Like me, some of you are die-hard Marvel movie fans. So I though that I would share this with you, in case you are interested and unaware. The web-page touches on Avengers 2, along with the next Captain America (now filming) and other tidbits.

I am not an avid comic book reader (I stopped reading comics around the time that I was 9 years old), so I appreciated the level of detail (provided by the cinemablend website) that allowed me to research the comic characters background, and get a solid sense of where the Marvel movies will be going with the Avengers characters franchise, that I so love.

I have a confession to make here today.....
I have not yet watched the Avengers. I even have it on DVD. The DVD is sitting next to the DVD player and has been for quite some time. It's sad but true.
Wow. I mean... wow! Cap utters one of the greatest, dead-pan orders ever: "Hulk, smash."

I want to know how they're going to introduce Ultron w/o introducing Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne first.
I mean, seriously... You can't introduce Batman without killing his parents. You can't introduce Ultron w/o the reason for Ultron's existence.
Looks like they're going to introduce Hank Pym through the Ant Man movie
http://io9.com/edgar-wright-confirms-well-meet-hank-pym-in-ant-man-884404416
Which still makes no sense, because the Ant-Man movie happens after Av2.
(Also, technically the 2008 Hulk movie wasn't a sequel to the Ang Lee film, it only has a few similarities to how that film ended for sake of pseudo-continuity. The origin and action and characterizations pre-film are almost entirely different. It was a reboot that simply skipped the origin events, like they happened in a previous movie.)
I was a little bent, ok, a lot bent, that Pym and Van Dyne weren't in the first Avengers. But you have to know who Pym is before Ultron. Period.
You have to know who Janet is, too...

Take the first one, make it 30% less entertaining and interesting, then add 10 additional parts of boredom.
^^ Also make it effectively a reboot.
On the other hand, make it with Nicholas Cage dressed up in facepaint and ping-pong balls so he can act like a shaman having a spiritual fit, and paint GR's face over that.
On the other hand, shoot it all at a high shutter speed while rolling the camera around on a skateboard while drinking high-caffeine sodas.
On the other hand, let Ghost Rider flame up a construction crane for the finale.
On the other hand, film the whole thing in Poland, and set it there, too, for no clear reason.
(Disclaimer: I haven't actually watched GRnot-2. Or the first movie either for that matter. But I read a lot of things about both movies.)
Meanwhile, apparently Ultron is going to be derived from Stark's Iron Man work (which is why they've been designing his suits to look a bit like Ultron all along). This makes some amount of sense with the MovieU built so far, even though it breaks the Pym connection (and eliminates one of the interesting parts of Pym's character/story), because Jarvis took over a bunch of Iron Man suits for the finale of IM3, effectively becoming Iron Man -- right before something happened that might convince Jarvis 'he' should take over and operate suit construction without telling Tony. (I don't want to spoil things too much for anyone who hasn't watched IM3 yet -- it's coming out on Blu/DVD/rent very soon, so whoever that is will have a chance to see what I mean.)
Messing with canon pisses me off. I don't mind minor tweaks, but, wholesale changes for the sake of what Hollywood determines is, "a good story," f*cking makes me mad! The story was already, "good," which is why we like it to begin with.
I don't mind messing with canon so long as (1) the adjustment makes sense in the context of the alternate work; and (2) provides a benefit equivalent to what it replaced (which can be very subjective, I admit); and (3) it's clear that this is an alternate work.
Having Jarvis become Ultron after learning to work the Iron Man suits, and in the aftermath of Tony's decision at the end of IM3, makes sense to me. (Which also explains why the thief guy and not Henry Pym really will be Ant Man in the movie -- with Pym's main connection to the Avengers property severed, someone else can be Ant Man or even Giant Man. How Janet factors into this, I haven't a clue, but she was originally going to be part of the Avengers movie somehow as Wasp without Pym being A/GM.)
It provides a benefit equivalent to what it replaced, possibly even moreso, because Tony is already an established character in the Movieverse, and the Ultron concept fits even better into his characteristic theme of people misusing his tech. (Which is exactly why Tony has already been connected to the creation of Ultron along with Pym in some other Avenger iterations recently. Maybe even in the original Ultron canon, if via retcon.)
And it's clear that the Movieverse is an alternate work.
So for me, all criteria are satisfied. :)
Jason, have you read anything that indicates the alternate Ultron origins story? Or are you basing it on what you've seen from the films to this point? Everything you say makes sense, but I haven't seen it advanced anywhere else.
I'd like to see them keep the Hank Pym/Ultron connection, but I'm terribly concerned about "canon" in comic-based movies. There are so many parallel universes, alternate timelines, reboots, etc. that idea of a definitive canon seems pointless.
While that's mostly true, there's no canon that I'm aware of that contradicts Pym creating Ultron to show off. Who he's showing off for may vary on occasion, but the fact that he is doesn't change.

I hear ya. Personally I'd rather they keep the Pym creation story, but it's not a deal breaker for me if they don't in the next movie.
The Avengers is kind of a sore spot for me. Of all the series I have read from Marvel, the Avengers has always been my favorite. At various times I have had a hundred plus consecutive issue run and anywhere I happen to be that has back issues invariably has one or two that I don't have and get snatched up immediately. So, when you start moving stuff around and blatantly disregarding what is already there, I get a little bent. Which isn't to say that I don't understand why they do it. The whole point of making the movie is for it to make bank and you have to appeal to the broadest possible audience. But as a die hard fan, I would like to see my stories writ large AND intact.
I've got every Avengers issue from the original run starting at about 108 or so, until the end of the first edition. I've got another 40 or so before 108, too. I think my oldest one is #8 or so, but they're out in the man-cave and I'm not going digging for them. I have every issue of WCA and SA, and most of the continuity-connected LS's too - Vision/Witch, Wonder Man, Hawkeye, etc. Most of the rebooted Avengers stuff from the past 5 years I've got in the book collections b/c they're easier to store.

I have indeed seen it, but I don't recall where. Consequently, neither can I recall if what I saw was informed speculation, to be fair. Um, yay if Ultron isn't tied to anyone instead of to someone who only shows up
after Av2??

Unless we're talking about history, or a single author (or group) making a (literally) authoritative declaration of what counts as canon in his/her/their own work, the idea of a definitive canon
is pointless.
But Gundam would be an example of multiple strong definitive canons, most based on one superior originating canon (the Universal Century with the One Year War kicking off the storylines). Even if Tomino hadn't eventually taken an audacious step to gather all the alternate universe canons into one overarching canon (with his sole AU series
Turn-A Gundam), the multiple canons would still work, each with some real respect to previous canons and to the originating canon.
(um, spoiler for Turn-A Gundam, I guess... ;) )

I wouldn't call what he does in the EMH animated series "showing off" to anyone, but be that as it may. All that has to happen for
that to be a factor, is for Jarvis to secretly hire Hank pretending to be Tony (and/or Pepper) to create a new adamantium body to inhabit and operate in. Pym doesn't even really have to appear in the movie for that to happen, just be a mention somewhere that he's the one who did it.
The
personal stake in what happens with Ultron, is what counts to me more with Hank's
personal story. I'm worried they aren't going to be able to get
that into the movie series now. It also worries me that they're going straight for the Ant-Man equipment-theft origin story in his origin/solo movie after Av2, since that by its nature tends to marginalize Pym again.
Nevertheless, if they change the Ultron connection largely to Tony, that does fit my criteria for accepting a legitimate canon change.
It just occurred to me that the writers might not have wanted to emphasize two (or three now with Banner) super-smart scientists on the team, and didn't want to expose themselves to Pym's notorious baggage of being a wife-beater (undeserved though that largely is).
I'm with Pratt on this one.
If Marvel, in print, can change the "canon" to reboot a comic franchise to increase consumption and sales, than why can't they do/ allow it in film?
So long as the story flows and provides entertainment, I'm fine with it.
That being said, except for buying 2 comics this past summer for 40Jr., I haven't bought a comic since 1974. Therefore I have no vested interest in the canon. But I do have a vested interest in being entertained at the movies. Everything I know about Ultron I've read here, in entertainment news websites, or in Wikipedia.
Doh!!, wrong thread.! :o
I just learned some interesting Marvel canon history yesterday while catching up with CinemaSins (http://www.youtube.com/user/CinemaSins?feature=watch) on YouTube; some other channel has gotten popular recently discussing superhero and supervillain origins, so YT figured I'd be interested and showed it on the sidebar. Hey, there's Ultron! Out of curiosity I clicked it, since while I know the "canon" origin of Ultron I was curious how far back it went in Avengers history.
Turns out, the original canon origin of Ultron was that Jarvis the butler built him as a henchman after secretly turning supervillain! (Using Iron Man technology apparently.)
Not. Kidding. And this is long after Henry Pym (and Janet for that matter) had joined the team.
Then toward the end of that story arc, the writers decided the fans weren't happy with Jarvis having suddenly turned supervillain, so they tweaked the story to have Jarvis brainwashed by Ultron. (Ultron also originally appeared in that story arc as the Crimson Shadow or something like that, a mysterious figure who looked a lot like the Phantom Stranger except the outfit was red. So keep an eye out for that in the next movie, as it might be an original continuity nod.)
But that left Ultron without an actual origin explanation. Some issues later the writers decided that Pym had originally built Ultron, but that the reason Pym didn't remember is because Ultron had given him amnesia.
In other words, what we all think of (and technically is) official canon about Pym and Ultron, was itself an official retcon of original canon -- the original canon being that Jarvis had betrayed the team and built Ultron as his minion to wipe them out (disguising Ultron as a crimson human supervillain of some sort. I'm not going to be overly surprised if this is how James Spader will get to play "human" in the movie, introducing Ultron.)
The dickens you say??!! :o
Paul Rudd will be Ant-Man :o

Most of the Marvel castings are meh to blah...but Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark...that was a slam-dunk.
Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg were all great casting choices. I recently rewatched the first Tobey Maguire Spiderman and the casting in that was solid. Wilhem DaFoe was a pretty awesome choice for Green Goblin.
I like Paul Rudd. He seems like an odd choice for Ant-Man, but I could work.
As an unqualified Avengers fanboi, I say that Hank Pym's character should be well captured by Rudd. As long as they aren't playing it for laughs.

I hope Thor's not late this time.
Just thinking about this the other day. Another thing I think that made Avengers great is that the actors didn't seem to trying to out do each other. They seemed to realize that they were all equals. I know Robert Downey Jr may have seemed that way, but I think that is just Tony Starks personality.
Hopefully they keep that chemistry alive.
I remember seeing GoTG around comics back in the 90's, but never picked up any of their stories - just didn't appeal to me. I did read the Infinity Gauntlet saga, but it became way too cosmic after that.
Hank Pym to be played by Michael Douglas.
http://www.imdb.com/news/ni56657899/?ref_=hm_nw_tp_t1
Quote
After winning the Golden Globe Sunday for "Behind the Candelabra," Michael Douglas has found a high-profile new gig as scientist Hank Pym in Marvel's "Ant-man."
Edgar Wright is helming the pic from a script he wrote with Joe Cornish.
"With Hank Pym's rich history in the Marvel Universe, we knew we needed an actor capable of bringing the weight and stature to the role that the character deserves," said Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. "We felt incredibly relieved when Michael Douglas agreed to step into the part with the charm and fortitude he brings to every character he inhabits, and couldn't be more excited to see what he will do to bring Hank Pym to life."
Plot details are being kept under wraps. Feige is producing.
Marvel had pursued Douglas early on for the part, but the actor was cautious until sources said he had a change of heart over the holidays.
Huh. I don't recall Hank Pym being a geezer in the comics.
I thought that I had read that Hank wasn't even going to be in this film (just referred to as the inventor of the suit)- so this is good news.
I was holding out Bruce Willis as Pym. No wait, maybe Dolph Lundgren?

