I had been eyeing Planetary Annihilation for quite a while now, because I thoroughly enjoyed Total Annihilation back in the day and am still very much enjoying Suprème Commander.
For me these games mark the top of the curve regarding RTS games. Still having base building as a major gameplay aspect and super large maps to enable all kinds of tactical approaches.

The Alpha of PA was way too streep of an admission price and even the beta at full retail price wasn't something I was willing to bet on. But the game is now in a 50% sale making it 23 euro's.
Pretty good price now that SP has been added recently.

Apart from some DLC for Rome 2, EU 4 and CK2 I don't think I will be buying something else. :)

Not sure what on my wish list I really want. I think everything I still have on it will have to be heavily discounted for me to purchase.

Well I just picked up all Mafia II DLC for next to nothing, Superpower 2 and Horizon @ 50% off.
I didn't realise that the sale also covers most things in the STEAM catalog and not just the offers on the intro page.

I've already done pretty good even before the Steam sale began.  I got Gunpoint for $2.50 from Steam yesterday, and Shadowrun Returns for $5 on Gamer's Gate summer sale (I am loving that game so far).  For the Steam sale, I am eyeing State of Decay as I've heard good stuff about it.  Currently half off, but I think I can wait for something better.  :)

Well, I didn't last long. All of the Elemental: Fallen Enchantress DLC is on sale so I scooped it up.  :D

I'm on a major Combat Mission kick lately so the only things I want from Steam is the Canadian Mountain Passes route for Train Simulator 2014 and maybe top off the DLC's that I'm missing from EU IV.

I am going to show my will power and not buy a single thing:)

Does any of this DLC add much to the game or is it all fluff?

I've heard the quest pack and the dead world pack are worth it but the others are mostly fluff. But just over $2 a pop I figure it's worth it.

Agreed on Shadowrun...got for cheap in one of the earlier sales and played it through to the end. Quite an entertaining game.

I'm logging into STEAM now to check out the sale.  I won't be wearing my helmet either so if I catch something I accept full responsibility for my decision.   ;)

Also, I couldn't resist picking up Disciples 3: Ressurection for a few euro's. Supposedly this version has the expansion included and is rebalanced. It now gets pretty good reviews.

i have put some on my wishlist, so Steam will surly annoy the shit out of me on all com-channels to let me know  when one get's a sale.

Sale rule #1: don't buy it when it is on 'normal' sale or 'daily' sale before the last day ...wait for the 8h-'flash', and if its not in the last flash, then grab it ...or wait for the next Steamsale in autumn, if your personal threshold was not reached

It's a funny thing about these sales.  I've gotten accustomed to seeing great games on sale for 5 bucks that it has spoiled things for me in a way.  Last night as I was perusing the deals I saw that Age of Wonders III is down from 39.99 to something like 27, I'm not sure.  I can't remember because I was expecting to see it go down to 19.99 or less at which point I'd pick the game up. 

Must keep a close watch on the 8h flash sales.  I think MikeGER is correct, that is where you'll find the great savings.

Damn it!  S$100 spent.  I finally bought Rome II.   And Dynasty Warriors.
European Truck Simulator 2 (+expansions) was so cheap I bought it again so that I can have it in Steam.
And it came with other older titles for free (Bus Driver, European Truck Simulator 1, Scania Truck Simulator).

And guess what, I'm going to be Beta Testing a Matrix / Slitherine game.  ::)

Yes, I know I have it and posted a few threads discussing the state of the game as its been developed. I bought into it when the price dropped to $60, I think, and a rudimentary AI was added.  Its definitely been improving. Haven't played any MP yet though...

Darn it.  Fell victim again to Steam's machinations.  I have absolutely fallen in love with Shadowrun Returns, so I suddenly found myself taking the 75% discount on the upgrade to the Digital Deluxe Edition (I need that anthology to find out more more about this fascinating setting!  I haven't been this intrigued with a new sci-fi venue since I first encountered 40K!).  Then I saw that the second campaign was 60% off, so.... :uglystupid2:

Another $9 down the drain.  Total damage (Gunpoint, Shadowrun Returns/ Digital Deluxe Upgrade/Dragonfall, and State of Decay):  $22  Can't complain.  ;D

State of Decay + DLC is the only damage for me, for the moment. Shadowrun is tempting but I'm not sure its my type of RPG.

I was tempted to get the DLC for SoD too, but I need to play it some more before I am sure that I will ever need it.  Shadowrun...well, I am falling head over heels in love with this game.   :)  The setting is just too cool.  Neo Noir (like Blade Runner) meets fantasy...what a match!  Now I know why this game also has such a rabid fanbase.  :smitten:

Thanks I'll keep an eye out as you have more time with it....its pretty cheap so probably should just do it, but likely will hold off a bit.

