The thing I never could understand about Star Wars was Vader's real name was Skywalker and he looses his son to Obi Wan who hides him with his Uncle Owen. But he doesn't bother to change the kids name to Smith or Jones. Why didn't Vader just look in the Imperial Phone Book under, "Skywalker" and see, "Oh. There his is. Living with a relative that I should've already checked-out and in plain sight". :o I know. I know. The Emperor told him Luke was dead but who ever believes that guy. He's a politician after all. :P

Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru's last name is Lars. Plus he literally lives out in the middle of the desert on a farm. Nobody probably knows he's there. That is why he stayed undetected for so long.
In the new Marvel Comic series, we see Luke Skywalker go back to his old house after the Deathstar is destroyed. Boba Fett is out Hunting for him and they have an epic duel where Boba Fett does nothing but learn his name. That's how long it took to find him, his name was only put on the map after he blew up the D-Star.
We later see in a separate series, Darth Vader, Boba Fett reports back to Darth Vader and says he didn't capture him, but he got his name: Skywalker.
Darth Vader is Speechless. Boba Fett is kinda like: Ok... I better get the hell out and leaves. The next few pages is just a shocked Darth who is so surprised he cracks a window out of pure rage in the force.

My kids already bought me two lego sets of the Stormtrooper commander and Fett for my birthday, which is awesome because they know I love me some Star Wars. Otherwise they could care less. I might watch it at some point in the next couple of years.

Jar Jar was first. Then Hayden was next. It's why I wrote it the way I did. If I had written Jar Jar AND Hayden THEN I would have been saying they were in the same movie. However, what I wrote places one first then another second. Which, Hayden was in the second, so, grammatically correct.

Yes, the trailers look great. However, one must be reminded of two things:
1.) The trailers for The Phantom Menace looked good too.
2.) ...As did the trailers for Abrams' so-called "Star Trek" film released in 2009.
While I want to believe, both history and past performance forces me to retain a healthy dose of skepticism.
Either I'm in the minority, or the hate for Star Trek (2009) is in the minority yet vocal, but I liked the film. Sure, it annoyed me in a few ways (LENS FLARE, sort of JJ's JAZZ HANDS!). But I enjoyed it. The second film was mediocre, but once I appreciated Benedict more, I liked that movie more too.

Trailers can make any bad film look good. Like Fury for instance. Including scenes in the trailer that wasn't even in the movie. Booooooo.
For what it's worth I thought the Star Trek reboot was absolutely brilliant, I'm a huge fan of it.
Into Darkness wasn't bad, actually. However, it suffered from being the proverbial fruit of the poisoned tree, and it still didn't feel like Trek.

This is essentially a very well-thought-out argument that Luke is going to be a Sith Lord in this new trilogy...that he's given in to the Dark Side. I gotta admit, his arguments are valid (though several people tried to shoot holes in his theory in the comments...but, of course they did). What he's said makes a lot of sense.

A serious question.
If we had never heard of Star Wars and A New Hope was just being released for the first time this week, would it be the big hit that it is, or would it only be a mediocre movie. The story line isn't any spectacular and a lot of movies have great CGI effects today.
Probably not, but we've also been spoiled with some great movies over the last 35 years inspired on large part by Star Wars
Our local drive in theater is showing it. I think we're going to go on Saturday. And it's only $7 for adults :)
My roommate and I are planning to go see it Monday when we're both off. Sigh.

Trailer for Force Awakens looks amazing, and I'm glad George Lucas is out of the picture this time around.
I will say this - one of the best trailers of all time was for Phantom Menace. As a trailer setting the stage for the movie, it was nearly perfect.
The red carpet premiere in Los Angeles happened last night, attended of course by celebrities and studio execs and high muckety-muck types, as well as some media, and they're all apparently loving what they're seeing with this movie, especially the ending.
The cynic in me says, "But of course they would." When the vast majority of the audience is in the movie, worked on the movie, or have something important to do with the movie's success, they're going to be all about it. There's a moratorium on actual reviews until tomorrow, but I imagine it will be all gushing and amazing awesomeness.
I'm just hoping that amazing awesomeness isn't just studio propaganda. They don't need to do that. They're already pretty much getting a branch of the Federal Reserve at their headquarters, to print all the money they want.