No, but it wouldn't hurt to bring back Lisa Rinna as the Contessa. Alongside Cobie, of course, not instead of...
I always thought that a solid SHIELD TV series that took spy work seriously, and based it's material on the old Steranko books, would've been fantastic.
Definitely not pleased about Douglas being Hank Pym. Douglas is too old. And I don't see him as Hank Pym at all. Kind of like Tom Hanks as the lead in the Dan Brown movie adaptaions of DaVinci Code and Angels & Demons. I always pictured Tom Cruise the professor.
This is kind of the same affront as casting Kelsey Grammar as The Beast in X-Men 3.
Oh, wait...that WAS X-Men 3. Nevermind, totally awful trainwreck of a movie.
Grammer as Beast was just ridiculous. I realize that making a movie is not a democratic process. And I also realize that sometimes the studio knocks it out of the park on casting decisions. However, could it hurt, even a little bit, if established literary characters, before they are cast, be put up for a vote? It doesn't mean the vote has to be taken into account or viewed as gospel, but I think it might give the studios some kind of idea what fans are expecting.

I agree X-Men 3 was less-than-stellar, but I actually kind of liked that they cast Grammar as The Beast.
Before you castrate me for saying that, my reasoning (if you can call it that) is that I watched a bit of the animated X-Men show that was on back in the 90's, and The Beast was one of the more interesting characters to me -- while he obviously could easily break heads when he needed to, I liked how he was still this brainy, cultured guy. As a fan of both Cheers and Frasier, I remember thinking that if they ever did a live-action film, Grammar would be an obvious choice for the role.
You can certainly argue that his actual performance as The Beast wound up falling flat, but I can easily see why they thought he would be a good fit.

I'm not the castrating kind, Martok. I might have a (vocal) opinion on something but that doesn't mean I'd disparage you for thinking otherwise.
I agree that his Frasier persona made sense insofar as Beast is concerned, but usually actors with any kind of passion for their business want characters that make them step outside of their comfort zones. Not that wearing a blue furry suit is out of Grammer's comfort zone (who knows, he might be into furry stuff), but being the 'egghead' fits way too closely to Frasier in my mind, so he's basically Blue Frasier.
Plus yeah, X-Men 3 was just awful. The first movie was decent, the second not as much, and the third tanked. First Class, I must say, was the best out of those four, and what they've done with Wolverine on the side is highly enjoyable. But killing off Jean Grey before she could really become Phoenix and exploring that storyline...sigh. The "What If" Marvel comic that depicted "What If Dark Phoenix Did Not Die" was one of my favorite comics ever, even if she did destroy the universe at the end of it. :)

Meanwhile, Baron Von Strucker has also most likely been cast: (http://comicsalliance.com/avengers-age-of-ultron-baron-von-strucker-thomas-kretschmann) Thomas Kretschmann, who plays Abraham van Helsing on the recent (and completely psychotic) NBC series Dracula.
I own the PS3 version of the Captain America movie tie-in game, where Strucker happens to be one of the villains along with a number of other classic Cap foes (not including Baron Zemo, oddly, but he's still there in a way because he was kicked out of his castle by other Hydra goons and the player can pick up statues telling the story of how that happened). That's a great game, and acts as a fine Cap movie all by itself -- it looks like we may never get another WW2 Cap movie from this team, so this game is essentially the-movie-we'll-never-get. The game design borrows heavily from the Arkham games, and that's a good thing.

Not sure how good a fit (or not) he is for the role, but I've always liked Bettany as an actor.
Least surprising Avengers news in a way, and yet I still didn't see it coming.
The Vision is so heavily made-up that the physicality won't matter much; and if (as seems extremely likely) they're going with the original version of Ultron as a robot without any overt connection to Henry Pym, who temporarily takes over Jarvis making Jarvis seem like a villain, this would mesh up very well with the Vision originally being an agent of Ultron. (It also backwards meshes well with Jarvis taking over Iron Man duties pretty much directly at the end of IM3.)
This also explains why they were so hot to get the Scarlet Witch introduced rather than one of the other women: she ended up marrying the Vision. Her powers might even be a key to breaking Jarvis free from Ultron's control.
The first Guardians of the Galaxy trailer:

More potential/likely Phase 2 speculations:
We know Hugo Weaving isn't interested in coming back as the Red Skull. We also know his daughter in the comics takes over the role of Red Skull during the Winter Soldier plot, and is connected to Von Strucker, who is confirmed as an introductory Av2 villain. We also know that the Marvel Short guys have tossed around making a one-shot film about "Sin" (her nickname), and their short films always connect with larger films somewhere.
I'd say it's pretty likely we're going to see "Sin" show up in Winter Soldier to take over being the Red Skull, possibly in competition with Strucker who in comics continuity has turned out to be the guy behind several supervillain organizations not just keeping Hydra going -- including AIM (which in the comics is a rebel offshoot of Hyrda, but which so far doesn't have that connection in the movies).
Other recent news: the release of the Thor 2 Blu-Ray's short film about the Mandarin confirms that the "real" Mandarin hasn't been killed off yet (despite the guy from IM3's Extremis plot overtly declaring himself to be the Mandarin), and that he's someone different from Ben Kingsley's character but who was impressed and wants that guy to keep playing the role while he manipulates in secret.
This could end up tying into the ongoing SHIELD tv show, which is teasing a secret character who supposedly can see the future and is running the CENTIPEDE group behind the scenes. At any rate I'm glad the writers found a way to retcon Kingsley's portrayal of the Mandarin into in-universe canon while still keeping him as his own character AND teasing a more comic-proper character. I doubt we'll see this play out until Phase 3 or later, but I'll be checking to see if the tv show has hints leading in this direction. (We've really only seen half that season so far.)
First off, let me begin this post by warning of Captain America: Winter Soldier spoilers. I will change the font colour on spoiler info in an attempt to hide it.
I liked the way that Agents of Shield tied in with the events of Winter Soldier. The Marvel Studios path forward continues to evolve. An earlier prediction that Avengers 2 will begin with a battle with Baron Von Strucker, and now that Hydra has been unveiled, that could be likely.
The first of the two "One Shots" at the end of Winter Soldier showed the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver as being in Hydra's (or a Hydra ally's) clutches. We know that Avengers 2 deals with Ultron. Ultron makes the android "Vision" (to be played by Paul Bettany, the voice of JARVIS) who, in the comics, marries the Scarlet Witch. No doubt as part of the set up for Avengers 2.
Apparently they are also going to reboot the Fantastic Four. There is a comics story-line called the Ultimate Fantastic Four, where the story is a bit different and one of the villains they battle is Thanos. Yes Thanos, the mysterious villain who is trying to assemble the Infinity Gauntlet. Perhaps another tie-in?

Awesome avatar, eyebiter! I think Black Panther is due before Black Widow. Although, I would much rather see ScarJo in skintight black leather than some dude.
Her character has had a lot of exposure in three movies where her character wasn't intrinsically integral (though the comic canon connections were admittedly legitimate), and one movie (Avengers) where frankly a different female character would have served better. I'm not excited for a solo movie. I'd rather see Captain Marvel or Spider-woman or She-hulk or Tigra or Wasp or almost literally any other female Avenger in a solo movie.
Black Panther (despite the ridiculously outdated and area-inappropriate name) would be a vastly much better pick for a Phase 3 solo.
Captain Marvel, yes! I'm hoping that she shows up in the next Guardians movie, at least.
Marvel has pretty much confirmed CapMarv will be part of Phase 3, but seems to have settled on someone other than Katee Sackhoff for the role, unfortunately. >:( Well, they've earned enough money being good at what they do that I can't gripe about them hating money and success -- likely whoever they've picked instead will work, too. And Katee might seem a touch too old to them, or possibly not tall enough as Danvers is a little statuesque.
Which didn't stop her from mercilessly teasing her fans recently on the subject, of course. ::)
Dude...I can't STAND Katie Sackhoff.
I did like her in BG...but she's a terrible, terrible actress in everything else she tries to do. She ruined Longmire for me because she's Starbuck in just about everything she does. It's like she has no idea how to act other than like that character.
Katee Sackhoff would be the wrong shade to play Captain Marvel. The right one for Ms. Marvel, but not the Capt.
Are there any Marvel characters they are not planning to include in the movies? What are we up to now, about 30+?
Quote from: Sir Slash on August 29, 2014, 10:17:53 PMAre there any Marvel characters they are not planning to include in the movies?

They've managed to completely reinvent The Avengers without Hank Pym / Janet Van Dyne and even build the second movie around his creation to impress her without bothering to feature either one of them in the movie.

You've got that reversed. Kamala Khan picked up the Ms. Marvel name; Carol Danvers is still the Captain.
Though considering how cutely the writers are playing the Ultron origin (going waaaaaay back to him being linked to Jarvis the butler), and the "Age of Ultron" title, Evangeline Lily (playing the daughter of Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne) may end up as CapMarv: Janet took the role (in an alternate reality) after Pym died in the original crossover event.
Hmm. Mayhaps they will reboot Rogue as well. She was easily my favorite X-man. Didn't like how they portrayed her in the original X-Men movies, unlike the comic where she sucked up Ms. Marvel's powers (I'm remembering that right, right?)

From the Wiki:
Monica Rambeau[edit]
Main article: Monica Rambeau
The second Captain Marvel is Monica Rambeau, a police lieutenant from New Orleans who possesses the power to transform herself into any form of energy.[8] Her powers were briefly altered so that she cannot transform to energy, but instead can generate a personal force field.[9] Sometime later, the Stranger returned her energy transformation abilities. She is a member of the Avengers, and at one point served as their leader. She eventually ceded the Captain Marvel name to the original Captain Marvel's son after which Rambeau used the name Photon for quite some time,[10] until Genis-Vell adopted the same name. Genis-Vell and Monica discussed this and Monica decided on the name Pulsar.[11]
Rambeau later joined H.A.T.E. (the Highest Anti-Terrorism Effort) in the new series titled NEXTWAVE.[12] In this series created by Warren Ellis and Stuart Immonen, H.A.T.E. (a subsidiary of the Beyond Corporation©) forms a team to fight the Bizarre Weapons of Mass Destruction. Members include Monica Rambeau, a man known only as "The Captain", Boom Boom, Aaron Stack, and Elsa Bloodstone. She most recently returned to the Avengers using the codename Spectrum
And the seventh Captain Marvel, from the Wiki:
Carol Danvers[edit]
Main article: Carol Danvers
In July 2012, Carol Danvers, the longtime super-heroine known as
Ms. Marvel, assumed the mantle of Captain Marvel in a new ongoing series by writer Kelly Sue DeConnick and artist Dexter Soy. Danvers, who first appeared as a supporting character in the original Captain Marvel's title and gained her superpowers from him, now sports a revamped costume to complement the codename. DeConnick stated at the 2012 WonderCon that the series will reflect on what the legend of Captain Marvel means to Danvers, what she will do with it and what the rest of the Marvel Universe thinks of her new role.[15]
The only thing the Wiki doesn't state for Monica Rambeau is her skin color. Which is black. Hence, Katee Sackhoff is the wrong color to play Captain Marvel.
Yep, Rambeau was in the Avengers back around the 230s or so, for almost 60 issues. She was an interesting character that never really got explored until they moved her out of the Avengers and started doing other things with her.

Blonde and white. Monica Rambeau is Pulsar now, and has been for ages (and was Photon for a while before that, having ceded the CapMarv title back to Mar-Vell's son). Danvers has been CapMarv since 2012. (Also in the animated Avengers 2nd season that same year.)
When the series writers and creators in the comic named CAPTAIN MARVEL call Danvers CAPTAIN MARVEL consistently for the past few years, she's currently CapMarv.

That being said, there's no intrinsic reason other than recognition value why Carol Danvers couldn't be black or several other skin colors; or for that matter no intrinsic reason other than current recognition value why she couldn't be Monica Rambeau. Or Kamala Khan for that matter -- that would be pretty ballsy, and a quite different powerset than the somewhat Thorsy Danvers (or anyone else likely to be on the team for a while).

