Wallysworld was nice enough to post a link to this in the sales thread. Looks like Graviteam is releasing some more late 1970s, early 1980s DLC for their popular Tactics series...Its called "Shield of the Prophet," and it is based upon a fictional confrontation between Iran and the Soviet Union in Afghanistan. I suppose they are using this fictional twist so that they can model larger, more conventional combat between similarly equipped mechanized/armored belligerents.
Anyway, as usual, looks great...its set for a May 8th release. Pre-order and get a nice discount.

Nice. Pre-ordered.
Now I have to go and watch 9th Company and The Beast to get in the mood.
Yep. I'm pretty sure I'll be pre-ordering it as well. I love the concept and the implementation of the game.
geesh, you guys are killing me with all this new good stuff...be pre-ordering myself:)
Pre-ordered! 8)
Pre-ordered here, too. I still have lots of Operation Hooper to play yet!
So I need Achtung Panzer right? Time to get in the bandwagon.

Yep, you'll need APOS. Fair warning, patching the game is an...adventure. Documentation is pretty sparse and not particularly well translated. Despite that, APOS is probably the best battalion/brigade tactical engine around right now. Definitely worth taking the time to figure out.
Man that does look nice.
And The Beast was a great movie.

Where's the best place to buy apos and get the patch?
I got APOS at Gamersgate for, I think it was $7 or so. Very reasonably priced.
And the patch comes from GG or developers site. Sorry but I'm not familiar with the game.
There's a link to the patch at Gamersgate.
Warning to AMD video card users, the latest drivers (13.4) cause a big drop in performance. Stick with the 13.1 drivers.
GG had some problems with the latest patch so I suggest to grab it directly from the Graviteam's website.

Yeah that's what I was fearing. Same thing with Steel Armor. The distributors just don't get the latest.
Gosh darn it...just realized I purchased the russian version of the upcoming DLC versus English:( Sent a note to GG and hoping they can make the switch....that is what happens when you rush to pre-order:)
GG is usually pretty good about that stuff... hopefully they let you switch.. maybe the download's are interchangeable, they just have to give you a new link!
So this comes out tomorrow...should be an interesting battle.....
Pleasant surprise...just checked and I am able to download it right now...downloading started:)
Good stuff.
I'm on turn 5 of 10 in the Mar 2-3 defence of Tarankova scenario. I'm playing as the USSR. Things were going fairly well as I'd severely hammered the German recon teams in turns 1-4 with fairly light losses on my part.
Gotta love some of the things you see in this game. I had a platoon strung along a the side of a road, about 10 metres back in the trees. I had 3 rifle squads, a platton command section, and a 45mm AT gun. It was just before dawn and I'd hoped to be able to ambush some fascist halftracks. They showed up right about where I'd expected them too. I'd given all the infantry ambush commands and I'd set a fairly short range, restrictive fire arc for the AT gun. I zoomed in, watch the gun crew line up on a half track with a 3.7cm PaK gun on it. It was less than 200 metres. It took them forever to take the shot and it sailed high. The half track immediately spun towards the gun and it, along with 4-5 MGs that I couldn't yet see, opened up and ripped the gun crew apart, but not before they got one more shot off which brewed up the half track with the 3.7cm gun. So much for that ambush, I thought. Within a minute, 4 more half-tracks and 2 Marders appeared. Thankfully, they hadn't spotted my infantry in the woods and they came forward and started down the road. As the string of vehicles passed the first squad's position, one brave little bugger jumped out of his trench, ran a few metres forward, and hurled a molotov at the leading Marder. It burst into flames against the gun shield but didn't damage the crew. The vehicles swung round to face the threat and German infantry started piling out the back of the half tracks. My squads opened up and three more ran forth with molotovs. Two successfully brewed up a Marder and a half track, but the third took a burst of MG34 just as he was climbing out of the trench. He dropped his molotov and three of his squad-mates went up in flames. In the end, that little platoon took 17 casualties but managed to knock out all five vehicles with molotovs and drove off the German infantry. At the end of the scenario, the platoon leader got a medal. I was majorly bummed out when he and most of the surviving platoon members were killed two turns later as they tried to hold off some German scout cars.
Stuff like that just makes the game for me.
Anyway, it's now turn five in the campaign and the German main force just slammed into the middle of my defensive line. I held good ground but the lack of armour and decent AT weapons doomed me. I had two captured 7.5cm PaK guns, two 45mm AT guns, and six 14.5mm AT rifles to defend against at least 16 Panzer IVs and 20+ half tracks. The 7.5cm guns were both knocked out by a half-track with an 81mm mortar. Those mobile mortars are proving to be my undoing. The German tanks tore through my lines and there was little I could do about it. I cursed Soviet doctrine which prevented my arty spotter from being able to manually designate targets as the Germans completely avoided all the pre-designated fire zones.
I ended up taking 80% casualties and having my defence split in two. I did inflict heavy losses on the German infantry, but those panzers are on the lose and I've only got 8 T-34s to stop them and they're almost out of fuel. I think I'm doomed.
Can't wait to have a crack at the Mujaheddin instead. Downloading the new DLC now.
Yeah,I wasn't expecting this to be ready for download before Friday 8)
Still won't have much time to play till the weekend but at least I can check out all the new toys and map.
I wish Graviteam would tell us when the Mius Front-Summer 1943 game will be ready. While I like the modern stuff, the Russian front is where I truly enjoy playing this game the most.
No Muj in the new DLC.It's Russians against Iranians.
I posted some screenshots for the Mius front 43 game on the Graviteam forum that I pulled from the Russian forum for this game. From what I can tell from those pics that game looks like it will be excellent.
http://graviteam.com/forum/index.php?topic=11128.0
It's got Mujis and Iranians. I just played a quick battle to see how things worked. Looks nice. I think Soviet APCs are made of tinfoil. My BMPs went up if a 106mm R. Rifle even sneezed in their direction.
8) I thought it was only Soviets and Iranians.Much better having the Muj too,now I can do Quick battles about the real Afghan-Soviet war.
I noticed the Soviet APCs in Hooper weren't all that well armored also and didn't last long,so it doesn't surprise me they aren't all that great in this DLC either.I guess I'll just have to treat them as just slightly better than nothing battle taxis.
Shame there's no air power. I was really hoping that I'd get to play with some Hinds and Frogfoots. (Frogfeet?). I've seen screen shots showing the Hind but I can't seem to find it in the encyclopedia or in the quick mission OOBs.
I'm still downloading(very sloooow network).
For Quick Battles try looking in the company and battalion HQ platoons for air assets, there is usually a little airplane icon in the last line for the platoon and normally that slot is empty.Click on that empty slot and the air spotters should show up in the reinforcement pool(look in artillery for them) and you can draw them from there.
Thanks. I guess I'm just not having any luck as I always get howitzers over air power. However, I just ended up on the receiving end of an Iranian airstrike. Looked very cool even though I ended up losing the majority of my platoon.
I would think the best place to look for the air assets are in the battalion HQ for mech. units.Every unit is different and are only allowed certain reinforcements to be drawn from the replacement pool.
Eventually You should be able to find them if you search all the HQs.
The Hind attack helicopter should be called either the Mi-24 or Mi-25.
Once I get this game to download I'll see if I can't locate their exact platoon and report what I find. You may stumble across them before that LOL,considering how long it's taking me to download this game tonight. >:(
might finally have to bow to the pressure!
Me.too. This Soviet Iranian DLC is too much for me to resist. So all I need is the original game and this one DLC right?
Anyone.know if there is any historical truth at all to the Iranians looking to aid the Afghans in 1979?
I think there's a whole fiery hell of patching to do too
Downloaded the DLC and fired up the campaign. I'm getting the following error for every battle that I try to play for the campaign:
Critical error
011: Unable to find the unit description
[ i_techn:techn_0b002621 ]
I've posted this on the Graviteam forum.
That error was quickly solved when I moved the new DLC up in the list in the Game Updater. Just in case anyone else runs into this issue, here's my list:
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg12.imageshack.us%2Fimg12%2F1281%2F61671356.jpg&hash=40ccd928b5fd5d0cf517eb20a01ff03510762cc5)
I get a similar error whenever a Soviet unit fires a tripod mounted ATGM. I'll try bumping up the list when I get home from work.
I keep getting this error message.
QuoteCritical error
001: An error has occurred while initializing the program
I've tried re-ordering the updates, but that doesn't seem to make a difference.
I notice that my DLC doesn't actually appear on my list. It's just a blank entry. I wonder if it's related to the G2extension file I downloaded from Gamersgate. Mine's listed as pre-final. Did I somehow get a beta version?
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv320%2Fbogaty%2FAPOS_zpsd5cde4e0.jpg%7Eoriginal&hash=7bcacc1696a4a448789a8bbf4f92fb4085375e30) (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bogaty/media/APOS_zpsd5cde4e0.jpg.html)
Mine had the same file name as you when I downloaded last night and I just checked it is still the same final today on Gamersgate. I thought the name was odd at first as well. When I bring up my updates, mine shows the DLC as blank as well but so far no errors for me, although I have not played a ton yet.
I posted the question about the missing DLC name over at the official forums and got a response. It appears that Gamersgate does not currently have the latest patches available for download and they are currently only available at the game's web site. Once I downloaded and installed these new versions, my dlc name showed up as it should. Sounds like they will be updating the gamersgate download in the next few days.
*Note* For some reason the patch file I downloaded did not have the correct file extension so I had to rename the file from gtos_patch_march13c1_eng to gtos_patch_march13c1_eng.gt2extension . Once I did that I was able to install from the updater
It is unbelievable how the entire patching and communication process for this game series is so difficult, where they could have made it so much easier:(
Here is link to the latest patches both in torrent and normal download.

Sheesh. Looks like a nightmare getting this patched up. And to think Gamersgate is their official distributor.
It took me almost two days just to download the damn thing.
It's hard to know how much of these problems are GG's fault and how much are Graviteam's, but I strongly suspect it's the latter. There's clearly a language barrier (the devs are Ukrainian) that makes communicating information about how to do things an uphill battle. But beyond that is Graviteam's openly contemptuous attitude toward customer support. Complaints about the difficulty of patching usually meet with an "It's not hard, why can't you just figure it out?" response.

I think it's not hard but it's not convenient either. Definitely not at par with other games.
Once you learn their patching system, it's fairly straightforward. A Graviteam guy PMed me and said that there was a delay getting the latest updates to GG but they'll have them on their site as of May 11th.

FYI that there are two new patches out: http://mods.tanksim.org.ru/tmp/gtos_patch_march13b4_eng/ (http://mods.tanksim.org.ru/tmp/gtos_patch_march13b4_eng/)
After installing both patches, you should have version 2170 in the game's main menu screen and the Game Update version should be 4.04 in the Game Updater list.
Those aren't most current these are
http://mods.tanksim.org.ru/tmp/gtos_patch_march13c1_eng/
Another one already, what size is this one? 485 again. Last time I had to rerun the core and the patch for the build number to change. Is this another one you should make a new profile for?
I didn't need to create a new profile. I installed the latest patch, re-installed the DLC, and installed the latest update and it seems to be running smoothly now. No more crashes like I was getting before. I haven't tried the campaign yet though, just some quick battles. (M113s are mobile death traps. They're about as resiliant as a Christmas tree ornament.)