Never mind, I just spotted Legend of Grimrock on sale and got that instead.  :)

The sales just rolled over again.  Banished is 50% off and while I want to get this one I think I am going to hold out for 75% off especially since there does not seem to be alot of replyability. 

any opinions on banished? The one thing that has put me off is that i've read when you get to a certain point everything is self sustaining and once that point is reached whats the point.

Regarding prison architect, i haven't played for a few builds but have about 20 hours into the game and if you like management sims and building.... i'd go for it. The developers update pretty regularly. The thing that bugged me was laying the water and electric lines, sometimes i just couldn't get them like i wanted them and couldn't figure out why. Also I couldn't get the workers  sometimes to tear the stuff down i wanted too. Those are the only things i recall that bugged me and all that may have been improved since i last played. I'm not disappointed with this early access game at all.

Mr. Poo enjoy legend of grimrock, that was a tough one for me or maybe i just suck :)

Just sustained some pretty heavy damage. Project Zomboid, Age of Empires II HD, Rocksmith 2014 (always wanted to learn guitar), Banished and Rise of NAtions Extended HD (and it wasn't even on sale)...damn it.

I love the Shadowrun setting since picking up the first edition pen & paper rules long ago.  It didn't sound appealing from initial appearances at the time, but I was quickly sold once I got into it.  I even picked up the new Fifth Edition Core rulebook a few months ago, just for some reading if nothing else.

Just wish there was more gaming stuff out for it.  The mechanics in Shadowrun Returns has little relation to the P&P game, unfortunately.  The only possible future release I've discovered is some tabletop strategy game focused on gang warfare.  Oh.. and Shadowrun Online but that's just a browser MMO so it's probably not as heavy as we'd prefer.

Zomboid is pretty damn cool.  It would be even better if they managed to get it finished in this lifetime.  Progress is slowww but at least it's playable.

Heh, actually I've heard that it's a very tough game, which is probably why I hadn't bought it before.  But at that price I just couldn't keep the young Dungeon Master player in me silent any longer. :)

Alright can someone explain all the hubbub about Project Zomboid ... it looks very interesting but is still in early access so I'm not sure I want to put the money down for it yet ... unless one of y'all can talk me into it.  ::)

Like with 40K, I am really enjoying the fiction that goes with this game.  Harebrained Schemes has a 100 page PDF that you can download that gives all the lore, and it is really fascinating.  I upgraded to the Deluxe edition just to get that short story anthology, too.   :)  After that, I intend to hit Spells and Chrome (http://smile.amazon.com/Shadowrun-Spells-Chrome-John-Helfers-ebook/dp/B003MGK9B4/ref=pd_rhf_gw_s_sp_7_8_6B57?ie=UTF8&refRID=01YTEHRFEVB6GMQZ6B57).  Based on what I read so far, I think Shadowrun would make for an awesome movie.  Like with 40K, I really have to wonder how Hollywood never purchased the IP.   :idiot2: 

I figured that the PC version's mechanics wouldn't resemble the PnP game.  Shame, though.  I wonder why game devs always shy away from a faithful implementation of a RPG's rules when it comes to a PC conversion?

I saw somebody mention that a few years back MS released a shooter based on the SR universe.  I have to admit, that does sound pretty cool.  I hope we are on a cusp of a SR renaissance.  It took 40K more than a few years to get its AAA gaming legs, too, so maybe the success of SRR will heighten the visibility of this franchise, too.

It's on your profile but you have to explicitly request to join a (random) team.  I can't remember how I did this, but you can probably do it from the front page by clicking on the "summer adventure" stuff.

Agreed.  Hollywood really needs some unique & gritty sci-fi done proper.  Whether it be dark & distant galactic future or dark cyberpunk future.  I'm sick of the constant barrage of Alien Invasion clones we keep getting, the majority of which aren't very good anyway.

Geez, guys, I can't think of a single good reason to NOT buy Skyrim with all the bells and whistles.  With all of the mods out there you can get hundreds of hours of gameplay out of Skyrim.  Heck, I played through it twice and then I bought it for my son, and he's constantly telling me of quests he's doing that I haven't seen in two playthroughs!

There are even some attempts to remake some of the classic SR computers games in this engine.  Also, Harebrained Schemes seems to be running contests to encourage more people.  Shadowrun Unlimited is one of the recent winners and it sounds great:

-Players can buy DocWagon contracts, which allow them to respawn inside the same zone upon death. The better the contract, the more respawns that are allowed, and the cheaper the service charge. This is however optional for new characters that are having trouble making ends meet.

-Characters with high Charisma are able to negotiate for a little something extra when they are offered a job.

-Designed for new characters. Slower paced gameplay, with money "sinks". Don't expect to max out your character in one sitting, and getting started in Seattle isn't going to be easy. But once you get your feet wet, you'll be making steady money.

-A Taxi System that can be used to travel between all the hub zones.

-NPC runners are hired, and follow you throughout the world until the job is complete (or they are defeated). Players no longer hire runners on a per-map basis. Getting runners killed will increase their future hiring costs, but performing successful runs with them will level it back out.