Notice they're not tying in X-Men or Fantastic Four franchises. Which makes no sense if you're going for the Inhumans, since they overlapped with both at various times.

I'm mixed about Whedon - I hope he can get out of his Marvel deal and possibly redo Firefly. Then again he does have a flair for good Marvel movies.
Source? Because I can't confirm this with any of my geek-news outlets.
source of whedon, or the graphic? licensing deals?
I don't know of any sources, but I could swear he hinted at this a while ago, around the time of the Avengers movie. Either he hinted at it or, more likely, the Browncoats are creating something out of nothing.
Source of the graphic. Or source of the properties and dates in the graphic.
I know "War of Kings" is correct (that's the latest info I've seen confirmed), as is Ant Man and Dr. Strange; haven't heard the subtitles for Cap3 or Thor3, but the dates seem correct. The Cap2/3 directors said the subtitle would be released very, very soon, but also indicated it would be rather more epic than "The Fallen Son". I'm suspicious of "Civil War" out of the gate -- admittedly all indications are that a new Avengers team is set up at the end of Av2, but that wouldn't in itself lead to the Civil War plotline or even the MCU equivalent this early, and they're steadily building to a showdown with Thanos so it would be weird for them to delay that. I would believe Planet Hulk, but I'm sure THAT hasn't been confirmed yet, and no way would I believe they're going straight to WWH without having done a PHulk story yet, regardless of how Av2 ends.

That verse on Nick Fury's tombstone?
pulp fiction?
Sweet!
They even preserved the fact that in Pulp Fiction Jules was making up his quote as he went along. "The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you."
The one part (in bold) he does accurately quote is in fact pretty close to Ez 25:17, but it isn't the path of the righteous man:
"I will execute great vengeance against them with furious rebukes. They will know that I am Yahweh when I take My vengeance on them."
Which is also what Fury is about to go do. :knuppel2: O:-)
In a backhanded sort of way, it's a typical rabbinic rebuke: quote a verse that sounds like it means one thing, hiding the real punchline in the unspoken context. Combine with some midrash (commentary on the verse, possibly by referencing ideas from other verses) and there you go. >:D

That was my initial thought as well. However, the second Cap movie strongly indicates The First Avenger is beginning to adopt the "anti-government/pro-freedom equals patriotic" line of thought.
That's the way it was in the Civil War storyline...Iron Man led the pro-government superheroes, while Cap led the other side.
Huh. I had seen some news yesterday indicating Marvel was going to go back to the Civil War well next year, but I wasn't expecting this. Probably should have though.
Notably, this ends with the death of Cap, and Bucky taking over the shield for a while. It doesn't stick (of course), but I bet in the Cinematic Universe it will. Though the main problem with people other than Cap taking over, is that even if they have the physical capabilities they tend to lack the moral purity (as even they'd admit).
I... can't say I'm overly fond of this, even though it kiiiinnnnd of makes sense the way the C-U is developing.
Incidentally, this may also explain the prevalence of a production promotional shot that has been making the rounds for a while, of Rogers and Stark standing around near each other suited up, from Avengers 2.
Chris Evans has been quite vocal about not playing Cap beyond his six movie deal which will likely end with Avengers 3. Marvel is already setting up Sebastian Stan (Bucky) to take over the part. Stan is under contract for 9 movies.

I just assumed another 6 superheroes or so would show up (as hinted) at the end of Av2. ;)
Though since Cap2 spoiled that Shield already knew about several of them, including Dr. Strange, the internet leak point still holds I guess.
This brings up an interesting point for the current Agents of Shield show, however, since this really ought to mean a bunch of common people already know about Graviton, the Absorbing Man, and other potential/actual supervillains on that show. For that matter, the minor Cap villain (from the comics, the brainwashing guy) who was promoted to lead main badguy this season, ought to have had his cover entirely blown and be unable to operate as a pretend-English businessman anymore. Also his 2nd-in-command for that matter.

Well, the first official Av2 trailer just went live.
Raymond Reddington finally gets tired of those Blacklisters constantly endangering Lizzy (this time apparently dressing her in a red costume for 'playtime') and armors up. "I'm going to show you something beautiful. People screaming for mercy," he growls. But the process drives him crazy and he starts singing a theme song from a very old Disney cartoon. Most of the Avengers are perplexed by this (while Reddington's ex-wife -- WHO NO DOUBT PURELY BY COINCIDENCE strongly resembles Lizzy -- screams in some debris, possibly in ironic counterpoint to Reddington's typically colorful threat), but Iron Man is too busy fighting the Hulk to notice until it's too late.
"There are no strings on me," Reddington growls as he activates the House Party Protocol.

In the comics, Ultron is an old, old enemy of the Avengers.
And also, per his original introduction filtered through Marvel Cinematic continuity, the Tony Stark AI from the Iron Man films gone rogue.
Originally, Ultron wasn't built by Henry Pym, but by Jarvis the Butler, who had turned supervillain when no one was looking. This was quickly retconned by the end of the original story arc, as Jarvis having been victimized by Ultron -- which may still be the case here after all, since they're combining Jarvis with the Vision origin story. But that left over an unexplained Ultron origin, and so the standard continuity explanation was born. Which we may get indications of in the subsequent Ant-Man film.
Meanwhile, consider James Spader's voice coming from the Ultron version "Jocasta" which Ultron built in order to have sex with Pym and seduce him away from Janet. ......AAAAHHH!! AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!

I think so, but in Iron Man canon (comics, anyway), that means squat. Just a way to wash hands of history and reboot Iron Man with cool new armor.
The character's obviously been tinkering given the appearance of the Hulkbuster armor (wonder if they'll call it that in the movie).

You have it right.
My guess is that A2 has Stark creating Ultron and an army of robots based on the Iron Man tech. Ultron goes bonkers and that's what forces Stark back into the armor.

Yep. Got Thor's attention.
Chadwick Boseman is Black Banther, and has signed a five-picture deal with Marvel.

That trailer was on the Agents of Shield TV show last pm. I thought I saw the hammer-wiggle scene wrong until you all saw the same thing. Nice touch. Can't wait.
Oh I get it now. They had to do the second trailer because the first one leaked before they could use it as a SHIELD promo. Explains why it's basically the party scene tacked on to the beginning of the first trailer.

Good I wasn't the only one to see that either.
A little of the Marvel humor with the look on Thor's face.
Maybe he thought he had another brother. By another mother. Odin did get around you know. ;D
Cap probably faked it to be nice.
Canonically, he's one of the people who can wield the hammer. Wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't pick it up toward the end of Av2 to help out a bit and then throw it over to Thor.
A detail of the trailer I've only seen one person mention so far is Andy Serkis (of all people) dressed and bearded to look like (the originally human version of) Klaw. It's a good thing Black Panther has now been cast (for a five picture deal no less) because a ton of details are pointing to Wakanda on the way.
That list of the Marvel slate upthread (not the graphic, though it isn't far off) is genuine, by the way. Feige announced it earlier this week.
Notably, still no Hulk movie, but Feige may have slipped a bit when he said the Hulk was an important part of their movies especially the Avengers. That would seem to imply they're considering having him guest star elsewhere; and we've wondered for a while if Guardians 2 would involve a Planet Hulk variant allowing them to connect back to the Infinity War plot. (James Gunn, the director, has officially shot that rumor down, but he was also laying curious connections to an eventual Hulk plot in Guardians 1, most notably one of the Hulk's lovers... crap, the bird woman whose name I forget, she makes movies and was wearing Starlord's shirt early in the film and may have originally been meant to be a spy or agent -- there are production photos showing Gunn on set directing her in combat gear.)
Feige also (in an interview for iFilm) may have spoiled a bit of Av2 plot by saying that while Stark is funding Shield, Cap is running it. That wouldn't be official (Feige also says there's no more Shield, but that's not really true, they're just more superspyish about what they're doing), but it would make a logical setup for a Civil-Warish sort of storyline as Shield redeems themselves and reintegrates into the government.
Oddly, the press releases and interviews have not yet confirmed that CumberBen has signed for Doctor Strange; there may be legal issues still being worked out.

Never was a big fan of Black Panther, but that suit is impressive and I've yet to see a really bad Marvel movie in the last few years. Hopefully they don't fiddle with the outfit between now and primary filming.
Well, when the Inhumans comic series relaunched recently, their typical title font now has the little alien circuitry symbols we've been seeing in Agents of Shield -- so that at least confirms Kree influence there, and pretty much everyone expects Inhuman connections now, too, since Marvel can't use "mutant" concepts (or mostly characters) per se.
This would be a slick way to get around having the Maximov twins in Av2, too: they aren't mutants in the MCU, they're Inhumans now. The "EarthX" miniseries, which in its backstory is still largely regarded as canon, posits direct connections between Marvel mutants and the Inhumans and every other super-powered type back through Celestial manipulation (with aliens like the Kree making further experiments due to the various latent factors): and GotG explicitly introduced the Celestials in a couple of ways.

You knew that was coming.
As soon as they left Henry & Janet out of the first movie, you knew it was coming. The Wasp might've been the longest-running / most prominent Marvel character to not get her own book. And yet, there's 2-1/2 decades of her all over The Avengers.
Avengers lore is almost on par with Tolkien for me and the travesty that Marvel/Disney is foisting upon us is good/bad just like LotR movies. Glad they made them/don't understand why they couldn't be made the way they were originally written.
Apparently Wasp was in an early draft for the first Avengers:

However the upcoming Ant-Man movie is going to establish Janet as long dead:

Hmm, I didn't even guess the Chitauri involvement, although I guess I should have. They even look physically similar.
But the origin is even more different than what I thought they were going for, i.e. the 'original' Jarvis-goes-evil-and-builds-Ultron-as-his-minion plot which was soon retconned to Ultron having brainwashed Jarvis (and then needing a new origin so he became Pym's creation but blacked out his memory of it for a while.)
Incidentally, I notice that Howard Stark's butler "Alfred Jarvis" (yes, Alfred) will be in the upcoming Agent Carter series. Played by Bellame, of course. Wouldn't be surprised if they don't tie this into the Vision more closely, since in some continuities the Vision was a remade WW2 Human Torch robot -- and not only have the promos been teasing some secret Starkian weapon, but the Torch was already shown at the Stark Expo in Cap1 (as Steve and Bucky are heading over to check out Stark's attempt at a flying car).