Did a Quick battle on the Summer Volokonoka map with Soviet Army vs Iran that looked pretty cool and played good.

Whoops! Thanks for correcting me on that.
I read from a few people that you should have the District Update and Game Update at the bottom of the list.

I also have version 5.81 (2170) in the game screen.
My game plays fine regardless of the order. The only time I've seen Andrey(Dev) mention order for the DLCs was for the High Resolution texture DLC,which He mentioned must be above the Game update to work.
I don't have the High res DLC,so don't know if that particular DLC has any kind of effect on the rest of the DLCs and their order in the updater.
Dear lord this was a purchase for tomorrow but the patch process looks a nightmare - is there a one visit wonder site somewhere were they're all laid out in order?
Try here first.
http://graviteam.com/forum/index.php?topic=11099.0
1)Core game- APOS
2)Download and install 5.81 engine
3)Download and install March13c patch
4)Download and install DLC of choice-no particular order*.
*Except for high resolution texture DLC(optional not required) that needs to be installed above game update.

It seems daunting at first but that's only because the patching and DLC installation system is quite different from what we're used to. It's not bad once you get used to it. The big problem with the latest DLC is that the latest patches weren't available from GG at the time of release and the dev's naming system for their updates leaves a lot to be desired.
Anyway, I started a Soviet campaign in the Shield of the Prophet DLC and I just finished my 2nd turn. I'm not sure if I like the map. My impression of Afghanistan is one of a mountainous country with some difficult terrain. The map in the game is very flat an open. It's what I would picture El Alamein or Sidi al Barrani to be like more than Afghanistan. Almost as flat as a billiard table with a few wadis, some rocky bits, some sandy bits and almost no cover or vegetation. It definitely makes for a tactical challenge. Both the Soviet BRDMs and the Iranian M113 APCs are death traps. Once they can be seen, they become burning wrecks within seconds. Much better to disembark the infantry and let them slog. At least a few might survive that way.
The tank battles are interesting. The M60 has a glass jaw. The T-55 is seems almost blind. The Chieftains and the T-62s seem to be the kings of the battlefield and watching them duke it out is always entertaining.

Hopefully we will see this before Summer.
It seems the next DLC graviteam is releasing is about a modern battle between two super powers in some mountains 1960-1980.
Don't know exactly what,who or when.But I'm guessing Pakistan vs India 1965.
went to purchase - but we're not at $7.49 anymore - its 18 for the base game, and 15 for kransaya polyana and 8 for solovko - not a lot on the whole - more research tomorrow

It goes on sale fairly often so you can always hold off as well.
I'm having a lot of fun with it. I really like the transition from the operational map to the tactical one as it adds so much more uncertainty than one usually find in wargames. You have a general idea of the direction an attack is coming from but the tactical maps are so large that you can't be certain of just what's coming or from where. It means you have to be a lot more adaptable on defence. I also like the level in uncertainty regarding just what assets the enemy has at his disposal. If you've already squared off against a unit in a previous turn or if you've done a lot of recce, you will get some intel on the operations map. Otherwise, you're in the dark.
Plus I love the fact that the campaigns are dynamic and that the maps are deformable and if you happen to fight over the same sector a few times, you see progressive damage. For instance, in my last battle, the burnt out wrecks of some Iranian armor remained where they'd been knocked out in the previous turn. I was able to get my arty spotter to take cover in one during an Iranian counter-attack and he was able to rain death down on the Iranian infantry as they deployed out of their APCs.
Almost every battle has something cinematic play out. On my last turn, I pushed through the Muji held territory and ran into the main line of Iranian resistance. I had 2 tank companies, 2 82mm mortar companies (8 mortars), 2 mech infantry companies (down to just about 60% strength) with BMPs, and a recon team with BDRMs. A sand storm sprung up and I couldn't see anything past a 100 metres or so. IR was useless and I spent a great deal of time cautiously advancing to each objective point. I grabbed them all with 20 minutes left in the turn without sighting a single enemy so I just ordered a halt, put everyone into an all round defence and hit the time accel button. About 5 minutes later, I heard the rumbling of tank engines but couldn't see anything. Then a column of 8 Iranian M60A1 tanks burst through the sand, right in the middle of my mortar teams. My T-55 tanks were too far away to see anything and it turned into a close range knife fight with my BMPs launching ATGMs, my infantry firing off RPG-7s, and my mortar teams getting machine-gunned in the face. Absolute chaos as vehicles on both sides brewed up, missiles, rockets, MG tracers flying everywhere, and bodies dropping all over the place. It was all over in less than a minute. I lost 20 infantry and mortar men, 3 IFVs burning, two more damaged, and two mortars out of commission but all 8 M60s were of fire and none of their crew survived.
Sandstorms 8)
Didn't know that was added to the weather in the game. :D
I've mostly been playing a bunch of quick battles with the new weapons in Shield of the Prophet to test how they stack up against each other before I tackle the campaigns.

The patching process would be only a pain without having to worry about installing DLC & patches in the correct order. It's discouraging when you start seeing various recommendations of which foot to stand on whilst sacrificing a chicken to make sure the end result is working properly. :P
Seriously.. the worst thing about the situation is that we usually have to dig around and find such info 2nd- or 3rd-hand. A recurring problem with all the interesting Russian and Ukrainian games with little in the way of Engrish instructions and manual. I recall having to do a google search the first time I installed the two co-released patches in one of these Graviteam games the first time. Luckily someone at SimHQ had explained how to patch as there was no such instructions with the software at the time. :o
What's so hard to make the patching easier like Matrix titles? Or automated like Steam?
I have no idea why patching is hard for this game and the logic that Graviteam uses in this regard. They're Russians who don't speak English and still a small team who seem to be more artist then marketing guys.
The game has gone thru many changes and improvements and the way the content is being delivered has changed much also.
I don't know if one day they will be able to standardize the way they deliver the new content or if this will always be a problem.Hopefully they can come up with a solution.
I don't find the problems associated with adding patches and new content insurmountable but it is very inconvenient.
To me this is probably one of the best games of this type on the market today and eventhough it was difficult to master the patching problem in the beginning the reward has been well worth the effort.
I guess if some players consider the game nothing more than a passing interest they probably won't bother with the hassle of updating, but if your like me and enjoy this type of game it's not hard to go that extra mile.
What I would really love is if one of the experts who play this series could do a detailed walk thru or AAR of it since I always get confused on how to setup and play this game. I know there is a good game lurking in here, but I think someone needs to help get it out of its shell:)

Ha!
I'm pretty much the General Burnside of this game. Most of the time, I have only a nebulous idea of what I'm doing. (I still don't really know what the difference is between the attack command vs the assault command.). The rest of the time i have no idea. I just click buttons, fling my troops around and watch the fireworks. I still don't fully understand how repair/resupply works so I end up losing most campaigns in the final stages because I have no more bullets.
Just play around with it and you'll pick it up.

Pretty much my experience with the game. Looks nice plays well - but most of the time I have absolutely no idea what I am doing.
But the main/most important thing is.. are you having fun!! ;D
Yup. Been playing the hell out of it and enjoying it a lot. Each time I learn something new.
Last night it was that the Mujahideen are really, really annoying and good at nighttime infiltration attacks. Little buggers managed to slip about a company of infantry in close and knock out a bunch of my tanks with AT grenades, RPGs, and a recoilless rifle.
QuoteI still don't really know what the difference is between the attack command vs the assault command
With the attack command your troops will usually form up online and walk to the area you choose to attack.
The assault command they usually form up in a dense 2-3 line formation and run at the area you want assaulted and engage in close combat.
Each command also gives a different level of fatigue depending on how long they are performing this command.
I generally use the defense command to attack an enemy position because they seem to fire and maneuver on to the objective more effectively, but this is only my own opinion.I'm not sure if it really is more effective but it looks that way to me when I'm watching the action.

Lol using the defense command to attack. But it make sense though. Move to contact, shoot st targets until they are weakened. Avoid direct attack / assault.

I believe you gotta leave your unit to be repaired within the strat map range circle of the Repair unit (2 squares?) in the rear and keep them in some kind of passive stance for awhile (with no combat action of course). At least, that's the extent of my knowledge.
And for those of you getting into the newer cold war era DLC.. you should also check out their other title
Steel Armor: Blaze Of War. They've obviously moved many of the cold war assets over from that one, into the new DLCs for APOS. It's the same strategy game as Op Star, but you can also go down one more extra layer and jump into a tank platoon sim with M-60s and T-62s. :D

Yeah, I've got that far but I don't know if it's possible to select which units you want to prioritize for repair/resupply. I think one repair unit can fix only one vehicle per turn and my mechanics always seem to ignore my MBTs and fix my crappy little scout cars instead.

It may default to fixing the ones that take the last amount of time. :-\

Muj Counter-attack
How many units are in a typical battle?
In my Quick Battles I usually have about 5-6 platoons on each side. You can have less or you can have up to 24 platoons total on the 3X3 Kilometer 3D battle map.
Most of these maps are 100+ Sq Km and your able to command up to about a divisions worth of platoon and company size units in the campaigns, but the battles on the 3D tactical map usually play at mostly company to battalion level.
Generally about a company on each side per battle. The larger battles really hit the FPS pretty hard unless you have a very good PC with plenty of memory. If your FPS drop you can always scale back some of the hi res options to get some FPS back.I usually switch to simple shaders and scale back the dust and smoke for large battles.
Yup. I've got a pretty high end machine and this game still slows to a crawl during the massive battles.

I was working on an AAR for the Soviet-Afghan campaign but I'm going to have to start over. I was overrunning some Muji trenches on turn 3 when the weather got foggy and a bunch of Iranian Chieftain tanks burst in on my flank. Even though I had 3 T-55s in position guarding the flank, they only managed to knock out 2 Chieftains and 2 M113s before they got taken out. The remaining 14 Chieftains ripped through my guys, knocking out 6 BMPs, 8 BRDMs, 4 more T-55s and 8 mortars, all for only 3 Chieftains immobilized.
QuoteI was working on an AAR for the Soviet-Afghan campaign but I'm going to have to start over
Your doing a AAR 8) Looking forward to reading it.I still haven't delved into the campaign yet for Shield of the Prophet.I think it's because I don't like the map(Too open!).I do like the new forces in the DLC though, and have been getting lots of mileage out of them tooling around in Quick Battles.
I'm still trying to get the force mix right for my hypothetical Chechen War 85 battles on the Taranovka map.The Muj with RPGs and RRs are still knocking the stuffing out of the Soviet Army Mech. companies I use to assault the town.
I started experimenting with the Cuban mech units tonight against the Muj and they seem to do much better, mainly because they have 5 squads per platoon instead of 3 for the Soviets.Plus the Cuban uniforms seem to blend better in the snow since they look white with a black camo blend.
I'm having a lot of fun with these QB experiments and like that I can use the modern forces on the WW2 campaign maps.I'm even thinking of suggesting a modern Chechen War DLC to Andrey.I'm pretty sure that whole war wasn't just fought in Grozny.
I agree with you about the map. It seems too flat to me. Not how I picture Afghanistan at all. I think the weather needs tweaking as well as fog and storms seem to be the norm from turn 3 onwards in the campaign.

