I need to brush up on my modern armor.

Starfury, it was the only angle I could get at.  They were at the edge of a treeline in a valley and they had SAMS so I couldn't get any air assets in.  I had a T-55AM2 with the Bastion missile and a MT-LB SHTURM-S with the Kokan firing at extreme range so they wouldn't be obliterated by the Challengers main gun.  It was pretty cool watching the little battle take place with everything else going on around the 10v10 map.
Title: Re: Wargame: AirLand Battle
Post by: Nefaro on July 15, 2013, 03:24:54 PM
Yeppers.. isn't the Challenger's front armor value something like a godly 21?  And there's still some other factors, I'm sure.  I believe this is due to the Challenger having an ass-ton of composite layered armors up there, IIRC.

You probably want the meanest ATGMs against those monsters, from the front.  Hope to ambush them from the side or damage them as they're kinda slow for an MBT, then finish them off.  You can still get a lucky hit from a Kokan, I'd imagine, but don't count on it happening in the first couple shots before it's in gun range and shooting at you.

The Shilkas and Tunguskas are radar-guided guns, so you might be able to hit them with SEAD aircraft armed with anti-radiation missiles.  Still.. it seems like there's an endless stream of the bastards so killing one or two never lasts very long.

If you have a buttload of artillery that can hit it, you may be able to stun it long enough to get an airstrike through if you time everything right (which could be tough).

I saw him playing last night, too, but wasn't able to get enough singularly dedicated time to play a multiplayer match.  I'm also still adjusting some of my decks & testing them out.  Seems that some point values were changed in updates along the way.  ???

I'll probably look for you guys tonight, though!  :D

I couldn't win the first tutorial mission... I'm a terrible general.

But I intend to put more time into this. The graphics are amazing and the level of military detail is staggering.

Hmm, I think the infantry combat mechanics should be made much more detailed if the series goes for a ww2 setting.

I'd rather they keep improving this series, set in the same period.  There's just soooo much WW2 out there.  I can see the draw for a WW2 setting (what with the expansive OOB) but part of the reason I'm digging this is because it isn't.

Reminds me.. I need to fire up the ARMA 2 collection sometime soon.  Breaking my cherry with that one!  Lots to download.  :o

didn't this design group make R.U.S.E. (which sounded bad in every way)?  And wasn't R. U. S. E. all about WWII?

Anyway, I got the EE.  It seems to have some built-in DLC (crazy -- but I guess that's how you update a game these days in some cases)  Working up from the bottom, I am.  It does play pretty fast for me.  I just keep saving in single player.  Can't do that in skirmish mode so usually the AI overwhelms me there.

Something that I know I will buy instantly is very rare.  Almost any addon to Airland Battle at this point would be an instant purchase for me.  It has been many years since a strategy game has made me think about it while at work...driving in the car...etc.  So now I'm waiting in the McD's breakfast line thinking "Ok, last game those EF-111's devistated my AAA...maybe if I swap the Buk's for Strelas at like a 3 to 1 ratio...I could actually have better cover."  Then I'm doing paperwork in the office thinking "Ok...so Strelas then...but do I do handheld with troops or mobile light armor?  Probably soldiers..."  Then I'm in the bathroom at work thinking "Ok...so do I do BMP or Airlift...if I do BMP do I do anti-personell with the grenade launcher or Anti-tank with the Konkur missile...  Konkur I think."

Then everyone goes to bed...I start the game and get devastated by enemy troops in light fast APC's...which I'm totally unprepared for.

So I go to work the next day and.....

:)

We are in dire need of more 10v10 maps.  To me, 10v10 is the best way to play.  You can concentrate on your area and if a player drops out, its not the end of the world.

I wondered why there wasn't a 'Conquest' mode in WALB.  I mean.. with all those point-based capture zones, why wouldn't you?

I've enjoyed the current point attrition victory conditions but it can sometimes lead to rather gamey tactics, especially where spawn locations are involved in both offensive and defensive situations.