That would be excellent.
Word seems to be leaking that Sony has, in effect, done what the hacked Sony emails leaked: shut down the "Amazing" film series in order to reboot through Marvel Studios, with Spider-man debuting in Av3 aka Infinity War Part 1. But not in Cap 3 Civil War (the original proposition) unless in a post-credit cameo since those are often filmed very late in production.
This would tacitly suggest the Civil War plotline won't be wrapped up in Cap3 but will spill into Av3 and 4.
Previous Sony emails indicated a plan to spin Spidey out of the MCU into a new MCU-connected continuity of movies (independent of Raimi and Webb), probably thus not including Andrew Garfield as Parker. (A highly amusing bogus rumor was going around a while back, btw, suggesting Sony wanted a movie with Toby McGuire playing a Spider-villain. Carnage would seem the most fitting option there! -- but Badass Digest debunks the rumor, sorry.)
Deven at Badass thinks it doesn't matter if the arrangement (reported by Latino Review, whose sources have proven extremely good in the past) has been made: Avi Arad remains attached to the Spiderman property, and Kevin Feige who oversees the MCU production will surely balk at working with Arad again. Nor do they need Spidey in the MCU (fan wishing notwithstanding); arguably the MCU may be better with the highest-profile properties (and Man-thing ;) ) already locked out. Nor can Marvel execs force the union. Only Disney, who owns Marvel, could do that.
So, even if the arrangement has been made, big legal and personal bumps remain to be hurdled.
http://www.latino-review.com/news/marvelous-da7e-78-the-fates-of-cap-thor-and-spidey
(Oh, be warned, huge possible spoilers for upcoming Phase 3 movies at the LR article. Not that they're very huge for anyone who knows the main beats of the CW storyline, or who remembers where things are in Asgard at the end of Thor 2.)
Keep in mind that the Sinister Six movie hasn't officially been scrapped yet (but probably will be in any case, I expect), and that Amazing 3 is still due for a 2016 release next year. That does not seem likely to hold if the plan is to do a new Spidey in Av3 (or at the post-credit of Civil War, which might or might not make plot sense -- Spidey is a colorful character and would be pretty obvious operating in New York). BUT it isn't impossible that Sony, in order to milk the cash cow, craps out a planned 2016 Amazing 3 to finish up a trilogy set before rebooting (again) via the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
I feel like I should add here, in regard to "craps out", that I'm not one of those people who think Amazing 1 and 2 are crimes against humanity. On the contrary, as aggressively stupid as Am2 so often is, and as wonky as the villain designs are, it looks damn great (for somewhat variable values of "damn great" -- no one anywhere at any time could have seriously thought the Goblin looked great) and the actors are selling hard -- even when they're selling some problematic-to-terrible characterizations. I could probably fan-edit it down to an hour and trim out most of the asinine plot material and be satisfied. And I'm pleasantly surprised that Am1 has held up and improved on repeated viewings. Maybe Am2 will, too; seems doubtful, but I thought the same about Am1 at first. (Also, I'm quite a fan of the video-game sequel to Am1.) When I say "craps out" I mean I mean at this stage Am3 would have to be rushed to make even a Christmas 2016 release, and on a film of this sort that isn't going to help the quality.
I can't wait for The Vulture's movie.
^^ Latest news: Vulture movie still happening! (http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2015/02/10/disney-delays-4-marvel-films-to-make-room-for-spider-man-in-2017/)
(Oh, and also, Spider-man confirmed to be rebooted again as a new series for MCU (http://marvel.com/news/movies/24062/sony_pictures_entertainment_brings_marvel_studios_into_the_amazing_world_of_spider-man) somewhere eventually.)
Finally, Spidey in the MCU!
Note that the current plan means:
1.) Spidey debuts in an MCU film before his solo film.
2.) The solo film is already scheduled for summer 2017 (two summers away).
3.) No way the Sinister Six film (Vulture & Co.) will premier before the Spidey solo film.
4.) Which by the way means the talented Drew Goddard left the production of the Daredevil miniseries for nothing.
5.) Also no way the SSix film won't be set in the MCU now, even though strictly speaking Sony and not Marvel will still be making it (though that may change eventually, too.)
6.) Which also means Sony may receive (or buy) permission to use previous MCU assets in its Spiderverse movies now, since there will be some degree of overlap.
7.) The timing and schedule means, by deduction, that Spidey can only appear first in Guardians 2 (but impossible for plot reasons, since the director confirms they'll stay cosmic 'in-space' away from Earth, and it would be silly to throw him away in a goofy cameo like Howard the Duck); Cap3 (which would make plot sense in connection with its sort-of "Civil War" storyline, but I previously read that that movie's script has already been locked down so far that even a post-credit cameo may be impossible now despite those traditionally being shot after main production); and Doctor Strange.
Strange holds a curious juncture between main-level, cosmic-level, and street-level Marvel heroes, including a close friendship with Spiderman, so an important cameo in his movie wouldn't be utterly implausible. Could also be worth noting that Marvel's Netflix miniseries are intentionally planned to be subunits of an overall "Defenders" season (with the whole season made up of the pieces plus a final team-up): usually the Defenders aren't so street-level as they'll (initially?) be in the MCU, and traditionally Doctor Strange is who calls together the various rosters of the non-team.
With Marvel planning to phase out RDJ and his Tony Stark character, and also planning to replace him in central importance with Cumberbatch as Steven Strange, I wouldn't be at all surprised if they lean hard on tying his character into as much of the MCU as possible as quickly as possible, by the Defenders/Spidey route.
Ugh! Enough of Spidey already! Five flicks is plenty.
Incidentally, I think it's hilarious intercompany politics that Marvel's own press release phrases it as "Sony is bringing Marvel into the amazing world of Spider-Man."

I'm okay if they do something worthwhile with him (the reboot talk makes me cringe but I've heard the plan is just to have the movies running as though an origin story already happened, because that worked so well with the Hulk in
Avengers and kind of well with the Hulk in
Incredible.)
Mostly I don't want them calling off the development of other properties to work on his films. But I enjoy Spidey, even when he's done painfully, so I'm on board in theory with the MCU showrunners.
I'm fine if Spidey is in a Marvel flick (along with other heroes... and I actually like the Dr. Strange possibilities), I just can't stomach the thought of yet another Spiderman franchise. Two is enough.
The CW is that he will appear first in Cap 3.
I agree with 40. I don't need anymore standalone Spiderman films at this point, but he would be a welcome addition to the other MCU franchises.
I actually get a kick out of the new Spider-Man cartoon, "Ultimate Spider-Man". Spidey's on a SHIELD team with Nova, Iron Fist, Power Man, and White Tiger.

I saw that. I still think it's crap. I get why filmmakers do it with books. I just don't have to like it.
I don't mind it so much. There's no real continuity in comic books anyway. Some purple asteroid crosses Earth's orbit and suddenly there's a whole new timeline with the Argyle Avenger ruler of the planet. :idiot2:

There's no real continuity in comic books anyway.
I get that, too. But some of the fun of comics for me is reading fifty or sixty or a hundred issues in a row and the internal consistency you get from that. Everything that is happening in the now harkens back to what happened then. And while you can retcon history, it's usually to bring back a major villain or nemesis. And sure, there's enough examples I am sure you can cite that say, 'It was this way and now it's that because a meteor crashed/the Beyonder/different Earth/timeline/etc.,' but it seems that happens a lot less in long running books LIKE the Avengers. And if it does happen in X-Men or FF, there's usually a concerted effort to 'get back to our own time.' So the adventure becomes canon, but not, 'reality (from the characters viewpoint, of course).' It just seems lazy and very 'Hollywood,' to just take a property and do whatever you'd like to it regardless of what is already there. And THAT'S what pisses me off! ;) [/rantoff]

Chris Hemsworth and Comics Alliance drop some big hints about the upcoming Av2 not being ultimately about what it seems to be: Ultron isn't the main villain after all!
http://comicsalliance.com/avengers-2-set-chris-hemsworth-interview/
When interviewer Mike Sampson visited the set, Thor was busy fighting someone at his own strength level, someone he hadn't fought (or necessarily even met) before. A fight which seems to connect to Thor having figured out over the movie that a threat from Asgard (or beyond Asgard but connected to it) is what's happening here.
While that seems like Loki might be involved (currently ruling Asgard in sequence having disposed of Odin somehow), the impression being given is that Loki isn't the threat. Whoever he's fighting in this scene is someone Mike wasn't expecting at all (and can't talk about yet), though of course that could still be a minion.
Lots more hints at the article.

How are Quicksilver / Scarlet Witch available for Avengers flicks when they're Magneto's kids, and he's tied to the X-Men franchise that's licensed to another studio.
Is is b/c they were Avengers for all those early years w/ Cap & Hawkeye?
What gives?
Update: the interview with Joss Whedon at apparently the same shoot (part of the same series) suggests the fight is with the Vision, though they don't say that explicitly.
More trivially, Joss wanted Paul Bettany (the voice of the Jarvis AI) to play the Vision long before getting involved in the MCU movies. One of his conditions for directing the first movie was that if they asked him back, the villain had to be Ultron creating the Vision.
Scarlet Witch won't just be doing telekenisis (telekenises? crap I fell like such an ungeek...) as in the stinger for Cap 2; she'll be showing alternate universes to the main characters, for example, which kind of fits her canonical power set (of actualizing alternate universes where improbable things happen).
The legal answer, is that Marvel negotiated the rights to be shared, because Scarlet Witch is such a key Avenger (and if her, then also her brother Quicksilver as a package).
Even in comics canon I'm not sure they're still the children of Magneto; the connection with Von Strucker in the film didn't come out of nowhere, it has its roots in some part of the canon at one point.
Whether they're Inhumans or not in the MCU seems more up in the air.

I have heard that they are not Magneto's kids in the Disney movies.
They are certainly not in the Disney movies. (Though some leeway may be left in, in case Fox ever decides to let go of their X-men properahahahahahaaa sorry couldn't finish that sentence. ;) )

I 1000% expect them to do the same with Captain America in Cap3 (since after all the comics did): Cap "dies", someone takes over for a while, Cap's back in time for Infinity War Part 2.

QuoteYou're thinking Edge of Tomorrow. Starship Troopers was a Crosby/Hope film that was originally going to be released as Road to Klendathu.
Comics Alliance and Screen Crush have been teaming up for a while to do trivia episodes on various comics which have movie or TV properties.
This week, Ultron trivia with several interesting/potential connections to the MCU (including Ultron bringing together Star Lord and Rocket Raccoon for the first time in the comics):
I think I heard this was coming a few months ago, but it's... interesting... that (one of?) the new Inhuman series, releasing this week, is called "The Uncanny Inhumans".
The MCU is leaning hard on the IHus replacing mutants in its milieu, but that's pushing the replacement concept awfully hard.
(Though insofar as the Earth X / Universe X miniseries is an alternate future version of main canon, mutants actually do share the same origin as the Inhumans and all other Earth 'marvels': Celestial genetic manipulation to protect the cradle of a gestating baby Celestial from threats like Galactus. This potential was what the Kree, or a renegade faction of them, were experimenting with to create weapons via terragenesis, resulting in the Inhumans.)

He makes a very valid point. When death becomes cheap like that, it really loses its emotional impact.
Was watching Capt. America 2 again the other night and the Hydra bad guy was mentioning all of Hydra's enemies and included Steven Strange in the list. So, there was a hint for Avengers 2 right there. I missed it first time around.
I somewhat doubt he'll be in Av2 (unless he's gathering new Avengers in the post-credit); but he's certainly on the way for Phase 3 and Av3.1.
To the great surprise of absolutely no one who was speculating about whatever obscure neckbearded Marvel character Andy Serkis might be playing in a story involving Ultron and thus also vibranium (a key component in adamantium, which was introduced in an Ultron story many years before Wolverine snikt along with it)...
{inhale}
...he's playing Ulysses Klaw, the best-known villain for the Black Panther. Pretty much confirming that Wakanda and vibranium (and thus probably adamantium, at least as a threat/goal for Ultron) will be in the movie, if not T'Challa (or his dad T'Chaka) himself. Serkis confirmed it himself a night or two ago, saying it's a minimal role in the film.
Klaw eventually becomes an insane sound-based creature, capable of fighting the Avengers single-handed; and Serkis definitely helped the motion-capture work on the film, perhaps directing it, too (he's been directing mo-cap for feature films as a 2nd unit director for a while -- also some video games.)

So I DVR'ed
Days of Future Past to watch last weekend, and Quicksilver is totally in that one, though they don't specifically name him as such. There's only so many super-fast white-haired guys named "Maximoff" out there.
How are they getting around the licensing / rights of having him in the X-Men continuity and the Avengers continuity?

Wasn't a lady. It was a young, skinny En Sabah Nur.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apocalypse_(comics)
Oh. More new Marvel Supervillians. Need a scorecard to keep up.
Not new, Apoc's been around (in comics) since the 80s. Age of Apocalypse is one of the big Xmen stories; actually an alternate version of (or maybe directly connected to) Days of Future Past.
Re Damage Control: the MCU version is one of the villains in the new Daredevil show (though it may be replaced someday with the 'real' Damage Control).
I guess the 80's is where I fell off the comics boat. The 60's & 70's is what I know best. And I know that a lot of the comic characters actually had their origins from that time, they changed a lot of their story lines.
Comics are like day time soaps, given enough time, and the stories will be repeated, with slight changes, and or previous stories will be conveniently, eh, reimaged.
First Av2 reviews are coming in. No surprise the reviews are great. O0
ScreenCrush / ComicsAlliance (http://comicsalliance.com/avengers-age-of-ultron-review/), for example. (No spoilers for anyone who has been following the trailers recently.)
In other MCU news, the first Spider-man film in MCU continuity will be animated (the sooner to get him into play after the cameo coming in Civil War).