-A Commlink System that allows players to call their contacts, such as fixers, runners, and of course the taxi. Runners hired over the phone will arrive at the players location within a few seconds. *The Commlink is accessed by clicking on your character, outside of combat.

-There is a basic journal system built in. Whenever you activate your commlink, a brief message will appear guiding you in the right direction.

-A day and night cycle to help bring the world to life. Watch the sun rise and set as you sit idle. Transitioning zones speeds up the process. Some encounters will only happen during certain times of the day.

-A branching story that will take players down different paths depending upon the choices they make. These choices will exclude other options, and create proper repercussions to decisions. And once this story runs it's course, I will begin building another. No need to import characters into a new UGC, you can just wake up in your Safehouse and kick off your next adventure.

-A global Matrix that can be accessed from any jack-points in the world (aside from run maps). Deckers can now hack into the Matrix before a run starts and open MagLock doors, disable security cameras, and more before the team arrives at the run location. When not hacking the Matrix for a run, deckers can earn extra cash by delving into data nodes and retrieving files. There is a certain fixer hanging his hat Downtown that is willing to pay for stolen data files.

-Six special matrix programs, that act like matrix-only attributes. Masking, Exploit, Spoof, Delete, Edit, and Browse. They expand the potential of the matrix, as well as expanding decker growth potential beyond the two skills. Players can now upgrade their Deck Storage to allow for more data files to be downloaded when raiding Datastore.

-A unique system hidden in the world that allows players to weaken their characters in exchange for special rewards, effectively allowing infinite karma spending.

-Integrated Tracker's Street Samurai's Catalogue. Fleshed out the rest of the items such as spells and cyberdecks to fall in-line with the same financial scale as Tracker's cyberware.

Me too.  I've been burned a few times now and I've learned my lesson - only buy finished games.  The worst example, for me, is Starbound.  With all the hype for the game and the devs' awesome progress updates page I couldn't buy it fast enough when it entered early access, but after a few quick updates (each of which wiped my characters) there's been nothing for months.  The developers are still engaging with the community (mostly to just ban people complaining about the slow progress) but there's no evidence they're coding anything.  Really disappointing.

Earlier than I expected, then.  That could be good or bad, but I'll leave that judgement for when it's finished and I've tried it.  :)

I stopped actively checking proposed release dates for games quite awhile back.  If it's plastered somewhere up front and in my face, then I'll just look it up after that date.  With Early Access, it's not much of a big deal anymore since development usually continues afterward anyway.  It's just more sensible to wait and purchase at that time, the main concern regarding complete content which many Early Acess titles don't have.

So far I have only picked up 'the Stanley Parable'. Why? Damifino. Just looks different enough to be worth a few hours for $6.

It could be just me, but has been very easy to resist for the most part...really hasn't been anything that great on sale or for any price I couldn't have picked up in some other sale.  There are a few dlc type stuff I'll likely pick up before the end of the sale, but I guess I had higher expectations of being tempted to purchase something:)

Or maybe finally my impulse buying has come to an end :)

Personally I'm waiting for CKII and OOTP 15 to come down a little more.  If that doesn't happen then, like Grim, I'll have resisted the Summer Sale.

I always have good intentions and get sucked up in the hype:)  It really is a game that I should love, but without fail there are always patches and patches after release, which for most games I don't care.  But when playing a career sim where it takes a ton of time to setup and play, I hate getting into the middle of it only to find out something was tweaked that changes the game.  I know the save games are still compatible, but if they change something that doesn't apply to the rest of my career, it makes me go crazy:)

Maybe next year I will show more restraint:)

I like it. I know the aliens are a bit cartoony and it's nowhere near as deep/serious as Distant Worlds but I think it's fun. I've been wanting to play a game where you start in the real Sol system for some time.

It's kind of like a classic MMO2 game that's been graphically updated. I had no expectations when I bought it and apparently the major issues got fixed with the update so I'm happy.

Sometimes a new castle or location related to the new DLC will show-up where there was none before. But beware the new enemies can show-up almost anywhere and may surprise the hell out of you with some of their new abilities.

I just bought Sleeping Dogs & all DLC Collection for 80% off.

Will they please stop selling games this cheap, my hard drive can't take much more.

You can also disable/enable DLC from the launcher, so it doesn't interfere with your current game. You can enable it later, when you've completed the first game or have reached a higher level. Either way, it will still load a saved game with enabled/disabled content.

I had to register with their stupid net service, which crashed twice. It requires constant connection, and seems to be very multiplayer focused - I couldn't even figure out how to play a SP skirmish.

Metro: Last Light Complete.  I've been eyeballing Metro:LL for a while and at $6.79 it is a steal.  I loved 2033 and never even finished it!

Kingdoms of Amalur Complete.  Although the last thing I need right now is another dungeon crawler, it seems like a good game and a lot of content for only $10.

