Paradox has announced that Warlock: Master of the Arcane has been released.
They've also shared the release notes on the patch that will be going out with it:
QuoteInteractive and aggressive AI. Lots of tweaks and improvements including but not limited such as: AI do not afraid to wage war on two fronts; AI faction can now declare non-aggression pacts and alliances; AI pays attention on units in its territory and units gathering near borders of its territory.
Tactical AI – improved unit selection for battle tasks (e.g. for capturing a city).
Tactical AI – improved the usage of transport ships. Now AI tries to get its units on a shore as fast as it is needed.
Temple units were improved – unique perks for all temple units was added that give more flavour of correspondent gods (e.g. Krolm gives to his followers a perk that makes them immune to curses and increases protection from elemental magic).
Summoned units were re-balanced: fixed the exploit that makes summoned imps more powerful than many damage spells.
Fixes in economics for patch 1.1: e.g. the population income in "alien" cities was lowered, unit spawn in neutral cities was decreased.
New global news types: Another faction has started to cast Unity spell; enemy Great mage has counter your spell; a temple was build; a portal to other world was found.
New sounds: Voice of Adviser for news and voices of Great Mages, generic news sounds.
Regeneration aura was made: Totem of Koatles now heals nearby friendly units each turn.
Bugfix: AI won't attack naval units by land melee units.
Bugfix: Rare bug with units resting.
Bugfix: hint will now work correctly during scrolling of a list by mouse wheel.
Fixed the bug that causes AI to research spell too fast on high difficulty levels.

As of yesterday they weren't posted (I was checking). I have a fairly robust quad-core laptop so I'm not the best gauge for that.

Yes but it may be a few days yet.
No rush. And no pressure. Just know that my purchase of Warlock hinges on your review :)
I went against my better judgement and shelled out 5$ for it (I already had ~15$ worth of BC on Gamersgate).
Seems really underwhelming so far.
*Still really hard to get any awesome spells or summons, not to mention units.
*Monsters just keep coming and coming and coming endlessly being a huge nuisance.
*Only 3 races to choose from (Humans, Orcs, Undead) and little in the way of "Wizard" customization.
*No Multiplayer at all and no Hotseat mode.
*No Teaming-Up with A.I.
*In theory there are supposed to be Gods to interact with, so far I have yet to see any such interaction.
*"Quests" you are given are idiotic, make little sense most of the time (such as build a 5th harbor in a city :P ) and give petty rewards.
*Research is mostly pointless as rushing up spells really isn't that useful.
*Mana is way too important, especially since a lot of stuff has mana upkeep (all summons, all troops for the Undead at least, etc...).
Christ, that's disappointing. I had half an eye on this one. Let's have some more impressions from any other guinea pigs there may be!

Wow, my PC only just meets minimum specs. It's depressing when it gets to that time of the cycle.

I love it when praise for a game is practically unanimous pre-release and then the truth starts to seep out within hours of the retail hitting the streets. This happened with Elemental and many other recent releases. Annoying.

Sorry you don't like it. I'll give my own thoughts based on yours.
Quote*Still really hard to get any awesome spells or summons, not to mention units.
The game is intended to be enormous. I've had one game going for over 20 hours and 190 turns. There are awesome spells, but you'll be playing a while before you uncover them.
Quote*Monsters just keep coming and coming and coming endlessly being a huge nuisance.
The AI isn't the brightest. Once you clear out monsters the game will allow you to focus on building your city. Generally speaking the AI players left me to my own, but he AI does seem to know if you're over-extended and will try to attack you if it thinks you're weak.
Quote*Only 3 races to choose from (Humans, Orcs, Undead) and little in the way of "Wizard" customization.
There are a number of perks and spells you get to start with. As for the three races, yes, but from those you can add more. Humanoids eventually unlock elves and dwarves. Undead can unlock the draco-lich, ghosts, and skeletons. The rat-folk unlock trolls and a couple others that escape me at the moment.
Quote*No Multiplayer at all and no Hotseat mode.
Agreed. I am very disappointed about this.
Quote*No Teaming-Up with A.I.
Yup, AI isn't bright.
Quote*In theory there are supposed to be Gods to interact with, so far I have yet to see any such interaction.
Me too. Later in the game you'll get some odd quests such as "Build a shrine to XYZ" but I didn't find any clear path to do so. Seems pretty random.
Quote*"Quests" you are given are idiotic, make little sense most of the time (such as build a 5th harbor in a city :P ) and give petty rewards.
These are part of the tutorial to encourage you to build. I haven't seen "build a 5th harbor." Generally it's "build a harbor) when you don't have one in that city.
Quote*Research is mostly pointless as rushing up spells really isn't that useful.
The game has a good tutorial, but I didn't see a manual. Some later buildings need research and others give it. I found as a general rule that it's best to create buildings that give you a little of everything, then worry about specializing later on.
Quote*Mana is way too important, especially since a lot of stuff has mana upkeep (all summons, all troops for the Undead at least, etc...).
Yes, Mana is important. The Penultimate spell, Unify, which I think wins the game, takes 5000 mana to cast. I'm still working on it and have about half of that saved up.
James gave it a 6/8, and that being a pre-release review copy with my impression being the biggest complaint was about the economy & diplo being too easy/simple. And notably that spamming extra cities has no restrictions, extra costs, or penalties.
If it has some punishing upkeep costs, then I'd probably consider that a good thing.

Well, I like the game. It isn't without its flaws, but with 25 hours plowed into the game, I can say that there's something good there. I typically don't play games that long.
I got a weird mouse bug where is was not responding to clicks. It'd move around screen, but would not cause it to scroll or or activate windows. However, I restarted the game and it worked fine. Strange little bug that I'm sure will be squashed. Clearly I've not put enough time in yet to nit-pick the details, but I've personally liked what I've seen so far. I foresee a late night tonight.

The big difference was that I paid ~$17 for Warlock and around ~$70 for Elemental. And I can tell you, I think Warlock is far more solid than Elemental.
I agree with Bison and LB, the game is fairly fun. It is certainly more bare bones than some games - you get three races and not a whole lot of extras (although the number of units, spells, and buildings is pretty nice), but you also only shelled out the cost of a night at the movies. I suspect that there will be some DLC that will add new races and new wizards to the mix. I don't mind that, as the game is playable without extras and more would be gravy.
Regarding the Gods, you have to find "Holy Ground" to build temples on. These temples unlock some UBER units that are expensive but also super powerful. You also occasionally get quests from the gods that alter your disposition. I think you could get more quests, so this may need tweaking. Holy Ground tends to be well defended by nasty monsters, but it provides amazing benefits.
Also, in terms of mana, some races need mana more than others. The Undead rely upon mana but don't need food. On the flip side, the beast race gobbles food up by the barrel, but I always had a huge surplus of mana. So mana's role depends on the type of empire you are. There are also lots of buildings that generate or increase mana flow.
The AI seems relatively competent. It isn't going to win huge rewards, but it defended its cities against my overwhelming onslaught of crack Noble Werewolves (that regenerated faster than they could be damaged) and Krom Blademasters (look like Conan, and they are a high-end Temple troop).
The one area that needs to be added to is the diplomacy. Right now it's either give me money/mana or war! It's a little to shallow options wise.
The monster attacks can be pretty intense, but I've not gotten the same from the AI wizards. Still early in my first game 60 turns in, but it shows real promise.
How do I clear out the monsters? they just keep spawning again and again.
You need to find and take their "nests". Each type of monster has hexes that they spawn from. March one of your units into the hex and the spawn point will dissapper and you get some coins for it as well.