Actually, Mayberry is based on Mt Airy, NC, which is about 3 hours away. Whenever Barney Fife was headed to "the city" it was Raleigh he was going to...
But there's a drive-in that a local entrepreneur revived out on there North side of town here, and they're normally only open in the summer, but they made this one a special 2-week run outside their normal season
We have a drive-in near where we live, too ("near" being 15 miles away). It's ALWAYS packed, though, so we've never gone.

I'm a little late on replying here. I admit that trailer got me hooked back then. I'll also admit that Episode I had a kick ass Jedi fight sequence with Darth Maul, although Mark Hamill had a great sequence in Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back :) Hey kids, it's Mark Hamill!

I was actually surprised by this myself when I went today...theatre had about 5 other people in it besides myself and daughter. It was during the day, so I expected less, just not that much less. The movie was absolutely worth it and likely will see it again with my wife at some point. I know a lot of people were not impressed by the prequels, but to be honest I have enjoyed every Star Wars movie, certainly some more than others, but generally liked them all. Although I would agree the "feel/story" felt more like episodes 4-6, which the originals will always be at the top of the list.

I'll say the same thing to you that I said to Tuna a minute ago, if you want a Star Wars movie, you are going to get a Star Wars movie.
I talked to my ex on the phone today (we're still close friends). She and her gal pal (both fellow geeks) went and saw the movie yesterday. Like myself, both are pretty much purists (i.e., the god-awful prequels don't even exist)...and they liked it well enough that they're planning to go see it a second time tomorrow.
I was gob-smacked, as my ex *never* goes to see a film multiple times in the theater. So for her to do so tells me that this probably actually is good. For the first time, I truly begin to hope...
I have to say I really liked it. Jar Jar Abrams should stick to the Star Wars universe. It wasn't great but it was really good. Looking forward to the next one. I'm glad I didn't know anything going in. To those of you who have yet to see it, avoid any information you can about it!
If someone were to explain to you the plot, you'd probably be under-whelmed by it. The movie's strength is in it's presentation of the plot that's not so different from any of the 4-6 episodes. It reminds me of Guardians of the Galaxy in that it's the same basic plot as all the other Marvel movies but in a different setting and with characters that you like immediately and want to see them win-out in the end. And they do, but at what cost and how? I left the theater thinking, "Finally, they made one right again".

I saw this in IMAX and it was my first IMAX movie. I have to say I wasn't impressed. I didn't see anything different from a regular theater. The screen might have been larger but that was it. Saw it this afternoon. Whereas it was well done, with some appropriately humourous lines and excellent effects; it felt like the script was a creative rewrite of Episoge IV.
Well I wasn't enthralled with TFA (unlike my ex, I feel no compulsion to go see it a second time), but I enjoyed it well enough. I'd rank it about equal with
A New Hope.
Whatever its flaws -- and it has plenty IMO -- it does feel like a Star Wars movie. Finally. :)

I was underwhelmed. It DID feel like a Star Wars movie, but it took so many plot devices from the 'good' Star Wars flicks that it felt like a rehash/re-imagining/reboot (which I guess it technically was, but still...). Not to say it was bad; I just left the theater feeling unfulfilled.
Maybe hindsight will increase this movie's importance once the third and final film (well, final for this trilogy, anyway) is released and it can all be kept in perspective. It's a much better movie than I, II, and III combined, that's for sure.
Carrie Fisher sounded horrible. Yeah, I said it. I guess decades of drinking and smoking will make you sound more metallic than a Star Wars droid. Age, too. :)

BC (although I think I may have liked the movie a little more than you did). While I enjoyed it well enough, I was not blown away like so many people have been. I don't know if that's because most folks' view of the film is a little rose-colored, if my standards are too high, a combination of the two, or something else entirely.