Passed on Betrayer and Outlast.  Although they both look good, and at only $5 apiece we're not talking about a lot of money, I'm loaded up on the horror genre right now, with Machine for Pigs, the above Metro, and a few games from the Xmas sale like F.E.A.R. still to play.

strangely,  I found sometimes now watching a good 1080p Let'sPlay-series like a movie or sports with comments is more 'relaxing' then actual playing the very newly released game myself to that point.

I thought it got mediocre to bad reviews, so I never bought it.  On checking the reviews out though, they seem to be extremely positive. At $4.99? Sold.

We can have a contest or at least make each other cry...if you own FireFox or Chrome Browser......there is an add-on available called Enhanced Steam.  If you install the add-on and then use your browser to login to the Steam store, this add-on will give you nice features you can use.

One of the features is the ability to see how much money you have spent with Steam based on the games in your library....very depressing number for many I bet:)  I don't think it can include purchases you made of steam keys outside of steam itself since I don't know how it would know what price you paid, but nonetheless still kind of fun.  Beyond this feature, it has other nice things you might like.....

My damage is not really that bad, seems like roughly $640 spent on my library (certainly more from outside steam purchases)...although I will still keep that number from my wife:)  To see this total, install the add-on and go into your account detail screen where it lists all the games you registered.  On the right hand side, it will show your total expenses.  One sobering thing is that is just my steam purchases though, I have made far more purchases from other stores and physical purchases:(  Maybe I should not have looked at this:(

Go to your account details screen...for me to get there was clicking on my username at the top, then select account details.  Then look at the right side of the screen, next to the list of games you bought.

Log in to your steam account on the internet (Chrome) and then look at your account.

I was expecting an app on the Chrome main page...but no...you log in on the web page to steam

Yes - but not private beta patches. I think public beta updates and general release updates are available to people it is not registered with.

I'm saved from these sales somewhat since Steam has decided these last few weeks to make about half of my installed games not work. Some of them work if I go through the root folder, but not always, which is a pain. I'm now leery of buying anything on Steam, which I guess is a good thing in a way.

6 years on STEAM with a total of $597 spent on games 61 games which comes out to about $10 per game.  When you break it down like that it doesn't seem so bad, just don't tell the wife.

I took a leap on a few games I knew next to nothing about and I'm enjoying them quite a bit.


Sleeping Dogs Complete. Looks and plays like a Martial Arts version of GTA. Not disappointed so far. The HTH combat is pretty damn cool.

Horizon - fun with surprising depth and the one-more-turn factor.

Anno 2070 complete. It looks fabulous graphically, and amazing production-wise. I know nothing about it and played a little bit and got lost fairly fast. Time will tell.

Dragon Age Origins - Ultimate Edition. I'm looking forward to this. Heard good things.

Superpower 2. I got this back in the day and modded it a bit. It's dated and really doesn't cut it for me anymore. Pity, I used to love this game.

This game is good for nothing, except starting a nuclear war. For that, its worth admission.

For me its not the money - it is the time.  I spend a lot more on hunting and fishing every single year than I do computer games.  I spent around $2,000 on my last 12 hour deep sea fishing trip (counting hotel, food, gas....).

It takes time to learn a strategy game, war game (other than a shooter) or RPG.  I don't have the time to learn 60 game systems a year.

I buy maybe a game a month - and I have a big backlog of unplayed games. Once I retire, I'll have more time.

So it looks like I became a Steam member on December 6, 2007....so with my damage of $642, that is only roughly $100 a year of steam purchases.....guess I am a lightweight:)

Although over that period of time, the majority of my purchases have been from other sites, good thing there is not a calculator for total purchases across the web:)

Well I've acquired a mere 9 games via Steam over the five years since I joined (like several others here, I lost my "virginity" thanks -- or no thanks -- to Empire Total War); and of those, I've purchased only 7 of them.  I can't get that tool GrimReaper linked to work right now, but I'd estimate I've spent around $175 on those 7 games, for an average of $25 each.

I figured the number had to be at least $5000.  Indeed, I would've been disappointed with anything less.  :P 

Also, over how many games is that total spread?  While I know you've never hesitated to pay full price for a game that you felt was worth it, I'm still willing to bet the majority of titles in your Steam library were purchased when they were on sale.

For me, it's a combination of limited funds, limited time, a stubborn antipathy for Steam (although it's somewhat milder than it used to be), and an interest in mostly one genre (strategy) that makes it easy for me to practice self-restraint. 

In contrast, I think it's safe to say you have quite a bit more expendable income than I do (indeed, probably a majority of us), plus it's no secret you like games of pretty much all genres (or at least most of them).  Given that, it's small wonder you succumb easier to temptation.  >:D

Yes. Blackguards is a lot of fun.

If you like turn-based tactical combat then get it.  The battles are tough at times but there's enough variety between each one to keep things interesting.  Lots of customization possible as you progress but it can bite you in the ass.  I made it all the way to the end but lost one of my party characters due to a series of decisions made along the way.  I'd customized both that character and another in the party to compliment one another and with the one character missing, it left a big hole in my party's skillsets that I wasn't able to overcome.  I'll have to start again and go with a different approach.  Fortunately, I've picked up the DLC so that gives me the excuse to do so.