Two others ways monsters show up are:
1. From Other World portals. Not sure how to stop that yet.... maybe youhave to enter the other world and completely clear it of nests too..?
2. Quests sometime just plop down a monster on the map.... had them show up out of nowhere in my territory.

Sometimes camping on top (but not entering) a portal seems to discourage arrivals from other worlds. However, I'm not sure that's 100% effective, and if it's on rough terrain, you'll need two units to babysit it since you'll spend all your movement getting off the hex (every unit must do something each turn - a minor gripe).

Ah, I should have known that. Thanks!
Three things that have frustrated me about the game. 1. The incredibly long load times with just a black screen when firing up the game and 2. I have to start the game twice every single time, because the first load I get the mouse does nothing issue and need the second one apparently to have my mouse work, which of course leads to 3. see number 1.

Well that stinks. I've not had a mouse problem.
I do like the game however. I hope that they continue to work on some of the game mechanics and don't get all DLC for new wizards happy, if you know what I mean.
Well, taking out creep-lairs and minor cities has really forced me to expand A LOT, and now I am fighting huge amounts of ever spawning monsters :P
Also, met my first victim...errr... fellow mage, Rjakh the faceless idiot. He was wise enough to automatically sign a non-aggression pact with me so I could focus on him later.
Still "2" more AI mages remaining (early on though I received a message that rat looking mage got himself thrashed, probably by creeps).

I've been keeping track of the Warlock discussion page at Wargamer, and people have said that there are in fact restrictions to city building: can't build too many close to one another (although still enough for some people to mention spamming cities to protect a resource point), popcap has to increase for new buildings, buildings do require upkeep.
I was worried about new buildings costing no initial gold, too, and moreso about just spamming cities, but in practice this doesn't seem to be as much of a problem.
Anyone actually playing it want to chime in on that?
Only played a short while but so far I have no problem spamming cities. The population growth for new buildings is on a per city basis. You don't have to build more building in a city if you don't want, just build on resources/specials. Food might be come a problem but haven't played long enough to tell yet.
The diplomacy is the weakest thing to me so far. Three choices, non-agression which I haven't had anyone accept yet, demand/give gold, demand give mana(I think that's the third). But again just very early in the game.
Yep, there is no building spam as they are regulated by population advancement in each city.
Spamming cities is limited to distance from other nearby cities and they can't be placed in the lava flow hexes (or mountains of course). You can still somewhat spam settlers but there's only so much space.
I'm not sure if knocking off one level's worth of population growth, from a city that creates setters, is going to change things much if it's in effect for all sides. That's probably their thinking, too.

I'll add to that. I have no idea what they mean by "building spam." As both Barth and Nefaro noted, city infrastructure is regulated by population. I haven't figured out exactly what inputs there are to city creation, but in the first 100 turns of the game bringing in extra buildings is somewhat rare. Toward turn 150 I found that, with good attention paid to shepherding all resources, I had a couple of buildings to create each turn. Keep in mind I probably had well over a dozen cities by that point.
There is some spacing restriction - you must send settlers at least two hexes away from the nearest friendly border to found a new city, and the land must be favorable.
Now the AI will evenly space its cities in such a way that you'll generally take fire from at least two castles or forts (which have ranged attacks) no matter where you are in enemy territory. However, if you're smart and don't try to take out the AI before you have a solid advantage you can send two armies to deal with each threat each turn and you'll generally be OK. The downside to creating so many defensive structures is that they soak up resources instead of creating them. It's sorta overkill. I find that one defensive tower on a hostile border is usually enough.
I'll post a screenshot for you to look at and ask questions if you'd like.

In my wars with AI mages thus far, I'm finding that they turtle up in their own territory and don't attack into yours. :-\
I've had the neutrals and 2 different mages attack me in my campaign. One attack was blunted by running into a group of monsters that where pushing into my territory. His whole force got smacked around by an ogre and some demons, then I moved in and moped up what was left.

Agreed. Not sure how it behaves at higher difficulty but normal isn't very challenging.
I kinda like it, though. It will take many hours to win the game even if the AI doesn't bug you.
I think if they do two things: 1. improve AI invasion aggressiveness after declairing war and 2. give more diplomacy options; this game is going to be a real gem.
I'd also like to see a multiplayer option even though I wouldn't use it too much.

Is there no MP option right now?
Nope no MP. Supposedly it's in the works.. freebie? DLC..?
As for the AI turtling against the player, I've been seeing the AI attack other AI cities in wars so it obviously has the capability. Perhaps I'll crank the difficulty up and see if it's any different. I'd be a bit disappointed if the AI didn't use it's full range of programming on Normal, however, and the only setting with that also gives it some big bonuses at the same time. ???

It's surprising that they would release a 150+ MB patch and not post a change log.

This game get's really addictive really quickly, I have to admit. Runs like a dream, interesting units, nice city building. The campaign is a little vague but enough missions are issued and there is just enough guidance to keep me going. Definitely has that 'just one more turn' feel. A couple of hours in and I am happily surprised. Why couldn't Elemental be like this?
It is addictive, but whether it has longevity is another matter. Though I'm terrible for dropping games or getting bored quick.

Man, I am *this* close to pulling the trigger on getting this.
However, one question I hadn't thought to ask til now (although it's maybe been answered already): Does the game come with a sandbox mode as well? I've never been keen on mission-based campaigns in grand strategy titles (especially when they're turn-based).

It's
only sandbox mode.
The "missions" you get are just some semi-random ones in those sandbox games. Very similar to those little missions given in the Total War games for some rewards. I'm often bottoming out my gold after building some of the more pricey advanced units, so every little bit helps if it's something I was gonna do anyway. So taking a nearby neutral undead city is just fine with me if I'm given some extra gold as a bonus.
People complain about these little side missions, but they're okay as long as the conditions are tweaked. Such as not getting the "build a shipyard" thing, after you already have one. It's not like the game has diplo or victory conditions of hardcore grand strategy games, so there's no place for some intricate ones here that I can see.
^ what he said. And get it on steam!