I believe that if you double-click one of your units, the camera will follow it.  That or click on it's unit name in the HUD, after selecting it (maybe?).

I accidentally do that on occasion - usually for aircraft since I don't realize that one is selected before clicking on it's symbol in the air box a second time.

One thing I realized in the campaigns is that infantry centric decks can pack a punch.  You can spam a region with normal infantry hidden in buildings and woods. They are able to defend even against armor with their basic At weapons while you use air assets or arty take out the enemy.

I think it is also due to the points based destruction objective.  As for territory based objectives, an infantry deck may be too slow unless they are Air Mobile.  Another fun deck to play with.

As a dirty communist, I like to use the Igla anti-air units with BMP with the Konkur missile.  Find a good spot, dismount and you can take on almost anything.  Add some Motorelski with a BMP with a grenade launcher to cover them...and your a self contained bad day for whomever is nearby.

Infantry did get a bit of a nerf recently, though.

They used to be able to hold out for quite awhile, holed up in towns.  They die noticeably faster than they used to, nowadays.

Still a decent choice for inexpensive defense of urban areas.

There are some tips that aren't explained well.  If your unit icons are blinking, then they are benefiting from cover/concealment.  You may tell a unit to go to cover but sometimes where you click is not actually cover, use the blinking to know for sure.

Make sure you tell your armor to 'reverse' instead of clicking away.  Reversing will keep their heavy frontal armor at the enemy.

Don't forget smoke!  I always tend to do that.  Smoke rounds block the field of view 100% and help protect your troops if they come under fire.  I often separate my artillery by 1 unit per hot key (press control 1-0 to set hotkeys).  I'll select a hot key, T (for fire on location) and set up my incoming rounds to space out the smoke to cover a wider area.  You can also stop arty as it is firing so you can reposition without having to wait for it to reload.

Nefaro the button will appear on the bottom right near where "fast travel" is.  I can't remember the hot key for smoke off the top of my head.

Yes, there are regular updates I've seen.  I think most of them are just small bug fixes, although the latest "expansion" update was just released IIRC.

I'm kinda glad the little fixes are put out in pretty small bits.  Sometimes I log into Steam and a few games regularly have some ignorantly large files to download.  Sometimes I think the devs are just replacing the whole game instead of taking the time to keep track of which files have been updated and only uploading those to Steam.  ???

yup!   is there a way to start the battle with your infantry unloaded?

so far my biggest criticism is the air defence and air to air combat.  the AAA seems far to effective and theres no frikin way a Polish Mig-21 is taking down a F-15c.  33 years of air combat an no losses for the F-15 prove my point.
Id like to see waypoints for moving stuff as well as a marker showing a units target position when you highlight them.  Id also like a more specific order list like CC or CMs.  if I get to a town first with infantry Id like them to wait in ambush not start shooting when the opfor is still 300 meters outside of town.

yup!   is there a way to start the battle with your infantry unloaded?

Not yet :(

Quoteso far my biggest criticism is the air defence and air to air combat.  the AAA seems far to effective and theres no frikin way a Polish Mig-21 is taking down a F-15c.  33 years of air combat an no losses for the F-15 prove my point.

As a dirty communist player, I think the maps are too small to really take advantage of the F-15 and F-14's BVR capabilities, so the idea is that both planes find themselves in close contact and the luckiest IR or gun snapshot wins most of the time.  Now in the big 10v10 maps I can attest to many a Pheonix missile has taken out many a plane of mine from nearly across the map  :(

QuoteId like to see waypoints for moving stuff as well as a marker showing a units target position when you highlight them.

That would be a perfect addon.  You should be able to shift click to queue commands like most modern RTS's

Quotewith infantry Id like them to wait in ambush not start shooting when the opfor is still 300 meters outside of town.