I would have to say pass on it.  I have played several games and while there was some appeal there, Distant Worlds crushed the game for me.  ES has a very clean and nice interface, however the ship spamming and end game just was not fun.

Heh, well, I love GalCiv2 and Sins, and I hate Distant Worlds and never really got into Armada, so take that as you will. :)  For what it's worth, I really like Endless Space.  For a start it has the best interface I've ever seen in a game and makes playing it an absolute dream.  Everything's just there, whenever you need it, and you almost flow between menus.  PanzersEast has a point about the endgame but it didn't bother me because the game's so much fun to play.  If anything, my only criticism would be the AI...I'm rarely beaten by the AI in these games but I have a really hard time of it in ES.  Great for multiplayer though.

It's also quite a beautiful game, both visually and sonically.  The soundtrack is gorgeous.  For $7.50 I'd say it's a no-brainer.

Hard to say.  I'm not a big fan of ES myself -- I just can't get past the combat system, and I've always found the maps to be disappointingly small -- but quite a few folks here seem to enjoy it, and it's a polished game with solid support. 

On the other hand, my feelings about the above games (mentioned in your post) match yours almost exactly.  So given that I don't care much for Endless Space, you might not either.  :P

Looks like I'm in the minority but $7.49 is a good price for Endless Space Emperor Edition. Sure the combat is odd but I enjoy the overall game. That said, I agree it's no Distant Worlds or even Armada.

If you already have Fallen Enchantress and Endless Legend sitting there unplayed, maybe you should just wait dude.  Xmas sale is only 6 short months away.

I've been having a blast with my purchase of Shadow Run + Dragonfall.  This game alone has made the Steam summer sale a success for me.   :)  It really is a fantastic setting - up there with 40K as far as I am concerned (and I know that is saying a lot!) - and the writing for the campaign is very good (I am talking about the first campaign - I haven't tried Dragonfall yet).  The only complaint I have is that the game is too easy on the default difficulty setting.  My runner has been chewing up the AI, even when outmatched 4:1.  I really hope that the "hard" difficulty setting is more challenging without being too frustrating.   :-\

Anyhoo, as I worked my way through Shadowrun, my mind kept drifting back to another cyberpunk-themed game that was truly excellent: Frozen Synapse.  Like Shadowrun, it has an excellent (51 mission!) SP campaign that features some great writing (it's also not too derivative, which is a rarity for video games these days).  But unlike Shadowrun's campaign, it actually has a lot more replayability because the SP missions are partially randomized (the core terrain remains unchanged for objective reasons, but the surrounding terrain varies each time).  What is more, once you finish the campaign, you have an infinite number of random skirmish missions you can play against the AI, or even other players via a WEGO-based MP system (the game even notifies you when your partner has submitted the next turn).  The game is two years old at this point (not including the more recent "Red" DLC - another 15 campaign missions, plus 10 SP challenge missions), but the community is still active based on all the challenges I receive when I log onto the MP system (FS has recently been ported over to the tablets, so that added a nice influx of new players).   Lastly, Frozen Synapse has THE BEST game soundtrack I have ever heard.  Example:



In some ways, I wish Shadowfall had the tactical combat heart of Frozen Synapse....

So why do I bring this up?  Because Frozen Synapse is 60% at $9.99!  Mind you, that gets you TWO copies of the game (one for you and a friend).  I urge anybody who likes WEGO games of tactics, or cyberpunk games, to pick up this title that would place in my Top 10 PC Games of All Time list.  It really is a fantastic game with a lifetime of randomly generated content for very little money.

BTW: Here is an example of a recent campaign mission I just ran (I guess there are "runners" in the world of FS, too).  My job: eliminate the red soldiers who are attacking a Panache Collective (long story).  I get off to a good start, but wind up losing almost my entire team.  Fortunately, my RPG guy manages to nail the last two red soldiers with a solid rocket shot:



The AI is very good, largely because the player has to play by the same Chess-like rules as the AI.  Outcomes are not random but determined by a number of "rock, paper, scissor" comparisons done behind the scenes (such factors as who is moving, who has cover, who has the range advantage, etc). Also, there are no health packs or special abilities that the human player always works to his advantage. 

Still simply stunned with myself....not a single purchases yet....the last days of the sale better produce some good games or I am not sure how I can live with myself by not purchasing a single game during a sale:(

No purchases here yet either.... But I've been in Vegas for the last 5 days so there's still time....  :uglystupid2:

Good advice Toonces. I was debating on whether or not to pull the trigger on AOW3 this morning but will wait for the next big sale since I also have too many unplayed games. Waiting a few more months will also allow another patch or two to be released.