The maps are all flat rolling terrain that I've seen in these Graviteam games. Must be some limitations or drawbacks with height/LOS.
Yeah,I think there were a couple reasons for choosing that part of Afghanistan for doing this kind of mech battle. One I think is they wanted to do a large map for the mech units to maneuver on,but they also wanted one that could be done quickly. So it looks like they searched for the most barren place they could find in Afghanistan to fit that bill.As far as the weather, they probably needed to scale back the LOS or the infantry units wouldn't last past the 5th turn.
I expect the next DLC will be just as barren. It's suppose to be about a real Russian vs Chinese battle that took place in the 1960s most likely near some 1 goat town in the middle of east tree stump province.
I think this modern stuff is just some quick DLCs that Graviteam is throwing together to keep us occupied till they release their new flagship game Mius Front 1943.That map for that game looks really cool and I'm almost ready to get back to the WW2 east front action where this game really shines.
I like the modern stuff too,but WW2 is still my favorite era for this type of game.
QuoteThe maps are all flat rolling terrain that I've seen in these Graviteam games. Must be some limitations or drawbacks with height/LOS.
I don't think that's the problem.I think they are easier to produce and the barren maps don't hit your FPS as hard for large battles. Also the next DLC is suppose to take place in some Mountains.

I also have version 5.81 (2170) in the game screen.
I notice that some players have additional mods (I see bloodmod above etc). Are these any good and where did you get them? Also was installing them a similar non intuitive exercise as the patches and DLC?
Thanks
Conrad
Most of those mods don't work anymore with the new patch and engine updates.Unless the the author updates them regularly, they have a very short shelf life since the game is updated about every 4-6 months.Alot of the older mods if any good have been added to the game.As of yet no one has created any new mods for the new engine and patch but NightPostman is working on a uniform mod and his work is very good(Hopefully He'll release it soon)I still keep an older version of the game to use his last uniform mod which doesn't work with the new updates.
Next DLC map editor screenshots-I think this is the China vs Russia one.

Drat. Well, a man can dream...
You can entrench your tanks and APCs.Which is almost like an armored pillbox but with the added ability to pull out later if you don't like the initial positioning though they won't be able to entrench again elsewhere during the battle.
Here's a few screen shots of entrenched tanks.

Dolan, do the entrenched tanks in Sword of Prophet stay put? In Op Star, entrenched vehicles have the extremely annoying habit of backing out of their trenches as soon as they spot an enemy (...thus nullifying the point of the trench in the first place). I've tried everything to prevent this, like giving them a very, very narrow firing arc, but nothing works.
I've found that if they try to back out, issuing a "defence" order and clicking on the entrenchment will get them back into place and have them stay put unless they panic.
Interesting... I will definitely give that a try --

That's never really been a problem for me since I very rarely entrench my tanks unless they are out of gas or immobilized beyond repair.
I've seen this happen with HMGs though.
I think it has to do with the fact that if your gun wants to target enemy units outside of its original covered arc(90 degrees I think, not sure mostly a guess)then it will have to displace from the entrenchment to do so.
I think this because the dirt from the entrenchment is piled up around the entrenchment except for where your covered arc is so you are not able to traverse your gun inside the entrenchment to engage outside of this arc.
This seems to be abstracted and not graphically apparent.

ok what do I need to buy to get Operation Hooper and Shield to work?
Achtung Panzer Operation Star(Core Game)
Once you have purchased the core game APOS you need to update the game so it will accept the new DLCs
These patches and game engine updates are available at gamersgate
without charge.
gtos_cu_581_eng
apos_upd_tar_rak_mar13_eng
gtos_patch_march13c4_eng
Though I'm not sure about gtos_cu_581_eng, the latest is c1, but what this is...
The order is: core update (gtos_cu_581_eng (c1?)) - first, patch (gtos_patch_march13c4_eng) - second, everything else - after these.
So,1)base game-APOS 2) update and patch 3) then add the Op Hooper and Shield of the Prophet DLCs next in the updater. No particular order is required for the DLCs.
PS-By default these updates and patches will try to install in (x86)program files do not let them(The game will not work from here) install everything in your C programs in new folder.

Thanks for the clear instructions. Honestly, not going through with the purchase after reading this went through my mind. But I will pull the trigger nevertheless (I think).
Hey Dolan,
What's your build number and version? Mine says 2170 , mar 13 c2 patch? i installed the c4 patch, funny the screen says c2. I' don't own the new DLC's yet and i'm not sure about them. I prefer WW2, and watching the vids and looking at the screenshots I'm just not sure the terrain interests me. the sale might be hard to pass up but it seems like the battles would be straight up slug fests at longer ranges[sand storm not withstanding] No flank surprises either way. curious which one of the newer DLC's people prefer and why.
Having played around with Shield of the Prophet quite a bit, I have to agree that the terrain is the weakest feature of that particular DLC. The flat desert terrain really does limit the usefulness of infantry in battles. Most battles tend to be shooting matches between tanks (Soviet BMPs can hold their own. BRDMs and Iranian M113s are worthless). You might want to have a look at Operation Hooper. The terrain on that map is a little more interesting and varied and the South African gear is interesting.
Also, if you do buy the DLCs, you can use the WWII maps and generate quick battles using modern gear on them.

That has definite possibilities. Thx
QuoteWhat's your build number and version? Mine says 2170 , mar 13 c2 patch
Mine is the same.
I'm not a big fan either of the desert map and bought the Shield of the Prophet DLC to use the new modern forces on the other maps.
I'm having a lot of fun using the Cubans from Hooper-they have larger mech infantry platoons and their uniforms blend with the snow better, and the modern Russians from Shield for quick battles against the Mujihadeen forces.
Kind of a Chechen war type setting on the Taranovka,Sokolovo,Krasnaya Polyana and Rakitnoe maps.
The battles are very intense and look like a 4th of July fire works display in winter.
WW2 is still my favorite era to wargame but I'm having lots of cool battles with the modern stuff too.
Have no idea when the Mius Front game will be released but this is a nice change of pace till that game is released.
The next DLC is in the mountains and looks much better for use in quick battles as an Afghan vs Soviets in Afghanistan type of conflict eventhough the DLC will be about a Sino Soviet border clash in 1969.
OK - if I follow the patching instructions above, I should not have any issues installing APOS and then the Shield of the Prophet DLC this far along after release, right?
Mius looks very good,or at least the map does.
Not sure exactly what part of the Mius campaign is being represented by the game, but I am sure there will be some Russian bias involved.
I get the impression it will mainly be a German defensive/Russian assault campaign and I think the local counterattack by the 23rd panzer division and 16th panzer grenadier division will be in the game.Don't quote me on this!
From what I understand the campaign will take place in July 1943,so that would count out the German counter attack in August by two SS divisions(DR&TK) that eventually stabilized the Mius front area and pushed the Soviets back across the river.
I don't think I've ever been satisfied with any of the campaigns for this game though.
Which is why I mainly use the game for quick battles.
I think the counterattack by the two SS divisions in Aug. would make a better campaign for the game or at least a nice and interesting addition. Since they pretty much finished the job the 23rd PD and 16th PGD started and it took place in the same area.
I like the look of the new map and the Russians are getting some nice new equipment, but the Germans are getting crap for the Mius game. Can't say I'm too happy with that.
Andrey mentioned a DLC about a Panther tank, which He said they are producing somewhat at my request. But I think after I gave him so much grief over the Zhalanashkol 1969 DLC He probably shelved it out of spite.
The Voronezh(Shilovo) in July 1942 DLC looks pretty good though and I like the look and feel of that one. This DLC also features the 23rd PD.

I had trouble but Jarhead squared me away. I would PM him if you have an issue.
Also,
It seems Nomonhan 1939 has been pulled out of mothballs and may be released soon.
Nomonhan is a Russian vs Japanese battle that took place in Mongolia in 1939.
Can't say I'm very interested in this one either, but is has early WW2 type Russian tanks that I can add to my Quick Battle menu to use for the initial German invasion of Russia battles. So I'll most likely purchase it.
Graviteam was working on a Sinyavino battle about a campaign that took place near Leningrad in the Summer of 42 and even showed some video footage of it last year, but haven't heard anything else about this DLC except that they were having map issues with that one.
I hope they iron the map issues out because I'm interested in that one also.
Any Iran-Iraq in the works? They already have the stuff in Steel Armor.
Or maybe Indo-Pak?
Never heard Andrey mention anything about those two wars.
Those two subjects have been brought up a few times in the Graviteam forums, but there hasn't been any response about them from Andrey.
He did mention two more modern DLCs were in the works, but the only thing I've ever heard him mention was maybe the Chaco war and a revisit to Angola:pre-Hooper.
Pretty much dashed any hopes I had about Graviteams move into the more modern era being anything more than novelty items and 3rd world little brush wars.
The Chaco war isn't even modern,it's pre WW2!
Just asked Andrey.
He said Shilovo 1942-Assault by the 23rd PD south of Voronezh in July 1942 is next DLC to be released.
Graviteam isn't working on any modern DLCs till after they release their next two projects.

What's the reason they won't do West Front WWII or Russia vs Nato battles?
Developer says he just doesn't want to.
I guess it is because they are Ukrainian and they really love to cover WW2 battles in Ukraine.
Shilovo isn't in the Ukraine,it's near Voronezh.Close to the Ukraine though.
I think the reason they don't like to stray to far from the Ukraine for this game is that most the deformable buildings and terrain types already created for this game are based on what's in the Ukraine.
Otherwise they would have to start creating different buildings and trees ,bushes etc...,and Andrey says it's expensive and time consuming.
If Graviteam wanted to do only battles in the Ukraine that wouldn't bother me,their Ukraine maps are the best ones and there are lots of battles to choose from for that region during WW2.
Well they certainly strayed from Ww2 Ukraine when they did Operation Hooper and Shield of the prophet!
Basically everything you see in those two DLCs were stripped from SABOW.
Terrain models,vehicles,buildings etc...
I've never heard of a developer who doesn't want to make new games because it would require imagination and the creation of something new and original. Its like a home builder that doesn't want to build another house because it would require new plans, more wood and more cement.
Weird.
He said it was partially because he had no interest as he felt the western front was already covered by a lot of games but also because GT didn't have the budget to model new vehicles and new deformable buildings. Several users told him he should try to get the titles on Steam as it'd greatly expand his sales but he outright refuses to do so. He makes a lot if noise about disliking the Steam platform but I suspect the real reason is that he can't make a patching process that meets steams requirements.

I think if they had the money they would love to build a new house, but it looks like all they can afford is additions and modifications to the old house.
I personally would like to see the game head to the Ardennes in Dec.1944 or the Central Russian front during Operation Mars in Nov.-Dec. 1942.The winter representations for this game are my favorite.

I do agree. I think Western, Eastern Fronts and North African Fronts are covered all too much in wargames. There were many other fronts, not to mention many other wars.
I think there is plenty of coverage for all aspects of WW2. That's why I like the DLCs...although Angola is a littl obscure...