About all you can do is click on the various weapons to disable them, and then click again to enable them.  You have to micromanage it, but if you want to set up a great ambush you can try that.

the game is not letting me be as sneaky is Id like to be.

Agree 100%. Operation molecricket the Israelis downed dozens of mig 21's and 23's in air combat... Most by sidewinders indicating a dog fight. I have y played W: ALC much, but the first skirmish I played I lost a whole flight of F-15's to a flight of Mig-21's. wtf?

Just chalk it up to game balance I suppose

well the AI seems to like impaling itself on my Stingers, Rolands and Blowpipes.  the wild weasels do a pretty good job though.  Im finding the catch to be launching a whole alpha strike almost at once.  first weasels and wait 5 seconds then your bomb trucks wait 5 seconds and then your F-15/14/Tornados.  the air cover shows up as the mud movers finish up and the op air comes in.

It also can depend on what you've told the aircraft to do.  I've found with aircraft in an anti-air role it is best to just summon them to an area within their longest missile range rather than telling them to actually attack a target.

If you click to attack a target they'll go all the way to gun range, but if you select to tell them to stay in an area that puts targets within their range, they'll stay away and take them out 'BVR'.

Also remember the training of the pilots matter, if you've chosen trained F-15 pilots but the other guy has Elite Mig-21 pilots the Migs can win easily.  Also remember that if there is any sort of enemy anti-air your pilots will panic (even elite units) and will be killed.

As a commie pinko driver, I see F-4 Phantoms chew through my Su-27's and Mig-35's..much to my chagrin.  :(  But...that was before I learned the practice of calling them to an area, rather than a target.

One thing I've discovered playing a few 10v10 matches is how effective a US deck with the Pre-1975 bonus is.  You have everything you need still available and with the bonus...tons of units to draw from.  It might make a great deck for that new mode that is over command points only.

This.  I've also noticed that giving direct attack orders to interceptors will make them close to dogfight range and sometimes they don't even fire any of their long-range radar-guided missiles on the way (or just one) before getting there.

But there's a problem with telling them to loiter at distance, too.  I've had them just flying in circles, not auto-attacking enemy aircraft that are obviously in range.  It seems to take awhile before they 'wake up' out of their loiter and by that time enemy bombers are often on their way out.  I've only had limited success with telling them to loiter but at least it keeps them alive I suppose.

These are both just issues of how interceptor behaviors have been programmed and I hope they've been improving them.

QuoteAlso remember the training of the pilots matter, if you've chosen trained F-15 pilots but the other guy has Elite Mig-21 pilots the Migs can win easily.  Also remember that if there is any sort of enemy anti-air your pilots will panic (even elite units) and will be killed.

I'm sure the odd amount of shootdowns between different generation fighters is just for balance purposes.  At the same time, it also makes me wonder if the newer aircraft's ECM factor(s) are being fully taken into account in Air-To-Air situations.

ah ECM.  another of my nits to pick.  whos idea was it to give a F-117 an ECM rating of none?  the plane should either be super 600 point expensive and untouchable or not in the game at all.  IMHO it shouldnt even be in the game.  its not a tactical bomber loitering with intent over the FEBA.
Title: Re: Wargame: AirLand Battle

They did give it a high stealth rating though.  ECM/Stealth is sort of ambiguous.  I imagine maybe ECM might include flares to foil heat seekers?

Because of F-111's with HARMs I rarely use any radar guided SAMS at all anymore, and with heat seekers I have shot down F-117's.