Rooks, yeah, Frozen Synapse is a fantastic game.  Last year I thoroughly schooled Arctic Blast over a few games. :) I really like it, and there's so much to the base game that I haven't even had the inclination to buy the DLC.

I went ahead and took the plunge on Crusader Kings II at 80% ($7.99).  I've heard enough good things about the game, if I ever decide to take a break from managing the minutiae of Distant Worlds Universe (bought shortly after release), at least I'll have somewhere to go give it a try. 

For $8, I'm happy to contribute to June consumer spending!   O:-)

I keep going back to the Nascar 14 page...for $16 it's a tough call.  It has so damn many negative reviews, but I'm a pretty soft core car race guy so I keep wondering if I'll dislike as much as the hardcore guys do.

LOL!   ;D  It's actually not bad in practice.  The color scheme actually works quite well thematically, and it really isn't hard on the eyes.  And if you get the "Red" DLC, you can switch the color scheme to...red!   ;D

NASCAR 14 - oooh. I don't particularly regard myself as a hardcore racer. I rally like the genre, but I have no idea what all the settings etc do and never really bothered to find out.

It's not a terrible game, and for $16 it could probably be regarded as ok for that...but I had three main gripes :

• Grille Tape - absolutely no effect whatsoever. You should be able, from what I gather, to put 100% grille tape on your car and notice a significant speed increase and also a significant rise in engine temp...I saw absolutely nothing

Well...just raced my first race in career mode.

It's actually very enjoyable. I mean really enjoyable. I just done 60 laps at Daytona. The race was close at the start and as is Daytona kind of spaced out over the laps. There were occasional cars where I could draft and the drafting effect is cool and seems to work well, allowing a slingshot but allowing the car behind to stay with you. It seemed to me also that the drafting had "degrees" of effectiveness and the better your line behind the car, the better the draft...I don't know, but it seemed that way.

So I rather enjoyed it.

I wasn't entirely sure about the results or the format. For example I was 16th on the final lap and I didn't see anyone I could've passed (though a car or two may well have pulled in the pits)...but the race finished telling me I was 11th. However, when I went to the garage, it told me I had finished 15th. Also, it said I had qualified 30th when in actual fact I had qualified 4th. And finally when the race format for Daytona was

Duel 1
Duel 2
But I only took part in Duel 1. Was Duel 2 not available to me because I only finished 16th? 15th? 11th?

Anyway - that seemed to me to be what I expected from a NASCAR game. I also liked the fact that you could tap the cars in front or keep being tapped in the rear and it didn't make you spin...much like Nascar 2003 Season used to. And that the AI seemed to be aware of where you are. The two accidents in the race were caused by me and my "nervous" driving.

Of course the AI may not be so great in some other races, like Watkins Glen (a road course) or a Bristol (a very short oval).

There are some things I wasn't too keen on....like the pits. When you drive in the AI takes over and then you get the chance to make your selections...but you ONLY get the time from the AI taking over until you box...and it really isn't enough time...or at least it wasn't. Perhaps as you perform races and understand the pit menu better, you'll be able to make your selections quicker. Also there were a couple of accidents but no yellows. I don't know if yellows come out for all accidents, they seemed to for NASCAR 2003 Season...but the two accidents in the race didn't bring out the yellows...though they weren't big pile ups.

I actually don't mind the AI taking control of the car into the pits.

I could be wrong, but I did a run at Daytona with 50% tape and 100% tape and I didn't notice any difference in speed when in NASCAR Season 2003 grille tape made quite a difference. I also didn't notice too much in the way of heat issues...and with 100% tape in NASCAR Season 2003 100% grille tape would have got you a blown engine in a few laps.

I was able to do 9 laps, with some drafting, with seemingly no heat issues.

Was NASCAR Season 2003 grille tape effect exaggerated or isn't it modelled very well in this game?

Good advice Toonces. I was debating on whether or not to pull the trigger on AOW3 this morning but will wait for the next big sale since I also have too many unplayed games. Waiting a few more months will also allow another patch or two to be released.

I honestly don't think AoW3 is worth getting unless you're quite desperate for another fantasy 4X.

Rooks, yeah, Frozen Synapse is a fantastic game.  Last year I thoroughly schooled Arctic Blast over a few games. :) I really like it, and there's so much to the base game that I haven't even had the inclination to buy the DLC.

I have received FS as a free game some months back, but never really played it.
As far as I understand you can play multiplayer without having to be online at the same time, am I correct? In that case would you guys fancy giving me some ass whooping? ;) I am into that sort of stuff.

Yep, you can log in and out as you please, and if you have turns waiting when you log in you'll be notified.  It's a really good system.

What's your in-game name?  Mine's huwie, feel free to add me. :)

I also picked up Nexus: The Jupiter Incident at GOG. I always wanted to play this game and the mods look interesting. So far I have resisted the Steam sale offerings.

Picked up Battleblock Theatre, which is a pretty solid little platformer with a legit sense of humor. Also purchased Infested Planet and Company of Heroes 2. The former seems good from the early missions, and I've yet to load up the latter.