Ha! Same here.
I've not even fired it up since sometime before the last update or two. You gotta mess with a new update mess approximately every month.
Part of the problem is that I have to download what seems to be about a dozen different friggin files for every update, and jump through a series of hoops to get each one installed in some vague order. :-\

Yeah.. you're doing that once for the base game and one more time for each DLC. Then there's the separate updater to run. A couple 'extras' packs. Etc.
It's not just one all-encompassing patch package but you have to do this for every
piece of it. That's what drives me nuts.
It's imperitive that you become familiar with the patching process for this game if you want to add new content to your game-That is unless you are happy with what you already have.
This game is a constant work in progress, which means if you want to add new content to your game then you have to keep your game patches current.
There is no all encompassing patch. The game isn't a finished product and still expanding with new content, themes and ideas.
I guess they could just sell the new DLCs as seperate games already patched and updated, but then you could never use the new stuff in conjunction with the old stuff.I'm not a fan of that idea.
It's not a very difficult process once you understand it.
I still do it the old way by opening the Core folder and locating the desc. for each new patch and DLC.It really does get easier once You've done it a few times.

The point is a lot of people have trouble with it. That much is undeniable. There is definitely a better way to patch a game. That being said, the game is totally worth it.
I'm not defending the way the patching process is
I struggled with it also!
All I'm saying is you have to learn it or you learn to do without.
Graviteam prefers this system for some unknown reason.
From a wider vantage point -- there is nothing straightforward about the GTOS patching / installation process. Nothing. Andrey seems to make it a point of perverse pride that installing and updating GTOS should be some arcane art that only the initiated can follow.
1. The naming conventions are absurd. "Just patch the game". In the GTOS universe, this can mean anything from: update the game 'modules' (also known as "DLC" e.g. "Sokolovo" or "Shield of the Prophet"). Or update the "game engine". Or apply a "district update." Or a "textures patch." But note that the "Game Engine" is a different updating process from a "patch." Also, sometimes patches are referred to by the 'month' they were created -- "Install the May patch" -- and sometimes by version number. Got that?
2. The 'ordering' conventions have never been made clear. "Should the district patch go above or below the game modules in the installer"? "Does it matter"? I have seen any number of different answers to those questions and I still don't know what's actually correct.
3. Have fun finding out if you have the latest version installed, or if you need to update. If you purchased from GamersGate, go now and look. Clear as can be, yes? (I dont know if GG maintains that or if it's up to Graviteam to post and clearly label the updates. either way it's a mess.)
I can't think of another game that causes as much confusion as the GTOS games when it comes to installing and patching. The Acthung Panzer games are among my favorite games of all time. I'm grateful to Graviteam for producing them. But let's not kid ourselves. Their 'support' of their customers ranges from insulting to non-existent. And every time I hear an annoucement about a patch, I think "Oh, great..." and not in a good way.
I look forward to the new patches, updates and DLCs,but I'm also aware that they may be problematic to install.
Some times I have no problems updating, other times I may have issues.
Eventually I work them out.
I guess I'm just used to it!
This is the way its always been, this will probably be the way it always will be.
As you mentioned Sandman, complaining to Andrey only falls on deaf ears.
I too am not happy with the whole convoluted system, but I've come to the realization that I do it their way or I stop playing their games.
Since I love the game and the concept,I had to make it a point to learn the system.
Love it or hate,it doesn't matter. This is what we're stuck with.
Hopefully, some day someone(Graviteam) will come up with a better and easier solution.Though it doesn't look that way.
It's basically a learn it or leave it deal.
No question it's Graviteam's way or the highway. Like it or lump it. etc.
And as others have pointed out -- it is actually worth all the trouble. The game is amazing.
And in fact, if there's *one* thing I could change about GTOS, it wouldn't be the patching process. It would be the SAVE GAME mechanic. It drives me crazy that you can only save and quit. It wouldn't necessarily be so bad, except that the game is prone to crash when you save. It's ridiculous. I'd say I have about only a 2/3 chance of saving a game successfully. It's usually very stable, but Save-Quitting is for me almost a surefire way to get a crash. I've completely lost battles I was playing for over an hour because I tried to save and the game then crashed. Absolutely infuriating.
And go ahead and ask Andrey *why* there isn't a Save and play option (you know, like 99% of all games have). And be prepared for more disdain.
Except for the Krasnaya Polyana campaign,I've never had a problem with the save game feature.
Then again I mostly play Quick Battles since I never liked the way some of the campaigns play out,so that issue doesn't come up much for me.
Now that I know how to patch and update the game,my personal issues are more with the crappy unlearnable campaign editor and how utterly defenseless German infantry are against T-34s and KVs and how every Russian soldier seems to have a buttload of KS bottles and uses them to fry half my German Infantry.
Along with the fact that my Germans like to throw their AT grenade bundles at lone Russian infantrymen instead of saving them for the tanks or at least use the grenade bundles last if no tanks are presently around.
I have a few other pet peeves also, but lately those ones have been irking me.
If you're getting overrun by tanks, try ordering your infantry to take a defence posture rather than assault. Then they'll take cover and try to use AT grenades and molotovs. 9 times out of 10 they'll all still get slaughtered, but they occasionally get a kill.
I've had them slaughtered even in entrenchments.
The best I've found to do with the infantry when tanks are around is forbid fire to the tanks and try to hide them in buildings and woods till the tanks go away.
The tanks just crush them in the entrenchments.
I would like to see the infantry at least have some kind of killing power against immobilized tanks that have no infantry supporting them.Instead they just stare at it.
I always had way more luck with the Russian infantry against tanks. Put them in defensive posture and leave them alone always worked best for me. the German infantry are another story altogether ;)
The actual process of patching isn't .. too terrible, after you've done it.
What puts me in a tizzy is that I have to sort through all the Gamersgate pages for each release & DLC and d/l files for every one. Then update one at a time.
It becomes more like updating seven games, rather than just one! ??? Madness! :P
You're doing too much work. You don't need to re-patch each DLC when a new core patch comes out.

Oh? I'm pretty sure it was mentioned in the update readme notes. Every new release requires a separate content update for the DLC packs along with the main program.
The Gamersgate DLC pages each get their own update package that has to be installed via the patcher utility, after every update. No? Otherwise just the main game's update would have everything in it and there would be no need to download the latest DLC update package for each of the add-ons (and hence no need for him to upload the DLC update packs in the first place).
I don't think that's the case. I just update with the patches listed on the APOS page at GG unless I see something specifically stating that I need to install a DLC update. The only one I can recall seeing was for the High Res textures DLC.
I only have 3 patches in the following order.
1 Game Update 4.07
2 Addon Operation Hooper 1.01
3 Addon Shield of the Prophet 1.01
I suppose when the new core game patch is out and no updates for the addons, I just install it and it will replace #1 spot. If not I have to change the order such that the core game update is always first.
I never dealt with the hi res texture DLC because it took too long to download. And I never download updates from Gamersgate. I go straight to Graviteam website and get the latest.
Your order is fine, just apply the next patch when it comes out.
If you had the Hi res texture DLC or the district update that would go above the game update, but everything else needs no particular order.
When you download a DLC or patch for the game look at the read me,sometimes there are special instructions for the update order.
"But the makers are Ukrainians."
Yes they're Ukrainian.
I still suspect them of being Ukrainian with a Russian bias.
I had to turn the speech off in the option menu because I couldn't stand hearing the German soldiers yell "We are all going to die" every couple minutes during fire fights.
And some of the earlier versions of the game gave the Germans some really hideous facial features(pointed ears, hooked noses) very demonizing.
Also, they're eastern Ukrainians. From what I understand they tend to be more pro Russian then their western Ukrainian counter parts.
Andrey is posting a lot of screenshots of the Shilovo campaign on the Graviteam forum.
I have a feeling that the Zhalanashkol 1969 DLC really bombed in sales and He is stepping up the exposure for Shilovo in the hope of not having a repeat sales performance with the next release.
So far,the interest and feedback for Shilovo seems to be all positive.
I thought it was a bad move to go ahead with the Zhalanashkol project, especially with all the negative feed back and lack of interest for it that was being posted by the community.
I didn't like the whole idea or premise for that DLC either, and I'm almost what would be considered a hardcore fanboy of that series and generally buy whatever they make as soon as it's released.
It would be a very sad gaming day for me personally if this company ever folded and went under.I love their WW2 DLCs and would like to see them produce a lot more for a very long time.
This is the game I always wanted and dreamed about when I used to play and enjoy Squad Leader and Advanced Squad Leader decades ago.
No other company does this type of game better then Graviteam and I would be hard pressed to find a replacement to this game that fits my personal exacting standards for the kind of quality, graphics and attention to detail that I've come to expect from the Graviteam products.
Which is why I hope they stick to WW2 mostly. That seems to be where their loyal customer base is rooted and what their most avid fans are interested in seeing them spend most their effort on.
I also have a feeling that Graviteam has no idea of what kind of modern DLCs to make that will generate enough sales or interest that will pay for itself.
They have a good idea what they won't do as far as themes and subject matter.Which is almost comical in a way because it's basically in that same exact direction most of us would like to see them steer towards, not away from as they branch out from WW2.
There are a few who like the novelty 3rd world modern brush war conflicts or little border skirmishes, and they most likely generate some extra sales, but I doubt Graviteam could ever sustain itself by delving too much or too deeply into them.

Couldn't agree more. The Zhalanshkol DLC was, to say the least, a quixotic project. A less kind word would be 'pigheaded,' as in, 'I don't care if nobody wants this game, this is what you're getting.' The idea of an upcoming pre-WW2 skirmish set in Brazil (Uruguay?) strikes me as similarly...misguided.
I will buy Mius Front on day one. WW2 is Graviteam's bread and butter. They shouldn't stray too far from it...
I can't agree that the game should not venture beyond WWII. I found the Soviet/Iran DLC in Afghanistan to be outstanding. The Angolan campaign was very interesting, as well. Certainly, the post-WWII campaigns in SABOW are very impressive, as well. There are a lot of Cold War era conflicts that could be modeled well with this engine.
I also like the lesser known post WWII stuff. I had no problem with the subject matter of the USSR vs PRC DLC (man that's a lot of acronyms). My issue with it was the lack if scale. Had they expanded omit and featured a what-if campaign involving a full scale conventional arms dust up, I would bought it in a heartbeat.
I think where GT might be stumbling is in their unwillingness to invest the time and money needed to build all the units and terrain for a whole new campaign. Instead we get little mini updates covering the same early to mud war eastern front stuff wherein nearly all the units are simply recycled. Or they just do the same with SABOW units.
They're doing the same with the USSR vs Japan DLC. Adding a few new Japanese units and just re-using the early war Soviet stuff. I can't see this one being much more popular than the PRC release.
I really want non WWII stuff because they are unique and not covered by other games. Those are the reasons why I got APOS. If they never had a non WWII DLC, I would have never bought this.
Some more info on the upcoming Shilovko DLC.
One campaign, likely 13 turns long and playable as either the Germans or the USSR.
No new units. (boo!)
The map size is 80 km2
Forces.
Germans get an over-strength infantry regiment and 1 tank battalion.
Soviets get 2 (maybe more) infantry regiments, 1 tank battalion, and 1 battery of off-map artillery for support.

Agreed.
There are buttloads of WW2 stuff out there, even for Graviteam. I'd still like to see some of these smaller, more modern conflicts as DLC. Sadly, I don't think that's gonna happen much since the two we have were only done because the assets had already been created.
I constantly hear that line about WW2 has been done to death or the same thing about certain WW2 battles also, such as Normandy,Kursk or Battle of the Bulge.
Pizza, hamburgers and steaks have been done to death also, that doesn't mean that every place that sells those three items makes them the same way or even makes good ones.
I love Pizza, steaks and hamburgers, but there are only a few places that meet my quality and taste standards when it comes to those three food items, and I would be pretty upset at those restaurants and possibly stop patronizing them if they side lined my favorite dish 3-4 months out of the year so they could offer up something different, new and exotic that I may or may not like and have a passing or limited interested in.
I feel pretty much the same way about this game and WW2.
Keep the same menu, but tread lightly in the exotic dish category.
Graviteam makes excellent WW2 games, but so far I'm having doubts that they will ever make a modern tactical war game that satisfies my taste buds the same way.
"Some more info on the upcoming Shilovko DLC.