There is so much to the game that is completely undocumented still.  :\

flares and chaff should be independant of ECM.  wait... are there flares?  I dont recall seeing those.  unless you count the burning wreckage of my other F-15 as thermal chaff.  >:(

[RANT]I had a bad social encounter in a conquest game.  I don't know whether it is my ingame name or whether I actually try to be friendly in the pre-game time...but I seem to be a griefer magnet.  I took my best 10v10 deck into a conquest game (bad idea) and thought I'd give it a try.  My first mistake, I'm sure, was to say it was my first conquest game.  One player took it as his mission to tell me what to do throughout the entire game.  "Republic you take Papa...Take Papa!  Republic why aren't you taking Papa!?"  Rather than say what I wanted "Because I spent my points buying the artillery that is currently saving your bacon!" I spent a good 5 minutes trying to find a way to mute him (which you apparently can't).  Of course, he wasn't actually using proper caps or spelling it was more like "REP tak pap.  OMFG y is wong wit u?  OMG dude just run your t75k in there!!!!!!111oneone"

You ever notice how with the current generation they never have a first time?  They always know everything right off, and never admit being a newbie.  In actuality...they play the game until things go bad for them and then they quit midgame...again and again until they figure it out.[/RANT]

This was my last MP experience with the game which is why I came out and into skirmish so I could practice more - like star is doing - become a jedi master first and then go in

I found the only way to overcome said situation is to destroy said opponent without mercy - however if they're your ally I don't know what to do - is there a friendly fire weapon to unleash on him?

OK, just how twitchy is it?  I see it's on sale at GG today and dueto the popularity here at GH, I'm interested.  My question is, how crazy is the speed?  If it's a Warcraft/Starcraft/World in Conflict clone, I'll give it a miss. If it's a slower paced thoughtful RTS like Graviteam or Harpoon, I'll pull the plug.  So should I buy or not?

It's not very "twitchy", but you can still get behind the curve if you have a lot of units & area to cover.  For instance, it can be tough in a 1v1 because the players/bots get more requisition points, and therefore more units.  In that example, you also have to cover the whole map with them and despite the 1v1 maps being smaller, it's still more workload than 4v4, 10v10, etc.  Fortunately, you can use AI bots as teammates as well, so even your single-player skirmishes can be tailored to the size you want.  More players per team is generally less workload and less map area to cover (although it's good to lend a hand to your buddies if they need assets elsewhere and you don't in your AO).

I don't like 'twitchy' RTSes much either.  I'm pretty sure a few other WALB superfans here don't either.  But this game is a shit-ton of fun, and the unit modelling is pretty Grog-ish for the like.  ;)

I agree with Nefaro.  He's spot on with the 'more players = less workload'.

I've bought and read more books on Cold War machines than ever.  I've bought books on Soviet tanks because I really had very little idea what was the difference since they all look so similar.  I had absolutely no idea the Soviets had so many alternatives to the Shillelagh, nor did I have any idea about their hand held/APC based anti-tank missiles.

Any game that makes me read a history book to play it better...is a good game.  :)

I guess I will give you the other side. I don't play multiplayer. So as a single player experience, it is far more like World in Conflict than graviteam or something. It is a RTS, no doubt. Once units engage in combat, things move quickly. So quickly that I cannot tell who is shooting me and by the time I sort things out, my guys are dead. It is NOT a drag and attack game though, you cannot of just grab any old units and order an attack.

Now I hear A lot of people talk about multiplayer 10 V 10 as being a totally different experience. that maybe true but all I can say is in single player it is a very much a click fest, at least for me;  and is far more like a star craft, world in conflict or command &conquer than anything else.

just my two cents your mileage may vary
I keep trying  because I  do want to like it...just can't do MP though

Game speed is definitely on steroids. If game speed were about 1/3 what it currently is, that would approach reality. As it stands things happen so fast that you miss all of the beautiful chaos happening at a zoomed in level. That is a real shame IMO.