I've been able to hold myself to just State of Decay. The only thing I wish I had gotten was Divinity: Original Sin.

This mirrors the real Daytona 500 just about perfectly. The starting positions for every race but the Daytona 500 is determined by where you qualify, the 500 is obviously very different.

Well, I'm winning but Yskonyn is putting up a fight!  One of his machinegunners masterfully second-guessed me in the first turn and I lost a man I really shouldn't have.  However, in turn 2 one of my men died when the planner said that he shouldn't, even though I'd predicted Ysk's move perfectly. :(

Still...I'm looking forward to receiving the next turn and seeing if Ysk second-guesses me again. :)

You were lucky in the setup of our game too - there's no way my bottom machinegunner was getting out of there alive!  I planned and planned and every scenario had him dying to either your shotgunner or your machinegunner up top.  I got my revenge though. :)

For me Red Dragon is a much improved game. The ability to slow down the game makes it much more manageable for me than the earlier versions. I don't have the reflexes for clickfests anymore.

Crap, I just bought Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 Enhanced Editions.  I think this is now the 4th copy of those two games I own.

Still, for about $11 I figure it's worth it to just be at the pointy end of these games evolution.  Ghostryder would likely approve.  Actually, he wouldn't.  He'd say the enhanced editions aren't core enough.   ::)

Just a word on Tropico 5  - make sure your graphics card runs Direct X 11.

Although the quickness and RTS nature of the game gives me pause, its not the only thing....just remember really having hard time understanding all the decks and just get a hang of playing....likely never gave it enough time....I have a day to decide:)

Picked up Mercenary Kings. It reminds me a lot of the old Bionic Commando on the NES.  :)

So we're coming down to the final stretch. When should you buy the game you've been watching? I wanted to get Horizon but it hasn't budged from 50% off. Same with Dominions 4.

I thought the danger has passed, but I think I might crumble and get Transistor.  From what I hear it is similar to Frozen Synapse in that it is cyberpunk-themed, has a great soundtrack, and allows you to plan out your actions before the combat begins.  Think I am going to have to jump.

It is realtime but you can pause anytime to issue orders. In addition, party members can be assigned detailed scripts.

Real time but with the ability to pause at any time and issue orders, take a potion, attack, cast a spell, etc. It works really well. You can also go into the options and set it up to pause automatically in a variety of situations. I set it to auto-pause when any enemy is sighted and when my thief finds a trap. But there are many other options you can add to the list.

So far, I've only bought Unity of Command - Black Turn... I'm eyeing Football Manager 2014 and hoping OOTP15 gets a little bigger discount before the sale ends.   I am also tempted by Shadowrun Returns and its expansion.   I'm not a huge cyberpunk fan, but they look interesting.

My willpower held out pretty well for this sale. Just the Canadian Mountain Passes route for Train Simulator 2014 and the six DLC's for EU IV that I was missing. About $31 total.

Huh.  I've been completely indifferent to Goat Simulator until now - I hadn't realised it would be acceptable for kids to play it.  I'll have to take a look now.

For some, yes. For me the timing was always right. I had just completed 50 or 100 hours of play and was ready for something new in the Skyrim world and the DLCs fit the bill nicely. Always felt like a I got my money's worth.

Skryim is so awesome...the DLCs were worth it at full price.  For the pennies they're asking for them now...totally worth it.  A sinful steal.

Honestly, this is good quality gaming.  It's worth the asking price.

Could very well be....it drives me crazy though since it is a game I should love....I think it might have to do with I never know how to create and level up characters, never know if I do the right thing...I know that exists in other games too.....I know this will sound petty, but one part of the game I don't enjoy is when you have to pick locks...some reason I always struggle at that:)  Wish there was an automatic way to do that...I know that sounds so small...but I am easily distracted:)

Mehh... They were good RPGs for their time because there weren't many good RPGs at that time.  I definitely wasn't sad to see the old thin and rigid AD&D ruleset go after 3.0+ came out.  I was also regularly annoyed by the "You must gather your party before venturing forth" transition block.  It's not the only series to have slow non-combat movement and general click-wait-click-wait syndrome but it's one of my most memorable.

I've still been tempted to get the new version despite my complaints about the engine & mechanics.  I never finished BG2, but it was probably due to the glacial pace of wandering around at times.  ToEE had the stretches of down time but it's game mechanics were far more interesting.

Yes you should.  If for no other reason than so you can fully use many of the mods out there that require the DLCs.

You're over-thinking things.  Go with a Nord warrior-type build and use the default head.  Just change his hair or something.  You're going to be wearing a helmet almost immediately, so, you know, your face and appearance are almost immediately hidden once you start playing.

Probably true...but don't you have to choose ratings and such?  That is where I really fall down when trying to build the correct kind of character....I at some point purchased the HUGE strategy guide where it gave tips on building, but didn't get around to reading it yet...so all this is probably my lack of focus in really trying:) 

I just brought Skyrim for Mrs B as well  :)

It's chock full of info. I couldn't just sit on the couch to read it...when I needed it, I reached for it. Too big to casually read for me. That said, it might get you 'in the mood.'