The August patch is offering a few new free items to enhance the Shilovo DLC,but the German Panzer Division could still use -88mm FLAK guns ,truck mounted AA guns and a few more earlier model armoured cars.
Everything else seems to be in the game already for creating 1942-3 German Panzer,Infantry or SS Divisions.
I would like to see some German paratroopers or Luftwaffe Field Divisions at a later date or maybe a campaign featuring the GrossDeutschland Division.
New features in the August patch that will be used in the Shilovo DLC:
1) Out of roster weapons. In the German pz infantry battalions will be given an additional AT Rifle per platoon. It will take one of the shooters from platoon, under the threat of a tank attack.
2) There will be a number of infantry weapons out before it was at this time, such as rifle grenade launchers, SVT rifles in rifle platoons.
3) Will be out of ammunition which was not present at that time: the cumulative projectiles for infantry and regimental cannons, smoke shells for 15 сm howitzers, APCR shells for 7.5 сm tank guns.
4) German pz infantry units will use the captured weapons in small quantities (SVT rifle).
5) Part of the platoons will begin operations with losses in manpower.
Andrey mentioned that the DLC-Volokonovka(Fall Blau) will most likely be updated also after the August patch.
http://www.graviteam.com/AP-STAR/gtos_patch_aug13_rc2_eng.gt2extension
New Aug.13 Patch
Volokonovka(Fall Blau) DLC has been updated on Gamersgate. The new Aug.13 patch is required.
Link to Aug.13 patch above.
For some reason on GG the required patch is labled Aug.12 but I think it's a typo.
Do we have to download the latest version of Volo or does the Aug 13 patch update it automatically?
You need to do both.
Update with Aug.13 Patch 1st then update the Volokonovka (Fall Blau) DLC.
No need to uninstall the old DLC the updated version will automatically overwrite the old version
OK, thanks.
BTW, for anyone else doing this, you need to use the "download latest version" tab under the "Files" header instead of the main "Download" tab or it looks like it'll just download the old version.
I've got it. APOS and the various DLC's are well, graphically awesome. I'm still having trouble getting my head round the controls, and sorting out the graphic options is finicky in getting the system to run without the framerate dropping so low that a running man looks like he's skating. Still, I'm getting there - slowly, so would appreciate any advice on getting most out of the game. I've played a Taranovka night scenario, and it just blew me away with the atmosphere. The flares were great, and I was instinctively closing one eye, so as not to lose my night vision... great immersion. I just suck at the controls though. :'(

There is Zhalanshol 69 (Have I spelt that right??), in addition to Operation Hooper, and Shield of the Prophet. However, it is a relatively small battlefield. It has lots of gullys, small ravines etc to hide in though. It's Chinese PLA vs Russians on the Siberian border.

Yeah, it should be but the game isn't all that well optimized. Some users have reported that they have good results setting core affinity to 1. I've not tried it myself as my game runs quite well for the most part and only really slows to a crawl if there are massive numbers of infantry around or if there's a lot of smoke.
I'd start with setting shadow quality to moderate or low. Then try simple shaders if that doesn't work.
Have a look in this thread for some ideas.

I think the AMD Radeon 5450 is on the light side, as it goes for video cards. VRAM is fine but the card itself isn't all that fast. Unfortunately I'm not very familiar with the Graviteam graphics options enough to suggest some of the best options to turn off. Reducing Shadows is always a good beta, along with reducing extra volumetric fog details, if it's there. Hell.. some games the shadows look like shit on all settings, so I even occasionally just ditch them altogether if that's the case. I've also had post-processing effects cause some unusually high heat on vid cards, in some titles, and don't always enjoy the hazy out-of-focus look either as it's often overdone. So that could be an option, if it's there, although I don't recall it being all that bad in these games.
Large battles and Ultra High grass settings are the main culprits for slowing down my game.
A few things that work for me are 1)switching to 1 core affinity,2)turning off shading and enable simple shaders, 3)trim dust and smoke to strong-You still get plenty of dust and smoke even at this lowest setting.
4)Set grass settings to high or lower and 5) Shadows to moderate and 6) use limited battle radius for your campaigns-this helps to limit the amount of units involved in a battle.
Andrey said a 64 bit OS is better to run the game with since you are able to utilize more memory(over 4 Gb) than the 32 bit OS(under 2 Gb).Unfortunately I have a 32 bit OS,I hope this isn't a future problem for me since the next line of DLCs are Summer based with a higher unit density for the campaigns.
Like what Graviteam did with the new map update for Volokonovka.
New vegetation types(corn, fruit trees and few other things) and also added a new village and more buildings to the map.Looks good and a nice improvement.
I never had a chance to notice. I set up a quick battle with me as the Germans. I have myself a TD platoon, a med tank platoon, 2 platoons of infantry, and a command unit and gave the Soviets 5 platoons of armor with some infantry support. An absolutely insane battle took place with the AI doing a great job of over-running my positions. One unit of tanks hooked around my flanks while the main body rushed as one. Even though I lost, I loved it. Amazing spectacle. One T-34 was obviously pissed at my 37mm AT gun as it blew it up with HE, then ran it over. Then it reversed over the gun 3-4 more times before doing a doughnut on the corpses of the gun crew and then finally charging off towards its next target.

How did you do that? I tried setting affinity in the task manager on the "starter.exe" process but for some reason access is denied. I do have my system files partioned separately, and can't touch them unless I format the hard drive. I can't think that is it, but perhaps something to do with administrator permissions. If you've done it , I'm hoping you'll know... ::)
Make sure you turn off the cores outside the game and not in options!
To achieve this alt tab out of game(if you cannot just make sure you run a browser or something else before start the game to be able to switch to) and in task manager(ctrl shift esc) choose process and right click affinity. Im writing it from the back of my head but this should be the way.

P.S. At this area a lot of forests and vegetation in general, as well as a relatively large forces in operations. Computer requirements slightly higher than in Zhalanashkol.
P.P.S. The estimated release date is September 19, 2013.
Sweet. Pre-ordered.
I'm not buying any more early to mid war Eastern Front stuff though. How many PzKw IIIs can one man stand?
I'm more of a map guy.
It wouldn't bother me if any more vehicles or tanks were never added to the game as long as they keep doing different areas of Russia. There's plenty of toys for me to play with in this game, now I want to use them on different maps.I can think of a hundred different battles to use all the men and tanks already in my game if I had some more map options.
What I would really like are some Winter Maps of north central Russia around the Rzhev area.
Though I would like to see a Panther tank some FLAK wagons,Russian armoured cars and a T-34/85.
"Thanks for trying to help, but I was more or less doing that. I got the error message when I right clicked affinity. Could it be anything to do with permissions? I am running APOS with administrator privileges."
I don't know.
Andrey said that shouldn't even be an issue anymore with the new Aug.13 patch.
Try asking someone on the Graviteam forums for help with this.
There are a few guys there much more knowledgeable about this issue than I am.
I tried the affinity route but I'm not even certain if it even worked for me.
I think lowering some of my graphic options is what made the most difference.
The updated version of Volokanovka also had the campaigns revamped.I just played 2 turns as the Germans and it seems even harder than before to route the Russians toward the Oskol river!
My southern approach is going OK but my northern forces just got hit with a counter attack that wiped out 1 of the 2 Marder platoons I have, and it took all my fire missions from 1 of my off map arty batteries just to knock the treads off of 1 of the KVs and kill 2 of the crew.
I was still able to destroy a platoon of infantry,1 KV and a T-34 before My last Marder went up in flames, but my northern force is practically wiped out.
Not sure what the Russians have in reserve, but that counter attack took all the momentum out of my attack.I think I may lose this campaign as the Germans if I get hit with another attack like that one.
A few screen shots from the Shilovo 42 DLC.

Played the 1st battle of the 3rd turn in the Volokanovka campaign today.
After this battle the situation is even more bleak for the Germans.
Got hit with another counter attack in the south by 3 t-34s and 2 platoons of Russian infantry during a rainstorm.
I was able to repel the attack and destroy 2 T-34s and knock the track off of the other, but lost 3 more Marders and have 1 Marder immobilized with a round in its engine(21 hrs to fix)I also lost an ATR squad.
These Marders suck!!
I have 2 more Marders in reserve,a 50mm ATG and 3 37mm ATGs,but I doubt they'll do much good against Kvs and T-34s.This is getting very frustrating, especially since I should be doing the attacking!
I'm screwed! Not sure if I want to continue the battle. My infantry are going to be defenseless soon and I can't say I want to watch the Russian tanks start mowing them down with impunity in the next couple battles.
Maybe I'll try playing the Russian side and see how the Germans fare, because I bothched my attack as the Germans!
That sounds pretty much how my campaign went. I grabbed a lot of territory on turns 1&2 and then spent turns 3 through 8 getting pummelled by Soviet counter-attacks. Ended in a draw.
I'd settle for a draw about now.
I think I'm staring utter defeat in the face and my troops are about to be routed from the battlefield in chaotic panic.
A few more Shilovo 42 pics.

Played the Volokonovka campaign up till turn 5 today and threw in the towel.
Just as I suspected, the Soviets attacked my line again and had their way with my forces.
My puny little(door knocker)37mm ATGs and ineffective Marders were all destroyed in the last attack and I sat back dumbfounded as a KV and 2 T-34s followed up by some Stuarts crushed some of my ATGs under their treads and ran down my helpless infantry and butchered them with MG fire.
I think I'm still suffering from PTSD after that battle!
I can never get my German tanks to do doughnuts on the enemy ATGs like the way Russian tanks do effortlessly all the time unless I micro manage the hell out of the Nazi tanks!
Regardless,my little storm troopers are now beating feet back to Germany and cursing the Fuhrer and me the whole inglorious way.
I'll try the Russians next and see how the AI Germans approach this attack.
Am I the only one who plays the Soviet side in east front WW2 games? ???
I play both.
I prefer the Germans because their stuff looks cooler, plus I'm more familiar with their tactics and I'm 1/2 German.
What mostly influences the side I play in a campaign is who is attacking.
Generally the AI doesn't do a very good job of attacking but it does fairly well on the defense, yet judging from my last battle I seem to be the one that sucks at attacking.
I almost always play as the Soviets. I thought I'd give the sausage eaters a whirl just to get a different perspective.
I still think there is a Russian bias to this game.
I'm lucky to trade casualties on a 1:1 basis with Germans against the Russians during the campaigns and usually win on overwhelming force alone.
I could understand after Kursk in July of 43 that the Russians were finally able to go 1 on 1 with the Germans, but all of these campaigns until Mius is released are pre Kursk.
The devs say I've been reading too much western influenced propaganda and the Germans weren't all that great.
I think they have been influenced by too much Soviet propaganda and the Russians were only on par with the German army after Kursk.
Of course there exceptions to that blanket statement, but on average I would expect the Germans to be more proficient than the Russians before 1944.
If you ever watch Russian movies about WW2 it always shows the Germans winning if they have like a 5:1 advantage and the Russians in these movies are always outnumbered before they capitulate and inflict major losses on the Germans. You get the impression the German Army was much larger than the Soviet Army.
I just noticed that they screwed up the "box" art for the DLC at GG. The title reads Shilovo 1969.
Someone on the Graviteam forums brought that to Andreys attention. He said they'll fix that.
Those screens are just beautiful. Time to visit Gamersgate again.