"Avengers 2 is the Iron Man 2 of the Marvel Movies" -- Luke Thompson for Topless Robot (http://www.toplessrobot.com/2015/04/tr_review_avengers_age_of_ultron_is_the_iron_man_2.php)
He immediately clarifies he like IM2. (For what it's worth, so do I. I only hate the music, which is worse than terrible after the great score from IM1.) But he definitely chose that title to be a negative criticism. "I can't believe I'm saying this, but Agents of SHIELD's more insanely convoluted storylines and need to rely on story over effects have perhaps jaded me to simplistic smashy-smashy tales set in the same universe, though I think it's more than a structural thing."
Also, Joss Whedon says there is no post-credit scene this time (so don't worry about that); and that the movie will release as an extended edition with an alternate ending on Blu (which might possibly address some of the structural and characterization problems LYT was complaining about.)
I'll reserve judgement until I see it, but it sounds like JW has done well to juggle all the demands of a sequel to one of the biggest blockbusters of all time and managed to create a movie that is still well above average for the genre.

I can understand why he wants to step back from directing Infinity Wars. These things are massive undertakings and his instincts are to craft thoughtful, character driven stories.

heh. I thought it was pretty good too.
TPek, well, I haven't seen anyone talk about the post-credit scene even vaguely, so maybe Whedon didn't care whether people believed him or not when he said there wasn't one? I'm just reporting what he said in an article from a while back.
Mirth and B_C, my favorite parts were the guy on lag. :2funny:
Mirth (again): I suppose "isn't half bad" could count as "above average for the genre", come to think of it. ;)
Incidentally, Whedon also said the mysterious black bald woman undressing at a black pool underground, whom everyone thought would be one of the Panther's elite bodyguard (and potential queen, as all of them are), was only part of a hallucination that didn't survive into the final cut. :o
OK. Here's my take. A great film nearly the equal of the first Avengers. Typical Joss Whedon flick with lots of action, humor, great effects, a little sad in places with the high point being the Ironman vs Hulk scrap. Better than Guardians of the Galaxy and all the Ironmans. There is a post credit scene but only after the initial credits go by. I didn't stay all the way to the ending credits so cannot speak for a second scene. If there's a threat to these films it will be too many characters on screen. The first movie had 6 Avengers and the bad guy. This one has the original 6, plus 3 new Avengers and the bad guy. Plus a whole slew of camiyos from other films thrown in. But there's more tension between characters and at times your not real sure who's right and who's wrong. If you've seen the trailers like me, then you know Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are in the movie but there's another surprise hero who show's up totally unexpectedly. And for a teaser, the new hero can actually wield Thor's hammer. :o And one character dies but you won't hear who from me. Well worth the price of admission and worthy of the mountain of money it will make. My 2 cents.
That only makes me even MORE excited to go see it!!!!

You can just check IMDB to see the new heroes and easily guess.
Sorry about the missed spelled "Cameo" in my earlier post. I forgot to Spell Check myself. Yeah, you can probably figure-out the additional hero but it was a surprise to me, just about everybody else in the Marvel movies had already appeared. Still it's been a long time since I was at a movie and people actually cheered when a superhero showed up and smacked the pooh out of the bad guy. My Marvel-Newbie Son-in-Law loved it. He's hooked. Favorite line: Tony Stark's working on a broken tractor and Nick Fury says to him, "TRY not to make this one come to life".

I went and saw Age of Ultron tonight. My take is almost identical to Sir Slash's.
Overall, I enjoyed it as much as the first Avengers film. It's one of those rare sequels that's equal to (or better than) the original. Definitely recommended!
Just watched it with my kiddos. Epic. Better than I was planning on based on some of the reviews. On par with the first. I hesitate to say the second was better only because the first was so damned good too.
Everything you could want in a comic book movie.
For me, this was like Iron Man 2 compared to Iron Man. I was totally expecting the hero who was a surprise to Sir S, as this is the Age of Ultron, after all.
I enjoyed it, just not as much as I enjoyed the first one.
As noted above, I personally enjoyed IM2 (aside from the wretched musical score). So the comparisons to IM2, which are rather generalized anyway, don't and didn't bother me.
Saw it this afternoon with Dad. Was surprised at who died toward the end; but then I thought about certain legalities and realized in a way it made good sense. (Don't want to spoil things. Lol at the "elevator" joke upthread for who could wield the hammer btw!)
The only... um... I'm not going to say "stumble", because it wasn't a stumble exactly, but the only problem I personally had with the movie was that Ultron was written and played far far faaarrrrr too human. The sound mix for his voice in post was more than a little weird, as sometimes he had a mechanical reverb and other times he sounded perfectly human. In fact James Spader routinely played him with Red Reddington mannerisms, and that would have been distracting anyway, but in comparison with Ultron's established characteristics in other media it was worse.
I enjoyed his performance, don't misunderstand me -- I just kept being thrown off and distracted by it. (His constant Biblical references were even more out of character and distracting.)
I'll be curious to see the extended cut on Blu. I feel like there were some plotlines that got dropped or trimmed out along the way -- though the only one I recall was Thor trying to figure out the importance of what's going on, and hieing off to go do something with Dr. Selkirk, and then... just kinda coming back for the fight, and nothing more is said about that, though Dr. S joins the new Avengers base. (And why does there have to be a new Avengers base anyway? Stark's tower is just fine. Isn't it? Did I forget something?)
Considering the pressure Joss Whedon was reportedly under to write and direct the thing, I was even more impressed than I was expecting.
The mid-credit sequence (after the end-title credits), can be skipped, it doesn't really mean anything, just a cute fifteen second tease for the next Avengers film(s). ("Well then. I guess I'll just have to do it myself." Which I suppose counts as obliquely clearing up the vague mystery hinted at in the film about how Ultron even got going in the first place.)
Quote from: JasonPratt on May 02, 2015, 05:07:22 PM

Stark is basically out at the end. That's the whole final scene with him and Cap - Tony talking about retiring to the sticks with Pepper, like Barton did with his family. Did you notice how the base was labeled "new avengers facility". We're basically looking at the New Avengers. Stark's exit from the team sets up the showdown between him and Cap in Cap3.
The film covered a lot of ground, with mixed results. I wish they hadn't tried to cram in so much that sets up the next round of movies. The Ultron story almost seemed secondary. I'm nitpicking though, it rocked. Far more satisfying than most other recent blockbusters.
LALALALALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU
We're going to go see it tomorrow morning. I mean, me and my kids. Not my wife, ha. :crazy2:
I also felt they had cut out or cut short some of the plot lines in the film. Maybe a funeral scene for the character that did die? And the twins didn't seem to miss not getting their revenge very much. But still a real winner.
Just got back. The podunk town I live in only showed it in 3-D. Went to see it with my daughter and her finacee. We walked in as the movie was starting and the only seats available were down in front. I could only keep the glasses on for a few minutes. Too much motion making me sick. Having said all that, I really liked it. I'll go again when the (future) Wife is feeling better. Hopefully next weekend. NOT in 3-D!
Yeah, I would not have wanted to see it in 3-D.
I would've ante'ed up for 3-D Scarlett Johansen in her BVD's. :D
Went to see it early yesterday afternoon.
The highlight of the experience was the theater. It was the Loews Theater in Spring, TX...it used to be a real sh!thole of a theater, but one thing I liked about the old version was hardly anybody went there. There would be maybe two employees working there at any given time as a result. The seats SUCKED. But if you wanted to see a first run movie without dealing with a crowded theater...you could go there and maybe see eight other people in the whole theater.
AMC just bought it a few months back and did a ton of remodeling. Now, I won't go to any other theater if I can help it. The theaters didn't change in size, but they ripped out all the sh!tty seats and put in nothing but recliners:
I bought the tix online and was greeted with a seat map, as if I were making an airline reservation. So I could reserve our specific seats - second great thing.
So all that said, Avengers 2 was pretty 'meh.'
I really liked the first one. And I was certainly in a great frame of mind because hell, I was reclining in a huge leather recliner and watching a 2.5 hour movie. Still, the movie actually bored me at a point. In the 'safe house' scene, I started yawning and even almost fell asleep. The whole romance thing between Banner and Widow was ham-fisted and uninteresting (though we've been seeing it coming for some time now).
The whole 'oh-no-our-bond-is-being-tested-by-adversity' thing was pretty ::) and cliched. I had a feeling something like that was coming.
But, the action scenes were great, if somewhat dizzying and very very Michael Bay-ish at times (so much motion blur you can't tell WTF is going on at times).
The snappy dialogue was entertaining.
War Machine's presence was awesome.
Hell, even my wife liked the movie. (She said it 'wasn't bad,' which is high praise from her.)
But overall, I thought the first one was excellent. This one in comparison, as some of you have said, isn't as good. But overall it's a pretty good film.
It was interesting how they made certain paths go in different directions at the end. If they plan on doing a new Avengers movie with those folks at the end, I'm not going to be in a hurry to see it.
It's all about the continuity and setting up the next movie, B_C.
Went to see it on the big screen (not 3D - but huge) yesterday with the wife.
It was less enjoyable than the last 5 superhero movies I've seen:
Cap 1 & 2
Avengers 1
Guardians of the Galaxy
Last X-Men movie
However, the Ant-Man preview looked awesome. Fantastic 4 preview was horrible - Jonny Storm saying that he wanted to use his powers to "help people" and not attract hot girls and have fun?????? Really??????
Try as I may, I just can't get worked up over Ant-Man. I was never a fan of his character in the comics, except when he did a cross-over with Iron Man in one issue (he had to shrink down and enter Iron Man's armor and fix something, can't recall what offhand).
I'm sure I'll end up seeing it at some point. I'm just not worked up into a nerd frenzy over it. Eh.

Double ditto. I really like Paul Rudd, but I'm not excited at all about Ant-Man.
I had fun with A2, except for the Michael May camera moments. Everyone freaked out with the Avengers comic when Thor and Iron Man left and it was Cap and Hawkeye and the twins, and it worked out OK one the next 40 years...
I'd be more impressed if Rudd was doing a Wonder Man movie instead of Ant Man. I guess I don't get why they chose this hero, unless there's a bigger picture they hope this will dovetail into.
B_C, the Scott Lang version of Ant Man is (so far as I recall) not important at all. The Pyms are very important to the Avengers, but one is dead and the other is already retired, so.... I dunno. I'm sure I'll like it for what it is, and bonus points if he goes Giant Man at the end.

Well yes obviously that's why I asked WHY DOES THERE HAVE TO BE A NEW AVENGERS FACILITY? Tony was talking about retiring to the sticks with Pepper (not that I really believe that), the New York tower is still fine, he isn't going to use it.
Still, being out in a field somewhere will help with potential civilian casualties. They could have just said something like that -- instead no explanation is given at all. It comes out of plot-nowhere.
If Stark isn't an Avenger anymore, why would he would continue to fund the team and provide it's facilities? It's also apparent that SHIELD has been reconstituted to some extent. It's likely that the Avengers have reverted to a SHIELD initiative. Even if Stark offered the tower as a base, I doubt SHIELD would take him up on it.
Yes, there is a lot of stuff going on that isn't directly addressed in AoU. And it sounds like some of it will be addressed through Agents of SHIELD - http://www.slashfilm.com/agents-of-shield-age-of-ultron-plot-hole/

I'm fine with it not being expounded on in the movie. There are enough clues to figure it out.
Good article. Most of what it discusses I was was more-or-less aware of in the back of my head, but the piece more explicitly lays everything out.
Didn't see this link posted, but this one is interesting too:

The last paragraph pretty much puts it all out there (though I know it's been out there before I think):

Yikes. I don't think that I could do that marathon.
No way in hell I could. Even in the uber-awesome leather recliners, sitting still for 6 hours wouldn't work for me. I wonder how much that marathon cost?
Tickets were $65.
F-that!
I will say that I'm surprised I haven't heard a peep out of anyone claiming some mortal offense or trigger warning for the "catholic rabbits" quip. Personally, this Catholic found it damned funny, but given today's society-of-outrage-at-everything, I'm surprised no one's complained.
Too true Brant. I'd forgotten about that line. I can see an Avengers 2-part where the New Avengers go up against Thanos and company and in part 2 the Old Avengers are called in out of retirement to save the day. With Starke-Snark remarks aplenty.
That line was offensive to Catholics and rabbits!