I suppose I should ask: There isn't a non-Steam version, is there? My impression has been there's not, but I shouldn't assume.
^You publicly shamed is enough of a reason :)
Nefaro I got that 'build a harbor' mission like 7 times in 2 hours! I thought it was just me.
The caravel unit is kewl though...love blasting away at the hordes on the coast from the safety of my ship.
I have also grown to love the fireball and lightning spells. Makes me feel godly.
Warlock seems to be pretty simple yet kinda deep at the same time. Just enough so it is not too simple and then uninteresting. For me I think it will be one of those games that I can whip out when I don't know what else to play.
It also has a sense of humor. Yes it can be cheesy sometimes but at least there is an attempt at humor there, something that I don't realize I miss until it's not there.

I'm not sure, but I think the game hints like that if you need stuff. A harbor can help with food production.
Or maybe it's just a kooky random mission. Generally stuff like that is low hanging fruit. The hard ones are "Build a Temple to XYZ" and you have no fething clue where to find it. Those annoy me, but (at least in the Normal difficulty mode) the penalty isn't a killer.
I'm playing in Normal mode now and I'm finding it just challenging enough, I won't switch it.
The harbor mission keeps popping up even though I have a harbor at my only coastal city. The other three cities are landlocked!
I'm not at all familiar with Steam, it seems like a service, so I'm a little leary of buying the game through it. On the Paradox website they say you can buy the game from Amazon. Do you need to be connected to the internet to play the game or when you download it, is it yours?
^That's the crux of the entire Steam/DRM melodrama. When you say 'buy from Amazon' do you mean through their digital download service or physical copy?
The game unlocks through Steam no matter where you get it. I bought it from Amazon to save a couple of bucks, and registered it on Steam.

^I played it via offline steam.
It seemed very much like a service. One that enables me to play a game that I want to.
Fwiw, I've sat and stared at my trunk of games that I own. It's not nearly as fun as actually playing, regardless of whether I've rented, owned, borrowed, transmogrified, or otherwise temporally repositioned a game to a more solipsistically convenient location in the space time continuum.

Steam is part digital distribution service, cloud storage device, patching mechanism, and DRM.
The DRM will verify the game's serial isn't stolen. Woe to those who share their game keys on Steam! Steam has been known to delete accounts of people stealing games. If they do so inadvertently, an appeals process (while somewhat painful) can be made and if you make a good case I think there's a good chance they'll restore your game(s).
The great thing about Steam is you can keep as many copies of the game as you want on as many computers as you want so long as you only play on one PC at a time.
Steam is also capable of verifying the integrity of a game's files. This is common where cheaters try to modify their FPS games and install cheats (wall hacks, for example). Steam can verify and stop cheating in this way, too.
Games can be played offline, but in the age of always-on internet connections there's really no reason to worry.
I have heard Ghostrider claim that Steam is a security risk, but the truth is a talented and determined hacker can get into your PC anyway. I've never heard anyone claim they got hacked through Steam though I suppose anything is possible. I certainly haven't gone hunting for evidence that Steam is a security risk, but if you're super paranoid about it, some research is probably in order before you bite.
Just played another couple of hours, including some turns with vampire and ghost combat troops. I have died and gone to gaming heaven. Question: are combat vampires and ghosts recruitable with a faction other than human? I happened to get mine from capturing a map hex. Also, how do I find out how close I am to dominating/winning the game? Where is the campaign progress tab?
As an aside my favorite unit all around right now are the magisters. Magical arse-kickers they are. And I have about 15 spells in my inventory.
I really love it when a game comes out of absolutely nowhere and just rocks. Been a long time since that happened.
There is no progress screen. There's also no summary screen to view all your cities. Both are sorely needed.
I'm gonna have to try this sucker.
Definitely agree with you tgb...seems obvious to include status and progress tabs...hopefully a patch will add them. Marty I am not sure of your gaming tastes but I am finding little to dislike about it. It is scratching many itches I didn't even know were itchin'.
I'm playing on the "Impossible" gaming setting right now.
The only difference I can see in the AI is that all the players start demanding about 50% of your gold or mana to keep the peace. I made the mistake of ignoring three of the four, and find myself at war with them all at once. And once you're at war, there's not much getting the peace back. I've almost crushed one guy, but another is making uncomfortable footholds in my space and I've lost a fair number of units which is really taxing my ability to fend off one guy while crushing the other. Once I turn the corner and take out the one I should be good, but at that level you have to take some care about picking battles because the AI will make things difficult - if only through brute force rather than brilliance.
There are a handfull of reviews of Warlock and all are pretty negative. Complaints are brain dead AI, very limited city building options, and a problem of setting a city to build a certain type of unit and pretty much being locked into that unit for that city.
Are these criticisms valid? Will grogheads produce a review? I'm holding off right now, but I also have not read a review from a source or reviewer that I really trust yet.

Warlock has plenty of flaws but it has one merit - it is highly addictive.
There is a demo which should give you a fine idea of the gameplay and there is a six or seven minute YouTube vid that is a kind of tutorial demoing gameplay.
We have a review and it may go up as early as today. It will be favorable.
From my few hours of play I do not think the AI is brain dead. It has attempted to take cities from me and even the 'beasts' - not even organized factions - can put up a respectable resistance. I also think the city building options are pretty deep...deeper than I expected. There are a lot of different buildings to choose from.
Yes for each city I have been 'locked' into producing specific units but I tend to like that, it feels more realistic to me. At the beginning of each game though you can choose the path you want your city to take so saying the player is locked into anything is misleading.
Rock, Paper, Shotgun has also been putting up some positive impressions.

This sounds like something I would like. I will have some bachleor time in June and July, this may fill it nicely in between hangovers! :)
I read the Rock, Paper, Shotgun review and it was pretty positive.
Seems like they tried to update Master of Magic and largely suceeded. The game is totally combat based. Spell research is very basic. No mundane technology tree. The opponents are wandering monsters which are very powerful and the AI opponents.
I would like the review to compare with Master of Magic which is available on gog.com
Could it be the list that Longblade first started this thread with...? (Or was that effectively a 'release day' patch already included with opening day sales?)
Yes RPS definitely like Warlock.
Jason the patch that LB mentioned was released a few days ago, just a few days after launch.
But it did not include some of the things we discussed above, including status screens and maps.

I never played Master of Magic, but if you give the demo a whirl I think you'll be able to make your own judgement.
I am really looking forward to getting into this game this week. I think I am going to start a fresh game since I haven't played since the patch.
So has anyone won a game yet? If so, how do you win? Right now I control about half the map. I've been fighting mostly monsters but have found the first of two other organized factions. Do I just defeat the organized factions and then I am the winner?