I generally agree with you.
If you read David Glantz, Anthony Beevor, and similar you'll draw the conclusion that most early war Russians weren't bad soldiers, but they lacked war experience, and leadership due to purges and political ossification of initiative. At the tactical level this hurt, but at the operational level it was truly a nightmare. Some Soviet troops who had got combat experience in the Winter War, and against Japan had useful experience. By 1942 most Russian forces had some combat experience, and were learning well, but the institutionalised lack of initiative and overexpectation from Stavka held them back. By 1943, attrition and parity of material had operated to offset the German advantage.
I have about 5 Glantz books-The Stalingrad trilogy,Colossus reborn and Zhukovs Greatest Defeat.
His reading is very dry and overwhelms you with the scope and amount of info in those books.
Zhukovs Greatest Defeat was about the only one I was able to read all the way thru without exhausting my brain cells.
An author I like the most who writes good books on the East Front is George M Nipe Jr.
"Last Victory in Russia" and "Decision in the Ukraine" are very well written books that don't tax the brain and describe battles in an easy to follow manner.I like his style and agree with a lot of his conclusions.
I also liked Douglas Nashs book "Hells Gate".
"Those screens are just beautiful. Time to visit Gamersgate again."
I agree,
the graphics for this game have improved 10 fold from the original APK 43.
The East Front really comes alive while playing this game.
Graviteam captures the essence of East Front combat like no other game,I especially like the winter graphics.
Now if some developer could do the same thing with the West Front or North Africa I'd be in WW2 gaming heaven.

Yes, David Glantz is thorough, but as you say very dry. His books make good reference material, but I don't enjoy them as much as other heavyweight "comparables" like Beevor.
If you don't want to slog through Glanz's writing (and I don't blame you), he does have some lectures on YouTube that are interesting.
I think I watched one of those a few years ago that He did about the battles around Smolensk in 1941.
As I mentioned earlier I liked the book "Zhukovs Greatest Defeat" about the Operation Mars campaign and it was pretty good reading.
So I think Glantz could write some decent books if He could just tone down the scope to individual operations and not try to cover whole fronts in broad sweeps while dumping boatloads of info on the reader which tends to overload the senses.
I think if He collaborated with other authors like Nipe or Nash and brought more individual stories into his narrative, his books would be much more easier to digest.
Most of my favorite authors write about the American Civil War and I would really love to see some of their writing styles used to describe the war in Russia during WW2.

That really is a great lecture. I'm listening to it as I work.
Many thanks for posting that video!
From what I read on a book review forum somewhere,is that Glantz no longer has access to the Soviet archives because the Russian Govt. wasn't too happy with some of his conclusions.Mostly to do with certain Russian commanders and their handling of operations around Rzhev and Leningrad.

Wow. More grass.
I saw this posted about a year ago.Don't know anything about it though or if GT is still working on it.
>:( :(
I can't get the picture from my desktop to take here.
The pics I have are of some earth works that look like redoubts.Maybe Brest Litovsk or Boridino not sure I inquired about them once but Andrey never responded.
QuoteWow. More grass.
No new stuff for this DLC except the map and campaigns. :(
Mius Front 43 and Nomanhan 39 will introduce a lot more Russian vehicles, tanks and Japanese tankettes and infantry, but Shilovo was mostly designed by a few 3rd party fans of the game.
I'm still impressed with what Graviteam is able to do on a small budget and their WW2 Russian Front stuff are my favorite games ever.
The theme this year seems to be Summer campaigns and Summer terrain features.
I'd personally like to see some more Winter campaigns.Andrey said they had A Fall/Winter campaign on the drawing board but didn't want to disclose anymore info on it till they are certain that they will complete it.
Graviteam has lots of new things planned for the future but most of it is still work in progress.FB told me once it took him 4 months to make 1 tank for this game.
Unless a major publisher backs them, which I doubt.I'm not expecting any major releases from Graviteam that include a lot of new content.
Then Andrey really should swallow his pride and try to get on Steam. Even if he has to hire a programmer to rewrite the patching system.
I thought He mentioned that Mius Front was going to be a new game with new engine and a different patching system.
They had a publisher once but from what I understand things didn't go to well them and Andrey mentioned that they were forced to make tank simulators(SABoW,SF42)which they didn't want to do,but it was the only way to get the funding to get APK43 off the ground.
I guess they prefer to do their own thing and not cater to publishers who have different ideas and visions on what they are trying to create.I also think they don't get along with anyone but themselves.
This is still a small "niche" market and WW2 and tactical games in particular like this one aren't as popular as they once were.
I'd like to see them get some extra funding from other means, but not if it means they have to release some Space Zombie Nazi abomination in return for the extra cash to move this game along at a quicker pace with more content.
They still release as much as BF does with their Combat Mission games and at a far cheaper price, but I really don't expect them to do anything more then they're doing now.
I'm of the mind that if they are going to stay small then they should just specialize in what they do best(East Front WW2).Otherwise they run the risk of pissing off everyone by trying to please everyone.
Those screens are just...beautiful. :)
It is a beautiful map!
This game needed another Summer map of WW2 Russia.
Currently it has 4 Winter maps and 1 Summer.
I think after Nomonhan 39 is released with some of the earlier Russian tank models I can start using the Summer maps to start simulating some Operation Barbarossa type scenario during Quick battles.
A Pz38 would be nice for this game though but most of the other early war German tanks are already in the game.
Don't know what early Russian tanks and vehicles are in the Nomomhan 39 DLC but I think I saw a BT-5.
I'm hoping it also has BA-10 and 20 armored cars and the BT-7 too.
We don't need any more different versions of the T-26.
The graphics are gorgeous. I should probably give it another go as I gave up with AP:K42(43?) because of the interface. Do they have any urban terrain or scenarios, or is it all out in the countryside?
The interface is much more easier to use than what was used in APK43.
Taranovka is a large town with a few 2-3 storey stone buildings.
Sokolovo and Krasnya Polyana are fairly large towns also.
But no urban combat like you would expect in a Stalingrad,Rostov,Kharkov or Berlin type battle.
Since everything is destructible the developers have been shying away from new building models that are expensive and time consuming to make.
You can try the demo and see for yourself how the interface and game mechanics have changed.
I think you'll find things have improved immensely since APK43.
New GTOS demo(june 2013)
http://www.graviteam.com/
I haven't tried the new demo but I think it is 1 small campaign on the winter Taranovka map featuring the new GTOS mechanics not the APK43 or APOS mechanics.
Though GTOS and APOS are similar the GTOS mechanics have an improved orders system that can be disabled in the options menu.
QuoteThe graphics are gorgeous.
Aren't they 8)
The graphics are what initially brought me into this game.I'm a sucker for decent maps and graphics.
It was difficult to contend with the game play mechanics at first because I was used to having more direct control of my units in other games I've played.
Once I realized that this game isn't about micro managing every single unit and focused more on command and control and the managing of the support weapons,it became easier to deal with not being able to get every single unit to do exactly what I want.
It no longer feels like a chore to play the game and I'm able to sit back and watch the battle unfold in all its graphic splendor.
I feel like I'm the director of my own little war movie :D
Though I do have some actors that are difficult to work with and think the script I want them to follow doesn't seem to apply to them.I'm usually happy when they meet their demise. ;D

is this a new 'nature walk' patch?
Quoteis this a new 'nature walk' patch?
Screen shots from the map Shilovo.
Not patch,a new DLC for GTOS that is suppose to be released sometime this week.
It's about a battle that took place south of Voronezh in the Summer of 1942 involving the 24th Pz division.
A few Russian fans of the game made the new map and researched the order of battle and submitted it to Graviteam.
I think they did a very good job on map and I'm looking forward to adding it to my game.

The 2 large villages in the center of the map are Stepanovka and Marinovka.
The Mius river is off map a few Km south and east of the tac map shown above.

Mius Front 43 will be a new game with a new engine, not a DLC for GTOS.
Here's a reason I regularly put off firing up APOS/Graviteam lately:
See that absolute mess in the Patches section?
It's not the patching process.. I've done that before. I'm familiar with that oddness. It's the clutter that are the patches themselves. I'm sure I need at least two of these updates, for the base APOS game, a third one being optional.. and maybe more? Do I need all of them?! Dubya Tee Eff? There's also likely a certain order they have to be implemented, not to mention the four extra friggin' DLC packs not even listed here.
What a cluster! :(
It's a great game that could use more organization. ;)
All you need is the gtos_cu_581c1_eng(That is the main engine)
and the gtos_patch_aug13_rc2_eng(latest Patch)
Install the engine 1st,then the aug13 patch.
This will bring your whole game up to date.
Once You've done this add the DLCs they all will work with latest aug patch.
The rest of the stuff up there is optional or older patches, the older patches aren't necessary.

Thanks.
Wish they'd remove the older ones when new ones are uploaded. Would make it less daunting to figure out.
DLC Shilovo42 released today for purchase and can be downloaded at Gamersgate.
Unfortunately Night postmans uniform mod does not work with the new Shilovo DLC.
If you have it enabled you will need to disable it when playing/using the new DLC.
Hopefully in the near future Night Postman will update his mod for this DLC also.
Initially I disable all mods when installing and updating then enbable them later to see what effects they may trigger.
This one causes a crash to desk top.
Bummer,I really like the uniform mod and wish Graviteam would incorporate all his work into their DLCs and not have them as a separate mod.
Dolan, don't you also have to update the individual modules, like "Volokonovka" etc.? Or no? And how can you tell which modules have been updated and which haven't, from the Gamersgate site that is?
Also, can you point me to the *definitive* info. on how the modules should be ordered, top to bottom, in the game updater? I've seen so many different answers on this I no longer know what's correct.
Wasn't there a sticky on the Graviteam forums at some point about this stuff, i.e. what the latest versions were and how to install? Seems like its no longer there.
Volokonovka was recently updated so you may want to re-download it.
Kraab has recently started a Wikki for this series and I think He has a picture of the correct order.I haven't looked, but I remember him saying that was his intention.
Almost all the DLCs have been updated at one point or another with a few exceptions so you may want to update them if you haven't lately.
My game runs fine but I never added the Hi res or Zhalonashkol DLCs to my game. These 2 DLCs are what are screwing everything.
Generally your order was game update at bottom district update above that then DLCs no particular order and then if you added a mod that would go above everything.
The hi res DLC is called a DLC but acts like a mod and has to be on top,and since Zhalanashkol it seems whenever a new DLC is released it has to go above the prior one released before that.
I know confusing, and stupid.Have to wonder what GT is smoking sometimes.
I used to keep the sticky updated on Graviteams forum but one of the admins un- stickied it so I don't do it anymore.
GTOS is almost done and won't see much more in the way of DLCs and Mius Front will be a new game and hopefully Graviteam will get its shit together and come up with a more user friendly way of updating the game.
I mentioned to Andrey that the read me should be more specific when adding new content to the game and He agreed and said it was something they plan to address with Mius Front.
Krabb chimed in on this same topic recently on the Graviteam forum.
"Well, the one on the wiki is recommended by Andrey. Smiley Generally, the patch should be above DLCs. Or in other words: everything should be ordered by its release date. Exceptions are mods and the Hi-Res Textures pack, they go above everything else. Strictly speaking, updates and DLCs are designed to mostly not require strict ordering. But there is a bug in the Prophet/Hooper DLCs, they share some configs with Zhalanashkol and should be placed under it. But release date criteria fixes this by itself.
As of district update, it really doesn't matter. It updates only Taranovka and Rakitnoe maps. Nothing else touches them, even the patch."