Try making your own deck, you will probably start beating the AI then. You also can't micromanage things too closely, just group and go.

the battle I just fought brought a smile to my face though.
I have a British Chieftan unit with 16 tanks advancing across a nice flat open field.  when they started taking fire I stopped them.  this may sound stupid but I had a plan.  the plan was the 8 Rapiers, 16 Blowpipes and 16 Javelins that were following the tanks at a respectful distance.
when the tanks stopped I unassed the MANPADS and moved them up a bit.  the tanks were doing a good job pounding anything that appeared in the treeline.  them commie bastards threw every aircraft and chopper with a gun at me and lost just about everything on the first pass.  that went on for a good 4 minutes.  thankfully behind all those SAMs I had predeployed 4 supply trucks.  :P

It took a lot replays for me to win that campaign.  In fact, I didn't use tanks that much.  Take advantage of your infantry, recon, and air power.
Take a defensive position and take out the oncoming enemy until you get the needed points.

The campaigns are really great actually because it's not all about building the ultimate decks.  You tailor your tactics to what you have and not tailor your deck to what you want to do.

Absolutely ..just like in distant worlds. Throttle down to .5 or .25 speed. For me it's
(1) move units
(2) watch explosions and cool rocket trails
(3) wonder where units are
(4) complain about kids today and getting old
(5) rage quit

I think the AI got some sort of difficulty tweaking in the latest patch. I've had to turn down the skirmish AI down from hard to medium across the board, and turn AI teammate up to hard/very hard difficulty. It still sucks on high point matches, but it seems a lot more aggressive then before.

The campaign battles are more difficult than skirmish battles.

1) You're restricted to specific OOBs instead of constructing your own 'deck'.

2) Time limits can be tough, and if you fail to win an overwhelming victory after a couple battles your unit's fighting ability keeps degrading rather quickly.

It's easier to learn the game by playing some skirmish battles against the AI, IMO.

map knowledge is also helping a ton.  airborne and light brigades for the hilly mountian maps and armor for the flat stuff.  seems pretty basic unless you dont know whats ahead of you.

first order of the day is sticking the opfor in place.
second order is pounding them with arty.
third order is pounding them with air.  F-111s and F-117s are simply wicked.  Im learning how to dual role the F-18s as they seem to be one of the only NATO planes that can launch a Maverick and then turn and shot a bitch down.  the catch to the whole air thing is hitting the leading edge of your opponent while still being within the cover of your AAA and SAMs.  those bitch ass Su-27s can try and make their run until a swarm of Rapiers, Stingers and 20mm say high.  thats where the micro management comes into play.

Yeah seems to be better than the A-10 in taking out ground targets.
The A-10 can stay longer in the air and keep attacking but it dies faster in the process.
The F-117, due to stealth and just one bomb, can fly in unmolested, drop the bomb and head back home to rearm.

Am I the only one who prefers to play as a commie pinko?

I use high numbers of IR SAMS to take out 117's.  Because of the EF-111's I hardly use any radar based AAA at all.  ZSU-57's against helicopters, Strela and Iglas both handheld and BRDM based.  I may occasionally use a Kub.

PACT excels in missiles.  Everything shoots a missile and shoots a LOOOOONG way.  The BMPT is an urban clearing machine.  Hinds are phenomenal.

However...I haven't found a good mix of PACT air assets that I can count on.  Most are just fodder for NATO fighters or SAMs.  I often only have 1 aircraft in my decks, usually a fighter just to harass NATO helicopters until the ZSU-57's can get there.

my response was to restart the battle and set up a SAM net around my FOB.  then I brought in the F-15 to circle over it and draw out the planes.  6 Yak-38, 3 Mig-25 and 4 Su-25s later and Im happy.  I then went on to kill every damn AA platform and helicopter with EF-111s and Varks.  I cant wait for the next battle. clearing my mind of preconceived post Gulf War notions of what NATO equipment can do and not just rushing in a gang of M-1a expecting to crush everything.  ;)
no really, in the campaign games Im setting up as far back as I can and really working my recon so I can use my arty and airpower while I build up infantry blocking positions and assemble my armor units.  its been about figuring out how the different units work together and trusting the AI to do its job while I focus on other things.
for instance, lets say I have 6 ATGM teams in a town along with 6 regular infantry teams.  I dont have to micro manage them so much, if at all, when the OPFOR comes rolling through.  I take that time to order any fire support needed and then micro manage the aircraft which can do far more damage per unit then anything else.  this isnt a game where you can not lose units so get used to it and use the cheap stuff to buy you the time to work the expensive stuff.
it was also when I realized that you have enough days in a campaign to reach your objectives so theres no reason to rush around.  use the clock for you not against you.  also, even after Ive taken control zones, I dont spread my forces out so Im not panning all over the map putting out fires.