From my review:
QuoteWinning a game of Warlock is no trivial accomplishment. Players can win by defeating all the other great mages in the game, seizing all of the Holy Ground hexes in the game, defeating any god's avatar (which will appear if the player draws enough hatred toward the god in his religious reputation with them), or by casting the Unity spell. The Unity spell is particularly interesting because it requires extensive amounts of research to find (it took me about 15 hours of gameplay to get it) and then it requires 5000 mana points to actually cast (at 25 hours into the game I had about half the mana necessary but was closing fast).
I came close to winning while playing the beta. I had the Unity Spell researched but didn't have enough mana to cast it. Unfortunately the release version came out and nuked my preview saved games so I never got that far.
I'm playing a second game on Impossible, and the game is beating me. One of the great mages has cast the Unity Spell. I don't know how long it will be until he wins, but there's no way given my current state of affairs (at war with all factions) that I'm going to steamroll anyone anytime soon.
^And I edited your review too...oopsie.
In my game I think I inserted only two other great mages. I could go that way. Maybe seizing all the holy ground...I'm just glad there is more than one way to win.
And that I actually know what those ways are now :)
OK so I lost my first campaign when another mage (that I never even saw on the map...it was a large one) cast the Unity Spell and also sent werewolves to my capitol that were immune to elemental magic. Love the game though and will definitely play another campaign. What an awesome surprise!

I've got to get me some of those werewolves.
I was just starting to recruit some as the game ended :/
Werewolves? Some of my favorites. 8)
Also- enemy have a big navy swarming around your shore, as the AI sometimes does? Build a Ghost.. buff with waterwalk spell, destroy his fleet with one unit. :D
Alright, had a very successful yard sale this weekend and bought the game. Lovin it but I keep getting quests to build temples to tgods and for the life of me I can't figure out where to build them. Any ideas?
Temples can only be built on holy ground...and you'll have to deal with the Fire Elemental that is usually guarding it first. Also, the holy ground must be within one of your cities...

Is it called Holy Ground?
Yes, resource: Holy Ground. Look for hexes with a glowing spot w/ a pulsating ring and a Fire Elemental...
Holy Ground hexes is a bit rare on the regular world map, I think they're more common on the other planes. It's one of those premium properties. ;)

I think I need a +100 considering some of the monsters that I've seen coming through. :)
The 'other worlds' befuddled me as well. The game had enough going on in the primary world. Oh and LB how dare you not mention the Air Galleon unit...that is some dark sorcery kewlness right there. Not as effective as I would like it to be, but very kewl anyway.
After reading the review on here and seeing all the positive comments, I sprung for the game. I'm having a GREAT time! My thanks to all of you in the community who recommended this game!
New patch today too. Bug fixes. All saved games were getting saved at normal difficulty.
Yesterday's patch as posted by Dev over at Paradox:
Patchnotes v.1.1.4.28 ( Hopefully go live today on 21st of May on Steam)
- Changed Domination victory conditions - now it is enough to control >50% of Holy Grounds in all worlds combined (it was needed to control all of them before)
- fixed crash with click on news about new building in destroyed city
- fixed no upkeep bug with units in transport stance
- fixed exploit with clicking on debuffs
- fixed difficulty settings bug
- fixed experience gained by Powerful Lords

My current campaign is on normal, huge continent world,8 enemies. My Mage is the one that looks like a little girl, forget her name. I have most of one continent with an enemy to the east and one to the west. At war with both, and trying to conquer an Other World. Othe world full of red and gold dragons, fire elementals and various other lessor nasties.
Took and then lost a city to the western enemy on his continent. Managed to build a holy site which gave me access to some kick ass paladins. Great in combat but expensive to build and maintain.
Took 6 paladins into other world and started kicking some butt. Captured a bear den that gave some kind of super bear. He's good at killing dragons. Managed to get 1 city built there so far, and am farming red dragon eggs! Too expensive to build one yet... but soon.
Once I've clear the other world of baddies I'll build more cities to other goodies.
2 wars and my other world campaign have really chewed through my money reserves so it may be awhile before I can advance.....
Fun little game.
:)

City health does regen but it's very slow. If your city is damaged you need to make sure you have a healthy unit stationed in it to help absorb damage.

The current DLC just adds two unique units that you can purchase for your mage at game start. Lose 'em and they're gone.
While they might be some early strength that can become pretty good after all the xp they'll get (if kept alive), I've never used either because they cost so much of your precious purchase points. I'd rather have production bonuses or starting favor with a god.
I finally downloaded the demo last night, so I'll be giving it a bash later.
I hear they're adding the option for including the Unity spell as an insta-win. That's good.
But I really hope they adjust the AI's constant diplo demands. Hell, I often end up rolling them w/o planning on it, whenever they give me an ultimatum and they're busy fighting other Mages. :-\ Even just adding some extra conditions to the AI scripting of it could do wonders.
Does this DLC actually introduce a 4th race? So undead, rats, humans and lizards?
The description seems ambiguous. Grateful for clarification from anyone who knows.

The race is
already in the game. They're normally only buildable on one of those rare tiles. And they're quite badass, too.
Sounds like all this DLC will do is add another Mage leader who has the option to get just such a special tile, to build those troop types, next to it's capital city. Nothing big and expansion-like, no. Just a new Mage with a new perk.

Yeah there aren't many option when the AI makes a demand. It would be nice to at least be able to counter offer.
so...........
its not about the money, theyre both cheap, im just looking for that special game to play in the small time i get to play games............

In the 'Other site' corner (its been championed again over there and it wasnt on my radar til now) - weighing in at £6 on steam, ancient classic, adorned with a breathtaking LOTR mod (apparently), undeafeted replacement to MoM, the mighty Age of Wonders Shadow Magic with LOTR mod

It seems that they are patched to run in Vista / W7 - and although you can buy them as seperates, it seems a good deal to get AoW and the 2 expansions for the same price as Warlock.
And yes, its a bugger, because I have now played the warlock demo about 5 times, and I can see why people like it. If I were to be pressed to make a choice, then it would probably be warlock, subject to me changing my mind again, in true, indecisive, games buying fashion :-\

Well I just might have to go without lunch next week and get the bundle! :)
i understand its all about the LOTR mod
I still have my original Shadow Magic disc, and it runs just fine under 32-bit Vista.

Which is freaking awesome. Shadow Magic is a fantastic base game, but the LoTR mod with it makes for an epic game both in terms of length, according to how I experienced it, connection to the feeling of the books and films. Heck, I watched the trilogy again and read for the first time The Hobbit whilst playing through it to enhance the overall immersion.
I buy about 25 and finish somewhere between 0 and 1 games per year. I did complete the LoTR mod scenario for Shadow Magic though, and wasn't sick of it even at the end. I made it to Mount Doom in around 110 turns.

There are really only two reasons to pay any extra for AoW1 and AoW2 (other than AoWSM, which I guess would be AoW2.5): because they AoW1 has some different factions to play with, and because they have somewhat better campaign stories. (But on the other hand the AoW2 campaign is very long and tends to get redundant quickly. I quit due to a broken script in one of the missions, too. Never got AoW1.)
AoWSM is equal or superior to them otherwise in every way. For a random or custom game experience, no real reason to go with anything less. (Especially since the earlier games don't feature random map generation!)
On the other hand, now that I've (finally!) finished Skyrim, I may (finally!) get around to the LotR mod for AoWSM...
So.. uhh.. sorry to interrupt but has anyone started a new 'Challenging' level (or higher) game on Warlock lately? Since the May 24/25 patch that was snuck in?
I think the AI was once again tweaked some more. Seems like the enemy Mages aren't all spamming me with demands quite so much, yet my first neighboring Mage city put up quite a good fight for awhile too. Killed numerous units of mine! The new bolstered city defenses helps a lot too!
It's certainly improving. I sure Warlock sold quite well so I'm looking forward to more tweaking and additions to it.
I'm disappointed that the game has such crap performance for me. Still have black screen of death at start up which hangs around for 1-15 minutes. And now I get the same land tile mouse over. Last time I tried to play everything was deep water. Reload everything is sand. Cannot build buildings, move units. I'm so very disappointed. I've been following similar issues over at Paradox, but the developer doesn't seem to give a crap.
Sorry but I disagree with the Hex award given to this game.