Many thanks Dolan -- I figured you must be "Dane49" over at the Graviteam forum -- which is to say, the person doing the most work to make this game accessible to the English speaking world. Appreciate it a lot.
Why they would remove the update sticky you posted is completely beyond me -- although that's in keeping with a lot of the way Graviteam operates... which is to say, mystifying...
I figured I could hold off on Shilovo, but as usual the flesh is weak... will purchase it today...
Yes Dolan50 and Dane49 the same person.
I usually change my ID once a year,so next year if I enter some new forum it will probably be Someone else51.
Argh !! I was just reminded of why I have a love-hate relationship with APOS... 20 minutes into an intense first battle on the Shilovo campaign, and then the dreaded "Critical Error 101" CTD ruined my afternoon....
Dolan, are there known settings -- graphics, sound or otherwise -- that are known to cause instability? I have the gfx settings cranked fairly high -- they default as high because I have a pretty decent gpu in a gtx 680. Game runs great, but the possibility of "Critical Error 101" rearing its ugly head as I play is always in the back of my mind. Never sure what causes it.
Do you have any mods enabled?
If so disable them.
Also if you can post a picture of your updater and tell me what your build number is in the upper right hand corner of your start menu I may be able to narrow down the problem.
Nope, no mods.
I'm running:
"Version 5.81 (2170) Update: aug.13"
Try moving Shilovo above the game update.
Will give that a try. ... a lot of this seems like programmer voodoo to me, to be honest.
I'm also going to disable some gfx settings, namely: "sharpen," "smoothing (aka anti-aliasing)", and set shadows to low.
Will also try setting "Use maximum cores" to "4" rather than "Maximum" for my quad-core i7. I feel like I've seen these things mentioned on the internets. Anything to make the game stable.
For the summer maps I usually enable simple shaders and disable shading I also set the grass to high.Ultra high is a major FPS killer on Summer maps for me.
I don't fool around with any of my PC graphics settings just the game graphic settings.
I haven't had any problems but I haven't tried the campaign yet just a few QBs.
Probably give the campaign a go sometime tomorrow night when I have some extra spare time.
I never much liked the way the campaigns play out in these games, but I do like QBs and I love the new map.
If you still have problems, try the Graviteam forums and Attn:Krabb.
He's pretty good at tracking down most problems with the game and is the one who does most of the technical testing.

Very nice... I know Shilovo just came out, but I seriously cannot wait for Mius Front. Is this a 'Q4' 2013 release, or are we looking at 2014?
I suspect within in the month.
Andrey said they are testing the technology on the new map now,I can only assume that unless some major bug crops up then it is basically finished.
I know they plan to treat Mius Front as the new flagship game for their products and I think they want to iron out some details about how they plan on patching and updating this new game for the future so that it doesn't become the same nightmare that APOS/GTOS has become.
Hopefully they have found a viable solution.
I think if the patching and updating becomes more user friendly they may end up doing very well here in the west with this game.
It would be nice to actually go to the forums and discuss tactics and strategy instead of trying to help people figure out why their game isn't running properly.
It's a great game at an affordable price, but a few things are definitely holding it back from reaching its full potential.
I had no idea it was near completion. Excellent news.
If Graviteam can get their act together and streamline the updating / patching system, like you suggest, that would indeed be a huge leap forward. Such an amazing game, and no question the abstruse installation/patching process keeps it from reaching a wider audience. (It will always be a niche game, true, but I have no doubt the notorious technical issues scare potential players away, and not without reason.)
Yeah,it is an amazing game.
Also very niche.WW2 isn't as popular with wargamers as it once was since by todays standards the technology used to fight that war is pretty dated. The new generation of wargamers want new technology or future generation hardware to game with and the market for WW2 shrinks with each passing year.WW2 stuff just doesn't look as cool as it used to 20-30 yrs. ago.
Flashburn over on the Graviteam forums wants to expand this series onto the West Front starting with a Tunisia 42- 43 project featuring American,Brit and German forces in the Mejez valley outside of Tunis.
He started on the project a year ago but He ran out of steam because there are a few items that He can't do that need to be contracted out.Graviteam said they would help him if He went the kickstarter route and drummed up some more cash to get the ball rolling.
I was very enthused with the project and some other people showed interest but I don't know how interested anyone else would be with the project if they had to fork over some upfront cash first.Realistic WW2 tactical games don't seem to be what the kickstarter crowd is interested in buying. And judging by the response to this game over here on Grogheads, unless FB did some kind of modern Arab Israeli or India Pakistan type game I doubt the interest will be very promising around these parts either.
Here's a link to what FB wants to do over on the Graviteam forum.

Like the new tan Pz III paint scheme a lot...
Yeah,I think Andrey said it was dunkelb(sp).
The Pz.III ausN already has this color scheme in the game.
Some of the Mius Front tanks will get different camo schemes also.
Flashburn is working on 2 new campaigns for Sokolovo that He plans on releasing soon for free if anyone is interested.
He redid the Soviet campaign and plans to have both a German and Soviet campaign for this DLC.
You will need the Sokolovo DLC to play it though.

I am indeed interested. Sounds great (and who can argue with the price?)
Dolan, what mods do you use for the ww2 gtos games? There don't seem to be links to any on the Graviteam forums main page. I've never really tried any -- the ones I've come across in the past were mostly minor cosmetic stuff -- but I'd be curious to try anything that you recommend --
NightPostmans uniform mod is the only mod I use.
It needs to be updated and from what I understand it will be soon but it still works with all the other WW2 DLCs except the new one Shilovo(You need to disable Shilovo to still use this mod).
This is a very good mod and it is a must for me when I play this game. The attention to detail is remarkable.
Link to the mod posted below,it's in Russian but it works.
https://disk.yandex.com/public/?hash=QfmPVEj8urArERSSEj5r4LSUhPg228hHPJBxzsjnaFA%3D&locale=ru
Cool -- will give it a try -- thanks
I don't suggest using this mod for campaigns, just quick battles.
I've had a lot of CTDs with the uniform mod during the campaigns,so now I disable it when playing any campaigns.
Aces said He was able to get the mod to work for QBs on the Shilovo map.
I can't get it to work for QBs on the Shilovo map on my PC :(
But it works on all the other maps.
Andrey says this mod doesn't work at all with the Aug13 patch.
So it seems mileage varies depending on who you talk too.
PS:Always remember mods go at the top of the updater list.
When in use they may cancel certain game aspects.
It's best to disable mods when you are playing campaigns or wish to utilize other things in the game that came out after the mod was created.
For example:the aug13 patch is now suppose to be at the top of the list to utilize some of the new features added to the game with that patch, the uniform mod cancels some of these items when placed above the patch and the uniform mod doesn't work when placed below the patch.

Small preview of the Panther tank being worked on for this game.
Not much info yet on what DLC it will be in but the detail is excellent.
Trying to get Andrey on the Graviteam forum to post more pics, and I will post them here later.
New patch for GTOS.

This patch replaces the Aug13 patch and should take your game update from 4.09 to 4.10.
The new DLC Shilovo 42 is also going to get an update within the next 2 weeks.
To bad Matrix couldn't have develop a better relationship with Graviteam and manage the patches for English players.
I'm actually happy that Matrix isn't involved with this anymore.
The patching and updating isn't all that difficult once you understand the concept.
This is a constant work in progress.
Matrix was a bad choice for Graviteam.Matrix wanted exclusive rights to the Publishing and distribution of the game.
Graviteam has been screwed too many times by other publishers on other games to grant them these rights.
Matrix still keeps up their site for this game but all they do is spam it for their other products.
As far as I'm concerned Graviteam made the right decision because Matrix charges too much and does nothing in return for the extra $.
The patching isn't all that difficult and without Matrix being the sole distributor I probably saved an extra $100-200 if Matrix was the only one involved with the product.
Graviteam is working on a better way to update the game, but I don't find it really a problem anymore once you've done it a few times.
Graviteam still needs to make a clearer understanding of what a patch is as opposed to an update a Mod or DLC.
Those lines have gotten a little blurry lately and hopefully they will get this straightened out when they launch their new flag ship game Mius Front43.

These campaign mods are campaigns that were part of APK43 and SABOW and have been updated for use in GTOS.
I just downloaded and added them to my GTOS game and they all work so far.
I haven't had a chance to play them yet but at least I know that they can be added to GTOS with out a problem.

Are the in-game text (menus, etc.) in English? Or Russian?
Just like a regular English campaign only made by the Russian community for the English version of this game.
Cool. Will give them a try.
New rules for troop management system for the new game Mius Front.
More details about new troop management system in quick battle and operational phase (based on the results of alpha-testing).
Each squad will consist of two parts: main and secondary (empty slots in squads list per Operation Star terms). Secondary part is optional. Secondary part (and only it) can receive squads and equipment from the reserve (anything taken from the reserve may return to it at any time if its platoon is not encircled). Now there can be more than one reserve - one per unit, and several for all the units of the side.
Player (and the enemy AI) has several ways to influence the composition of troops in a battle.
1) Create a reinforced company within a battalion. A company can be selected, it will receive the most experienced commanders, high morale and experienced forces of greater numbers, the best equipment, etc. The management system will try to fill all empty slots of the main part of the company. Each battalion can have one such company. All reassignments are made automatically (within platoons of a battalion located in neighboring cells). Player only needs to specify such company.
This feature allows to quickly gather all combat-ready troops in a battle group, for example, at the place of attack, or suspected enemy attack. The battalion, of course, has to operate in about the same place.
2) Prioritize a platoon - determines whether to change the composition of the platoon (and, generally, whether may something occur to it). It works globally, and determines which platoons will be replenished first, which will be second, and which will be not at all.
3) Select a "formation strategy" for a platoon. Determines which units the secondary part will receive from the reserve. Available strategies depend on the type of platoon. A strategy can be changed only if the platoon is not encircled.
Allows to reinforce infantry platoons with supporting weapons, or to transfer infantry weapons under the control of the company commander, or to attach tank-borne infantry to tanks, to provide troops with transport, and to attach an artillery spotter to the battalion commander. Strategy can be canceled, all units of the secondary part will return to the reserve and then may be used by another platoon on the next turn.
The system does not allow to make an armored platoon or an artillery battery out of an infantry platoon, and vice versa.
4) Reallocation of resources and personnel within a platoon. Works automatically, starting on the second turn of the operation. The player can block the reallocation by assigning low priority for a platoon. This allows to gather personnel and ammunition in the most combat-ready squads of the platoon (while some squads may become disbanded in the process).
Mius-Front will revise the algorithm of equipment repair. Just like before, the repair will be done automatically by the crew and repair teams.
In the first case, the repair is very slow and depends heavily on the experience of the crew. In addition, there will be a restriction on the level of damage that can be repaired by the crew in Mius - serious damage will not be repaired.
In the second case, repair teams will repair equipment in the near surrounding area as before. As before, each team can repair one equipment per turn with the given "power" in man-hours. But heavy damage will not be repaired "in place" in Mius. Repair team will take away the equipment, repair it, and then return it back to the platoon if possible, or otherwise to the pool of reserves.