Well - I'm Catholic and I shoot. But I have a sense of humor and am not a nut job. Catholics have not been killing infidels for 300+ years, unlike some other unnamed religious groups.
I'm near-Catholic and I thought it was pretty hilarious. O0
Per the order watching: I was going to argue that almost all of the Hulk movie takes place either contemporary to or possibly even before Iron Man 1 (since the military is still buying new Stark weapons, and using them on the Hulk; and since it ties directly into the Captain America plot) -- the epilogue obviously doesn't, but the epilogue could take place anytime not long afterward, as in fact one of the first Marvel one-shot films suggests (while basically retconning the epilogue out of continuity, sort of).
But then the infographic's author admits at the bottom that "this one is totally skippable so watch it in whatever order you want" (no doubt before the first movie). ;)
I have noticed that the Shield and Daredevil TV show, and the Avengers movie, all refer back to the movie as having happened, though, so it hasn't been completely retconned out.
On a completely different related topic, was anyone else expecting Ultron to do something with that behemoth corpse in Strucker's castle, which the film kept occasionally reminding us was there? Because Dad and I did.
(Also, I'm very disappointed that Strucker was written out of the story. He's a fairly major Cap villain, and there aren't many of those around in the MCU anymore. I can't recall what Ultron didn't want the Avengers to learn from him either...?)
Ah, okay (re one of the articles), I wasn't thinking about how it makes sense to split off the Avengers into a new base in order to help the next movie happen, i.e. Civil War.
I was thinking about how it makes no (stated) sense in terms of the story so far as it has happened instead of making sense of stories that haven't happened yet. :buck2:
i.e., there's no reason in-story (so far) for Stark not to still be supporting the Avengers, and lending or supplying them his tech, including his tower which so far as the movie goes (assuming he isn't only kidding) he'll have personally less use for soon. The reason is due to future story requirements not anticipated in the stories themselves up to now.
I was surprised that Strucker was taken out so quickly. I was expecting him to have a more prominent and lasting role. That was the biggest letdown in AoU for me.
I thought it made a great deal of sense for Stark to leave the team. Fury's back, SHIELD is back. Tony's never been much of a team player and he's never cared much for SHIELD.
Also he totally screwed up with the creation of Ultron. He pissed off Cap and Thor big time. He basically lost his place on the team. Also Banner's gone and Tony probably respected him more than any other Avenger. Banner's the only one Stark considers his intellectual equal.
And the truth is that Tony really doesn't think he made the wrong call. He still believes he needs something big to protect humanity. He's not going to stick around and have to admit he was wrong. That's just not in his nature. So off he goes on his own, hell bent on saving the world.
One other thing I've been thinking about, Ultron was at least much Banner's fault as Stark's. Banner could have said no to using Strucker's AI research and stopped Tony cold. Tony acknowledged that Banner was the true expert. They had been working on Ultron together and still couldn't make it work without the captured HYDRA research.
Banner let his scientific curiosity get the better of himself. If he had refused to help Stark, Ultron probably wouldn't have happened. The difference between Banner and Stark is that Banner can admit to the mistake.
Stark leaving the team makes sense. Stark leaving Avengers tower in New York makes sense. I've never said otherwise.
What I've been saying is that the Avengers leaving Avengers tower in New York (especially with Stark leaving it) doesn't make sense as presented (or rather as non-presented) in the story.
(I mean, I can imagine a decent collateral damage reason, but that isn't a reason given in the story.)
Possibly this will be fleshed out better in the Blu.
Where, I've incidentally just read on a completely different topic, Thor's sidestory will be spun out better. The black woman disrobing at the pool in the promotional material wasn't just some random arty image that popped into Thor's mind during him being affected by Wanda but which was then rejected equally randomly but which was kept in the promo trailers because it looked striking -- though Whedon tried to explain it that way at least once! According to Whedon elsewhere, Thor was supposed to be possessed by the Norns in that pool, and then to answer questions posed (at his request) by Selkirk about what was 'really' happening (which might also have something to do with the quasi-hinted mystery over why Ultron acted the way he did, presumably thanks to the mind stone and Thanos).
That would explain the dream image of the woman (she's a Norn); and why Thor even thought to go to the pool (unlike the other dreams his seemed to have real mystical meaning, most likely hinting that something was drastically wrong in Asgard thanks to Loki having taken over pretending to be Odin -- Loki was filmed for those dream sequences, too); and why he asked Selkirk to come along (because someone had to ask the questions to the possessed Thor).
I didn't get the impression he was abandoning the Tower. Pepper still runs Stark Industries. AFAIK that's a Stark property. And of course, the stuff about retiring to the sticks was just blowing smoke. Tony would last about two minutes on a country farm.
He would demonstrably be talking to tractors pretty quickly. >:D
"Could you PLEASE try NOT to bring this one to life!"
(But of course we know already he isn't really retiring anywhere; he's going to be in Cap 3 as the main antagonist, sort of.)
That was one of the best lines of AoU.
Meanwhile, on a different yet sort-of related topic (again):
Originally, the Hulk wasn't involved in the Civil War because he was busy taking over and ruling that gladiator world (having been exiled from Earth), and then coming back for WWH.
We've been hearing tons of rumors swirling around that even though Planet Hulk (and WWH) isn't coming, something like it may be coming.
What if they're setting up a sort-of WWH scenario for the coming movies? Ruffalo still has four more movies under contract (which could be expanded), surely one of which is Infinity War Part 2 (if not Part 1, and it seems likely not).
We know:
1.) Banner (and the Hulk in a way) was worrying about where on Earth he could go that he wouldn't hurt anyone. Somewhere near Fiji apparently. That doesn't necessarily have to mean somewhere still on Earth, but it might.
2.) Banner (and the Hulk in a way) wanted to have a sort-of-normal life with a woman he could marry and settle down with, though he thought it couldn't happen.
3.) Originally Whedon had written a scene for the Hulk near the end of Av2 which he was super proud of and which he thought would have led to a lot of fist-pumping and would be the best scene for the Hulk so far, maybe the best scene so far in the MCU. Whatever that was, he excised it, and has given ambiguous reasons about it being too important or something.
4.) There was a weird little scene toward the end where the Hulk defeats Ultron basically off-camera (with Reddington muttering something like "Oh good Lord, really?" before being thrown out of a Quinjet. I put it that way because, again, I think Ultron's performance though highly entertaining is a big weak-spot in the film.) This should have been the "puny god" moment of the film; it seems clearly designed to have been more than it was. If anything it ought to have been more of a payoff to at least Ultron interrupting his moment with Natasha; and probably should have been a payoff to Banner having been a VERY VOCALLY KEY PART of Ultron's creation -- one that Ultron basically ignored all film, focusing on Stark instead.
5.) The Hulk's final scene shows him, not Banner, regretfully flying the Quinjet off; with the Widow trying to talk him down like she has previously done, but not only is it not working, he sadly turns off her communication. That's a huge signal that, despite physical appearances, either Banner has somehow gained control over the Hulk (mostly -- and moreso than at the end of Av1), or the Hulk himself has merged personalities with Banner. That "unified Hulk" was once the most dangerous (and pretty entertaining) version of the Hulk, as written by Peter David, and he returned royally pissed off in a state of ultimate anger during WWH after Planet Hulk.
6.) Perhaps unimportantly, the CGI designers originally intended for the Hulk to turn grey during the battle with Stark, and did in fact do so (in preliminary stages or renders). That couldn't have been just some random whim, they had to be directed to do that (and there were rumors about this happening). The Grey Hulk is the missing third part of Banner's psyche, crucial to him becoming unified, and would have made a much differently dangerous (though physically somewhat weaker) foe during the fight -- it isn't likely given the major continuity respect to the properties (even in unexpectedly subtle things like Ultron's creation being connected originally to Jarvis) that Whedon (and the other writers? -- were there any?) would have simply changed his tone grey and left his personality still 'green'. (Turning him red would have served better as a more trivially colorful indication, especially with Wanda messing with his mind to unlock more anger.)
However, introducing the Grey Hulk for that one sequence would have been hugely difficult plot-wise -- though again there seems to be a missing plot element from the theatrical cut where we don't see what/how Wanda sets Banner off on a rampage. It makes sense to keep the fight simple and understandably within range of what we've seen of the Hulk's behavior so far in the movie series.
So here's a theory. Banner absconds to a remote island somewhere, having somehow gotten more control (maybe even in a merged personality), but still worried he might hurt other people and/or just wanting to be left alone. Maybe in the Blu there's even a much enlarged final confrontation between the unifying Hulk and Ultron (whom after all Banner helped co-create). He finds a wife, like in Planet Hulk (though obviously without the gladiator or emperor issues), who helps him unify even farther. Possibly there are nods to the wife of Banner in the two-part season opening of Season Two of the 70s Hulk TV show (which won an Emmy). Maybe even the return of Betty from the first movie. (Whedon has admitted that "Veronica" is an explicit nod to Betty Banner via an Archie pun.) Maybe even the Black Widow? -- there were hints he was hoping she'd join him wherever he went, and they sure talked about running off like that. Maybe Jarella, or someone reasonably like her? (Hulk's wife the first time he became unified, in a microverse. Or maybe even really her, in the microverse, from "The Beast Who Shouted Love At the Heart of the Atom"?? Thanks to Pym particles???)
Then whoever she is, she's killed, as a side effect to something else going on but which has a blamable cause (not just a hurricane as on the TV show). Presumably the something else would be the Infinity War Part 1, and Thanos is to blame rather than (mistakenly) Stark, Dr. Strange, etc.
Thus the Hulk returns in IW2, ready to fight Thanos as the unified Hulk -- somewhat as in the original Infinity War series, but with the difference that now he's not only unified in personality but has achieved the perfect anger from World War Hulk which, in that series, allowed him to crush all opponents even ones which could have beaten him previously (even a Superman-expy, except even stronger than pre-Crisis Superman, who had been added to the Marvel Universe stable meanwhile as though he had been around the whole time).
He still might not be able to beat Thanos by himself, but he'd make a much better impact in the dialed-down version of the Infinity Gems story (which are more like Celestial weapons here not omnipotent reality shaping tools) than he did in the 'real' comics during that story.
Thanos + five Celestial weapons (or maybe his minions/army then briefly fighting him) vs an intelligent tactically crafty Hulk whose righteous anger is so strong that HIS VERY FOOTSTEPS CAUSE EARTHQUAKES ON THE EAST COAST! :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
A very much toned down version of that (thanks to the Widow being attacked) could have even been what Whedon says he dropped (he certainly dropped something super-important to the Hulk storyline) from the fight against Ultron near the end of Av2, rather than do it sloppily now and dilute its impact later (which is basically his explanation for doing whatever he did).
While that previous speculation / evaluation is original (I haven't seen anyone else try that theory out yet), I did notice in paging around various post-movie articles that Whedon says the original cut of the film was 38 MINUTES LONGER!
So when he says the Blu will be an extended cut, that's probably what he means: a version of the originally intended 179 minute cut (perhaps still 179 or perhaps still trimmed a bit).
Whatever it and the "alternate ending" is, we can be sure of two things: (1) it will have more dream sequences and particularly more Thor plot; (2) it cannot possibly be only more dream sequences and Thor plot.