Gotcha.... I'll start giving that a try. I wasn't exactly running and gunning but I think I may have been initially too far forward to get setup before all went to hell.
Not afraid to lose units , but would really like to know what's going on before the scenario ends and I've somehow won it.....  :P

Pretty sure there is at least double that number who dwell hereabouts.  The trick is finding all the ones currently playing WALB a lot.

While it's a game I'll definitely come back to on a regular basis, I still have lots of new games I've not even played yet.  I'm thinking others are exploring their new stuff right now, too, so may not have been actively playing WALB a lot recently.

I'm sure you could find a handful ready to go, on a weekend.  I played a few co-op games with a couple gentlemen here, last month.  Quite fun when the battlefield is divided up between teammates and you gotta know when/where to support your buddies (or call for help).  :D

its not so much misfourtune as misinformation thats getting on my nerves.  my issue is that the more I play the more I see how gamey the equipment is modeled.
recon teams on foot in a tree line spotted by moving vehicles 500 meters away.
Jaguars and other ground attack aircraft coming in at stupid high altitudes when IRL they buzzed along the tops of trees.
all aircraft breaking towards enemy lines after their attack runs instead of away from them.
ranges for weapons that in no way represent actual capabilities.
and the biggest gripe dovetails with the other thread about gamers on forums bitching about things.  if I started trying to correct all the stupid notions on their forums Id have no time for anything else.  the developer however seems to listen to a lot of their bitching when they release patches for game balance.
balance? I wasnt aware that warfare was either balanced or fair.  you want to give the commies numbers?  fine, that squares with history.  but dont give me US or UK kit and tell me that their electronics are inferior to similar Warsaw Pact equipment.
the game is a lot of fun but it could do with a serious reality patch.

I feel your pain Starfury.  I do wish the game could be modded to reflect realism rather than balance.  I'm a PACT player and I know it would disadvantage me but that should be offset with me having greater numbers of assets.

the SP campaign isnt so bad.  Ive played the big one a bunch of times now and different stuff keeps happening.  Id like to see them remove the ability to destroy a routed battlegroup just because you move into its map space though.  its led to some early victories when other battles where just getting really interesting.
I currently have a Marine group fighting a Soviet tank group in central Norway where theyve both been bled white.  I cant take them out and they cant take the last sector that the Marines are clinging to.  all the air power is dead, all the helicopters are dead and the only way into the sector has my Sheridans hitting T-72 with flanking fire.  I think I might have all of 4 or 5 infantry squads left.  worse, I cant withdraw the group from the map for some reason.  a bitter fight and lots of fun.

They are practically wholly different games.  The RTS fighting element feels similar, but the deck building and dynamic campaign of Airland is far superior to EE.

There's  no Zerg rush and scripted missions  in ALB campaign. Enemy have limited OOB (just like you) and battles don't play out in the same way when you try again.

Be aware, it is an RTS in the end. Combat Mission it is not. The game can still seem like its going really fast, especially when you have less people playing and you have to control larger sections of the map.

My initial impression is the game is a winner. The force options with terrain use are very cool. All air seems like CAS though. Air needs bigger strategic maps that slow the game down. It takes more time for land units which is more realistic. It feels a bit like a Cock fight in a cage.
Title: Re: Wargame: AirLand Battle

It just hit me that its the scale is off. A building is 1/4 the length of a farm field. Tanks cross fields in a few seconds. A real farm might be 1000 acres. On the highway at 100Km/Hr you drive by in maybe a minute.