The first time I started the game, I had a couple similar issues as you. The interface was screwy, and the tooltip for land all read the same (and would pop up over other tooltips & windows). After a restart, it worked fine though.
Have you tried reinstalling it some place outside of the Program Files folder perhaps? And your startup crash sounds like a video codec issue - perhaps renaming the intro vids will help you skip them?
Weird Bison the game since the beginning has run smooth as butta for me.

Yeah it's installed outside of the programs file. I've also done a complete reinstall. The videos don't seem to be the issue as I see them after the extensive wait for the program to get off of the black screen. The mouse issues just add more frustration because it will clear up occassionally after a restart of the game, but that has at times taken 3 or 4 attempts. There is a hardware/sofeware issue between my laptop and the program. I just don't know what it is nor does the developer seem to have any interest in addressing it as there are many similar complaints over at the PI tech support forum.
I do for the most part like the game when it plays. I hate the diplomacy options. Seems lame that it's a give me more money or war only diplomacy.
Anyway I'm not really trying to rain on the game love parade around here. It's just not been a good experience for me.
Oh blimey. I should have been sorting out my new PC, and instead, I've spent all night playing Warlock, 'tis a good game alright.

That sucks. I feel for ya.
I guess there's no specific hardware pattern indicated in all the similar complaints? I recall USB peripherals (or the laptop touchpad software) having screwy effects on some programs on occasion. Hell, there's a couple I've had that go nuts when I have a joystick plugged in, even though they don't have joystick support. :-\

If it is my laptop this is the only game that I have issues with and that is unfortunate.
I fired up a game yesterday at Normal difficulty and chose the Island map.
Man, it's a heck of a lot tougher than I expected. Just when I thought I'd launch an amphibious assault on another island...ZAP! They enemy mage would drop an AOE on my fleet and roast it. This is not an easy map.
Is there MP yet?

The Koatl Village (and it's Koatl units) aren't new - they're already in the game. But you could only build the Koatl village on one of the rare terrain types that you don't often see. This DLC gives a new Mage that can build them every game. 8) And they're pretty badass for their cost too - I've used them before. ;D

They've already confirmed MP will be released. Probably end of summer. But it's not here yet.
Well I finally finished my first game. It took over 500 turns. I can't imagine how long it will take to finish an MP game.
Did you win? IIRC my first (and only) game took 300+ turns and I friggin' lost too. Didn't take away from the fun though.

Yes I finally took out all the mages as everytime I tried to cast the Unity spell one of them disrupted it and at 5,000 mana points a pop I couldn't afford to keep trying.
It took a lot longer because I wanted to see what was in the other worlds. That added about 100-150 turns to the game. No way I see anyone in MP being strong enough to conquer one of the other worlds. You need a fairly large groups of strong units to clear one out and the other players probably won't let you take the time to do it.
The other worlds were tough enough that I ignored them for the most part.

I sent a foray into another world once. After that I've stuck to the Prime Material Plane (or whatever they call it in the game). More than enough fun there.
The game actually works very well on my desktop. No black screen or mouse issues so far. I'll need to play out a campaign.

And yes the one time I explored another world I was promptly jumped and beaten mercilessly by a very large force of nasties, so I got the hell out of there and never looked back.

Yup, but I mean practice playing the game generally rather than practice MP. If at all possible, I make myself familiar with a game before diving into MP, not so much to win as to simply provide a credible opponent. Given how popular this animal is, I'd expect to be eaten alive by all you wolves if I didn't first sharpen my teeth in SP ;)

I am curious to see how MP games go. The AI is not particularly aggressive even at the toughest levels. I think we'll all have some serious learning to do with real brains behind each faction.

I tried a few times before I figured out that out that I had to 'buy' the upgrades for each unit, they didn't get it free. Once I got decent protection and attack boosts I survived. Then when I had enough magic to make all my ground units fly with Vampire weapons I was able to actually clear them out.
Here is what I figured out in the other worlds. Make sure all melee units are flying before you go in so they can help take out the dragons that will be around in bunches. Don't use spells to try to kill the units there, use spells to heal. Ghosts kill dragons but the Red Dragon can kill ghosts so watch for them. Magistrars can kill Fire elementals in one shot so tkae some with you even though they don't have a lot of hit points. Melee and archer units kill everything but it takes time, if there is an upgrade available for them I recommend doing it even if it costs a ton of gold.
Some other things I learned.
Ghosts are the best siege unit IMO unless you can build dwarves. They are usually immune to attacks from the castle so they can just keep attacking without any help. I had 4 of them and they would take out a city in 6-7 turns.
Halbrediers are a bargain. If you find Halbred Hall try to build a city near it. The upgraded unit is pretty good too but expensive.
Anything that gives you Life or Spirit attacks are very useful, not many things have protection from it.
If you build a city near a portal protect it with towers. Eventually things will come out of the portal and towers will buy you time to get units to the city to protect it. The AI seems to go after the towers first then the city.

Towards the end I was able to upgrade my Dwarf unit. I can't recall what it was called but it was absolutely the best siege unit. I used it to attack a city. It did 175 hit points on the first attack. Needless to say the city didn't hold out long :)

Naa..not exactly. Sure, the interface is
very similar, but the gameplay itself is more like a fantasy-styled Panzer General with cities you can build stuff/units in and open sandbox gameplay.

Does anyone know if you install the add ons you need to restart your game? I was thinking of buying them since they are so cheap this weekend but I am about 150 turns into a game.
Since the add ons are basically new factions and/or leaders I'm guessing you won't see then in an on going game. But it also shouldn't wreck yer saves either....
I say shouldn't but haven't tried it yet. :P

I'd be extremely surprised since the only thing it adds is givine you an extra Mage selection option when
starting a new game. You should be just fine.
Besides... doesn't Steam automatically download DLC into your games, whether you own the DLC or not?

Extra Mage to play as/against. And a purchasable background option for a Koatl village hex next to your start city.
Not much, no. But Koatls are quite nice IMO. Being able to guarantee you'll start off able to build an army of them is a powerful start, even if they cost about double what the normal basic units do in upkeep.