Here ya go folks. A primer on the Infinity Stones and the MCU.
http://www.theverge.com/2015/5/7/8560555/marvel-infinity-stones-avengers-infinity-war-movie
Cool. Thanks for the post Mirth.
Pursuant to my observation above that the MCU does occasionally confirm, off in the corners, that the Incredible Hulk movie events happened (e.g. the Hulk fighting in Harlem as a newspaper article on the wall of a frequently visited locale in the Daredevil TV series), comes the announcement yesterday that William Hurt will be reprising his role of General Thunderbolt Ross, in the upcoming Cap 3 movie.
The currently updated official plot synopsis (http://comicsalliance.com/captain-america-civil-war-ant-man-war-machine-general-ross/?trackback=tsmclip) (courtesy of ComicsAlliance) sounds a lot like this is really Avengers 3!
Quote'Captain America: Civil War' picks up where 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.
Currently, the only member of the new Avengers not confirmed to appear is War Machine (and Nick Fury, if he counts).
I saw something very briefly on the morning news today...it was part of their little distracting ticker at the bottom...said something about Ant-Man being in the upcoming Captain America movie. :buck2:
Just watched Thor 2 again and it's not at all clear what happened to the Ether at the end of the film. But I'll volunteer to search Natalie Portman just to be sure.
When I was a teen, I followed the Thanos Quest, The Infinity Gauntlet, and the Infinity War series, then I just stopped. When Infinity Crusade came around, I realized this was getting ridiculous (kinda going the way Secret Wars I & II went). I had just about stopped with Marvel titles when Professor X's kid went nuts and changed history by accidentally killing him instead of Magneto, and the Age of Apocalypse & then Onslaught came around (this part was sort of cool, seeing a one handed Wolverine ride the back of a Sentinel across the Atlantic was a hoot), but then even that reality came undone, and things sort of came back to normal again. What a gyp!
This was the mid to late 90s, when comics and their value was super over inflated, and some of the lead artists had some ridiculous cred going on (anyone remember how hyped Liefield used to be?).
Good thing Dark Horse was around with their alternative entertainment (Aliens, Predator, Robocop titles were pretty interesting).

Used to?
Comics by DC and Marvel (most especially DC) keep going up in price despite all the new advances making production cost cheaper, and not to mention the digital format that
definitely doesn't warrant the same price or more as a physical copy.

The Jeffersons made me laugh out loud.

They give it to the Collector in a scene during the credits. Sif and one other of Thor's pals deliver it to him and when they leave he says something like "One down, 5 to go".
^I prefer the one where they introduce everyone's favorite Marvel character, Howard the Duck, into the movie Marvelverse :))
Howard the Duck <smh>
Lea Thompson in skimpy rocker clothes - what's not to like?!
The rest of that movie.
I thought it was another Infinity Stone they gave the Collector instead of the Ether. And it ended up with Nova Prime at the end of Guardians. A purple stone maybe? I didn't see the Ether actually go anywhere after the bad guy was killed. A lot of stones to keep up with.
Nova Corps does get the Orb (the Power Stone) at the end of Guardians. The Collector had the Aether (the Reality Stone) but his place gets trashed during Guardians, so it's a question as to what happens to it.
The Power Stone was the one I couldn't think of. The Sharon Stone would be on my list. ;D

Of course, if he does manage to get that contract extension he's working on, that could change (and lots of people will be very happy). 8)

It's an old argument, that I have posted many times. If it was good enough the way it was written, why in God's name does it have to be changed?!?!?!!!!!!!!! I am super glad that LotR has been made. NONE of the changes was, "necessary." I am super glad they've done the Marvel movies. NONE of the changes was, "necessary." It won't stop. Hollywood thinks it knows better. And if
I didn't know better, I'd say that Hollywood was a liberal, and we all KNOW that they know better. Just ask one. They'll tell you how you should think.
Totally agree with you about the libs, not sure I agree with not changing the stories. I don't want to see a film I already know how it ends. I want to be surprised by who Star Lord's real father is. In Wheddon's case, that's what he did so great with Buffy and Firefly. You could never see what was coming next especially the ending. Now Libs, you can always see them coming. Just look for a huge cloud of self-righteous hypocrisy and they're in there. ^-^
1.) I've been entirely pleased with SLJ's Nick Fury from the epilogue of IM1 onward; but I've never been a positive fan of the canon comics character. (Didn't dislike him, just wasn't a fan. And I know barely nothing of the Ultimates Nick Fury which is how we got SLJ in the role anyway.)
2.) Oh ye of little memories. Marvel had a few good movies before IM1, including at least two Sam Rami Spiderman films. I might even add the first (modern) Hulk movie, too, although it wasn't at all a good superhero movie (but then the Hulk is a Universal Monster, really, not a superhero.)
3.) It is entirely possible that Jackson is playing with the fans (on orders from the producers) to keep his appearance a secret -- we have no reason to believe he'd survive Av3.1, and his (real) death rather would be dramatically useful. Anthony Mackie denied being in Av2 practically up until release. Nick Fury originally was in Cap3, and his connection with Shield and re-establishment at the end of Av2, positions him relevantly in a plot about registering supers (or whatever they're calling them in the MCU this/next year.)

I was thinking of the MCU films. The Spiderman and X-Men films seem outside of Marvel, now that the MCU has been developed and fleshed out. The first two Raimi Spiderman films were excellent. Spiderman 2 holds up particularly well, imho.
I've always been somewhat ambivalent about the X-men movies. Most of them have been entertaining enough, but I've always had a sense they could have been 'more'.
The first Hulk movie was alright. The CGI doesn't hold up well though.
yes please...
http://www.denofgeek.us/movies/captain-america/246966/mark-ruffalo-on-hulk-in-captain-america-civil-war
I strenuously doubt the Hulk per se will be in it. More likely Ruffalo would have a brief cameo as Banner.
Which makes sense because, in the MCU, the Hulk would be a Big Damn Reason for super-registration (and control), even though he took himself off the board at the end of Av2; but he really needs to be off the board in order not to tilt the balance too heavily either in favor of registration (by his existence and possible behaviors during the conflict, or even Banner's agreement in principle that people like him need to be shut down although that would be very out-of-character) or against it (by fighting on behalf of anti-registration).
It may not be coincidence that the Planet Hulk storyline was running in comics canon during Civil War: the Hulk was entirely off the board. Which is also why people kept speculating that Av2 would segue into something-like-Planet Hulk for a while (maybe providing a bridge to the Guardians).
Hard to imagine bringing Ruffalo in and not showing a scene or two with the Hulk. I'm still expecting him to leave Earth, whether by his own choice or being forced off, in order to set up a Planet Hulk/Guardians tie-in. Since that didn't happen in AoU, it may well happen during Cap 3.
Even if it's Ruffalo only as Banner in Cap 3, I'd welcome it. Ruffalo's Banner is one of the most interesting MCU characters, imho.
If capturing Banner and deporting him off planet (using what technology? Thor's?) was a major plot point in Cap3, I don't think Ruffalo and RDJ would be talking as though having him would be a good idea that they'd like to see happen.

Why not? It's part of an overall story. Why would they personally care? It's not like it's the end of the character or of a role in the future films. It could even lead to a new stand-alone Hulk film.
And Hulk going off-world doesn't necessarily require his capture. Banner could go willingly, a self-imposed exile to protect the planet. Or maybe he identifies some alien tech that could help him control the Hulk. He wasn't captured and forced off-world in the Planet Hulk story line, he was tricked into it.
What I was saying was that it can't be that important to the plot or they wouldn't be talking as though Ruffalo might possibly be on set now maybe. It would already be in the plot.
Consequently, I infer they're talking about Ruffalo making a cameo as Banner (or maybe filming some new minor mo-cap footage as the Hulk to play in the background). But if they're making huge changes toward Planet Hulk this late in pre-production (or start of production), I'm not sure that bodes well.

Yeah, I saw that a while back; makes sense, even in a meta-conceptual way: the Hulk is pretty clearly a modern Universal Monster! -- which Universal played up hard in the Bixby/Ferrigno TV show, and in the Hulk movies.
...GUYS I JUST HAD THE MOST IDEA!11! UNIVERSAL'S ATTEMPT AT AN AVENGER-LIKE MONSTER CINEMATIC UNIVERSE SHOULD INCLUDE THE HULK!
Meanwhile, insider buzz says Marvel is looking for Shakespearean director Kenneth Branagh back as director of Thor 3.
Somewhat relatedly, I didn't realize he directed the recent live-action Disney Cinderella remake, though I've heard it's far more faithful an adaptation than the kind-of-disastrous Maleficent / Sleeping Beauty movie. (My nieces liked it well enough anyway. O0 )
I loved the job he did on Thor 1. Thor 2 was also very well done without Branagh.
Agreed, both movies are rather underrated. And the plot of 3 seems more along the epic Shakespearean line that they hired him for the first movie on anyway.

I'd buy a ticket to see that. But no 3D in case she delivers.
Ah, a cross between the Avengers and Deliverance.
It's really stupid that Marvel had to negotiate with Sony to use the Spider-Man character. Shows you how silly licensing gets and how it's about the dollar and not the fan base. :-\
They have to make enough dollars to afford to please the fan base, so I'm willing to cut them some slack on that.
A number of crappy Marvel movies helped finance some good non-MarvStudio movies, and helped finance the start of the MarvStudio movies.
Interestingly, Marvel made very little money from those licensing deals with FOX and Sony.

Cross-posted about Ant-Man
QuoteActually, Paul Rudd was pretty entertaining and a decent fit. I was concerned how they were goin to handle Janet being dead, but they actually did a pretty good job of working the whole storyline together. I don't want to spoil anything beyond that, but let's just say they left open a handful of very interesting plot possibilities for down the line.
Honestly one of the more underwhelming aspects of this one were the fight scenes. The jump between small and large that they make several times each during the fights really don't translate that well to the big screen, and the scenes start to fall apart a little bit. Fortunately, the best parts of this movie are not the fight scenes, although there are a few good funny moments in them