That is why the game feels so fast. Ever hiked over a mountain?

After a month off I played a few games over the weekend...the "Rage Quitters" aka "spoiled teenagers" are rampant.  In one game most of the other team quit and my team was gloating about being so good.  It isn't hard to beat your opponent when you have 9 guys to his 4...  Then I was in a 10v10 and within 10 minutes it was me and 2 guys vs 8.  Things went poorly for us in the beginning and they just all just gave up.

If I didn't have proof...there is no way I would believe this current generation could be of the same gene pool as our "Greatest Generation."  Our society is doomed.

On a side note:  Thanks for the information.  We're tentatively planning a trip to Montreal and wanted to time it during Canadian Thanksgiving.  I did not know when it was this year and was too lazy to google it.  Now I know and can plan life accordingly.   ;)

This game really needs speed control with pause. When you play a replay you can see the computer instantly creates then moves all its units. Meanwhile you are selecting one command vehicle at a time to go to the closest control points. Then moving tanks, infantry, scouts, everything unit or group at a time. You fall behind just moving around the map.
Title: Re: Wargame: AirLand Battle

My opinion of this game is quickly turning negative based on a lack of pause. The developer's forum has a 27 page thread of people asking for pause which they just ignore.

There are only 2 ways to play the game as it is set now. Multi-player, where everyone has the same handicap, and single player against a weaker AI than you should be playing against.

At every new contact you need to adjust many unit's commands. Change directions, Change objectives, unmount, launch airstrikes, artillery, etc. The computer is doing this continuously. Without pause or speed control to give units commands, the game is whack a mole. It is completely crippled as a STRATEGY game.

It's pretty sad that a game with so much going for it is given this Achilles heel to make the AI look good. (That is my opinion, not something I read)

Not into Wargame myself, but thought some others might be interested in this:  Wargame: Red Dragon (http://www.wargame-ab.com/#277)

Quote
Wargame: Red Dragon retains the same game mechanics that made the series so successful, but the action leaves Europe for the first time and moves to a conflict in central Asia between 1975 and 1991.

5 new nations, among which China and North Korea, join the armed forces in Wargame, with over 450 new units. The introduction of naval and amphibian units is a particular highlight, and the maritime and river areas provide fresh strategic opportunities! The full cohort of each army is represented with a phenomenal total of more than 1,300 units and combat vehicles, all reproduced in meticulous detail from real models. A new solo campaign plunges players headlong into a hellish war around Korea, while Wargame's extensive and road-tested multiplayer mode will engage them in some intense and spectacular battles with up to 20 other players simultaneously!

...OK, not so new news, I see I got ninjae'd by Tinkershuffle way back in August. ::)

I play, but with my own modded rules.

The vanilla fuel system was god awful. I've operated some of the vehicles in real life, and I can tell you that the fuel rates were insanely low. There is no reason why a vehicle should move from your spawn point to the front line and be out of fuel.

It's just not fun, so I decided to mod it and give vehicles 3x the amount of fuel.

Besides, the AI has no fuel penalties. Their vehicles can literally drive all over the map without penalty, while I find that refueling vehicles takes more of my time than actually fighting.

Obtuse? All I did was read the modding forum and learn how to do it.

Edit - some folks with 10lb brains figured out how to mod the games .ndf file through hex editing. They then created a program that will call specific lines of hex, so players can modify values.

It's not pretty or easy but it works.

The guy who cracked the egg has since ceased development on the tool.

my problem isnt with the load outs, its with how they drain the FOBs.  8 SPGs can fire all game and get 2 FOBs down to 1/3 supply.  4 Apaches will completely drain them after 3 or 4 attacks.

Ah yes. Completely agree. Fortunately the mod tools let you adjust how much it 'costs' to resupply a unit. I gave fobs a 10x increase in supplies to do some testing but it was complete spam. To make something fun but not spammy will require lots of tweaking.