I do agree with you there Bison, I find the 'Gimme the cash or else' aspect a bit of a letdown, but maybe its intended to be like that in order to force the pace of the game. In my last campaign, I was fighting on 3 fronts and had the hold the 4th faction off by paying up, although eventually, I extracted my revenge for the humiliation of paying his outrageous demands!
The amounts demanded are obviously purely arbitrary as well, ranging from trivial amounts to unreal lumps of dosh / mana, and have no connection to the overall strategic situation, but again, maybe we're reading too much into this - after all' 'tis a fantasy game.

Much, much more diversity than give me gold or give me war. And the constant spam of the "diplomacy" message is a bit much. They would be better to do away with the diplomacy pretense and just assume you are at war with all other warlocks.
There are no mechanics to get through in Warlock diplomacy. There is no diplomacy! I get the feeling that will be updated though at some future point. And the fact that I can recruit an army of undead, vampires and ghosts outweighs the lack of diplomacy. But that's just me.

Ok, I picked this up for $10 last weekend. Not my thing but hey, everyone here seems to like it. I understand there is no diplomacy but is that a game killer? I mean, from the description, isnt the story that all these mages are fighting for control of the world? So cant we just assume that no one wants to be friends because we are all trying to run the show? If thats the case, seems to make sense that the only diplomace would be "Hey...I wont attack you now if you dont attack me" or "I want to attack you but am willing to hold off if you bribe me"

Free roaming meanie. They sometimes come out of the portals to the other planes. Parking a unit on the portal seems to stop or at least slow down the appearance of meanies from the other planes.

Check out its stats for weaknesses. IIRC they are vulnerable to spirit magic. Only a few units use that (clerics and shaken) but they can take out a fire elemental in short order. Do not use elemental magic like ice. It won't work.

The Holy Word spell works on them if you have it. It's also pretty cheap to cast.
Interestingly enough, Fireballs/Incinerate are my favorite spells to hit Fire Elementals with...you'd think they'd be immune to them, but they're not. One or 2 Fireballs knocks them down pretty good, leaving them vulnerable to lesser units like warriors, archers....

OK, I finally found this place (I wondered where all you guys had gone--thanks, Brant!!) and figured I'd make my first post in this thread!!
So, I downloaded the demo and was very impressed by the "one more turn" sensation I got. Awesome. But, after having played the demo a few times, I'm a little concerned about the replay value with only 3 factions. I've seen some comments much earlier upthread but, now that people have been playing a little longer, I wanted to ask a few general questions as I try to decide whether to buy or just keep playing SWTOR for now:
- Are there significant differences in the different types of mages? Can we pick different spell type specializations, a la the "spell books" in MoM, or do most all mages play pretty much alike? I enjoyed only having access to one or two schools of magic in the old MoM, as it created real gaps in my tactical abilities that had to be managed around.
- Given only three factions, and a few special terrain features to spice up unit availability (e.g., Dwarven Villages, Halberd Tents, etc.), does the game suffer from each faction having one really optimal "build path" and not much point in playing a faction differently?
- Do different maps really drive different playing styles? And do all the gateways to other worlds get used much in the later game? Or is it easier to just focus on crushing the mages on your home planet?
- I know there are 4 ways to win or lose the game, but do you use different ways in different games? And does the AI ever beat you using different ways, or is it pretty much always the conquest route?
Any thoughts would be much appreciated!
I've not even bothered going to other planes yet, as crushing the enemy mages seems more a priority.
Each game start is a bit different in that the spells you start with are random, although purchasing starter ones is available. The rest of the randomness (start location, etc) doesn't provide a big variety in gameplay, though. The mages are quite different at start, however, because they all have completely different buildings/races (and therefore units) of their own to start the game with. They can mostly choose from all the same starter perks, though.
I've not played a good enough sampling of games (nor all of the difficulty levels) yet. So I dunno how much of a long-term challenge this will be. While the AI seems to be able to make some good decisions, it also loses some opportunities. The main difficulty I get from the AI is when they all start dogpiling me with wardecs so I suppose the biggest challenge is fighting against the AI zerg as it eventually builds up. You're probably even better off just keeping your exploration to a minimum, in order to delay the inevitable bribery demands that will be put on you from all those enemies you've discovered. In this way the Diplomacy with the AI is terribly simple, and resembles Hegemony Gold's "Bribe Us Or Die!" single-purpose Diplo model, which is it's biggest weakness IMO.
The build paths are generally of two lines: the line that improves your basic units: archers and melee, and provides and upgrade option to them. The other is for your special, higher cost but more powerful race units. There is a third more magical line for your Mage-ish unit(s), now that I think of it. And also one for your ships - of which I know the Undead have some unusual versions. You often want to mix & match some because one fun part about the combat is all the damage types modelled which gives each unit differing strengths & weaknesses. So it's not like some crappy RTS'es and their single build order IWIN "strategies".
I've only ever conquered in my games, but that's just the more straightforward, obvious way. I didn't even know there were three others... only the Research victory and..? Max'd out three Gods or something? The latter is just too difficult/time-consuming to accomplish that I've seen in my games, compared to other routes.
As I've said before, the gameplay is closer to a Fantasy (Panzer) General with some basic grand strategy added in, than the Civ game the interface so much resembles. Because this game is very much focused on combat and advancing your various combat units' experience levels (with an fun variety of units).

Heya FarAway. Welcome!
There are a number of different mages with different abilities and you can customize your abilities/perks, too.
There are slightly different play styles on different maps - I played the island map and it's much more challenging than an all-land map.
The AI isn't very bright but on harder difficulty levels it will gang up on you and the game will be much more challenging.

I tried to post a screen shot of an other world. They are brutal when you first enter. The manual says you might find an empty one, don't count on it. They are extremely tough to clear, I don't see how anyone could do it if they put in MP. It requires a fair number of high level units just to survive a visit much less clear one out enough to build a city there to get some of the more special items, like dragon eggs.
So far I've had no real urge to take them over. I need my high value units on map either repelling other mages or crushing them into dust. If I find a portal I'll send in low cost fast moving units to recon for lootable locations. I'll use the fast units to grab what I can or draw off the bad guys and then cast in imps or other low cost summons that I can drop at the edge of the LOS of the other units to aid in recon or looting. 8)