I'm reading about Mius right now, this looks very interesting. Any idea when it's coming out?
No,
Graviteam hasn't set a definate date yet for its release.
Not even a time frame for when they think it will be ready.
If I was to guess I would say between now and February.
They've been working on this for over a year and everything seems to be done, but I think they want this game(Mius Front 43) to be the new flagship for Graviteam and they want to make sure everything works as intended and as bug free as possible.
Graviteam is experimenting with some new ideas and new PC technology for this game and hopefully things will be a little easier to manage with the new game engine.
This is my favorite game,so no matter what they release I'll be happy.
I haven't been disappointed yet with their products and for the price it's a great deal, plus the game gets better every year and Graviteam usually addresses any problems very quickly after they've been discovered.
So I'm hoping it's sooner than later for the release date.
Another good book about the Mius Front battles in 1943 is "Decision in the Ukraine" by George Nipes'
There is a pretty good amount to read for free on google books for this book too.

I very much enjoy Graviteam's games as well. They probably have the best tactical level game engine available now, and it does just keep on improving. I could wish for some more Western oriented DLC, but given who they are and their interests, I can understand why that doesn't happen.
"Decision in the Ukraine" is exactly what I'm currently reading. Amazon had it as a free Kindle download a couple of weeks ago. Excellent book.
I think the Mius Front game will be about the battles in July after the initial Soviet breach of the line and the counter attack by the German 16th PGD and 23rd(?) PzD.
I don't think the counter attack by the 2 SS divisions that participated the Kursk battle and sent to the Mius Front to counter attack in this same area in August of 43 will be part of the initial campaigns for this new game.
I'm hoping I'm wrong about this, because I would like to recreate both situations in the game.
Especially, since they happened in the exact same area that is depicted on the map for the Mius Front game around the Stepanovka area and the hills to the North East.
The SS Divisions are supposed to have suffered more casualties on the Mius front then they did during the Kursk battles and were just barely able to stabilize the line and drive the Soviets back across the Mius river.
QuoteI could wish for some more Western oriented DLC, but given who they are and their interests, I can understand why that doesn't happen
I think a lot of us would like this too.
Graviteam is a small company and would have to contract out the terrain models and Western forces for the Western Front.
So,unless some Publisher wants to finance the initial development I doubt a Western Front game is in the near future for Graviteam.
There is a Tunisia DLC being worked on by some independent artists for this game, depicting some of the Christmas 42 battles near Mejaz al bab(?),but I don't think this will see the light of day for quite some time.
Unless maybe a kickstarter financing type program is involved.
The Tunisia map is about 1/2 done and the Germans would have to be re-skinned for a desert look
and the British and American forces along with some Tunisian terrain features would need to be made too from scratch.

Looks like they're going to try to add multi-plaer functionality. Andrey's got a survey up on the comapny's Facebook page asking what connection type people use and there is a screenshot showing an in-game MP connection interface. I'm not sure it it'll be for APOS or for the new game only.
I'm not much of an MP player but it might be fun to try out a few scenarios.
Cooperative would be nice
I'm not sure what to think about MP with this system yet until more details are released defining as to how they would like to implement it and exactly who will be administrating it.
MP has been discussed with this game for years. Graviteam didn't think enough people would be interested in MP to make it possible for them to do so profitably.
So I'm wondering if some other company approached them and offered to finance it if Graviteam altered the game to make it more accommodating.
I don't want this to be another AirLandBattle type game.
I like the way it is now and think it's starting to get to burdensome to manage the larger battles that have been presented in the last couple DLCs while having to surrender more and more control to the AI.
I would prefer reinforced platoon or company sized Quick Battles against opponents of mutual consent for MP.
Like what was originally discussed for this game a year ago.
I'm not interested in team play with this game until I see some more improvements with some of the detailed unit management of forces that are still irksome with this system.
Regardless of what Graviteam says, the AI is still retarded and I have very little faith in its abilities to do its job properly and will be against team play for this game if I have to rely on the AI to do anything more than minor tasks.

Also,Andrey(Lead Programmer -Graviteam) mentioned on the Graviteam Forum that a new December Patch will be released soon.
He didn't give any details as to what will be in the patch so this is basically just a heads up for anyone interested.
Not much addressed with this patch.
I can actually do without this patch since none of these issues really effect my game that I've noticed.
--- December 2013 ---
1) Fix the roster of the Red Army scouts on captured APCs.
2) Fixed some errors in the English and Russian locales.
3) Reconfigured the chassis of the T-70.
4) Removed thermal tracks from "invisible tanks" in IR binoculars.
5) Snow render is changed in IR binoculars.
6) Adjusted visibility from tanks.
7) Fixed a rare bug with teleportation of soldiers in 0,0 position after HE projectile hits a truck or APC.

With the new Mius Front game coming out next year, has there been any mention of improving the patching process for this game? One of the main reasons I don't really mess with this game is the very odd patching process that does not make it very easy to know exactly how you should patch things up, especially the more content you own. Keeping fingers crossed they have figured out a better way for the future.
Andrey mentioned it will be much easier with Mius Front.
I still update and patch the old way since I'm used to it ,but someone not familiar with the old way should find that recently and with Mius Front that this process will be much easier.

Thank you....you mention that "recently" it should be much easier, did they change something with all the available games to make it easier right now? If so and if you have the time, can you show the patching process, assuming you are installing APOS for the first time on your computer and all the available add-ons?
All you need are the latest Aug13 patches and Aug 13 update engine to make your game current.
Download and open the latest Aug13 5.81c enginge first(very important) and direct it to your game folder then download the latest Aug13 patch or wait for the Dec 13 patch.
Open your game look at the start menu to make sure the latest 5.81 c enginge is showing in the upper right hand corner of your start menu-You may have to reboot your PC till this takes in your game.
Once you see the 5.81 engine has been installed on your start menu you can now install the latest patch by opening the updater and directing it your latest patch download-select all files till after it installs click save and play.
I generally do the patching the old way by extracting the core folder from the patch renaming it so I don't get it confused with other patches and open my updater direct it to the patch core folder select all files until the desc. appears then click select until it appears in my updater then hit save and play.
The winter maps and Volokonovka DLCs should be installed next then any modern titled DLC then Shilovo.
Move your patch update(Mine says Game Update 4.10) to the top of the updater and if you want to use any mods install them above the latest 4.10 patch update.
If you have problems post the steps here on what you did trying to update and I'll try and show you how to correct them.
I'll be in out all day with last minute Christmas preparations and family gatherings this week but I'll check in periodically and offer any advice if you run into any problems.
Like most Russian ways of doing things it looks complicated at first glance but once you figure out what they did it's actually quite basic and simple.
The problem is figuring out how they do things and why since Graviteam isn't big on instruction manuals or reasons for the English speaking only players.
I don't think Graviteam ever really planned on marketing this game in the west.
It was a few Eastern Europeans that brought it the Wests attention and Graviteam is only recently starting to realize that some of their increased profits from the Western sales need to be plowed back into easier updating and english instructions instead of just content ,graphics and engine updates..
I think they may have a western publisher interested in this game for Multi Player if they correct these above problems for the English speaking community.
Thanks Dolan and appreciate the help.....I have holiday stuff too so likely won't be doing much with the game over the next few days....
Whether the game is meant for people in the west or the east, still would be much easier if they just had an "update" button that downloaded the latest stuff and auto applied everything:) Or at least one comprehensive update that handles it all, without worrying about proper order and such.
Have a good holiday.

This is what drives me nuts about this game... just doing something as simple as patching it becomes a process. I've just avoid downloading the patches and I'm playing an old version. just don't feel like going through all this frankly
It's really not a difficult process.
If I can learn it anybody can. I'm basically a computer dumb ass.
I never bothered to learn the easier and new way because I know how to patch the much harder old way and that's what I'm more comfortable with
When Mius Front is released that will no longer be an option for me.
The new way is simpler because it cut down some steps, but you still have to make an effort to learn it.
The only reason I learned to jump thru these hoops and master the process is because I think the extra features the patching process offers are worth the effort.
I've read in this forum how other games can be just as difficult to patch properly and read how you guys made the effort to master them to unlock those games full potential.
So I guess what it comes down to is how much interest do you have for the game before you devote the proper amount of time necessary to patch and update properly.
If you want to learn I can help but if not then the older unpatched game still is pretty good also.

I learned it. The problem is that if I don't play the game for a couple months and a new patch comes out I have to go back to the instructions and figure out how to do it again. I should be able just to double-click an executable and the thing automatically patches itself just seem to be an extraordinarily complicated way to do things.
I agree it's not a big deal...it's really not a gamebreaker, it is just the minor annoyance that makes it so I decided I'd rather play to sit there trying to figure out how to patch the thing
2 videos I made recently of GTOS.
A Soviet light tank platoon and 2 platoons of Czech infantry attack German defensive positions near a river ford.

Two well done vids dolan50...quite a variety of terrain; hills, valley, forests, a full village with different structures. Thanks for sharing.
Here's another video from my files.
It's just a recon probe the main Soviet forces never attacked in force and were just content to grab some land before the battle time ran out.
This was the only action during this hour long QB. >:( :(

Andrey lead developer for Graviteam announced today that "Taranovka summer 1943 is first order DLC for Mius".
I think we may see a Panther tank finally with this DLC.
Last GTOS video today.
Cleaning up my PC and uploading some old video footage to Youtube so I can delete it from my files.
This is a test video for an AT defense on the Volokonovka summer map.

Not really sure what to make of this for the new Mius Front 43 game that will be released by Graviteam this year.
The Google and Bing English translations from Russian is still a little confusing but it looks like the game will be introducing some advanced LOS and LOF features I'm not very familiar with.
Looks complicated but hopefully it will add some more understanding to how the mechanics play out in the game.

On another note.
It looks like GTMF-Graviteam Tactics Mius Front will be a completely different game then what some of us are used to with APOS/GTOS,so I guess I will have to open a new thread for the new game to differentiate the 2 games and help alleviate any confusion.
Once I have a better understanding of the new features and some idea of when a planned release date is for the game I'll start the new thread here.
I love how these DLCs just sneak up on us and get released. Happy to see some more post-WWII content.

The 21st FAPLA MRBde was moving from Cuito-Cuanavale to the south-east towards r.Lomba. Reaching the north bank of the river, Bde had to cross it. And then continue the offensive together with the 47th Bde in the direction of Mavinga town, where a runway was located, which would allow the Angolan air force to support further attack on Jamba, the UNITA headquarters. The 21st MRBde approached r.Lomba from the north. The engineering units of the brigade made a pontoon bridge across the river, which allowed them to transfer heavy vehicles and weapons to the south bank and continue the offensive to Mavinga. But the Angolan forces clashed with the SADF, which began combat operations in support of UNITA, in the area of the crossing. This was the first major battle of Operation Moduler!