The 10x boost gave fobs 100,000 supply points, which allowed the enemy to fire nonstop rockets at me.

My 3x fuel mod has removed the constant need to micromanage sustainment assets, but still keeps them relevant - after all , logistics is an important aspect of combat.

Just imagine how much more effective the A10 is with 3x more fuel. It actually has time to loiter and provide CAS instead of just firing off a missile then RTB'ing. Same goes for fighters. F-16 can actually provide CAP for my ground forces.

Next on my list is the tank engagements. I want to accurately portray the soviet auto loader that takes 9 seconds to reload versus the US crewman standard of 6 seconds.

There were a few light armored vehicles I had fuel problems with.  Especially a couple of the scout types.  But usually it comes down to needing an ammo resupply before fuel.

A fuel mod would be welcome, but I dunno if it has been such an issue that I would want to mess with switching the mod in & out for playing multiplayer.

I thought the aircraft loiter times were more for balance than anything.  Air power is pretty nasty when you got enough.

I think-for me- this will be like "Endless Space". A game I don't like at all but that other do. One day, I will play it and it will "click"

Seems polished and well done.

the biggest help to avoiding the click fest is pre battle selection and deployment.  the better your plan and set up at the beginning the easier the battles will be.

After my first few goes at this (Skirmish v AI), I'd certainly endorse that view.  By deploying "battlegroups" initially to assault/reinforce objectives I now feel a bit more in control.

By coincidence I was doing a YouTube search on the weekend for something unrelated and came upon a "deck building" video showing a force creation for Canadian forces. I actually served at a time when most of the vehicles being described were still in use and have ridden in some of the vehicles (M113, Grizzly AVGP) so it was interesting to see a video describing their relative merits.

However, after trying to find a gameplay video to learn more about the game itself, I was left kind of cold. The camera didn't seem to move much, and it looked like all you had to do was sit up on high and give your orders as quickly as possible. I'm sure there is more to it than that, but seeing some of the comments here about fuel, etc., I'm guessing this is one of those "war-flavoured" games rather than a nuts-and-bolts simulation.

They seem enormously popular (World of Tanks anyone?) but like you, they are not of much interest to me either. More power to those that do, but if my initial perceptions are accurate, I think I'll pass. A shame, given the amount of research that seems to have gone into it.
Title: Re: Wargame: AirLand Battle
Post by: undercovergeek on December 27, 2013, 07:00:44 PM
The comments about the camera do the game a disservice - the camera can be taken to foot soldier level or right back up to way above the battlefield - if you search for let's play videos - the best ones are the deck selection ones and then using that deck against an opponent - usually about 45 mins long

Taking the high ground and firing first is certainly not the only tactic or indeed a recommended one

Watch some more videos if you're curious about the game

I definitely would say AirLand Battle is more a war-themed game than a simulation by any stretch.

Don't take it too seriously or you're going to be disappointed.  At its heart it's a game pure and simple.

Exactly.   Don't let the "Wargame" moniker fool you: this is just a "beer and pretzels" RTS that has a bit more depth to it than most RTS games.  Nonetheless, it isn't a traditional wargame/sim in any way.

Having said that, it is a fun WWIII-themed game.  The part I like best is playing a match against the AI (or MP) and then being able to use the replay option.   This game has a gorgeous graphics engine, so the war movies you manage to create are quite spectacular at times (examples here (http://www.burkesjoystick.com/2013/12/delaying-devil-dogs-wargame-airland.html) and here (http://videogamegeek.com/blogpost/25827/wargame-alb-norway-fights-the-good-fight)).  I only really began enjoying this game when I started replaying the matches afterwards.   :)

Also, the skirmish system is pretty flexible.  Play alone versus 1 AI, or create teams with/against multiple AIs using multiple nationalities.  I am glad to hear that the next title, Dragon Rising, is even going to allow you to create custom decks for the AI to use.