Looks like patch 1.2 is due out this week:
Patch Notes 1.2 - Patch is waiting for multilingual translation and should be uploaded to Steam this week.
Multiplayer and Diplomacy
• Players can now play Multiplayer games! (Steam is required).
• New Diplomacy system in Multiplayer and Single play: Now when a player sends a proposal to rival Mage it will be delivered on the beginning of his/her turn. You will receive an answer on your subsequent turn. The Diplomacy Screen was modified accordingly. Also a player will never know for sure if his\her proposal would or would not be accepted - there will be seen only a prediction of it before the message is sent.
"Lords and Artifacts"
• Mighty Lords come to your service! They can learn faster than normal units and receive many powerful abilities as they progress through level-ups. You can hire these heroes as they come occasionally searching for job, find them in monster layers or even receive them as quest reward.
• Lords can use powerful Artifacts which could be found in monster dens, received as quests rewards, gained and lost during battles, bought from Trader of Artifacts or smelted to mana.
Bug Fixes and Improvements
• A player may turn on/off Victory Conditions on the Game Start.
• Mages, Veterans and Halberdies got new skills. Mages can learn to cast fireballs and Veterans now have ZoneOfControl perk.
• Implemented a News message when you successfully research a new spell.
• Implemented a News message when any of the Great Mages controls a certain percentage of Holy Grounds.
• The Unity Spell cannot be counterspelled anymore, but its casting time was made longer. Also starting to cast a Unity spell worsens relations with all Great Mages.
• A Message "A Great Mage is Defeated" now looks better.
• AI now uses Dispels smarter and more aggressively.
• Teleportation spells casting interface logic is more intuitive: now you can select a spell, then a target unit, and then a hex to move.
• Fixed an issue: an enchantment cast on a unit in transport ship is now shown properly on unit when it disembarks.
• Game loading has become faster.
• Great Mages now think 10-15% faster.
• Settlers do not receive experience points any more.
• Fixed an issue when a player could remove a "self-destruct" perk from units summoned by other units.
• Fixed a crash on clicking on a News message about a new unit if the city was destroyed.
• Fixed an issue with the unit's experience when a unit is upgraded twice the same turn.
• Fixed an issue with game camera position at the game start.
• Fixed an issue when unit movement points and "cooldown" timers could be higher than their current maximum.
• Fixed some issues with duplicating perks.
• Fixed a rare crash when a player disbands his unit.
Awesome news. Multiplayer!!
That's a pretty big patch!
Not only adding multi-player but more unit types? I'd be a bit concerned about those hero units further making the player's job easier. Unless they somehow managed to shoehorn in code for the AI to utilize them fairly well, too. It already sounded like a lot of work, though.
I hope they have multi-player stable.

Warlock, however.. I've finished multiple games with it. I guess because it's more about your troops & the warfare.
Will Steam automatically install the update? How can you tell if it has been installed?

+1....... its a must, just to unleash fell beings into Gus' empire
^But my empire will be made up of fell beings! I cannot express the joy of commanding an army of undead and vampires. Just fantastic.
did i say fell? sorry i meant faeries!!!
unleash faeries throughout Gus' empire
Your fairies have no chance against my undead.
When are we putting together this MP btw?
Soon as teh patch comes out. 8)
Wasn't that supposed to be this week or "very soon"?
Yes..... still waiting...... :(
Don't they know they have a whole community eagerly chomping at the bit for this?

Open Steam

On the left-hand side all your games will be listed. Right Click on Warlock -> Properties
A window will appear with several tabs at the top. Select the Updates tab. Click the link at the bottom which says View Warlock update history. That should tell you what's installed.
^ Thanks.

Real-time?
AFAIK it's a turn-based game and there are no plans to change it, so it should be PBEM.
i think he might have meant hot seat - some kind of set up where everyone needs to be on at the same time

Yeah thats what I mean, not real time. I just had a major brain fart.
*edit* actual what I really meant was TCP/IP multiplayer. Not a lan game but where we all have to be connected at the same time to play the game. The way that Civ V multiplayer works I believe.
I'd quite like a bash at that. Wonder how many players it will support?
New Update is out!Patch Notes:
QuotePatch Notes 1.2
Multiplayer and Diplomacy
• Players can now play Multiplayer games! (Steam is required).
• New Diplomacy system in Multiplayer and Single play: Now when a player sends a proposal to rival Mage it will be delivered on the beginning of his/her turn. You will receive an answer on your subsequent turn. The Diplomacy Screen was modified accordingly. Also a player will never know for sure if his\her proposal would or would not be accepted - there will be seen only a prediction of it before the message is sent.
• Changed diplomacy effect of relations with gods
• Behavior of AI Mages improved with personalities and new factors
"Lords and Artifacts"
• Mighty Lords come to your service! They can learn faster than normal units and receive many powerful abilities as they progress through level-ups. You can hire these heroes as they come occasionally searching for job, find them in monster layers or even receive them as quest reward.
• Lords can use powerful Artifacts which could be found in monster dens, received as quests rewards, gained and lost during battles, bought from Trader of Artifacts or smelted to mana.
Bug Fixes and Improvements
• A player may turn on/off Victory Conditions on the Game Start.
• Player can now destroy his buildings from city interface
• Mages, Veterans and Halberdies got new skills. Mages can learn to cast fireballs and Veterans now have ZoneOfControl perk.
• New actions for Galleons units of humans and mosters
• Implemented a News message when you successfully research a new spell.
• Implemented a News message when any of the Great Mages controls a certain percentage of Holy Grounds.
• The Unity Spell cannot be counterspelled anymore, but its casting time was made longer. Also starting to cast a Unity spell worsens relations with all Great Mages.
• A Message "A Great Mage is Defeated" now looks better.
• AI now uses Dispels smarter and more aggressively.
• Teleportation spells casting interface logic is more intuitive:
now you can select a spell, then a target unit, and then a hex to move.
• Fixed bug with flying units teleportation on water hexes
Known issues
• Sometimes you cannot enter text - fixes with restarting game from menu
• Disconnect not always works well
*screams like girl*
Just finished downloading it now :))

Ooops double post .... Too excited
Having come off my first glorious victory in Civ, I am starting to develop a hankering to dive into Warlock again. I just noticed that my first campaign in Warlock lasted only eight hours...there was a lot of goodness packed into those eight hours. I'm curious to see how long an MP campaign will last.
SWEEEET!!! Now I just need some free time to play it...sigh :'(
Too many other fires burning right now.

Just "Hosted Multi-player Games" I'd guess. That or, "Opponent Finder".
With a description to the effect: "Find opponents and allies! Start, join, and discuss hosted multi-player games here."
Maybe that could also get the half-heartedly proposed multi-player sessions a bit more focus. :D The proposals within game discussion threads don't often go places, as it is.

So, is there any documentation any where that tells me what the themes of the different Temples are, or what types of spells their Gods offer? I've found the display that tells me their name, and what gods are like them and what gods are opposed to them, and it even tells me about their units (which gives a hint as to what their theme is), but nothing that gives any more details.
I tried searching on the Paradox website, but their search function is so God-awful it only returned about 40 hits from other Paradox games...
Christ this game is addictive as hell. It appears so simple on the surface but there's just something about it. I think the simplicity really works in its favour. It's such a compelling game.
Question. Am I right in thinking city growth is influenced by population growth, which is in turn influenced by food production? So the more food you produce, the faster your cities grow?

Yes, city growth (and when you get to place a new building) purely relies on your population growth.
As far as I can tell, city pop growth is a set number that can only be influenced by a certain spell (or two?).
OK, thanks Nefaro.