Heh. The movie didn't exactly capture the sweep of the comic book series :P
Would have been funnier had the sound clips been Red Reddington from The Blacklist.
Rewatched Av2 last night -- got the Blu for my birthday.
Got the same weird feeling I did in the theater, that I ought to love the movie, but something just seems continually out of synch or halting about it.
I finally decided part of my problem is that the MCU have routinely had trouble getting good musical scores for their films -- none have beaten Iron Man 1, and the only others to distantly approach that one have been the first Cap movie and Av1, not-coincidentally composed by the same guy.
This film goes back to having not only such a generic sounding musical score that it might as well have been a temp track from a radio commercial sound bed, but also kept reminding the audience that the Avengers have a pretty decent musical theme -- but ONLY BRIEFLY REMINDING! It would play a few bars every 45 minutes or so, sometimes in a minor key, usually in the background so that by the time it's noticed the music is back to being blah. This weird schizophrenia even continued in the final credit sequence, with an attempt to make a triumphant new theme out of the nothing that came before, occasionally peppered with bars from "the Avengers theme". (Once Thanos did his mid-credit scene, and the credits shifted to the normal credit roll, a more robust version of the Avengers theme finally cued in, but by then I didn't care anymore.)
I'm sure this has been contributing to my impression that the movie keeps threatening to be great. :buck2: I don't know what legal-rights issue reared its head, but it hobbled the film for me.
1. Happy Belated Birthday
2. Av2 left me feeling flat.
3. That being said, no Marvel movie has connected with me in the way that IM1, and Av1 did. But X-Men Days of Future Past came pretty dammed close; best Quicksilver EVER!
Watched Ant-Man last night with Dad, and a Mom who could not have possibly cared less. Dad enjoyed it well enough.
I liked it a lot, even though the script felt like it was trying too hard to crib from Iron Man (1). I could see some of the script-stapling, too, such as the occasional explanation for the bad guy's evilness being that the Pym Particles were messing with his brain, even though he had no more obvious exposure to them than anyone else in the movie (such as his own technicians). Some items were made randomly larger for no reason toward the end of the movie (such as a toy train, and an ant that ends up a doggy pet), which I felt sure was setting up for a Giant-Man finale although I couldn't figure out why that would be appropriate. And the main villain's chief tech problem made no sense: he can't shrink living creatures without destroying them (and say hi/bye to one scene of Yellowjacket's offensive shrink gun which never reappears, though a nice canon touch), but has a suit and is entirely (and correctly) sure that Pym used to go out as a secret military operative in such a suit. Why he wouldn't have tried to shrink a test animal in something like that suit sooner, is beyond my understanding.
Appreciated the various nods and tie-ins to other MCU properties, including the original Howard Stark actor (from IM2) returning as an older Stark for the prologue along with Haley Atwell grousing around in terrible middle-old-aged woman makeup as Peggy Carter. On the other hand, CGI (???) Gecko-era Michael Douglas looked amazing in that scene (and part of me hopes that since they shadow-teased hard that Janet can be recovered, they'll cast his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones next time... though she sure doesn't look Wasp-ish and never has.) I was surprised that the movie teased Ant-Man as being the first of Cap's allies in the upcoming Civil War movie, as I hadn't heard of him even being in it. I was perversely annoyed by the Avengers theme song being used far more appropriately in an Ant-Man movie than even once in the whole last Avengers movie!
The action was classic Ant-Man (including some Wasp action in a flashback scene), as I fully expected by now from Marvel Studios. The humor and language was harder-edged than I expected from the property, although maybe I should have expected it with this being a Scott Lang Ant-Man origin story.
Overall I'd say this movie deserved to make more money than it did, despite it being inherently a much harder sell than even GotGalaxy. I'm not the world's biggest fan of the AntFamily (for want of a better term) side of Marvel canon, and like most Marvel fans I would have much preferred focusing on the Wasp. "It's about damn time," indeed. At least the movie constantly agrees with this sentiment and so breaks over backward to try to justify why she isn't the one in the suit, acknowledging that although the justification makes sense from Henry's perspective (which I'd say they succeed in establishing, after working hard against odds to do so), really Hope should be the one inheriting the role.
Too bad the next movie won't be named "The Wasp and Ant-Man". Not too late to fix that, though!

I finally got around to watching, "Antman" the other day on DVR and it wasn't half bad. Lots of action, humor and good effects and M. Douglas did a good job of not taking-over the film. I'd go a 7 outta 10.
I saw it in the movies. I liked it. But I like Paul Rudd. Don't care for Douglas. And not a big fan of Evangeline Lily, but, I think she would make a really good Wasp. So, all in all, it worked for me. Glad you liked it, too.
Ant-Man was fun. Solid 8. Paul Rudd was exactly what was needed.
The difference between the MCU and DCU is that Marvel seems willing to poke some fun at itself. DC is far too serious about everything.

I think it's meant to signal "we're going old-school, don't worry, just like the fans wanted".
Which considering that he's wearing a Stark power-suit that has Stark web-shooters and Stark adjustable eye holes, is maaaaayyyybeee just a bit disingenuous. (Although the eye-hole adjustment is admittedly pretty clever as a translation from page to screen.)
I'm disappointed they're going with Vulture over Kraven the Hunter.
Multiple villains, Vulture is one. Haven't heard of the others yet.
First review I've seen come in: super-positive, not too surprisingly.
http://comicsalliance.com/captain-america-civil-war-review/
Hollywood Reporter and TheWrap are reporting that Natalie Portman (that's a lot of "ports" in a storm of a first sentence half!) won't be returning as Dr. Foster in Thor 3. Which makes sense if most or all of it is set on Asgard and other areas of the Nine Realms; but I recall her being pretty ambivalent (at best) about returning for the role, so Jane may be written out of the story altogether going forward.
I'm all in for Civil War. Perfect timing for a summer kick-ass Super Hero movie. I thought--- too many heroes too, but maybe they can really pull it off. On the other hand, I hope they don't screw-up the next Thor as I thought these were the best Marvel movies yet.

I like Natalie Portman as an actress, but I didn't particularly care for the Jane Foster character in the Thor movies.
Jane was a pretty thankless character; I thought the scripts and Natalie worked hard, but in the end it's just difficult to believe she and Thor can fit into each other's life. In the comics this was easier due to him having an actual secret identity, plus more restrictions on being deported from Asgard -- once those lifted, she dropped out by natural proportion.

So.. did they ever decide on whether to do an Iron Fist series on Netflix, as the rumor went?
Or maybe they're just dropping him heavily into Defenders..?
Iron Fist was still on the slate to be done last time I saw -- they've even recently cast the cast, including for one of the other prime Marvel martial artists, Shang Chi Master of Kung Fu.
QuoteThis will be the first time Jessica Jones joins the "street level heroes" squad.
This project is the first time I've ever heard the Defenders described as "the street level heroes squad". :buck2: ::) :crazy2: Dr. Strange may live in Soho, but he isn't a street level hero (although he knows them), much less the Hulk, much less Namor -- and that was
before the Silver Surfer joined.
Some of their (always temporary and rotating) members have been street level (including Hellcat, whose civilian character was introduced in JJ's series not incidentally). But they constantly have someone like Dr. Strange or the Valkyrie (a norse goddess on rough par with Thor) in the ranks, usually calling the group together.
Sounds like most of the regulars, for the Netflix series, will be so-called "street level". I guess Marvel is holding on to the biggest names for their movies.
I'm fine with Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist getting much Netflix screen time in it. Maybe a few cameos from others?
Don't really care if Jess-EEEEE-cuhhh(!) shows up. I watched that whole series but it seemed like one very long drawn-out rape vengeance run-up that should've ended much earlier. And way too many "Jess-EEEEE-cuh!"s - I started hearing that in my head, like a bad song stuck in there.

No doubt. And I'm fine with DD, Power Man, and Iron Fist, and even Jewel (or whatever her name was) getting time in it. I don't even mind the street level characters being the MCU "Defenders", with that characteristic being what distinguishes them from the Avengers. I only mind the marketing implication that the Defenders are traditionally street level compared to the Avengers.

Holy crap. They're really blowing up the Marvelverse.
I don't care too much for Elektra, don't know anything about Bullseye (though I've heard of him), read a bit of Cloak & Dagger in the day (intriguing but too weird for my kid mind at the time), have very minimal knowledge of the Defenders, but do like the She-Hulk character. Regardless I'm good with them visiting/touching on all of these...sounds like it'll be a lot of fun for Netflix Marvel fans.
The Defenders as conceptualized by the MCU is not what they were in the comics. They're lining them up to be sort of the 'street heroes' of underbelly of the city.
Elektra / Bullseye were all part of the Daredevil mythos, and were well-done in the hands of Frank Miller, but otherwise were never that interesting to me.
Hell's Kitchen is going to get crowded.
But damn, Luke Cage. I wonder if he could stand toe-to-toe with some of the Avengers' heavyweights. Maybe not the Hulk, but maybe the others? I don't know much about him from the comics.
That post was an April Fool's joke from this April.
However, Cloak and Dagger was eventually confirmed to be on the way. That makes sense; they should transfer that pretty well. (Some of the others, too.)
B_C, Bullseye is Daredevil's main fighting challenge (since the Frank Miller story days at least), and although he wasn't around to deal the critical Elektra plot development in Season Two he was in the Affleck!Devil film from several years ago before the MCU got going. Colin Farrell played him I think? Not a bad job, though he didn't look the part much (and lampshaded about wanting his own costume).
He's an Irish hit man with crazy-good aiming skills, rather like DC Comics' Batman villain Deadshot. He usually crosses the line back and forth between funny and terrifying (or that's the intention), and can be a good villain to watch operate and root against (or for occasionally). In recent years, he has been occasionally hanging with Deadpool (since they play humor off one another well in psychotic killer ways) as an old pal/rival who absolutely hates that Deadpool has gone soft into pretending (as Shot sees it) to be some kind of hero.
I'm looking forward to their Iron Fist series.
Defenders could be great, if the writers don't make it too scattered.
The Wasp is coming

QuoteWe still have 2018's "Avengers: Infinity War" between now and 2019's "Avengers 4," but details are already coming out about the fourth film in the Avengers series.
Actress Evangeline Lilly, who portrayed Hope van Dyne in 2015's "Ant-Man," recently opened up to Blastr about her upcoming involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She laid out the plans for her soon-to-be-superhero character, starting with the "Ant-Man" sequel, "Ant-Man and the Wasp." With the film slated to debut after "Avengers: Infinity War," she won't appear in the third film in the Avengers series. However, we can expect to see her become the Wasp in time for "Avengers 4."
Lilly explained that "Ant-Man and the Wasp" will be used to develop her character before she teams up with the Avengers.
"I'm excited because it's essentially going to be the origin of the Wasp," Lilly told Blastr of the upcoming sequel. "Of course, we're going to see the Wasp for the first time take on the mantle and put on the suit and fly about and do her thing."
She explained that appearing in the fourth Avengers film instead of the third will be better for her character. "The Wasp won't be in the first part," Lilly said, "she'll be in the second part because they really want to preserve that reveal for 'Ant-Man and the Wasp' so that they can give it its due time."
The news will may be a little disappointing for fans hoping to see her as the Wasp sooner rather than later, but never fear, because -- as always -- there will be more than enough heroes to keep "Avengers: Infinity War" exciting.
"Avengers: Infinity War" is scheduled to hit theaters on May 4, 2018, followed by "Ant-Man and the Wasp" on July 6, 2018, and then "Avengers 4" will follow in 2019.
She should've been in The Avengers all the time. It was her home book for 40+ years and she was the most constant member of the team.

Amen! Enjoyed her tenure as Chairperson back in the 80's.
But how about some diversity? Does the Wasp have to be a W.A.S.P.? :2funny:
Janet Van Dyne probably has to be White Actually-more-anglo-saxony-than-anglo-Saxons nominally-Protestant, if her name and original character role in the story mean anything narratively: adventurous society girl of old Dutch New York money, funds radical scientific work by a cute genius she's smitten with.
Henry Pym, despite his... I think also Dutch?... name, could be something other than W.A.S.P.-y, although if he had been cast as black you'd have to prepare for never-ending pymp-slapping memes. (Pym is notorious for being a temporarily abusive husband in one continuity, albeit under a lot of personal stress at the time. It was a way for writers to generate attention. ::) :P )
Scott Lang could have been literally anyone (and if the last name didn't work, really they could have changed it with a bit of angulation. Tony Stark's Vietnamese good Samaritan doctor was changed to Afghani/Pakisomething while coyly keeping part of the the vaguely exotic sounding Vietnamese name; and the original Vietnamese doctor was changed from being Samaritan for that matter! :coolsmiley: And that worked out okay.)
Hope Van Dyne could have easily been mixed-anyone: WASPy Janet plus whichever creative radical from the 60s or 70s she broke status convention to support and marry.

The way I took Ant-Man, Hope was Hank & Janet's daughter.
I know; my point was that Hank Pym could have some non-'white' guy in the 1980s who was supported by Janet (inheriting the 60s/70s right movement, and/or as a fashion statement to annoy her parents ;) ), and then Hope would have been of mixed heritage being Hank and Janet's daughter. That wouldn't break anything in Hank's character, wouldn't break anything in Janet's character (and would actually fit parts of it with a more modern angle), and so would help diversify while honoring why the characters have had legacy staying power. Similarly, Scott Lang could have been, well, any of the other guys in his little posse. ;) His story would have played just the same.
I chuckled