I ended up with Baldur's Gate II, although I haven't finished BG I this time around yet, Planetary Annihilation, some DLC for CKII, FTL Advanced, Endless Space Emperors Edition which was only $5 with coupon from buying Endless Legends.  Probably about $45 total which doesn't seem bad for the amount of time I should get out of these.  I almost picked up Red Dragon and Rome II, but I still haven't put much time in the previous versions of these series, so I managed to stop myself.  :)

I have to LOL about this a bit.

Here we all are, nickle and dimeing over whether we should spend $5 for some DLC or some game with 100 hours of play time to finish.

Meantime, I just took the whole family for mandatory fun at the Hawaii State Fair.  I say mandatory because if I didn't take everyone then I was going to be in the dog house and the bad guy.  I'll say that was about a $200 trip altogether...I spent more on funnel cake than I did on BG2 Enhanced Edition.

It just sort of puts things in perspective...when you think of it like that.  Heck, I dropped $30 in the little carnival game stuffed animal game things alone probably.  Almost broke my heart.

So yeah, that $40 or so I dropped on about 1000 hours worth of gaming during the Steam summer sale...no problem man.   ::)

Total Steam Damage, 3 games. Think this is the most restraint I've had during a major sale.

I picked up Age of Wonders 3 today on Steam but didn't realize if you want to be able to play multiplayer you must link your Steam account with a Triumph Studios account.  That kind of got my goat.  Lesson learned.  From now on I'll add to my research what exact kind of DRM comes with a game before jumping in on a sale. 

I bought:

Divinity: Original Sin (and I'm pissed about it because I can't remap the controls so unless it's fixed, I won't ever play it.)
Shadowrun: Returns
Dead Island: Riptide
Splinter Cell: Blacklist
Blackguards: Untold Legends DLC
State of Decay: Lifeline DLC
Sleeping Dogs: Nightmare at Northpoint DLC  (mainly because a buddy did some voice-over work for it.)

I grabbed State Of Decay yesterday, but won't have time to play it until later this week. Couldn't pass it up at five bucks; it's been on my wishlist for months.

A question for all you experienced Skyrim players;

Is there a way of displaying speech as text on the screen? I've looked but can't see anything.

Hmm it's been a while but there should be a choice in the options menu to turn on subtitles IIRC.

CK DLC Old Gods and Ruler Character creator. Finger over buy for some of the other DLC like Byzantine

State of Decay- An hour and 45 to choose the DLC for this- any thoughts?

Sure, but you may be looking at it differently than some of us.

At least you did something with the money you spent.  A sizable percentage of the PC games I've bought in the past year, because they were on sale so cheap, haven't even been played.  So I feel like I've just been tossing small amounts of money out the window.

Sure, I may plan on getting to them at some point but I've stopped purchasing them until that time is much closer.  Why spend five bucks on something I'm not even going to use? 

I'm glad we have so many options that provide such quandaries these days.  Easily affordable ones too.  However, I've had to put the brakes on because I'm already past the point of being able to put the proper amount of time into all these.  Gotta start being a bit more picky.

Finally the blasted Sale has ended!
I don't even want to start counting my losses  :buck2:

Tropico 5 Steam Special Edition
Not a sale item but bought during. Had to order new graphics card to run it - an Asus GeForce GT 610 2GB (DirectX 11), which is a step up from my GeForce 9800 GT 1 GB (DirectX 10) It will benefit my other games too. I think a new pc is order too at some point but I'm a freelancer so this is always a bit of a gamble.

i managed to stay clear from Rome 2  ...it was not easy, but i did it Hurra!   ;)

No Steam purchases for me either although i did pick up a copy of Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning at Best Buy for $5 today after missing the Steam sale price so I guess that sort of counts.

After reading a few reviews I passed on AoW3 even at 50% off because of concerns that the tactical AI is not up to snuff. The need for yet another game account for multiplayer doesn't impress me either. I will wait for some more patching and DLC before buying AoW3.

For now I will content myself for now with Shadow Magic and FE Legendary Heroes.

PE for the win..... well kind of.  I was able to hold off more temptation in the end and I am happy with my 2 purchases...  Now I am ready to finally sink a lot of time into Football Manager (14) and finally jump in with both feet!

LOL.  Yes, really. 

The only things I was even tempted to get were the various DLC for Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes and the Blood & Gore DLC for Rome II...and in the end, I had to admit I still enjoy the vanilla versions of both games as they are. 

Yippee!!!!   Sell is now over, temptation gone....think I spent less than $30, more of catching up then anything truly exciting.....

19.99 total on Making History: The Great War. And that's that.

Uh...that's an expansion.  If you didn't like the base game, you're pretty certain not to like the expansion either...

I avoid Steam whenever I can.