Yep, it's a great little game. I wasn't sure at first because it seems so simple, but after a couple of hours' play I find it really compelling. Levelling up your units and giving them better armour and stuff is fun and makes them really kick arse. It's going to hurt when I lose one.
Poo, in answer to your question, I don't think surplus food production increases your population growth (surplus food just gets converted into gold at a 1:2 ratio), but if your food production is negative then you start losing population.
In addition, spells can boost population growth while having a different race in your city reduces it (by 20%, I think).
I've never charted the numbers, but I think the base population growth is tied to your town size (e.g., it might take 5 turns to get from Pop 1 to Pop 2, while it'll take 12 turns to get from Pop 9 to Pop 10). There might be more of a sliding scale there where food production is involved (as opposed to the binary "growing on track / shrinking by some % based on how negative your food production is"), but I haven't seen it called out in any of the tooltips.
Fantastic, thanks for the extra clarification mate.

I had always hoped that they would provide a more open campaign for the Fantasy Wars stuff. Warlock is a good start.
The Fantasy Wars/EL series is just too straight through on-the-rails for my tastes anymore. They also feel almost like puzzle games when you're fighting the turn limit more than the enemy. :-[ That was enjoyable over 15 years ago, but strategy games have become much more sophisticated these days and I've become spoiled on sandboxes with bells & whistles.
Agreed. The turn limits on the scenarios were the single worst feature in Fantasy Wars and the Elven Legacy series. I very much appreciated the fact that turn limits were missing from Warlock: Master of the Arcane.

Use the free FRAPS download. It works amazingly well. Screenshot image and then copy over to Paint. Also you should just be able to hit F12 and Steam will take the screenshot, which of course requires you to dig through all the crazy named subfolders to find where it stuck your image.

Thanks for that Bison. I'll see what documentation steam has for that. maybe it'll say where and I'll just put a shortcut on my desktop.
This is the sort of search you'll end up with finding your Steam screenshots.
computer> C drive > Games > Steam > userdata > 53539926 > 760 > remote > 9200 > screenshots > actual screenshot
The 760 is where Steam puts all its screenshots. The 9200 folder is an example of the individual game's screenshot subfolder. Serious pain in the ass to find for the first time.

Yes, the game scenarios have time limits and because of this I have a "love/hate" relationship with the game. If the scenario is designed right the "clock" gives a sense of urgency to try and achieve a "gold" victory as compared to a "silver" victory because you gain goodies such as artifacts, troops, etc... and this adds enjoyment to the experience. Unfortuntly, some of the scenarios can become brutal where you face a overwhelming forces you have to beat in a certain time frame and this is when the game can become a chore instead of being fun. But for $3.75, its a hell of a lot of gaming (one full game and three expansions/micro games).
Both Warlock and Elven Legacy were created by the same team but I still think Elven Legacy is more polished with a background story, cut scenes, better graphics (I Think), etc...

I enjoyed
Fantasy General, I mean
Fantasy Wars a lot when I started playing it. But, after a while, the grind of competing against the clock got a bit repititive. It's a very interesting fantasy adaptation of the
Panzer General mechanics, but the game play just isn't very different, and after a while, I started to develop a "been there, done that" sense.
I made it about 90% through the first campaign before giving up. I could only say I'd completed one of those campaigns if I'd actually lost the scenario, I guess... 8)
I won't tell anyone :)

Probably takes a long time to research since nobody wants to examine it. :P
Two new DLC packs have just arrived on Gamersgate. They are not also on Steam at the time of writing.
Master of Artifacts (DLC)The ancient and almost forgotten art of making artifacts returns to Ardania. Now every Great Mage can create powerful artifacts imbued with spells, abilities, or even strength of the gods!
Features
- Using special spells artifacts can be created
- Special units of lords can be given artifacts (which will be available via free patch)
- Artifacts can be found in monster dens, received as quests rewards, gained and lost during battles, bought from Trader of Artifacts or smelted to mana
Return of the Elves (DLC)The elves from the knightly order of Arethi return to Ardania. They come not to serve as they did in the past but to conquer. They bring along the True Knowledge, and intend to share its' light with everyone who will accept it, willingly or otherwise.
Features
- New race of the Arethi Elves with all its might and glory:
- 18 new units
- 20 brand new city buildings
- Additional new perks and abilities
- New Great Mage – Grand Master Amberon the Dark.
- New perks for Great mages:
- Glorious Tactician - Increases the attack power of all units of a Great mage.
- Academician – Increases Research point production.
So artifact creation (just like Master of Magic maybe?) and a new race. Also, I like a lot that we have a new race. Having only 3, very different to one another but still only 3, felt too few.
Also, a new patch:
patch notes 1.2.2 information• The method of land generation was changed so that some land types (like volcanic) now would be created as small patches regardless of climate.
• Fixed problem with loading of Multiplayer save games. (old saves are still valid)
• Ballista unit became a bit tougher and cheaper.
• When starting a saved multiplayer game the missing players will be replaced with AI.
• Monster lair spawn events are more logical now, and a few more were added.
• Multiplayer Lobby now shows the total number of players in it (including playing).
• Quest and Loot windows became a bit wider to better show long units and artifacts names.
• Now a player cannot disable a building manually – only demolish (or activate if disabled).
• The hint added – the reasons why the building cannot be activated.
• Now when a player closes the "Select target Mage" window the spell is automatically cancelled.
• Fixed the issue when a player could receive a quest to destroy an entire Monster faction.
• Fixed the issue when a player unit could not be set to Sentry mode (or sleep mode).
• Fixed a crash in AI turn.
• Fixed the bug when a Portal could spawn on top of a city.
• Fixed the bug when a player could get the same spell in the research window twice.
• Fixed the AI faction global spell casting.
• Fixed some misprints.
Master of Artifacts is available on Gamersgate, and even though it doesn't appear as a purchasable item on Steam, I was able to register and download it. I haven't tried the Elves one yet.
my warlock is updating itself on steam as we speak - i dont know whats come out
Probably the patch if you didn't order the DLC. I just got Rise of the Elves from Gamersgate as well (thank you, blue coins). Again, it registered and downloaded from Steam.

Today only (2 August 2012) Warlock: Master of the Arcane can be purchased from GamersGate (http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-WLMA/warlock-master-of-the-arcane) for $4.99 U.S.
Well, that did it. I caved. And while checking my GG Shelf I saw a game I'd purchased which i have no recollection of getting. It was dirt cheap and it is some sort of wargame but I just don't remember it at all. Anyone else have that issue? There's just too many damn games at firesale prices getting thrown against the wall these days that I've lost track... :o

Yeah, I've started thinking of my game collection like a wine cabinet. When I see a good game at a good price I buy it, I don't worry about when or if I'm going to drink it. Later on, when I visit the cabinet, I'm sometimes very pleasantly surprised. Games too can improve with age, through patching, expansions, DLC and mods.
Thats a really good way to think of it ... and to justify buying tons of games ::)
Damn you and your logic Svend...I need someone to tell me to stop buying! Not that I would listen :/

That's funny. Not a bad way of thinking about it. My wife chuckled when I shared your story :)