Personally, I think a lot of the hype and reactions to the film depend on what the original Star Wars meant to you when they came out in 1977. If you weren't big into Star Wars back then and the original trilogy, the additional prequels and Force Awakens would "just be another movie" for many folks and that is completely understandable. Of course I will sound geeky, but when SW originally came out, I was at a prime age where all the lore and toys were extremely popular and just about everything I owned and played with (toys, clothes, games, books, etc.) was Star Wars related. I probably saw each of the original SW movies ten times in the movie theatres because my family and friends were also heavy into it.
If I wouldn't have that kind of background, Force Awakens likely would be just another average watchable movie to me......so for me the prequels (I know people will shoot me) and Force Awakens just click with me in a different way then all other movies and I will always watch whatever they put out Star Wars related and enjoy them:)

I was a baby when A New Hope came out, and I was six when Return of the Jedi was released (and which I got to see it in the theater with my dad). So a little younger, but I'd guess I still qualify as being part of the original Star Wars generation.
Of course, while I've always loved Star Wars, I'm an even bigger fan of Star Trek. I grew up watching reruns of TOS with my father in the living room, and we both wept openly when Spock died at the end of Wrath of Khan. So that may affect my perspective in any number of ways, both directly and indirectly. ;)

No, Star Trek isn't for everyone. I long ago recognized that it's going to appeal to a certain segment of the population, but probably not much outside that segment. Not everyone is going to love it -- kinda like Star Wars. :)

Just returned from my second viewing. Had my older daughter next to me the whole time and she enjoyed it again as much as I did. I got a little teary-eyed this time at some scenes because I happened to be watching with my own spawn. People in the audience still applauded too. Will probably see it once more in a theater (hopefully IMAX) and then call it a light year.
Did you notice things the second time around that you missed the first? I did. I'll wait until I see if they're real hints at things or just my imagination before I comment further. :-X

Saw it last night with the family and loved it. Our geek consensus was that it was the best Star Wars besides the original two. Great flick and didn't disappoint.

I watched return of the Jedi again the other day and it was kind of funny to watch the battle scene with the ewoks. Still can't figure out how they were hitting the stormtroopers with small sticks and rocks and was impacting them even though they were in heavy armor:)

There is that moment when that pair of Ewoks get blasted by an AT-ST and only one survives - the music that followed and the reaction from the surviving Ewok still kind of gets to me. :(
The attack on Jabbas's sail barge, the Battle of Endor music, the 2nd Death Star trench run scenes, and the conflict (and music, don't forget the music!) between Vader/Luke/Emperor still do the film justice IMHO.
^I agree. With that said I think Return of the Jedi is the weakest of IV-VI, and I enjoyed the Force Awakens more. The Empire Strikes Back is still my favorite.

Well, Kasdan fleshed out the dialogue and story beats.
Lucas wrote a story treatment (with some key scenes like the opening shots on Hoth, and some key material like Luke's twin sister which actually got dropped in early scripts before returning in the 4th draft).
Brackett converted that treatment into a first script (and then unexpectedly died of cancer before she could even start talking with Lucas about the 2nd and polish drafts).
Lucas wrote the second script draft (where the idea of Vader being Luke's dead father first appeared, which got spoiled from a leaked draft by Future Magazine in 1978 by the way -- also this is the draft where Han first ends the movie frozen in carbonite, and where much of Han-and-Leia's side of the plot hinges on a constantly malfunctioning Falcon).
Kasdan's impression when Lucas hired him (in a time crunch desperation, without even having read Kasdan's first draft of the Raiders script yet -- Lucas said if he didn't like it, he'd withdraw the offer tomorrow!), was that Brackett had only done the technical work of turning the first narrative treatment into script form. No doubt she would have done more in the next two planned drafts, but she did the first big thing first.
Kasdan did have a lot of meticulous and direct input from Lucas, producer Gary Kurtz, and director Irvin Kershner (who in turn allowed a significant amount of improvisation on set), while writing his drafts. There was an interesting tug-of-war between Lucas, who wanted the film to be a short, punchy, crowd-pleasing cash-maker (to help finance ILM, Skywalker Ranch, and Lucasfilm generally), and Kas + Kersh who set the tone and tempo for everything that wasn't an action scene (though they basically rewrote the dialogue in those scenes, too). But Lucas admittedly did, by all evidence, write and build the
story of ESB, in a narrative sense, from the treatment onward. Kasdan didn't do that; but he did more than Brackett (aside from the technical chore of turning a treatment into a first script).

Note to self. You're too old to go to the gym after 4 hours sleep. Doc says everything checked out with the EKG and blood work though so that's good.
So, how'd it end? Last thing I remember was a bunch of X-wings attacking the exhaust port and Han yelling at Mr. Black Mask as he ran across a walkway.

Saw it this evening.
Looks like Luke went on a wild bender and disappeared. Nobody looked for him for 30 years because they understood what a drunk he was. That is what I thought after seeing the opening "big words" on the star field.
No real surprises to me. Close to a straight remake of the first one back in 1977 when I was 15.
Enjoyed the movie - but I don't see any reason to see it again.

Watched it again on Blu (first time with Mom and Dad), earlier this week. Just as happy with it, or moreso, as in the theater with Bro and the nieces.
Made it through without passing out this time.
I dunno. They already covered most of the issues I had with it in the Honest Trailers thing but it really was just a remake of Ep IV but it somehow felt more soulless as though every scene were produced by a marketing committee. It was alright but I wasn't blown away or anything.
I think they should have added some scenes early on with Rey showing her tinkering with her hoverbike and perhaps hanging out, pretending to fly in a ship's cockpit with some manuals in order to help explain her abilities later on. I also would have liked it better if she had some sort of plug in device or display to show what BB-8 was saying rather than her being able to speak droid.
The sudden BFF bonding between Poe and Fin didn't ring true. That could have done with some re-writes as well.
A little more set up with Han and Chewie tracking and finding the Falcon would have been nice as well as them just stumbling upon it was pretty cheeseball. Reminded me of Kirk finding the one cave on a random ice planet where Spock just happened to be hanging out. Little too convenient.

Nail -> head. I thought it was just OK, nothing more. I think the production team have done no more than demonstrate they're competent, and they really have their work cut out to make the next two films memorable.
The Falcon sent out a signal that they picked up, having been habitually looking for that signal since losing track of her years ago.
However, the overconvenient way that the movie (and most interstellar space-fantasy movies) treats spatial distances, makes it seem more coincidentally convenient. (To give another example sacrificing all plausibility for Rule of Cool visual language, the Starkiller beam(s) would not have been seen from the cantina / rebel base planet in a different system, and certainly its impact on the target planets would not have been seen there.)
Also, it seems suspiciously overconvenient that Rey was left in the care of the scavenger shop guy on Jakkar -- who wasn't doing such a great job -- who also by apparently pure coincidence (so far as the movie explains it) also ended up with the Falcon.

I have high hopes that Rogue One will help alleviate the underwhelmingness of VII. Though Gareth Edwards makes me very, very hesitant as director for RO. VIII at least has Rian directing, but apart from some very good Breaking Bad episodes (Looper sure as hell doesn't count...my God I hated that movie, it was so boring)...but then again, at least he's not JJ Abrams (a big plus, I hope). I guess we'll see.
I know, I'm setting myself up for heartbreak for RO, but its trailer looks pretty good. I thought it would be based on the novels that covered the X-Wing squadron, but this trailer barely had any X-Wings in it.
It is cool that Alan Tudyk is going to be in RO. Hopefully as more than a cameo.

So I read that Abrams stated recently the parents of Rey were not in the latest movie...if true, looks like Luke, leia, and Han ruled out....and not sure if being a voice in the movie would count, if so then obi-wan would be ruled out too.

I seem to recall another version (I thought by the HISHE team) where Moff nukes Yavin itself on the correct theory that destroying the planet would sufficiently wreck if not outright destroy the moon. Granted, the DS should have warped into attack range correctly the first time; but granting the navigation error, I can buy that you couldn't hyperjump it again anytime soon. (...and, maybe that's the reason they didn't just shoot Yavin and kill the moon by secondary action -- would have gotten them, too.)
